THE PICK AXE KILLER - KARLA TUCKER

  • In June 1983, Houston, Texas, 2 people were killed with a pickaxe - the kind of grisly double murder that would dominate the headlines any day of the week. But this crime captured more attention than usual - because the killer was a 5 foot 3, 121-pound woman. Her brutal slayings, and her subsequent reformation as a Born-Again Christian, divided a nation when it came to her fate. This is what happens when rehabilitation isn’t an option.
This is the case of Karla Tucker

I am an atheist and my convictions tell me that it is not at all necessary to believe in a deity to, firstly, have strong moral convictions regarding what is right and wrong and, secondly, to turn a life of crime into a life of value. Whether or not Karla Tucker should have been executed is one question, but I wonder if she would have had so many advocates for staying her execution had she been every bit as reformed and virtuous but had achieved it not through a religious conversion but through a personal, "god free" moral realignment. I very much doubt it.

Yes karla changed!! i can see it from the time she didnt have a relationship with God until now you can see that glow. she has repentent before Godand ask for forgiveness and that's all that matters. God forgave her she became a born again christian. she wasnt afraid to die. once she was heading to the gurney she said from the people who where around her " i cant wait to see Jesus face to face"!! she lead some women on death row to Jesus Christ and gave her testimony what God has done for her.. I know we will see karla again she is with Jesus. its not a religious thing, its a transformation a relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!!!

We can change, but it takes a long time. Jail, the punishment is loss of liberty. Whether people think we have it too easy or not. We don’t. We’re caged and rightfully so. For a non-predator/narcissist etc, for a normal person who screwed up? It takes all that time alone with your own head. It means you have to care about others as much as yourself, so you can empathise and feel their pain, to care about the damage you did. There’s a few of us about. Thing is the law and the markers in place throughout the legal and prison system are too basic and generic to notice the difference. That’s why there are soo many failures time and time again. 4 months in isn’t enough time. She replaced drugs with religion, imo. Addiction doesn’t end like that. She found a replacement that seemed to be healthy to others. But it was just a band aid. I doubt it would have lasted if she got out without a shit load of counselling and support.

Too many criminals turn to religion in the hope that it will be a 'get out of jail free card'. In life we make choices. Tucker chose to take dangerously high levels of drugs and alcohol which fuelled her horrendous attacks. I'm sure that, given the choice, her victims would have gladly devoted their lives to religion for the good of others rather than die at her hands. Tucker made certain they did not have that choice. Why then should she be afforded the opportunity she denied her victims? The correct sentence was given, upheld and duly carried out.

      Absolutely

    • @Cdtruecrime
      @Cdtruecrime Před rokem +3

I’m torn. I don’t feel like she chose to take drugs & alcohol, I feel like that addiction was set on her as a child by her mother.
If you’ve never known another lifestyle, you become desensitized to sex, violence and sexual violence.
So many religious conversions are laughable excuses & attempts at sympathy, but at the same time, a sincere conversion can change every element of a person.
I honestly wonder if the prison environment, the structure & separation (for the most part) from men & people looking to use her may have allowed her to reflect on herself for the first time in her life. The change may have been real.
If death is meant to punish, then she deserved it. She did the crime. It was horrific. If you support the death penalty it’s hard not to say she earned it.
But it is true she could have done some good from inside prison. Maybe not enough to ever make up for the murders, but more than would happen with her dead.
I’m ok with the sentence being carried out, I think I’d be ok if it had been commuted to life in prison.
I just keep thinking about her childhood. There’s no switch that flips at 18 giving autonomous thought & ideas on how to live a decent life. You learn from your experiences & your environment. In her case it’s not surprising she’d end up a killer.
I have empathy for the 8 year old who shouldn’t have even known what drugs were & the 14 year old who was pimped out by her own mom- the person on this planet most responsible for giving a sense of love, stability & self worth.
I can see how the prison system, broken as it is, could have given her a whole new life that might have been positive enough to help others.
I guess if I ruled the world I’d have left it to a vote of both victims loved ones. Their opinion is what matters.

