Thank you Nick and Alexia for doing this reaction. I'm really sorry for confusing you first time round Nick, but now I know what to do in future, the song list on an email it will be.
I am so pleased you like Elbow, they really are close to my heart , and I am excited that they will be touring the UK in arenas next May in support of a new album that is due in the New Year. My tickets have already been bought! I'll keep an eye out for their plans for potential US gigs. You have to see them in their element.. LIVE!!
This album would be a great contender for the Patreon full album polls. You have now heard 'The Bones Of You', 'Grounds For Divorce' and 'One Day Like This', but there are still eight more tracks of equal quality to discover. I must start a campaign with the voters! Thank you both so much!
@richarddobson815 thank you for this! Like you, I have a great affection for Elbow. Anytime I see a reaction to Elbow I can't click quickly enough. And I can always be sure the request originated from you. Well-done!
@@allisonreed7682 Thank you Allison. Elbow are such a special band aren't they?
@@richarddobson815 they truly are. And it's always a delight to see and hear others who appreciate them, as well! ❤
You should have warned them to learn the lyrics. Everyone at an Elbow gig sings. Guy encourages it.
Hey Richard I just registered to this Elbow reaction what a great song. Really wonderful I added it to my play list.
Watch the performance live at Glastonbury, 80,000 singing the chorus awesome treat yourselves.
I'm not the group's biggest fan, but this song will stay with me for ever. It was used by the BBC to introduce the daily coverage of the 2012 London Olympics. It was such a wonderful time in this country, when we proved all the doubters wrong, and put on an unforgettable event. The sun shone, and so many people were in a good mood. The lyrics fit perfectly with the sense of joy that so many of us were experiencing.
The BBC commissioned Elbow to compose its opening theme for its 2012 Olympics TV broadcasts (agreed, a miraculous two weeks that seemed to bring the nation together for the first time for some time, and never has it been so since), and One Day Like This - deservedly - got mixed up in with that coverage, having previously been relied on heavily during the Beeb's Beijing 2008 coverage. But how could it not? 😃
Anyway, Elbow's First Steps brings a genuine lump to my throat to this day. Impeccable and perfect for the pure, unadulterated and, frankly, unexpected joy and pride the 2012 Olympics turned out to be for us Brits. I mean, for anyone who didn't experience those Games in the UK, imagine *this* soundtracking your nation's Olympics...! 😍

The whole album, The Seldom seen Kid, is a masterpiece. And if you look online you might be able to find their live performance of this album with the BBC Orchestra. It's the best live performance I've ever seen.
The beauty of this amazing album is that it confounds classification in a specific genre, it's dark, uplifting, melodic, gritty and sweet. Ultimately it's a collection of exceptionally good melodies and fascinating lyrics. Starlings, The Bones of You, grounds for divorce and one day like this are all amazing. In the lengthy era of CDs which overstated their welcome where vinyl limited audio time , elbow didn't add timefilling crap on this album. The performance at Glastonbury of this song was wonderful.
This is by far their biggest hit and well-known song here in the U.K. They close their concerts with this song and get the crowd singing along in different harmonies etc. Elbow have a brilliant connection and interaction with their fans at gigs. Always a joyous time!
One of my "go to" songs when I'm in need of a pick-me-up. So happy to see you two react to it! ❤🎶
THE BEST place to see Elbow play this song is on a warm evening in june. To be more specific: Saturday the 8th of june 2019, Landgraaf the Netherlands. They played this song at the moment the sun was setting. One of the most magical moments of my life. Thousands of people singing the outro vocals. WOW!
Perhaps their best song! Love it. In live it's even more powerful! Love Elbow, got all albums, you lucky have lots to enjoy from them. His voice reminds me Peter Gabriel too.
There is a live show that ELBOW did with a BBC orchestra and a choir at Abbey Road which is transcendent! Guy Garvey singer writer and expert in rock history is married to Rachel Stirling who is Diana Rigg’s daughter. Check out Elbow at the BBC.
