I've noticed in a lot of your most recent videos you have stated the victim name in the title instead of the killers name. I don't know if this is a conscious decision but I love it! It's very respectful to the victims and they deserved to be remembered much more than the people who have taken their lives
This is something I really respect Emma for!! Unfortunately with true crime especially the more infamous cases it's the killer that is known! There are the odd outliers but for the most part no one can really name victims! Jeffrey Dahmer is very topical currently & I'm pretty sure most of us couldn't name a single one of his victims!
I absolutely think the killers should be pushed to one side, you can't talk about the crime without mentioning them obviously but we should be remembering the victims, not the killer.

As a probation officer of almost 20 years I winced every time failings were mentioned. The first lesson you’re taught “if it’s not recorded it didn’t happen!” just awful and embarrassing and I know it means nothing but I want to apologise. Heartbreaking and I’m so sorry to Gemma’s family 💔
I feel your pain. I’m a retired teacher. The level of genuine distress upon seeing a child or a family being failed is horrible. The fear of being the person who messes up and lets someone down is terrifying. It doesn’t help that we have a Government which has no moral compass when it comes to making cuts. I only dealt with the Probation Office once, 36 years ago. At that time, the service operated as a mediation service between estranged parents. I found the gentleman who called to see me was absolutely lovely, charming and very, very fair (not just to me either 🙃). Keep up the good work; most of us recognise that this service really does matter. Thank you 😊 xx

My nephew died of Sid’s at 6month old over 10yrs ago now….the screams of my sister in law, not long after they found him, haunt me to this day! I have never heard anything sound so heartbreakingly painful in my life! I tear up when ever I think about the sound of a mother who’s just found out her child is deceased! 😢…I only pray I never have to feel the pain I’ve seen expressed vocally in such circumstances 😢
I heard it many times working hospital security and it’s a haunting sound for sure. It’s very apparent who is not grieving in those moments as well.
That's tragic. Poor mother must have been shattered knowing she couldn't even have done anything about it. One moment yo child is giggling and sounding out words, next thing u know they're quiet forever 😭 I'm so fortunate to be african and such things don't happen here. Oh my goodness😞

Thank you Emma, for dedicating the telling of this case to Gemma's family. I can't imagine their pain since the senseless and brutal murder of their kind, loving, and compassionate daughter Gemma. Johnson had no right to lie to Gemma about his criminal history, and the parole services should have been completely transparent about Johnson's crime. Gemma didn't have a chance to choose her partner based on who he really was. Without a doubt, Johnson and the parole services put Gemma in grievous danger, leading to her death. I am certain that Gemma's family is so appreciative of Emma's brilliant and sensitive presentation of the worst thing that had ever happened to them. I would like Gemma's family to know that people all over the world care about them and are saddened by her loss.
Her family still let her move in with someone she met in prison! I have an offending background and I still won't let my daughter date a prisoner.
If a 25 year old man enters into relationship with a 16 year old, it can't be anything but negative. I don't care how mature the 16 year old seems to be, they are not mature enough.
Why are parole boards not held accountable? This is so devastating and for them to not even issue an apology to the family is disgusting. They could have prevented this. My heart breaks for the families who are left picking up the pieces after this kind of thing happens. 💔

Part of what hurts so much in this case is that Gemma’s parents embraced him too, gave his past the benefit of the doubt, and believed in him as a person. The betrayal was to them too, and I’m sure that the confusion between anger at her killer and empathy for mental illness in someone they previously trusted was mind-boggling. To reckon with all that, only to discover his true past, that horrifying image, and the preventable nature of this crime is unreal to me. Any road to closure they may have just started on…believing in a random tragedy due to illness alone…was wrecked. And now their trust in the world, the systems that support us, and their sense of reality is shaken deeply. It sounds like this was a whole family of good people who welcomed a new person into their home with generosity. They did nothing wrong. Of all the people for this to happen to, three people with such huge hearts. Wow this case broke me. I hope her family don’t blame themselves for their openness to him, and instead draw strength from the knowledge that they are among the best people out there, who we should all aspire to be more like.

I once called the police when a couple upstairs were having a big fight and she was shouting ‘you’ve broken my arm’. When the police arrived and went upstairs she denied everything. I knew I’d done the right thing, but she couldn’t even accept help at that point. Sad.
You have highlighted gaps in the system in this episode. This is just one really catastrophic example of the gaps. How many more gaps have occurred without repercussions have happened? It's so tremendously sad for Gemma's family. The case review centres on this case but do other gaps get investigated when something like this happen?