I was still offering the benefit of the doubt in regards to whether or not she truly reformed until the comment about skipping down the hall to her execution... then I knew it was a manipulative tactic on her end all along. A truly reformed person, who truly knew the gravity of their sins/crimes, would have taken that walk with the full weight of that gravity and the seriousness of the situation on their shoulders. To me, all I see from that "joyous" behavior is an act of manipulation and a mask of "winning". She manipulated those around her until the very end, and by doing so she caused many people to suffer with her death, be emotionally conflicted, she gained the fame she always wanted too which had to have been a bonus. If she was truly religious/had truly found god she'd know her sins while alive meant she'd be going to hell, not heaven, so her absolute conviction she was going to a better place and would soon be with god was nothing but a facade she put up to gain the sympathy and support of those around her. She was playing the long con game, in my opinion, and in the end it didn't change the outcome she'd been trying so hard to change, by fooling so mang people. I believe she would have happily allowed others to truly take her place and be executed for her crimes... and that isn't a reformed person. Let's not forget that the most psychopathic among us have the ability to pretend better than the best performers, to live a picture perfect life on the surface, while underneath the facade they show the world, they are monsters who do horrible things when they think nobody is looking and fantasize about unspeakable things while smiling to your face as if they are the most harmless, trustworthy, and reliable person you could ever meet. That isn't to say a life in prison without the possibility of parole, with mandatory rehabilitation efforts until death, wouldn't have been a sufficient punishment... She could have been allowed to continue the helpfulness act indefinitely and done more good. But she absolutely never should have been released, as the monster lurking beneath her mask would have resurfaced the moment she got the opportunity to commit more crimes, and she was clearly intelligent enough to do a better job of not getting caught the next time. I seriously think there ought to be punishment for the parents who raised such broken children to begin with though, to help prevent more tragedies like this from continuing to happen. Childhood abuse, negligence, exploitation, even abandonment... we need to do more as a society to protect children. It's easier to raise a sound child to adulthood than it is to try and fix the brokenness after the damage has already been inflicted. If there was harsher penalties for harming children, less people would do it.

Forgiveness is such a difficult idea. It can be the task of a lifetime. For the families of the victims, if they forgave and said commute, they should get that. As for her having special treatment, she was a drug abusing, prostituted murderer. It's a hard sell to say she was an attractive perp. I believe, have seen, the most extremely broken individuals, abused and wild, become functional after studying their bibles and seeking redemption. If you are someone who has never been loved, God gives you the love you never knew. I have seen that 180° happen. I hope she really was saved. But personally I have a harder less divine ability to forgive. Some people are deeply compassionate and can forgive such injury. I struggle especially with child molesters. I have to leave that up to Jesus because my heart isn't that big.

    • @jacksgl777
      @jacksgl777 Před rokem +1

To me, even if the family of the victims forgive and want to commute the murderer’s sentence, the punishment should be upheld. The drugs and prostitution didn’t cause Tucker to be aggressive and happily kill people in a horrendous way. Aileen’s story and personality were different (and IQ). Tucker, herself, chose kill. One doesn’t get out of the punishment because they changed behaviors later and had a good personality and good looks. If she found God and Jesus, I am glad. Never forget, Ted Bundy was good looking and had a good personality too. Just doesn’t negate the crime.

She was executed in 2015 as the result of orchestrating the murder of her then husband. She had tremendous remorse and accepted her death sentence.
I have to say that it broke many of our hearts when she was executed 💔
We all knew it would eventually happen, however, after getting to know her for 5 yrs, it was crushing.
As for Karla, I am honestly torn. While her crime was beyond heinous and cruel, I can't help but feel that she tried to use it as a tool to prevent others from continuing in a life of crime.
So many of the murderers that I met while in prison, had absolutely NO remorse and continued their violent behavior towards other inmates/officers.
I also have to put myself in the victim's shoes and empathize with the soul shattering pain that Karla caused.
Ultimately, it's an all around tragic situation, bc the Dept of Corrections claims to 'rehabilitate' inmates, yet they fail to do so.
The justice system is broken in the US, especially in the south. Systemic racism is at the core of incarceration and sadly, I don't see it changing anytime soon 😢
Anyway, I absolutely adore you and appreciate your genuinely honest approach to these cases 💗