It's a fantastic concert. Top notch! They perform the whole of the Seldom Seen Kid album
Best studio live album ever
The best live video of them performing One Day Like This was at Eden Sessions in Cornwall in 2014. For some reason it has been taken offline on CZcams and I've not been able to find it anywhere else. Luckily I got an mp3 copy of the audio and I listen to it at least once a month - it always brings a smile to my face when the crowd just belts out the harmonies after Guy yells "Harmonies!"
Gem of a song. Never heard this song before until I caught a Glastonberry concert on TV and heard Elbow doing this one live. Grabbed me
Just the very tip of a huge iceberg of brilliantly constructed songs they have in their back catalog….one of the uk’s finest
One of my favourite songs of all time. Brings me to tears every time I hear this.
Fun fact - Guy Garvey is married to the daughter of Diana Rigg!
His weekly radio show on BBC 6Music (Guy Garvey’s Finest Hour) is one of the best shows on the station.
Same. I have already told my kids one day when they were listening to this in the car with me, the energy of this song is how you should aim to approach every day.
Yup, and Rachel Stirling's just as much a diamond as her husband. Caught her in a play years ago, in which she played the same role her mother played in the film it was based on (Theatre of Blood). Her resemblance, voice and mannerisms so evoked a young Ms Rigg it was uncanny. 🙂
@@RGRGRGRGRGRGRG she’s great. I love her in the Detectorists. As soon as I saw her for the first time o knew she was related to Dianna Rigg. So much alike.
Both appeared in the show together after the first season!
Found a band, new to me, to explore! Thanks RichardDobson815 and NicknLex. I catch up with NicknLex on Sundays. I put the channel on while I dust or fold clothes. This one had me sitting down to listen. Why does a chorus of human voices make my heart hurt...like beauty pierces right through it?
Thanks for reviewing 'Elbow' a group not only close to my heart but close to where I was born and live. The group are from Bury in Lancashire just 5 miles up the road from my home town of Bolton. I can only describe their sound as rich and warming and the track you played became a massive hit in the UK and a regional and national anthem...Well deserved!
I've never heard anything by Elbow until this great NicknLex channel and they sound really good. Since this song, I've listened to several more songs by them and they all sound great!!
Next you should try " magnificent ( she said) alive on the Graham Norton show and Mirrorball, both are just incredible.
This is a great pop song. I fell in love with it the very first time I heard it. Beautiful string arrangements!
ELBOW are amaaazing. This album is remarkable. You’re right… “The Bones of You” is stunning… and “Mirror Ball” would make a great follow up reaction. Also “The Birds”!!!
Guy Garvey has one of the best voices in rock.
Nick and Alexia reacted to 'The Birds' earlier this year. Check it out, it was the first Elbow track they had heard.
I love Elbow, their musical talent is something else, I was glad to find that they take inspiration from Peter Gabriel and Genesis, as they were major player in developing my musical taste from my teenage years in the 80's. But Elbow's music is just amazing, very melancholic and chilled yet very interesting lyrics too. My introduction to Elbow was when they released Grounds For Divorce and love that song, but my favourite song is one you already covered, Loneliness Of A Tower Crane Driver, (the album version is very good too) but this is another one high up the list. Great work!
Love Elbow. Guy Garvey is so talented. You must give Mirrorball and White Noise White Heat a go. Both excellent tunes
This is another rabbit hole you'll absolutely love diving into.
I was at Glastonbury Festival. The days before it had been a bit wet and wild but on this day the sun had come out, the mud began to dry, the beer, tequila and cider was flowing and I was watching Pulp at the Park Stage doing their surprise set but I left early to walk to the Pyramid Stage to see the end of Elbow's set and to catch this song. The video of it will be on here somewhere. Such a special song and at the Festival its a banger.
Big Elbow fan, great reaction... Guy Garvey sounds really similar to a young Peter Gabriel to my ears. Garvey has said they are very inspired by Genesis, says they're progressive rock without the solos (or something to that effect).
