- Some murders are so horrific they live long in the memory. In 1995, Knoxville Tennessee, such a killing occurred. Victim and perpetrators were just teenagers, and the sadistic brutality of the crime caused a media sensation. It would only be after trial that the truth of the ringleader’s dysfunctional past would be revealed, dividing opinion across a nation. Should she pay the ultimate price in the electric chair, or should the courts show her clemency? This is what happens when nature and nurture create a cold-blooded killer. I have BPD and CPTSD from accumulative childhood sexual, physical and mental abuse and I am not a murderer. In fact, i am an empath and run an online support group for people who have MH problems xx
I have BPD and C-PTSD also. I've fantasised about killing people many times. However my parents never abandoned me and we only ever lived in 2 houses in my childhood. I doubt very much that my mother drank during her pregnancy being a midwife herself. My mother is most unselfish. They never killed any animals in front of me. My grandmothers and extended family never abused me. I was raised in a church and two schools where adults were kind to me.
I don’t know if I’m bipolar (forgot the acronym I believe you are talking about bipolar disorder) but I have ptsd as well

@@XSlimSxadyX BPD usually refers to borderline personality disorder, but it is occasionally used for bipolar. Regardless, both can cause a lot of the same issues and may present pretty similarly.
I, myself, am bipolar, adhd, and adhd. I am highly empathic. While I may occasionally have thoughts of great rage, anger, hostility and violence, i would never dare hurt someone. I do appreciate that Pike had a horrific childhood, and was impaired by her mothers abuse of substances while in utero, but she still had so many choices she could have made. There were so many points where she was controlled enough that she COULD have stopped her brutal attack and left her victim alive. She even recognized that her victim talking made it harder for her to inflict violence! It’s strange, I don’t think someone like Eric Smith was punished appropriately and would’ve been better serving time in a secure forensic psychiatric prison. But with Pike…. I just don’t see a chance of rehabilitation. I’m not sure what the difference is, but the cases do feel greatly different.
Kinda off topic, but can we please start getting the likes up for Emma? Less than 6% of people who watched this, clicked the like button.. I think most, if not ALL of us can agree that she deserves so many more subs then what she has right now. She's the ONLY creator that I've ever watched that memorizes these cases so well that she can film a whole video without it being edited. These are about 98% of the time, 1.5 hour videos. I know I couldn't memorize this much information, keeping the timeline straight and not stopping to read the next sequence of events.
I'm constantly amazed and in awe of her capability to memorize these cases twice a week.. 💜💜💜

This reminds me of the Shanda Sharer case which was just as horrific. It's deeply saddening when I hear of all these innocent victims lives lost to complete heartlessness, mercilessness, and insanity💔 Colleen Slemmer will never be forgotten, always in our hearts.
I was thinking same thing! She may have been treated dreadfully throughout her life but that does not give her the right to kill an innocent girl, who had a whole life ahead of her. I don't believe in the death penalty, as it does not solve anything! Her sentence should be changed to life, with no possibility of prole! R.I.P Colleen, may you find peace in Heaven!

When you do your "deep dives", it brings a whole new dimension to the stories. I love true crime and when I am chatting on Facebook or texting my friends and talk about serial killers they think they know it all as well. I remember this happening because it was just after my own 18th birthday. I'm not huge supporter of the death penalty, but this case I definitely think warrents it if any ever did.
I disagree that this warrants the death penalty. The crime was horrific and stomach churning. If someone is damaged in utero and consistently failed to be protected by societal institutions afterwards then there is societal culpability. It's all an entire mess and nothing is learned to prevent this for others. What a damned mess.