I served 14 years and the system is broke in the UK too, I believe she believed she’d changed, but having been out for 5 years now? I see how easy it is to build confidence and hope, funny enough, in jail. Then, get out and to have to deal with the real world, sober? It’s hard. There’s an identity crisis takes place. Her test would’ve been outside of prison and I don’t think that’s a risk that would’ve been worth taking. This wasn’t a fight gone wrong, or self defence. Worse still, she got off on it. That’s dark stuff! If she’d discovered knitting or origami instead of God, no one would have mentioned her again till she was executed.

I personally don't believe anyone should be put to death. For me it's not about being "Team Murderer" or "Team Victim." It's an archaic form of punishment rife with the same racial and class inequities as the criminal system in general, only now the penalty is death. I don't believe it does anything for victims' families either, frankly. If the death penalty is an option and a killer gets life without parole, the family feels their loss is minimized. If the killer is sentenced to death, the victim's family still has to go through years and years of appeals, stays, etc, etc, with all the stress and trauma they bring. The death penalty is also a deterrent to guilty pleas, resulting in more lengthy, expensive and traumatic trials. In modern societies there is no tangible benefit to the death penalty over life without parole.

I think she genuinely believed and was afraid of going to hell which motivated her positive change and I feel empathy for the horrible childhood she had. But I also don’t know if someone’s personality can change - did she have professional help to genuinely heal the trauma she suffered that damaged her?

So glad to hear your take on this case Emma, masterful as always. We met at your Mansfield show and I mentioned how my neurological disability has caused me to become aggressive at times (though nowhere near the level Karla was, even when she was a teen.)
I've never been I involved with drugs, and only drink a small amount, rarely (unless we count caffeind!)
I feel that as Karla's extreme substance misuse began when she was 8, it's almost comparable to a severe neurological disorder, in terms of the impact on her brain.
She wouldn't have got the death penalty if she'd had an IQ of 60, maybe not even if there had a disorder like mine, yet her brain was equally as impacted. On
Though as I've said, I've never caused GBH, I have had fights with housemates unsupported living services, and though I've generally been much smaller than these housemates, as well as having visual impairment, I hac e generally been the one blamed and given consequences as a result of these incidents, as unlike many people I've been inappropriately places with, I have a high IQ and no form of learning disability. Support workers argue that I know what I'm doing and a i and so doesn't, because they have som ed level of learning disability.
I dont, but I have an impulse control ussue. The same can be said for Karla, magnified by 1000.
If course I feel for the victims and their loved ones, especially Deborah as Jerry had been abusive to Maria's best friend, though didn't deserve such extreme vengeance.
I've watched a lot on Karla a nd I believe her reformation was genuine. It's interesting to me t h a t so e inmates less effort to reform and help others harvest on Death Row for quite as long as Karla did.
I think Karla could have helped other inmates, though I m not religious myself, faith certainly t turned Karla's life around.
If Deborah's brother Ron was advocating for Karla to remain In prison rather than being executed, I wonder who the execution brought comfort to.
To me, the bigger issue is that the system here, in America and elsewhere, needs fixing so that children with no chance, as Karla was, don't escalate to the poun t of committing the heinous acts she did. Xx

I can appreciate that after being imprisoned and forced to clean up for what was likely the first time since she was 8 she probably did realise what she had done. But as to being no future threat? Who is to say the second she had her hands on alcohol or drugs it wouldn't have been exactly the same again? I think the sentence was right. I don't think she would have done it without the lifestyle but there was no attempt to escape the lifestyle. So, right that the sentence was carried out as planned but more important than ever these children are identified and removed from the horrific situation many find themselves in as early as possible.

