I sat in the Battalion Conference room on Kelly Hill at Benning, when 3rd I.D. was still there. The Colonel and the Sgt Major, and the Bn Surgeon opposite me, on the other side of the table. I wanted to advocate for my client a young 11B who had TBI and PTSD and a jacked up right arm. Rather than show any concern about their young Soldier, who they should have sent to Wounded Warrior, the BC opened up with "I lost 6 Soldiers in Iraq. Why should I care about this one?" That is one reason a young Soldier won't re-enlist.

The moment my medical retirement was finally actioned my entire command flipped from being supportive to hating me with a burning passion
    - denying any award for 5 years of service
    - having me work every day for 5 weeks with a broken tailbone (really hard to stand)
    - having me work every day, full time until my last week of the army and scrambled to clear installation in 5 days

I didn't tell anybody. I think I just waited for my out-processing orders to come in. I did hear later that my name came up in a meeting and the Battalion commander asked why "this young Sergeant is leaving and can we convince him to stay?" and he was told I was going to go to college by one of my buddies. He replied "well, that's as good a reason as any" and that was that.

Back in the 80's in Baumholder, Germany, they sent all the NCO's to a seminar at the post theater. Delta Force was there recruiting. We had to sit through 2 hours of their videos showing all the neat stuff they did and a bunch of presentations on enemy weapons and the such. After that, they told us to line up to take a physical fitness test to see if we met their requirements. I raised my hand and asked them why, if we had no want or desire to join them? I got reamed out for 30 minutes in front of everyone on why it was our duty and all real men should beg for a chance like this. I was just some dirt bag e-5 using the Army for my own ends. A total douche bag (his words not mine). After that rant, I informed him, her never answered the question and if I was free to go. He asked why I attended the event. I informed him we were ordered to be there. He told everyone who did not want to be there, they could leave. 95% of the NCO's present stood up to leave. Needless to say, he blew a gasket and ranted and raved as we left. I mean, if Delta had Tanks, then maybe I would of been interested but being a high-class grunt? Nope, not my cup of tea.

I was a prior enlisted Marine and as a Lt once overheard some more senior officers referring to junior enlisted as “summer help”. I was disgusted by that. There may be guys that want to come in for a hitch and pursue other things and that’s fine if they honorably serve their contract. Part of your duty is to send them back better than they came in. I was in at a time when good junior Marines couldn’t re-enlist or had to cross deck to a short MOS due to drawdowns. That was probably first time I actually questioned our Semper Fi motto or our “once a Marine, always a Marine” slogan. Unfortunately for some, those are just words. Probably their same approach to their oath of office.

Was an M249 gunner and hated sitting around "trying" to clean it for 8 hours in the bay after an exercise. Learned how to disassemble it further so it could actually be cleaned. 1SG came in one day and flipped out, rightfully so as I wasn't supposed to disassemble it that far, just standing there screaming while I reassemble it. Alright, learned my lesson, I won't do that ever again. Almost laughed out loud when they offer me armorer school as a re-enlistment bonus. Like, nah, I don't do that anymore, bye.

First unit I deployed with, I went to Iraq. I had the best opinion of the Marine Corps at that time. I had a good command that took care of its Marines and Corpsmen. I get back and volunteered to join the MEU. It was a complete 180 on my view of the Corps. I will sum it up with a conversation I had with my SSgt. when he wanted to convince me to reenlist while in a combat zone with a $32,000 reenlistment bonus offer, he reminded that that unit might have put a bad taste in my mouth but there was always a unit out there worse than the one I was in. I replied that I was afraid to find out what unit that might be.

I was a PJ from 89 to 95, and when I said I wasn't going to re-up, they started by repeatedly telling me how much my training had cost the American tax payer, then there was the poor attempts at bribery, followed by them just being openly hateful towards me. At one point, some actually did say, "Well what are you going to do back in the world anyway?", and when I pointed out that PJs have some of the most marketable skills, I could see the realisation hitting them, and I often wonder if I inspired that person to get out lol.

Maybe if somebody had been this nice to me when I was short, I might have re-upped. Wait, maybe somebody was and that's why I didn't... But I think it was a different Army in the early 80s. I pretty much ETS from Korea so I was out of the unit anyway. Got there as a UH-1 crew chief and they just got Blackhawks. Wasn't even given a chance to work in the hanger on the Cobras so I don't think anybody really gave a crap one way or another what I did. But that was fine with me. I'll always have that bit of pride to say I raised my hand and put on the uniform. Can even say I was in the 7th Cav, but the Army just wasn't for me.

No one was mad at me personally. No one seemed like they wanted me to fail. What is causing this today?