Parents need to take responsibility and be punished where appropriate.
And take back all government benefits they receive especially here in the UK where despite all the moaning it is more than many many countries it’s theft from children when spent on drugs alcohol makeup nails boyfriends and takeaways. I have witnessed it all too often
They took-out so much fury & rage on poor Colleen. She had done absolutely NOTHING to ‘inspire’ that treatment at all. Pike had created a reason to hate Colleen & felt the emotions leading up to the attack. The other 2 had no motive at all!!! 🤬 Doesn’t that make them WORSE not less guilty???
Horrible, horrible crime. I don’t question that at any kind of level. This is what I am feeling and thinking: Pike was SICK!! Extremely sick. She was born sick, her frontal lobe was damaged, no medical attention was sought at any time. She was instead abused, abused, abused...to the point of wanting to take her own life. She gets diagnosed with a series of mental illnesses. Does she get PROPER treatment?? No. She gets shipped to a terrible aaaand terribly dangerous place which she doesn’t get any help but instead, it furthers her into more erratic behavior....guns, violence, satanism, abusing boyfriend (aaaaagain) so she doesn’t, I don’t think, any sense of self, she only wants to please in any way and manner because she’s terrified of abandonment. I do NOT condone the unimaginable act she committed but I am a steadfast believer that the death penalty is barbaric. The beautiful girl she killed is not coming back because the state kills Pike, that is a sad reality. Pike has no sense of boundaries, no notion of consequences.
I would commute the death penalty to life in prison in solitary confinement until the day she dies. I believe the death penalty should definitely be applied when and where children are envolved. I lost my sympathy for her immediately after I heard all what she did to that poor girl. Her life growing up had me in tears my heart was breaking for her. But she had a choice. She chose to do a brutally murder an innocent girl. She should fry!!! She has not said once that she was sorry for what she did to that beautiful girl. My heart hurts for what she put that baby girl through. The other girl that got off white Parole Are You Kidding Me!!! She was involved in this poor girls death. She should be prison for live as well. I never believed in giving people who commit crimes a get out of jail free card. Do the crime do the time.
Getting abused as a child changes the Brain of the way of how they think it's acually changes how the brain thinks there's scans that prove that
I mean I feel sorry for her but she is locked up where she needs to be. But when you look at what happened to her, and the photo's of her as a toddler I fell sorry for her. Sexual abuse and mental health is a lot for a child mind.

Agree! We make choices. I was abused as a child. I wasn’t sexually abused I was mentally and physically. I CHOSE to never inflict that on my children ever. I never so much as raise my voice and I’ve never raised my hand. I’d rather cut it off. I broke the chain. We have a choice to learn from our past and re creat a better future. She knew how awful it was and yet she chose to do the same. I’m sorry but I agree with you.
Totally agree... look at shanda sharer case. Melinda loveless suffered horrific childhood abuse, she brutally murdered an innocent child....the difference between Melinda and christa is that Melinda has shown remorse and accepted responsibility for what she did. Christa still hasnt.
I was 3 years old when my father did some bad things to me and my 8 week old sister. This story ripped my heart straight into pieces

Oh my word, I'm only 16 1/2 minutes into this story and I feel sick. My daughter has nearly the exact same story as Pike; constantly abandoned by her birth mom for the next guy in her life; obvious sexualized behavior (but in preschool); the mom's even nearly share the same name! She came to us via foster care a very broken and confused child, but thankfully doesn't consciously remember any of the abuse she suffered. It's been nearly 6 years since she came to live with us, 2 years officially ours, and I am thankful every day we were able to give her a stable, loving home. I've heard this story (of Pike's) before and am very aware of what her birth mom could have done to this beautiful child.
Thank god you took her in and gave her a stable home but and please do mot take this as any offense , be warned that her past trauma may rear its head in the future seek help for her if u see any changes in her behaviour at all x
Her mom should have given her up for adoption and this crime most likely wouldn't have happened
she doesn’t consciously remember but her subconscious im afraid does and it can be a root cause for any mental illness in the future or rven just her everyday behaviours

Thank you for loving that little girl when she needed it the most. When my own children leave home, I will also Foster children. Something myself and my husband have always wanted to do.

I am an opponent of the death penalty but I feel all of the participants should have been given the same sentence Pike got. They all participated in hurting Colleen.

I agree. I live in a country that doesn’t have the death penalty so the concept is not something that sits well with me. However, given their age I don’t think the death penalty should be an appropriate punishment. They should have all been given the same punishment. They all took part.