I feel so much for the family and Gemma. Totally let down by services and so many chances for services to intervene. I want to say thank you to Gemma’s family because they have fought so hard and this will hopefully stop this from happening again to another family and hopefully lessons have been learned and training given to professionals . I work In Mental health and I was always taught if it isn’t written down it didn’t happen. There’s so many questions to ask about why. It must be awful for Gemma’s family.

Wow, this is infuriating. If the officers would have disclosed the correct information this could have been avoided. When you said her mother screamed, I can imagine how that would sound and it shook me to the core. My heart breaks for her family 🙏
I’ve taken subutex for years I’m now 42 and never had any of the negative side effects, it’s a fantastic medication in the right hands ….Thankyou again for another fascinating video ❤
True. But a lot of prisoners start snorting it in prison as it’s easy to obtain and works well if you don’t have a habit apparently
Very interesting - I wondered about Subutex & it’s side effects. Opioids don’t make a person violent, & neither does Valium - quite the opposite, in fact, so it is puzzling to hear them blamed here, unless this murderer had some weird reaction to them. Also, cannabis isn’t something that is normally a trigger for violence. The violence in this young man obviously came from within. I can imagine that alcohol would have inflamed his natural propensity for violence, though.
Another thing is that surely the murderer’s sister Lindsay would have talked about her brother’s past with Gemma’s family, since she was so close to them? How is it possible, or even likely, that the parents, in a close-knit family, didn’t know more about the male they had known for over 9 years, who had lived in their family home with them for a couple of those years, who had been involved with their daughter on an intimate level for so long? It honestly defies belief, to me, & - I hate to write this, because it smacks of victim-blaming - but it makes their protestations against “the system” (some of which seem absolutely appropriate protestations, because that system seems to have fallen down badly in some places) really suspect. It makes the parents look - to me, & perhaps incorrectly - like they want to lay blame rather than accept even just a tiny smidge of responsibility eg our daughter made a poor choice, & we really should have found out more about this older man who was a prisoner on the tail end of a longish sentence when she met him, at the very young age of 16.
Well, perhaps I’m wrong, & if so, I’m very sorry. Some things here just don’t ring true to me. Surely people aren’t this naive? And for God’s sake, if you’re a 16 year old male or female, don’t start up a romantic correspondence with an unknown prisoner & expect good things to come from it. And if you are the parents of an adolescent who is romantically involved with an ex-con, at least - the very least - find out what the hell he or she was in jail for! Better yet - just don’t let your teenaged child get involved with unknown, older people who have been clapped up in prison, & are currently incarcerated.
There is just no way to pretty-talk this one. The murderer should have been locked up in prison for life after the first murder, in my opinion - or - better yet, executed. Poor Gemma should have been a little more responsible for her own safety, & not made such an appalling choice as getting involved with a frigging convict! The parents should at least have bothered to find out exactly who they were inviting into their lives & home, & the parole board, the prison system etc - whew - what a colossal failure on all fronts. This case is just a failure by everybody involved, as far as I can see, & I hope to God that something good can come out of it.
@@darkallegiance666 I have to disagree with you on valium doesnt make someone violent. It definitely definitely does if abused. It can make people extremely irritable, have outburts of anger, black outs where they cannot remember a thing for the whole time they are taking them and completing changes their judgement, when abused it leads to people making very very poor choices and impulsive behaviour. Not to mention the withdrawals from valium are awful and those alone could make people angry/violent. If you mix alcohol with valium you are literally dancing with the devil, alot of people in my country (Ireland) are in prisons for crimes they cant remember committing due to drinking alcohol and taking valium together. We call it "a charge sheet cocktail" over here because you are likely to get arrested. There is no drug i hate more than valium, it stole the life of my partner 8years ago. As for opiates i can't comment on them as i dont have any experience but the withdrawals are ment to be worse than hell, so i can imagine that would spark people to lose there temper. Not that i think any drug is completely to blame for someone murdering another but when abused it can definitely be a contributing factor.
I have to agree with you 100% about gemmas family, i agree if the sister was close enough to call to them she must of spoke to them at some stage of his crimes. Another thought i had was even if his family was not completely aware of his past (even though they have admitted they knew he was in prison for murder so I'm confused of how they didn't know, that alone would be enough info for me) i do believe Gemma was fully aware. I think she chose to turn a blind eye to it.
I love Emmas videos however I do find her opinions at time extremely biased towards the victims. I found this video a bit long winded with too much of her opinion and snarky comments.
While the system definitely could of done more, and did fail, the family however cannot fully put the blame on them. They have to take accountability that Gemma made a poor decision to trust this man knowing he was in prison for murder before, and seeing his mental health decline. The family made a poor decision not intervening in their 18year olds relationship. I also am shocked if they didnt know she was in a relationship for 2years, its just abit of a coincidence they claim they didnt know until she turned 18 which is the legal age. I also hope this doesnt sound like I'm blaming the victim or victims family but I'm just giving a non biased opinion. You definitely were not the only one to pick up on the fact not all the details added up, I've found a few times in different videos Emma doesn't address what the victim could of done differently or hold any accountability for poor choices