God dammit. How many times can I hear this song and still cry everytime. It's the lyrics and those damn strings. It's just so earnest and sweet.
There is also a gorgeous live at Abbey Road version of Elbow with orchestra and choir.
Never even heard of Elbow, but this is nice. The voice reminds me a bit of Sting’s “style”, and I really like the orchestration!
Been lucky enough to see Elbow a couple of times, and this song always gets the crowd singing along at the top of their voices. Wonderful band. Check out a live version of this at Glastonbury or listen to ‘Great Expectations’ - heartbreaking song. Guy Garvey is a living legend
This a really good 'feel good' song, it just lifts you up and make you want to sing along!
Elbow is so great. Their music is so gorgeous.
Wow. A fave. Yay! I wonder which version...Ah, good. Throw those curtains wide. One day like this a year would see me right. Holy cow I love your eyes. What lovely lyrics!
There is a BBC version worth watching with lots of stars singing along, as I recall. This is on my CZcams playlist of groovy songs of the 21st century. There's quite a lot out there, and the list is a few years old. Anyways, thanks again Richard, Nicholas and Alexandra.
Hahahahhaa always amused at my constant name changes 🤣 Thanks for that! 💗
That is an extremely clever reference! Nicholas and Alexandra were the last of the Romonov dynasty in Russia, until they were executed and replaced by the Bolsheviks. Perhaps that makes Marley their daughter Anastasia!
@@NicknLex It's a service I don't mind providing for my darlings.
@@JKonstage Another beautiful name!
Saw them live in the UK a couple of years ago. Awesome band!
Live with the bbc orchestra is a must listen. Also Guys solo abum song Angelas eyes is great too. But elbow have many many good songs to dive into.
This is my go-to-when-I’m-depressed-and-need-a-boost song
Wow. That was spectacular. First time hearing them.
Elbow are a fantastic band, who luckily,(for us, maybe not them at the time!) stayed under the radar until this album,(their 4th) which meant they built a world of sound of their own, rather than being immediately successful. Their big influences are Talk Talk, Genesis & Peter Gabriel amongst others, which you can hear in their sound. I'd recommend going back to their debut and trying 'Newborn' and 'Red' to get a more raw, unpolished sound, but all their albums are wonderful.
I was just ecstatic to see another Elbow reaction so like both of you, I'm very happy about this "mistake!" And thanks to Richard for making this request! I can't quite articulate with words how much I love this song and love Elbow. The first song I ever heard by Elbow remains my favorite of theirs to this day -- their song "My Very Best" from their 2005 album "Leaders of the Free World." It has the most lush and stunning chord descension, and the lyrics will take your breath away. I've yet to see a reaction to it on any channel at all. I truly hope you'll add it to your rotation one day.
I noticed u both wondering who Guy reminds u of, assuming u are familiar with John Grant, they have collaborated many times.Take of & landing & everything is another great album, New York Morning & My Sad Captains good starters on that & the BBC live performance with full orchaestra & choir at Londons Royal Albert Hall is beautiful.
Used in the Olympic Closing Ceremony 2012
Anthemic
The signature Elbow track 😊😊😊
Very glad the mistake happened! Really cool tune! Great reaction Nick and Lex!❤
Wow, can't believe you've never heard this before. This is a great anthem absolutely brilliant live, the Glastonbury performance of this legendary. Guy Garvey has a wonderful voice, and as a kid was very much influenced by Genesis, I heard an interview with him that his parents constantly used to play A Trick Of The Tail and how influenced he was by it and other Genesis music which he adores.
Great choice, Guy Garvey is a great front for Elbow. Another great talent out of Manchester in UK and his 3 hours of eclectic music each Sunday on BBC 6 Music. Keep up the good work.
Bury actually
Have a dig around and see if you can find the BBC coverage of the live Glastonbury version of this. A true "Glastonbury Moment".
Great band, they ignore expectations and just make good music.
You should try more Elbow- try “ Build a rocket boys”….. spell blindingly good.
Seen the band a dozen times - they are fabulous live
Never heard of this band .. that song is an absolute killer .. Wow.
