Ran into a friend one time and he told me a guy gave him a gun for doing some carpenter work, it was a 338 Ultra Mag, and it came with a box of ammo with only two shells fired, I said you know why there is only two fired rounds ? he said why ? I said he shot one and it kicked the chit out of him and he thought maybe he held rifle wrong so he shot a second round which kicked the chit out of him again, he then put the gun away until he found you willing to take it as payment.....lol.....

Being that 300 RUM was introduced in 1999 and 300 Weatherby was introduced in 1944 your 50 year fastest is correct but I'm with everyone agreeing that 300 Weatherby currently is 3rd fastest behind 30-378 Weatherby and 300 RUM.

I shot a ,30-378 once, and I mean once. One shot and I handed that rifle back to its owner. Between the recoil and muzzle blast(it had a brake on it) it was nasty. I really have no idea why anyone in North America would hunt with that thing. Just a macho thing I guess.......

My wife’s favorite gun is the 30-378 in Weatherby Mark V. Weighs a lot but with the break recoil is less than a 308. Can’t shoot without ear protection or you’ll feel it for a while. She’s killed a bison, multiple elk and antelope.

      @kentuckywindage222 Před měsícem +1

Yes, a brake. I bought a 300 RUM right after it came out in Remington 700. I'm really busted up and full of shrapnel so recoil isn'tpleasant but I was younger. The muzzle blast was crazy to watch in the weeds 10 foot out in front after firing. I had shot 300 W.M. but that thing was nasty. I couldn't get it to shoot a tight group. Couple others at the shop I was helping out said it was me, so out to the back country we went. One shot from that guy and he said I wouldn't own that rifle 😅. I ended up bedding it but it just sit in the shelf so I traded it. Kinda wish I still had it but ammo the way it is, a box would empty my wallet.😅

Just got back from a vacation in Montana, Yellowstone West and Bozeman. Naturally we stopped by a few gun shops to talk about popular elk rounds and rifles. Here is a shocker - the classic 7 mm Rem. mag is popular along with the 270 Win. Half the recoil of the 300 Win. mag and other fast 30's. The reasoning is that as long as the trajectory is reasonably flat, it doesn't take much to dispatch elk, so no reason to endure the extra recoil and blast, which can cause a flinch and hurt accuracy. Plus the ammo is harder to find and more expensive. It was also mentioned that some hunters use the 25-06 as an elk, mule deer, and sheep cartridge.

This is absolutely correct. Very shortly after the 300 RUM was introduced I bought one and called Nosler for load data because it wasn't in their current manual yet. The data they gave me for RL 25 (which was also introduced around the same time) was a max load of 96 grains (one full grain over their current max listed load) that gave a bit over 3400 fps. Much, if not most, of the data you will see today for the 300 RUM is very anemic - and it's also developed in 24 inch barrels. I have never seen a 300 RUM with a 24 inch barrel, at least not a Remington 700. The vast majority are 26 inch bbls.

I notice that you use the lead sled, if you attach a heaver scope on that rifle, it puts a bit of pressure on those small pic rail mount screws. Had a rifle (heavy magnum) come in that shot accurate, and then started to not group after being shot off the lead sled.quite a bit. come to find that the scope base plate and screws were deformed from the dead stop recoil off a led sled. drilled and tapped the receiver to larger size mount screws, and properly installed a steel base plate and steel rings, and the rifle shot like a laser ! I hunted everything in Alaska for ten years with an old 300 wby fiber mark. was a fine shooting rifle

I won a 300 weatherby mag in the first gen vanguard model years ago. The price of the ammo got me back into reloading. Still, loading 300wby ammo after loading a batch of 6mm rem made me feel like I was shoveling coal into the brass. 😆

I have a Weatherby Mark V Accumark and Mark V Deluxe, chambered in 300 Weatherby. Still, the Vanguard might be the best gun for the money. Even so, the Mark V action's additional weight helps mitigate recoil, making it more manageable. If you're interested in light recoil and accuracy, loading the 300 Weatherby with H4895 powder can yield results similar to the 308 Winchester, allowing for comfortable shooting during range sessions.
However, if you're looking to hunt elk or other large game, full-power loads in the 300 Weatherby deliver the necessary energy, though with increased recoil. For a casual plinking/hunting load, consider using a starting change of IMR 4350 powder with 150 to 165-grain bullets. This combination provides a balance of power, manageable recoil, and, in most cases, outstanding accuracy.
While the 300 RUM offers slightly higher velocities, it does so with increased recoil and less nostalgia compared to the Weatherby line.

