    Here’s a quick look at the Rikon portable planer with helical cutter head. I’ll set it up and test it out on a piece of Reclaimed White Oak that I got from my friends at the Real Antique Wood Mill. My first impression is that I’m impressed with the finish cut but you can let me know what you think in the comments below. Thanks for watching and be good, Jon
    13 In. Rikon Benchtop planer #25-130H features a six row helical-style cutter head and 26 HSS insert cutters. Each indexable knife insert is precision sharpened on two edges and can be easily changed/rotated if damaged or worn - just loosen, rotate, and re tighten.

    I should have said barely any snipe because I didn’t notice it until it was pointed out to me in the comments at 5:17. When the board is dry you can’t see it or feel it with your hand I’ll post a few close-ups on Instagram later today. Thanks for watching and be good, Jon instagram.com/jonpeters_/

    I have had one for 8 months. First job was using the Rikon 8" Heliptical Joiner then the 13" planer to true up about 100' of 9" x8 ft. White maple to make laminated 6/4 x 12" open stair treads....
    Wicked finish...
    But!.... go slow speed with the hardwood, and no more than 1/16" at a time
    .. also, maken sure you clean off th
    rollers with general spray cleaner or, the wood infeed will stall and drive you crazy!!!... wood sap etc will build up on the rollers....clean often!!.....
    Love the Rikon Brand . I have many pieces.

    I've had mine for a few years now and love it... it's clear from this video I REALLY need to upgrade my dust collection cause my shopvac just is not cutting it... I still have a TON of chips that spill out from the opening of the unit.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 4 lety

      Yes, a dust collector is a must. A shop vac just can't handle the huge amount of chips from a planer, they don't do well for dust collecting in general, you are always clearing out the dust from the filters. I have an old dust collector from Harbor Freight that works extremely well, I have 2 of them but have yet to setup the 2nd one and I've had them for gee probably at least 10 years.

  • @sapelesteve
    @sapelesteve Před 4 lety +1

    Looks like a good planer Jon. As others have noted, you always get some snipe using these planers. A good way to reduce or eliminate snipe is to stagger the pieces and also cutting them longer than needed & then cut to length to get rid of the snipe.................... 👍👍😉😉

    Awesome video!!! I have a question though... I’m new at woodworking as a hobby. I’m interested in getting I guess the new version of this rikon planer, or jet 13in bench top planer, laguna px12, or just go with the one every one seems to like the Dewalt 735... I’m very interested in the laguna or jet mainly. My question is what are the quality level on all these brands except Dewalt or compared to Dewalt are they good quality brands that are not cheaply made? That will last awhile? Or even grizzly for that matter? They have a new 13 inch bench top planer. I have to stay bench top because of my work area size is just my garage. Thank you... love the videos!!!

  • @mikesgarage5066

    Great video as always! On the dust hood, can a hose be mounted on either side and one side just has a cap on it? Was trying to determine from the video but wasn't totally sure.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 4 lety

      That's how the Ridgid planer is I have, there's a cap on one side the other side is open to hookup a dust collection hose, you can move the cap to the other side and turn it around its a reversible cap as the 2 sides of the dust chute are sized for 2" or 4" dust collection hoses.

      I've had this same unit for a number of years... it is rather loud, but not NEARLY as loud as the DeWalt one that so many folks have... the Carbide helical cutters really help keep the volume down. I hope this helps.

    Thanks for the quick review. This model shares many similarities to the King and Magnum Industrial 13" 'helical' head planers. Does the Rikon also come with a cutterhead lock? I've heard that that feature on discontinued Ridgid lunch box planers helped tremendously with snipe (might work best with a single rigid bed that spans the infeed/outfeed ports). Thanks, R

    You said "no snipe" but I think it's clearly visible at 5:17.
    Without a 'follower', don't think it's possible to eliminate snipe with these 'conventional' planers, w or w/o helical heads.

    This may sound crazy, but I get next to zero snipe by actually adjusting my tables to tilt slightly toward the planer, not level or in plane with the planer bed. Mine's a 20+ year old Delta 12 in.

  • @guyfisher2050
    @guyfisher2050 Před 3 lety

    Do the blades have 4 sides to rotate ? Or only 2?

  • @tonyn3123
    @tonyn3123 Před 3 lety +1

    I have had one for about 4 years now. Some comments....It does a good job and I am not totally disappointed, but Rikon designed it to use only two sides of the cutters. They offset the screw hole just enough to not use but two sides of the cutters. Most planers are designed to be rotated and use all four sides. Bummer. Using all four sides is a huge savings. The cutters are NOT cheap. It comes with a HSS set installed. I just purchased a carbide set to hopefully get more life out of the cutters. My benchtop planer and jointer use identical cutters. That's a plus. I have experienced some snipe, but I find mine is minimal if I support the stock as needed to stop the final outfeed roller from applying uneven pressure....by hand. In short, I minimize it by making sure my stock stays flat on the tables and bed as best I can. But then again, snipe is something we just deal with with any planer.
    One feature I do like about the small helical-style cutters (this is not a true helical head) is they don't stop up my dust collector like long knives do. Knives remove long strings that tangle and stop up my collector regularly. It may not stop up yours, but they sure do mine. The chips from the cutters are small and easily handled by my dust collector. It's never stopped up. Even makes pretty nice mulch. I have a shop vac and Onida separator, which I love for a small amateur shop. I also use a 20 gal plastic barrel under the separator. It handles most of my planing jobs without filling to the top and it's easy to empty.
    Another good feature is the preset thicknesses. I have used it and it has kept me from planing too much material away more than once. I also find the settings to be quite accurate. Make a habit to check the setting before beginning any new planing to make sure it is where you want it to stop.