Wow there are so many parallels here to Malinda Loveless in Shanda Sharer’s horrific murder. From the upbringing, to the reason behind the murder and the murder itself. Both such heinous and senseless crimes 💔
Took care of her as a nurse. I can tell you that what she did was on PURPOSE. She was intimidating and methodical.
I feel sorry for Pike's upbringinging. Many people do also and do not hurt others. So I really struggle to understand why she could allow herself to inflict such horror to another young girl. Maybe it was a sort of jealousy and a relief of her own pain whilst she was in action of the attack. After the murder she still has no understanding it seems of what she has done, so maybe her head injury has affected her. Crikey, its hard to work out why. So many different types of killers and you could go mad trying to work out why.
brain injury from birth that kept her from understanding consequence or wrong and right on top of her horrific life just reinforcing there is no wrong or right made her unable to understand. That’s what I think. I think she went about it as if it was any other action because she had magical thinking, PTSD and everything else wrong
I agree. I had a horrific childhood that included (but was not limited to) emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, then experienced it all over again in my first marriage. I suffer from a plethora of medical and mental health issues, including severe MDD, PTSD and anxiety. No possible way I could even CONCEIVE of hurting a child or any innocent person!
I’d still love for you to do the Moors Murders. In July this year it’s 60 years since their first murder. I’m interested in the folie a deux theory about them.

I feel dreadfully sorry for Pike’s upbringing as she should have been protected loved and taken care of but the crime she committed was so heinous and cruel and she seems to have no remorse what so ever. Colleen had done nothing wrong and deserved to have a long and happy life. That Peterson got off with probation is unbelievable as she helped kill Colleen as well as Ship - they should all have been given life with no parole at the very least. Thanks for another in-depth case Emma. RIP Colleen. 😢
Strange, how all of the murderers on death row state that they don't deserve to die. It's sickening that they try to turn themselves into the victim.
I agree. They show no mercy to the victims but then expect leniency. I hate that these murderers can turn on their partners and get a lesser sentence.
Many times they HAVE been victims. That doesn’t allow them to victimize others, though.
Many murderers on death row have since been found to be innocent...I'd say that makes them victims.

My god. I listen to a lot of true crime and usually have a hard time really wrapping my brain around the injuries people endure - this one was extremely vivid and horrific. It made me queasy.
I knew her 4th husband and he didn't like kids. I went to elementary school from 1983 to 1985 with Christa she was a good kid yet she did have some problems and wasn't getting the help she needed like everyone says her mother didn't want or care about her.

I have watched everything you have done on TV, I am so fascinated in how a human being can kill another when the majority of us would never even consider doing such a thing. I was a victim in a violent relationship for 10 years and I find I am always looking for answers as to how people could want to hurt someone else, I think there was be many elements that contribute to this. I was a friend of Nicola edgington many years ago, I expect you have heard of her, that is also a very sad story. I would be fascinated to hear more about Paul bernardo and kara holmoko. Pike had a motive. The other two had no motive at all. They barely even knew Colleen. Doesn’t that make them WORSE than Pike?
Pike’s motive seems ‘crazy’ but she was genuinely feeling those feelings. Her rage inflicted on poor, innocent Colleen had reasoning (‘crazy’ reasoning!) behind it. WHAT made the others deliberately torture & brutally murder a girl that they hardly knew???

I've seen the crime scene photos for this case. My god. What poor Colleen went through. I can't believe the injuries they inflicted. It's horrific. She must have been beyond terrified. While I accept that Pike had the most horrendous life, I really struggle with her not being able to acknowledge that what she did was wrong. She knew what she was doing was wrong. She obviously had 18 years of pent up rage and anger and it all came out. I don't support the death penalty. If the courts in the US want to hand out a death sentence, they need to do it with all conspiritors involved. But Pike should never be let out. Ship should never be let out. Prison will at least give Pike structure and boundaries. But Pike and Ship should rot. As for the other woman, she deserves whatever she's got coming on the outside. She isn't going to be ya fav neighbour now is she. Pike is terrifying.
In cases like this, I can't help thinking of Stephen J. Dubner's analysis of the drop in crime in NYC and the legalisation of abortion 20 years prior to that fall. He suggests that easy abortions prvented a whole generation of criminals from ever being born.
Recent death sentence appeal was upheld 3 days ago. I'm so relieved.
This must be a particularly interesting case, like the last one. I very much love the way you delve into the psychology of the perpetrators, I think understanding their motives is the key to prevent crimes. I watched many true crime channels, but I found them superficial regarding this aspect, that's why I chose to join your "cult". The compassion you show for the (very often) troubled, traumatized, suffering children who eventually become murders is really outstanding, somehow therapeutic, and it taught me a lot 🙏 Also, I could improve my English! 😅👍