_Grounds For Divorce_ is a great jukebox tune
I love it!!! Elbow sounds like Dead Can Dance, Moody Blues, and Yes fused to together. Their music is very Cinematic Progressive Classical music. this music is what's lacking in music today!!! I love this band. And I love LOVE Dead Can Dance!!!! Thanks guys for sharing this great music...definitely made my Saturday!!!! lol and a little ELO this group also sounds like...lol....I love this band!!!!
It's not "what is missing in music today" because they are a current band. I sometimes despair about Americans.
I want this played at my wedding 🥹
Major influences on Elbow: Peter Gabriel, Genesis (A Trick of the Tail specifically), Talk Talk, Radiohead, Joni Mitchell... Elbow covered Gabriel's Mercy Street, and P. Gabriel covered Elbow's Mirrorball.
Hi Nick and Alexia, I know you mention the singer from Dead Can Dance, another amazing musical outfit, Brendan Perry is a British singer, ( Lisa Gerrard is from Australia) I got introduced to Dead Can Dance through a unrelated video where they used Children Of the Sun from DCD and I loved it, had to look it up and started listening to more of DCD music. Both Brendan and Lisa are very unique too and it's great to discover new music unexpectedly. Thank you both for your cheerful banter and reactions!
brilliant band from the north west of england
Great song! 😊 I'd first heard it only a couple of years ago, via a nice live cover version done by The Corrs in some radio station's studio 🙂
Now find the live bbc sessions they done it’s superb
Absolutely love Elbow one day like this is one of my all time favourite songs ever !! I've been lucky enough to see them live a number of times and a few times at Glastonbury Festival and being on the Pyramid field with the whole crowd singing that back to them was an all time Glasto moment ! Couple of other songs of theirs that I love that you should give a go are Lippy Kids and Grounds for divorce !
Hi Guys, the band Elbow is one of my nephews favourites, and this song was played at his wedding. Later he bought me the album. What more needs to be said ? Byeee Jim X
Top marks for this!
Elbow, Snow Patrol, Mumford and Sons, Travis, Manic Street Preachers………….so many largely underrated UK Bands with a sound generally in this pocket.
Every British wedding reception since its release
Every
Single
One
Anthemic rock.
Guy Garvey has such a distinctive voice and style. Bury, where the group are from is a region of Greater Manchester and the accent shines through in the bands music. You should, if you get the chance, check out my Sad Captains. Simple yet stunning.
Love this
In some Elbow songs, the singer sounds like Peter Gabriel.
Elbow - powder blue from asleep in the back is a fantastic song to react to
Guys, check out New York Morning by Elbow! That song is really great! I got to know them by it.
Try loneliness of a tower crane driver. Goosebumps all over
It was a fortuitous mistake and we get a great song out of it for Richard.
They have a new album out very shortly
You need to listen to Starlings off the same album
Coldplay meets Peter Gabriel… nice song. It’s different yet familiar.
This is my first vid of yours, I would recommend lippy kids by elbow.
Wowed. Please do"six words" by them. (It's the song I want played at my funeral❤)
Wow, sounds like early Coldplay (when they were good). I love post britpop. Recommend Lemon Tree by Fool's Garden.
Exactly!
Talking about bands with weird names that are great check out Toad The Wet Sproket.
Not familiar with elbow but loved it ! It sounds like a Peter Gabriel song!
How would you describe this..
Manchester National Anthem!
😀
One day like this, would see me right! 🤣
Check out Balu off the new album it’s awesome
Hired?
Elbow is a group of mates who have come up through college and started a band together.
Can you guys react to filipino song, kabilang buhay by bandang lapis on the wish bus because this is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard😢😢
To me he sounds like Rob Dickinson of Catherine Wheel.
Voice reminds me of Peter Gabriel
Sounds a little like Coldplay 👍
You love them but somehow avoided ever listening to their most famous tune.
Away and have a shite.
Sounds like the stuff ELO did 45 years ago, just ok