When I was on probation and started using drugs, as long as I attended a drug centre my probation officer explained that if they re-arrested every ex prisoner that used class A's, there simply wouldn't be enough space in the jails. As usual, it comes down to money. I spoke to many women inside who told me their experience had been the same. "As long as you tell probation you've used and don't take a drug test, they don't really care"!

This case brought me to tears of, sadness, anger, emphathy....I would love to see you do research review of, "Nuture vs. Nature, (Including the influence of social media...does it really take a village?...Isn't the internet a type of villiage? Scary...who really knows another over the technological advances today)? The authorities in their villages, in both cases let these children down. Love your channel.

This is so sad & could have been avoided by keeping a close eye on this man after he was released. He also should have had mandatory ongoing psychiatric treatment. As you said not everyone with mental illness is a danger to others, in fact it’s a small portion, but when it comes to psychosis & substance abuse, that’s another story. I went through this twice with an ex partner & it’s terrifying & I had to get him out of my home for my safety in the end. Sadly he took his own life 2 months after I ended our relationship, I tried to help him for so long as I see Gemma tried so hard to help Johnson, sadly to her detriment 😢, sometimes you have to save yourself.

From the sounds of it, you know them personally and knew her. Please pass to them my condolences because she should definitely be that ray of sunshine in their lives. No one's life should be needlessly taken but definitely not when there are state officials responsible for keeping people safe, just drop the ball. When are politicians ever going to learn their lessons? It wasn't individual people who failed her, it was the politicians that wanted to pretend everything was ok rather than doing their jobs. Unfortunately that's becoming worse and worse in public service. People are so busy focusing on their careers and what THEY want that to look like, they forget, or just don't care, that there are people who DEPEND on them doing their job right, and it just doesn't get done. Then when it's time for someone to be held responsible, well, they're certainly not going to take responsibility for the failings either. Yes you're right, it does make my blood boil because the same crap happens here in the states and the people doing the failing AREN'T the people suffering. It's everyone who depends on them!

The probation services saw the perfect opportunity to get this pos off their books in poor Gemma , i think the lack of information given to Gemma's family and herself was on purpose. I mean, how many times are signs ignored and good people's lives ruined?. A young lady taken too soon because of this vile creature . I send my love to her family and friends.

I watch a lot of Crime Dramas I've never never heard of a probation department informing someone and their families when they've found out an offender is dating that person. Usually when an offender is granted parole that offender has to check in with their probation officer and that's it. Also, I don't remember any of the videos I've watched of Emma where she has mentioned it, except this one.

Probation service should be overhauled, and started up with PROFESSIONALS, that know what criteria they need to cover, I know it's too late for both victims Families I hope they go forward with legal action!

Just watched Emma on "Britain's Darkest Taboos" on the murder of little Ellie Butler by the pos Ben Butler.....oh my goodness.That poor grandfather doing everything to try to rescue Ellie and unable to get legal support for that, Ellie being taken from her loving home to be murdered within weeks. I hope Emma covers this story on her channel. Ben............vile and vile and vile and evil....

I'm a similar age to Gemma, and it makes me think about all I've done and all the experiences I've had in the last decade.... everything Gemma has missed out on, it's so sad.
From this day I will definitely remember Gemma every year because September 15th is my birthday.

I am wondering if his family warned Gemma and he mr family about the real nature of his conviction. They obviously knew about it and also knew he was mentally unstable and could be violent. Did they share their knowledge and concerns with Gemma.
Heart wrenching that Gemma and her parents were not warned about the imminent danger of being with this convicted killer.