Everybody is blaming their "childhood upbringing" after murdering some innocent people. My question is - why are they taking their "childhood upbringing" on others, instead of taking it out on those who allegedly abused them? Why victimize people who have nothing to do with their "upbringing?"

She had awful things happen to her and then she chose to cause awful things to happen to someone else... id say she deserves the death penalty. Noone deserves that kind of murder. Shes not safe to ever be left out.
Im so sorry for the neglect and abuse Pike suffered. But she brutally murdered an innocent human, shows little to no remorse, isnt safe for society, could kill again, and is in prison as a result of her own horrific actions.

The moment Christa was set on killing Colleen, her humanity left. I've seen cases show a lot of people who went through similar, but they decided they were to create organizations for aid, live a life of giving, kindness, empathy to others too. This person decided a life of inflicting suffering was right. She tried attacking a person while in prison, too. She is damaged way past what is fixable.

Children and especially teenagers need a mother who loves them unconditionally but forces them to face their mistakes with love, as well as showing them right from wrong. They do not need a best friend that’s for someone at school, not their mother
WOW, not even 10 minutes into the video & explaining about the front temple lobe seriously relates to me about the explosive anger, very impulsive behaviour & not taking into account the consequences of actions. ❤ feel sorry for pike I had mine at a later stage in life & a supportive family but it did take a major toll on my life & others around me.

for a case to cover, you should look into the case of the mum who shot her daughters rapist/killer in court hall in Germany. cannot remember mothers name but daughter was called Ana, i think. she was only 7 years old.
Something similar happened with a friend of my family. His son was kidnapped by his karate instructor who had been SA’ing him for a while. Mr. Gary found out when the perpetrator would be arriving at the Baton Rouge airport. He waited for him to arrive, pulled out a gun and shot him. It was all on caught camera. And aired on television.
I don’t know how the case you are referring to turned out but the whole city supported Mr. Gary. I don’t think they could have found a jury that would have convicted him. He plead guilty to murder and received a 7 year suspended sentence, 5 years of probation and many many hours of community service.
His son, Jody, is a grown man now. He has written a book and travels around the country teaching parents how to spot the signs of a child predator.
I hope the victim in the case you are referring to is doing well.
1:43:47 I think the reason she hurt another girl despite being abused herself boils down to…being angry that she was the powerless girl…rather than turn on actual attackers, she seems to have acted out rage she might have felt about herself as a young child being too weak to fight off abusive adults. Does that make sense? Colleen was a doppelgänger for herself. The version who was abused. Maybe she thought that she was chosen for abuse because of something inherently inside of herself and she wanted to take out that rage on someone else.
I like your explanation it is a lot prettier than my view, she is a psychopath who doesn't know how to fake sympathy much less feel it and whatever the reason that caused it we are all safer with her being in prison for the rest of her life, she is terrifying.
I've seen an interview she gave, and in my opinion she has no remorse whatsoever.

Hi Emma, I came across your channel a few days ago and have only watched a few of your videos so far but, can I say you do an absolutely outstanding job of relating these cases, the way you provide background information and explanations is amazing! I was feeling massively sorry for pike and in my head trying to rationalise how her upbringing was in someway the route cause for her actions until you said that she thought she heard a noise and stopped to check before carrying on. She in a cold blooded killer who deserves the death penalty 100%.

Sleep with bipolar is so important. Severe lack of sleep can and will have severe consequences when it come to bipolar. My psych Dr solely focused on getting my sleep down to a T first everytime. It's so important.