I own a 300 Weatherby Mag, shooting 180 grain Weatherby ammo. I had a 300 Win Mag. It’s a great caliber, but there is no comparison to the Weatherby. My rifle is custom built, but Vanguard is a good rifle for the price. Just put a high end optic on it!!!’ Leopold, Swarovski, Zeiss etc!!!!!!

The 300 RUM im faster and commercially available. The 7.82 Lazeroni had loads faster than the 30-378. The RUM is a lot larget than the 300WBY.

@@lz3572…this thing shot a .43-ish, measured with calipers, right out of the box. Moreover, I was shooting Fed Power Point ammo…off a Walmart shelf.
I have also put Fed Fusion, Winchester XP and Remington (Scirroco) through and have yes shot more the a .750, three shot groups, at 100 yards.
However, that isn’t to say that a particular gun doesn’t like a particular ammo but…this is my first Weatherby that is resulting in me buying again. I have either a .25-06 or a 7mm-08 in my future (Vanguard) as well as a .28 Nosler in the Mark V series in the future.
For me, the gun shoots far better than my ability…which is moderate…I wouldn’t consider myself a professional shooter. However, I have been shooting for the better part of 40 years.

There's a reason that the 300 bee was nicknamed the first ultra mag. It's a tossup between the run and 300 bee on which is faster. I know mine shoots about 3150 with a 24" tube with a 210 gr pill so that's scooting in anyone's book. The Norma and other wildcat-ish loadings really don't count imo. Oh and mine shoots less than .50" groups out of a vanguard.

You should look into Vortex scopes. Not the cheapest, but one of the best I’ve found. For the record, I have a 300 win mag. My 180gr rounds 60ish fps slower than those, but the 150gr are going just under 3300…hornady on those. Federal on the others. Have some 200gr that between 2650 and 2850.

I have a Weatherby 300magnum vanguard series 2 rifle & not only does that thing kick like angry mule but it is very hard to find the ammo for it & when you do find ammo it is EXPENSIVE!! Last time I bought ammo I just went with the 300 WIN mag because that;s all I could find & it is much cheaper. Somebody tried to tell me not to shoot the winmag rounds because the rifle might explode but that is a hot load of b.s. because the winmag produces a lot less pressure, there is no way I would shoot a weatherby 300 round out of a rifle chambered in 300 WINmag though because then you are over pressurizing that barrel. WHO TEE WHO I advise you to wear a thick coat & put a nice rubber boot on the end of that Weatherby 300mag rifle, your shoulder will appreciate it! lol

About twenty five years ago, a friend won a raffle at a wild game dinner. There were a few rifles to choose from (a .257 Roberts among others) and he chose the .300 Weatherby. After finding out how much ammunition would cost him, and realizing how overpowered it would be for whitetail deer, he sold it without ever firing it. A Weatherby advertising pamphlet that he got at the same time had a safari hunter’s story about killing a rhinoceros with the .300 Weatherby. It seems to have enough punch to get the job done, regardless whatever you’re hunting.
Looking forward to further videos of your new bing-bang, Adam. 👍🏼

My problem with all of this is you have to look at useable case capacity, with a Nosler 180 BT a 300 Winchester mag has 80.2 grs of useable case capacity and a Saami max pressure of 64000 psi
300 Weatherby mag is 87.4 gr and 63,817 max pressure
    300 PRC is 94.7 gr and 64,991
The 300 PRC is my pick, Its a redesigned modern 30 Cal mag. that doesn't seat the bullet down in the powder column like the old designs, This data all came from as Quick Loads program and it shows that the 300 Prc will shot the 180 gr Nosler BT bullet 30 FPS faster than the 300 Weatherby simply because it holds more powder and has a higher max pressure.