Hi Emma! I am from California🏝💙 I LOVE YOUR STYLE! It helps that you have a degree in psychology;) BTW I always have family and friends calling me crazy because I am so overprotective and safe with my kids and when I go out. BUT AFTER all these videos I feel like it's ok to be like this and better safe than sorry. Also, the reason I am this way is because I was molested by my grandfather as a child and I lived in a household with domestic violence and verbal and emotional abuse from parents as well as bullied at school. Thank you for being you:)

Valium, alcohol, and weed... How were those kids even standing? The combination of those three should have had them comatose... Anyone who knows anything about drugs knows that combination of drugs had absolutely nothing to do with that murder... These are just evil creatures that should never be allowed to be free again. With that many downers in their system, I'd hate to see how they act at full capacity.

The officers and parole board should have informed the family of the nature of his crimes. Also, why didn't his sister give her a heads up? Was she not aware that he lied to Gemma? I know he's family but where's the concern for another woman?

He can't say it was through no fault of his own, he took the drugs that led to his worsening mental state. How the services could be so weak in their "reasons" for not doing the bare minimum level of the work required in this case is absolutely diabolical, despicable beyond belief. I am so beyond words with the system, or lack thereof in this case, dismissals and charges should have been brought against individuals and organisations.

This is so sad. My parents died before i turned 32 my twin brother died when we were 35 he ended his life. I can’t imagine one of my children’s life been taken away. This just makes me so sick. I have kids this age.. 🤍💫
What a monster I'm a fraid for multiple murders even if he was 15 when the first murder happened the Death penalty should be brought back anyone can snap and murder someone but when it happens more than once the murderer should live no longer .R.I.P Gemma you deserved to be loved not killed.

This is unbelievable! I got an OSMAN warning because the police thought I was seeing so.eone who'd just got out of jail for attempted murder on his previous girlfriend. I wasn't seeing him and did t see him again after that and this poor girl wasn't told she was living with a monster?? This cou try is an embarrassment with its sentencing absolutely shameful!
Ugh, the police have a guy who is on licence covered in blood, and don't immediately check out his home for a victim? Those parents should never have had to go looking for Gemma.
Also, why did Lyndsey not tell Gemma about Johnson's violent history, especially as he was taking drugs.
I was thinking both these things. Lindsey and Gemma seemed to have a good, or at least decent, relationship. Why didn't she confirm that Gemma knew her brother had KILLED someone? My guess is that she was under the impression Gemma had full knowledge of the crime, or didn't want to mess up a good thing for her brother (who she was probably convinced was rehabilitated). Or maybe she did tell Gemma and we just don't know bc Gemma never told anyone out of fear they'd judge her for staying with him? I guess I just don't understand why they didn't call emergency services and have him held for a mental health check? (Maybe they don't have that system there?? Where I live you can have someone held on a 72 hour mental health hold if they are displaying these types of behaviors so they can be assessed and helped) Or why didn't Lindsey contact his parole officer with concerns anout his behavior? Not trying to shift blame, but it does seem really short sighted.
And ya, why didn't the police immediately check his home address, vehicle, etc? I mean, isn't a convicted murderer wandering around, covered in blood and mumbling about the devil, probable cause for searching his home/vehicle? Seems like a lot of people really sh*t the bed on this one.
Gemma absolutely did not know about Danny's first crime she tried researching about danny with our older sister but because of his age there is nothing at all on the internet about his first crime. We wonder too why on the Thursday lyndsay didn't speak up and inform gemma as this could of been so different. I appreciate emma has spoken respectfully about Danny's sister as gemma did have quite a close relationship with her aswell as his mother but as soon as the police turned up and we found out gemma was dead we have never heard from Danny's family again. X
@@kristiallen8204 Thank you for your response. I'm a mother myself and can't imagine the absolute, all encompassing pain losing a child must cause. But ya, it seems really irresponsible for no one in the family to report his erratic to the parole board, police or mental health services. I would 100% have informed someone if my brother was acting this way, especially if he had brutally murdered someone in the past. It's not like he shot someone accidentally while playing with a gun he didn't know was loaded...he beat a man with a crowbar while his friend repeatedly stabbed him. That's not an accident or a mistake.
I totally agree with you but we (gemmas family) did not know of Danny's past at all. We didn't think for one second we would need to inform any of these. Gemma was in contact with the doctor the day before she actually went into the surgery. I absolutely agree with what you are saying if it was my brother I would of done this absolutely! I was just clearing up that gemma did not know at all about Danny's past x
We did not get told anything we didn't even know what life licence meant never mind that he was on it. It's hard to believe but we generally did not know anything about his man everything we thought and believed didn't exist. We also had to grieve for a man that didn't exist anymore. Shame on Danny's family for not doing anything more even after lyndsay saw evil in his eyes she knew what he was and she didn't warn anyone. Danny did want to see his mam the day before but she had to go shopping. I feel like there's so many much missed opportunities it's so sad. My mam was in full contact with gemma throughout this gemma actually left the house late tea time Thursday alone if she thought she was in any danger she would of come home but she never. We honestly couldn't of done anything different as we did not know. X

