Hi Nick and Alexia. I am so pleased you enjoyed Elbow. They are my favourite British band of the 21st. Century, influenced greatly by PG era Genesis in their early days, and have developed into a band that has a unique place in British music, no-one sounds quite like them. They come from Bury, just north of Manchester, and worked long and hard (about ten years) before getting a record deal, releasing their first album in 2001. There is an humility and honesty in their music, at times subtle, sometimes extremely powerful, that has created an almost 'cult' following.
Every album is worth checking out, but their 4th. album 'The Seldom Seen Kid' in 2008 won the Mercury prize for album of the year in the UK, and it generated much greater awareness of their music. This was when I first truly got into them, I bought their back catalogue immediately, and I have been on the ride ever since. They are brilliant live, Guy Garvey (vocals/lyrics) is a superb frontman in a self deprecating English style, and his vocals and the band's musicianship create an atmosphere that works brilliantly, both in an intimate theatre setting where they make you feel like an invited guest and at festivals where Guy conducts the audience during their anthemic songs. They are invited every year to Glastonbury, the UK's biggest festival.
Let me know if you listen to their music privately (I wouldn't blame you if you did) as I think an Elbow marathon would be ideal when you next open requests, and I wouldn't want to choose tracks you've already heard. There are so many wonderful Elbow songs to listen to, I'm glad I chose 'The Birds' to begin with xx

I first heard "Magnificent, She Says" by Elbow in a compilation of new song I downloaded about 5 years ago. I really liked it so I listened again... and again... and about 7 times more. By then fallen in love the song and hoped the rest of their material was as good. So I went and bought everything they had at Bandcamp. And I was not disappointed. They are unique and smart and beautiful and Guy Garvey's lyrics are pure poetry. Check out 'Magnificent, She Says" when you get a chance. Just a freekin beautiful song. And Lippy Kids... and My Sad Captains... and One Day Like This... and just everything. haha

I have traveled twice just to see them. Their new album drops in late March 2024. New single Balu has a bass line/tone that makes me smile broadly. Complex song, as always, but immediately accessible. The highest compliment saved for last: They are even better live than on their brilliant recordings.

Elbow, are a brilliant, brilliant band. This track kills. Guy Garvey (the singer/main songwriter) is a big Genesis fan (think you can tell the influence), and his voice is very close to Gabriels. They've also recorded a lot at Peters studio (Real World). Check out the tracks... Newborn, One Day Like This, or Empires.

Elbow are amazing, seen them so many times. They’ve been going since 2000, the first album Asleep in the Back has some of their best songs, Newborn is a great song to introduce yourselves to the band. Guy Garvey is the singer, he has an amazing voice, very much in the Peter Gabriel style. Elbow’s style is very laid back and epic sounding, lots of stuff that’ll bring you to tears 😭

Im from the neighbouring town Bolton, we all love Elbow, Garvey's a national treasure and its so nice to see people as far as America giving them a listen, so many good hits. I recommend more such as Station Approach, New York Morning, Ground for Divorce, One Day Like This, honestly the list goes on.

If you want to hear something more punchy from Elbow, try Grounds For Divorce. If you go with One Day Like This, try to find a live version, possibly one of their Glastonbury sets. They played it as the sun was setting in 2011 with the crowd all singing along at the end and the atmosphere was very special, even watching on tv.

This appeared in my YT recs today and I'm so thrilled it did! So consider me a new sub! Elbow is my very favorite group. The vocalist is Guy Garvey. Thanks so much to the gentleman who requested this! My personal favorite of theirs is "My Very Best" from their album "Leaders of the Free World." The lyrics are just incredible. Everything they do is pure ear candy. "One Day Like This" is probably their best-known track and was a huge hit at Glastonbury last year. But it would take me all night to list all of their songs that are worthy of a reaction. Great stuff. Thanks so much!

Elbow have had an incredible run as one of Britain's best bands, and they write a catchy tune as well as anyone. But my favorite songs of theirs have slight prog touches. Elbow are brilliant - my favourite is the live album at abbey road ‘where the Beatles recorded’ with BBC Symphony orchestra - ravishingly beautiful. This album is more minimalist of which I’m not so much a fan but they are always brilliant. Guy Garvey writer and singer is also a real authority on rock. The live album will give you the best introduction to the band. I also recommend SELDOM SEEN KID which is an incredible album - Starlings is magnificent. Here is Mirrorball from the live with the BBC - if you have a dry eye at the end of u are no longer alive ! Exquisite czcams.com/video/Sq10PhUG9VQ/video.html and this features the wonderful Richard Hawley who is a wonderful singer songwriter famous for COLES CORNER. Other FB pages that talk about Prog rock totally miss the point when I say they should be paying attention to Elbow and Radiohead. They talk about new Prog and then when I hear what they are talking about it just sounds like old Prog. Of course there are music genres. Goth, Punk, Emo, ETC. Bands can still make Punk songs and Grunge songs. But for me Prog as a genre is a problem. Prog originally described "progressive" bands. Bands attempting to sound different and pull in different musical influences. There are modern prog bands like Elbow and Radiohead. They wouldn't call themselves Prog but they are much closer to progressive than new bands that just sound like warmed over YES and Crimson ETC.

This is not rock, blues, jazz...
It may be good, but what is it good for?
    Background music for reading/studying?