I am not condoning the crimes they have committed and that in most cases they should be released but I do believe we have a duty of care.

I don't agree with the death penalty anyway, but I think Karlas personality probably developed once she no longer had all those drugs in her system following her arrest. She had never had a chance prior to do that as her life was so chaotic. Her crimes were terrible and a life sentence would have been imposed in other states without the death penalty.

The "But for.." test should have been considered in her sentencing. Yes her comments at the time were unfathomably evil and devoid of human traits. Yes she got the sentence as guided under the statute at the time. But then if some of the family members of the victims asked for clemency, .... I don't know.

If she had of ever got out I fully believe she would snap back because she wouldn’t need to “hide” herself anymore.
The only honest thing she had was her describing the feelings she had of “climaxing” whilst landing those blows. I think in that moment she discovered who she really was. And she was trying to do anything possible to experience it again and get out.
Thankfully she got what she deserved, and she is where she belongs.

This is one of your more powerful, insightful videos, although all of your videos are informative and educational. I think what touched me the most about this is that you describe the transformation so beautifully, because that is how I saw her case.
Psychopathy is treatable from what I understand from my own late persons, perspective. And I think what she needed was purpose. That purpose may not have been beyond her death sentence, but she achieved what she had needed through the work of others.
Even if she was manipulative, along the way she found away to make some things better for others. I don’t know if it was in for me that she wanted but she does have that. She is famous now, and she got the attention that she’s so desperately craved. I think her life experiences were directly shaped by the horrible horrifying neglect and abuse that she had experienced, and even if she demonstrated psychopathic tendencies, no one sought to take care of her, or develop her character. Why she chose to brutally in hideously torture and murder people is beyond me. We all have choices in life. For whatever reason she made that choice. And she paid for it with her life.
She did give her life some meaning, because in Deathrow of all places she had to of had some kind of emotional support to be able to turn this around. She had every right to fight for her life and Peele this death sentence.
The advantages of her circumstances were clear, and she did get that emotional support and social support, because she was a very pretty lady who is articulate and had embraced God and discovered her nurturing side. However, this didn’t save her life in the fact that gender did play a role. She wasn’t given any leniency whatsoever.
My empathy is from the little girl in her who is so abused, and especially to the victims she did have especially the family members who had to work through this horror in their own life, and had to deal with the trauma of the suffering in the loss. And that pain and suffering might still be there.
How do we grapple with that inner conflict even of ourselves when we revert to our carnal instincts and how he managed to stop ourselves, and also being good people who care about other people. It always seems that things in life are black and white but they aren’t. Maybe this was the lesson and all of this after all.

I don't understand why becoming a born again Christian is a reason to keep a death row inmate alive. Never once have I heard of anyone getting the same treatment if they convert to any other religion, Christian or Pagan. It always feels ingenuine, a way to garner sympathy because being Christian seems to mean you can do no wrong, and you've been saved from something. At least that's the feeling it gives me. It's great that she used her experiences to help others, and that she was able to change people's minds on certain things where execution etc, is related, but she still brutally and happily murdered two people. I understand from personal experience that meth changes a person, but she still took two lives, those people will never get the chance to eat another banana or peach, or convert to any religion, or help young offenders, get married or fix their marriage. She got all those extra years to do those things, her victims did not. We need to find a real, proven way to talk to the victims and find out what they want. That would make all this so much easier. LOL

The most interesting thing about this case is that her guards, all of them, believed she'd truly reformed. This was noted then as unusual. Prison guards don't usually unanimously agree that a death row prisoner should be pardoned. Even I had hoped she'd be spared death. I believed her. I don't usually buy jailhouse conversions.
Also, in another interview on this case, it truly was dreadful that every lawman in that city saw her as inevitably winding up where she did. No one was helping her. No one.

I also think that the argument that if she was a man, there wouldn't be this backlash, so we should just ignore all statements against death, was stupid. Yes, she had sympathy as a woman but that doesn't mean you should ignore actually complaints. Plus, men that have 'reformed' with little backlash against is in my opinion a bad thing!