Absolutely heartbreaking case. I think the MOJ failed massively in this case. I’m a trainee forensic psychologist and have worked with people who have killed while suffering psychosis. There is no condoning their actions, don’t get me wrong, but I feel like this could have possibly been prevented had the relevant agencies done their jobs correctly and informed those in his life of what his risks are. This case is a little trickier given that his first offence had no mental illness involved though. I really hope he gets the therapy and intervention he clearly needs. And my heart goes out to his poor victims families.

Just got on this one a wee bit late. But all I can say with my breaking heart is that criminal negligence was commited by all the supposed 'criminally responsible' parties! This poor girl, her family, the family of David and all who loved and cared for them, have been unconscionably let down by the 'justice' system. I can only hope that the change in the system remains. And that no-one gets a 'get out of jail card' because the paperwork wasn't done properly/ignored/disregarded! What an utterly frustrating case!

Edit: I'm apologising to Gemma's family vicariously. I'm also apologising to Johnson because he was also let down. And had he not been, this frightful play may have not had the opportunity to come to the heartbreaking fruition it did.
To Gemma's family I am so sorry for your needless loss and for the loss of Gemma's father. I know how you're feeling because I lost a much loved sister at a young age. May God bless you all in the years to come and god bless Gemma. She is in heaven and in no more pain from this predator that entered her life then stole it from her. As someone who was opioid addicted (thanks to our awesome health care system), I never once in the over ten years wanted to kill anybody nor did I had such delusions. I think it must have been something deeper in his psyche and, of course, the combinations of drugs used. I'm not trying to say opioids are great, but also if you are somebody, who has to take them due to medical reasons, it doesn't make you "crazy", if it's controlled by you and professional.
Just listening to this, at every single turn, the "system" failed Gemma. Not having a facility to test a offenders urine or blood work while on probation...is insanity in its self. Her family is amazing, 9 years! Once again the victim & the family are victimized by the "system", while the law is so concerned about the rights of the perpetrator!

This is such a heartbreaking case and one ive not heard of suprisingly. there was so many different departments that failed here and they should take responsibility so wrong, Gemma seemed like such a beautiful soul absolutely heartbreaking my heart goes out to them all...its still happening though i personally have a family member who has been suffering from paranoid delusions we have tried everything and cant get any help, we keep being told that crisis team etc cant do anything with out a referral from his GP and he wont go to the GP as he genuinely believes his delusions even had the police out and wouldn't do anything either there's no help.. That man shouldn't of been released in the 1st place, hopefully he dies in prison this time

yes in that moment he was having a mental break but his choices of drug taking not cooperating with his licence conditions lieing and minimising his previous crimes etc should indicate that he didnt take responsibilty for his mental health and wellbeing
When I was 5, my mom’s oldest brother was murdered. The man who did it ended up getting 12 years for stabbing my uncle repeatedly. They really played up that this man was drunk and had a 6th grade education and it was “self defense’, even tho he was pinned in the back of a 2-seater car (at 6’ 3” and 280 lbs) and the witness denied this. The witness disappeared before court and has never been seen or heard of again. When he was released, my family wasn’t even notified. My mom ran into him in wal mart of all places after his release. My uncle was a kind and gentle man who loved everyone and would never hurt a fly. I often wonder if his killer ever felt one ounce of the pain my family has suffered. His loss left ripples through time for so many of those who loved him. It’s just unimaginable the thought of taking a life and not feeling any sense of responsibility.

It wasn't like that at all. My mam didn't know gemma was dating him when she was 16. But your right I would try my best to not let my daughter like my mam would of done the same aswell. But at the age of 16 we don't have that much of a say a person will do what they want to to .

I'm genuinely curious to why no one asked any further questions about his incarceration and the specifics of his crime? I know hind sight is 20/20 but from the details it sounds like there were some opportunities to get more information.
From the video it sounds like the family even after the explanation from him as well as the probation officer still were not satisfied/convinced so why did no one call on their own not in his presence?
The age difference alone is enough to question regardless of Gemma's age when the family first found out.
Our system in the US is extremely different we are not told the details of someone's crime but we can also look up inmate number court records etc. online and request police reports w/ a freedom of information request.
And as I say them Emma states the question I ask regarding the GP ! This GP should be ashamed