I recall this case from back when Deadly Women use to air in the UK and I've always been fascinated by her and how her mind and emotional reactions, understandings, etc contribute to her what I think it's rare biological make up and mentality and so on so forth. I feel like she's from a criminology, biological & emtoinal also a developmental perspective she's incredibly interesting. As always another great video Emma, always appriciate how your approach is always detailed and realistic as well as being able to tell the story and present incredibly talented woman, great job Emma. 👏
Pike was a victim, hard to imagine all the things she's been through. However I think she is a lost cause the moment she decided that she wants to kill Colleen, that poor girl who paid for someone else's sins.
I really wish Pike had met a good, genuine person to guide her to the right path and heal her scars.
I have heard this case discussed many times but I never actually knew of Christa’s past in such detail. It’s so easy to hate her… but it does make you pause to remember her youth and upbringing as part of her choices. At least of her insane jealousy and insecurity when another female she felt was potentially going to “de-throne” her. But I still can’t excuse… bc I’ve had a sordid past, but at her age I knew right from wrong, and she went the wrong way in her life and decisions.
God Emma U are so right about how the perception of time is significantly long when someone is frightened & shocked & suffocating pain. The adrenaline rush makes our senses heighten which makes a minute feel like an hour! Colleen truely suffered a horrific assault before she met her untimely death!!😰Worse than a horror movie!!
There is no point keeping Christa Pike alive. What she did is more than terrible. It’s horrendous with a capitol H she didn’t kill for herself she killed for someone else which is a whole lot of dangerous with a capitol D. There is no excuse for that behaviour. Goodbye Cruel Girl.
when I was younger and my parents divorced, ny dad moved me away from my mom and back to South Africa to live with him and my stepmom.. I figured out the very first night that I was seperated by my only family for a reason; my stepmom was a severe violent alcoholic who legit didnt drink any other drink other than alcohol and when she got drunk she would become extreeeemely drunk and physically, emotionaly and verbally abused me right in front of my father every single night and I was told if I told anyone I would be killed and he ripped the phone out the wall when he caught me phoning my mom back in England and telling her what was happening...
One night she got extra violent and angry for no reason and after trying to attack me I ran screaming for help to my father and he stood one step away silently watching as she caught me and slammed me to the ground and got ontop of me and was strangling me with both of her hands.. he didn't do or say a single thing as I stared straight into his eyes as his girfriend strangled me till I passed out and only stopped then when my stepmoms own daughter ran in screaming (naked from her bath) and dragged her mom off of me..
I got so severely traumatised at night that I could be in my bedroom anf on my bed all day but as soon as I decided to sleep I would start hyperventilating and it felt like I was dying and my vision would black out and I'd see sparkles in front of me.. I have spend almost 20 years attempting to fight my severe PTSD around any alcohol and sleeping!
Dunno if anyone cares or will even read this but eventually I APPARENTLY (because I have no memory) Said a very vague cryptic goodbye to my mom over text on the day I was going to kill myself and she contacted distant family, of which one was a massive high up lawyer who had his own team of body guards to go and fetch me savely from my dad and then they also packed all my stuff and took me to live with them until they could figure out how to send me back to my mom in the UK.. I still suffer very severely with complex PTSD, depression, very bad insomnia and parasomnia with very very graphic intense recurrent night terrors.. due to all this I suffer very severe visual and audiological hallucinations whenever I go too long without sleep and when I do sleep (with the help of 4 different medications) I sleep walk, sleep talk, sleep eat and just about anything else during the night and have no memory of whatever occurs in my sleep!
I still cannot sleep with anyone apart from my mom in the house and I still have to wait for her to fall asleep first before I am able to relax enough to sleep!
Being middle aged now I can look back and freely admit I wasn’t emotionally prepared for much younger than 21

He was an 18 year old in Massachusetts, USA who died by suicide. His friend/girlfriend, Michelle Carter, encouraged him via text message to kill himself. It was tried as a case of involuntary manslaughter and it sparked a lot of debate about the limits of criminal responsibility and the logistics of prosecuting someone for homicide despite them not being physically present for the victim's death.
I'd be extremely interested in hearing your thoughts on this case because I know you'd present a thorough and thoughtful analysis of the psychology of all of those involved as well as the logic behind the judge's ruling and the legal implications for similar cases/crimes in the future.

