I’m using Rift sawn white oak for the table top I’m building. I’m A big fan of quartersawn white oak but for this project I wanted the long tight grain of rift sawn. It’s always nice to visit a lumberyard with a great selection and people who are happy to help. Big thanks to Ed and Ryan for helping me find a few nice boards for the project.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching, Jon.
The Bubinga board at the beginning was tempting but I didn’t take... not enough room in the shop right now.

I love lumber yards, its just hard to find good ones in most places.
In all of my years purchasing lumber (40+), that's the first time I've seen it listed with the manner it was sawn. a great bonus for the buyer IMO. Thanks for the heads up on where the bees will be located now, Jon.
Thanks for all your videos and sharing your knowledge with us. Saw your video a couple years ago at Monteiths and I started going myself about a year ago. Thanks Jon and that's a great place. Also I'm south of Atlantic City and it's worth the drive, when there's no summertime shore traffic.
So cool. Can’t wait to see the round table build!!
That was great to see Jon.
Nice tips. I wish I could find a nice lumber like that around my area.
Great information and video. Real helpful information
Almost fell out of my chair when I figured out that this lumber yard was right here in NJ. Might be less than an hour away from my home!
Great video! 👍🏼 Both interesting and educational. Thanks for this.
I'd love to see you make something with that first board. Babinga. Well, some other time. Thanks again for video!
love this dude, always educating his public...keep it up
Great tip regarding grain matching in white oak using rift sawn vs. quarter sawn lumber. We're so used to thinking about getting the best quarter sawn white oak, that we often forget to consider other saw cuts.
Pretty good materials to work with.
Where I am at - I "get what I get". I felt pretty fortunate to even find Lumber (I am overseas). Until last week, I was using harvested pallet wood. Challenging to say the least. But... with the lumber I can get now... I just built an A-frame with two shelves as a plant stand... and the 1x4s I got were badly twisted, bowed, warped, etc. That too has been a real challenge. If you have the opportunity to select your lumber for a build - I think that is one of the most critical parts. Straight, true and good grain pattern makes the amount of work you have to do so much less. Thanks for sharing. Best to you and yours.
I miss you bee keeping videos
Great video! Camera work, editing awesome.
Should be a great looking table,I love white oak
@JonPeters I found Monteath from your channel a couple years ago and have built a few tables with lumber sourced from them. Stay safe in the woods and keep the rubber side down!
This guy is legit. I wish I worked for someone like this.
I have been using up my recycled wood. I have this tupe of lumber yard in Indianapolis. The problem is I go there get what I want....and then wanting ten more things for other projects. Kid in a candy store. Looking forward to your table.
Lumberyards in my area, HD, Lowes, and a couple of distributors that won't let you pick boards. I'd drive hours for this kind of wood!
The ones near me that serve contractors/home-builders do the same thing, and even have policies about you having to pick off the top (which means, especially for sheet goods, you're going to have a lot of waste). But the ones that cater to woodworkers and carpenters, like Exotic Lumber in Annapolis, and Hearne's in PA, certainly do let us pick. (I live in Maryland, near the coast)
I'm lucky, I have about four or five hardwood yards within reasonable driving distance and one distributor that will let you sort through their piles.
First Cuz!!! That lumber yard is Dope!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
Perfect
I live in the Montreal South Shore and too bad there is not even one lumberyard near. I always envy the access to wood that the US have that we don’t.
I love these "Jon visits a place" videos. I've learned so much about lumber, barn disassembly, and Jersey!
I agree. I don't know what you're making, but the quarter sawn wood is a little too 'busy'. Lots of Home Depot's and Lowe's around here, but not many lumber yards. Good video!!
As with your prior lumberyard visits, Jon, I'm struck by how much more limited those of us are who only have home stores as lumber choices. Small collections - in species and number of boards plus their inferior sheet goods - and not regularly restocked. Even for our small'ish (pop: 50,000) Montana city, the nearby lumberyard was well stocked. In our new Arizona home town, of the same size, it's unfortunately a lumber wasteland. So much so that a business down in Phoenix now sells lumber as a retail product.
That was a mother of all dust collectors.
Did you do a video on this rift white oak panel glue up?
Not much in the way of lumberyards that I've been able to find in the SouthEast (GA/SC). A couple of lumber stores in Atlanta, but 2+ hour drive and closed on weekends, so not convenient at all.
I guess I need to move~! :-)
The one near is not open on the weekends!
I don’t have anything even close to this in my area. We have to drive 3 hours to get even close a selection that’s worth looking at.
👍👍👍
Great video Jon........it might be cool to do a video on JRW Sawdust, and find out where all that sawdust goes??? DD
Good idea Dennis, That would be interesting
I thought the very same thing.
Cool video. What was the name of that lumber yard again? I’m not super far from you (down in MA) and always looking for new lumber yards, as I get up to VT quite a bit.
This is Monteath lumber in New Jersey
Hello its delilah carolan :)
Must be nice to have that around you. There is nothing here within hours of me. I'd love to have that availability. No joke, for me to buy that much in my area would be $1500. It's just not even feasible, who has that kind of money just for some material
Would rift sawn oak make good material for making chairs I need to make 10 chairs for a ten foot long table my wife wanted for our kitchen table is made from maple
Heard about your channel from the Behr rep at our local home depot, and he told me you went to Monteith. I live right down the street and have always been intimidated to go there for better lumber. Thanks for this video--took some of the mystery out of it for me!
Hi Sue, that’s great I’m glad to hear it ...great place and good people. Please let them know how you found out about them, thanks!
😃👍🏻👊🏻
Lumberyard last week.
1) 1x12x10 poplar
61.00 and change.
Seriously? Are lumber yards way more expensive ?
@@tzaylor just giving you the number I haven't priced it at the box stores and I don't even think they have one by 12 Poplar there
@@tzaylor
Funny thing. My lumberyard price for 1x pine is cheaper than box stores and better.
Their 2x is more expensive but, higher quality should you need it.
As far as exotics go I dont know. I started out woodworking to make my own bee boxes and such and it basically turned into finish carpentry added to my painting work. I hardly paint anymore😂😂.
The price of lumber is completely ridiculous like my 74 dollar oil change the other day
@@williamsmith9026 cool, thanks for the informed response. Congrats on the transition to finish work. I'd like to do more of that.
Would you please share the location of the lumber yard? Montys?
Monteath... it’s in old bridge New Jersey
Thank you
What’s the name of this lumber yard? I’m in tinton falls
Monteath lumber and molding
Price?
I think you said HGtv not igtv. For a minute I thought you were on some cable show.
Great Videos Jon... Is there any way that you would be able to talk w/ me, I have a problem w/ a project im involved on and I really respect your opinion when it comes to wood working.
Thank you
Lou
Maybe it’s something I could talk about on my Shop Talk channel.... what are you working on
@@JonPetersArtHome yes Thank you. I have Built your wainscoating design in my Basement and it looks phenomenal. I want to do the same in my bathroom but I don't know how to transition from the shower wall tile to the 1st Panel box,, the Stiles, rail, chair rail, baseboard ect. without seeing a very big transitional lip.
That's nice shoot for who life in far from US, so he saw what would world that hiding.
Where are bee hive plans
$10 per bf for rift sawn and quarter sawn white oak in your place (new jersey)? That's so expensive!! It's about $6.25/bf in Houston TX, at lease before covid-9 time.
35 mins is a big time investment? Closest thing to a lumberyard to me is 3+ hrs away, and it's not that great.