This is absolutely horrific 😢 I really think these "people" should have the same done to them as they did to that poor girl, but that would be REAL justice and there's no such thing. I feel I have to address the issue with the pentagram, during the video I noticed that there were pentagrams, one at the beginning worn around the killers neck and later on a pentagram surrounded by flames, both of which were shown with a point at the top, which is pagan/wiccan, the satanic pentagram has a point at the bottom known as an inverted pentagram. I feel sad that this symbol is being misrepresented by these fools who carried out the murder, I'm norse pagan so I wear a pentagram necklace and I am extremely proud to do so, I like to think that we pagans do no harm and only do good in life, we project love and positive energy towards our fellow human, we love animals and nature, if anyone who calls themselves pagan and doesn't think and feel the same is not a true pagan. The pagan pentagram has been stolen and is falsely used and made out to be evil. I hope these monsters have an extremely horrible and unbearable life and suffer to the point where they wish they were dead. Rip Colleen ❤️ you will always be remembered, but those monsters won't. My brain can’t fathom how people can commit such a crime. But as a Grandmother I watch how parenting has changed . I always told my children I wasn’t their friend I was a mother & my love for them was very different. I would always love them, but rules were there to keep them safe.❤❤

I believe all should get the electric chair. They all participated in the torching, suffering and complete destruction of a fellow human being. All should have been punished the same way.

I am personally against the death penalty because of the number of miscarriages of justice that have occurred in my lifetime. I was not previously familiar with the Christa Pike case so thanks, Emma, for doing a video on it. While I can sympathise with the bad things that happened to her in her childhood, I don't think it can ever excuse the brutal way in which she and her accomplices tortured and killed Colleen Slemmer, and she has shown no remorse, so the appropriate penalty is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
What I will say though about the death penalty, is that if we're going to have it , it becomes meaningless if people spend so many years on Death Row without it being carried out. Pike was 20 when convicted, now she's 47. She might have died by now anyway, of natural causes. So long after the act, it is logical to commute her sentence to life imprisonment, without in any way condoning what she did.

Something about her inner dialog throughout the murder makes me feel like this is more of a nurture than a nature situation. It isn't fully in her, but all the diabolical shit that happened to her since the moment she was conceived led to this. I don't think had she stayed at her grandmother's and healed, she would have gone to do this. It's so heartbreaking
No excuse ever for killing someone. We all have a choice no matter out past, may that poor girl rest in peace.

If every traumatised child was excused for violence, murder, and mayhem , the world would be a bloodbath. Savagery will only be recognised for what it is, when humanity makes perpetrators accountable and stops seeking excuses and explanations for evil acts.
My thoughts? I am throughly disgusted with Pike's sad life, with Ship basically getting off with his sentencing & the other girl that walked away with 6 years probation. It all just shows the in competence of our justice system here in the states.

I personally think they should proceed with the chair, she’s there whinging about being killed but has 0 remorse for that poor girl, I’d let the victims family flick the switch and good riddance. It’s ok blaming upbringing which was undoubtedly terrible but so many people have similar or worse upbringings but don’t turn into sadistic murderers.

I feel absolutely horrible about Pike's childhood & upbringing!! She went through horrific things & didn't get the help she needed. A LOT of people went through horrific trauma 😪 as children & won't hurt people or murder someone.
I was groomed, raped, sold, & under mind control. I was tortured until my mind shattered. My uncle would throw me in freezing cold ice baths if I said no or "misbehave". Tied to chairs.. I have witnessed & been through HORRIFIC THINGS. I have PTSD, Anxiety, flashbacks, & I'm very sensitive. I tell my story to help people. I would never abuse, hurt, or murder someone. Yes I know Pike had brain trauma & mental illness. Her mother is an absolute MOMSTER. I'm sorry, but what Pike did Is bonechilling! I think she should be locked up for LIFE with NO PAROLE PERIOD. She enjoyed torturing & murdering Colleen! Colleen did not do anything wrong.. she was VICIOUSLY SLAUGHTERED FOR NO REASON! The BF & their friend didn't help the situation, LOCK THEM ALL UP FOR LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE! If they let Pike out she could do it again. The mom, should have been locked up too!!
