    Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

That's a stunningly beautiful single-shot rifle chambered in my favorite caliber, *7 × 57mm Mauser.*
The most accurate rifle that I have ever owned was a sporterized, Model 1895, 7 × 57mm Chilean Mauser that was once the personal firearm of a Vietnam War veteran Special Forces sniper. He was a Mormon from Salt Lake City and the rifle was his father's work, who was a world class gunsmith.
The rifle came with a military ammo can full to the brim containing 26 separate handloads that his father had developed, along with a small spiral bound notebook containing all of the pertinent load data. I purchased it in 1978 when I was in the military at Ft. Lewis, Washington for $150.00. That rifle was capable of sub-M.O.A. accuracy with all 26 handloads, with the worst measuring just under 3/4" at 100 yards for 5 shots.
Unfortunately, I subsequently sold that rifle but it remains in the top of my list of the five best firearms that I have ever owned.

Gorgeous. I have a Ruger #1 in 7 x 57 Mauser with a full Mannlicher style stock. It’s the ‘poor man’s’ version of what you have there. The bone case hardening is so beautiful. A nice Swarovski or Zeiss, maybe Nightforce scope would be a great accoutrement. You have indeed a very special rifle.
Mind you, just be careful, 7mm Mauser might be a bit light for an Eland bull.
Thanks for sharing this magic moment with us. My late wife was also as kind and generous as your beloved.

What a strikingly beautiful piece of wood - anyone would be proud to have a work of art like that rifle. I have a Ruger #1 with an exceptional piece of wood - not like THAT, but still beautiful, chambered in .25.06 - and I swear I'd almost rather look at it than shoot it. For those who appreciate what an exceptional piece of walnut transforms into when an oil or other finish sinks deeply into that grain, it can't help but put a smile on your face. Congratulations on the latest addition to your art collection.

Beautiful rifle in a perfect caliber. I love single shots. I've owned 8, 11 if I can count pistols. There's just something about their slender, simple, elegance. The very short action which easily allows 2 to 4" longer barrels is another plus. I wouldn't select a SS for hunting Brown bear in cover, but for anything that doesn't bite, they are great to carry & can be reloaded surprisingly quickly.with practice. A properly stocked one, with the scope properly positioned & mounted will come to the shoulder as quickly as a shotgun. Do you have other single shots that you hunt with?

That is an exceptionally nice rifle. Something I noticed that I do not believe has been mentioned: One the right side, there is a curved dark line in the grain of the fore end that is stopped where the wood meets the action. Another dark line is present where the butt stock meets the action. It is as if the dark line in the grain flows from the fore end to the butt stock. I don't know if this was done on purpose, but to me it is an exceptionally cool effect that adds to the beauty of the rifle.

He always praised the craftsmanship and attention to detail of these rifles. He has since passed, and I have tried to gather as much information on the company and the rifle I own. I have spoken with their team for many inquiries now and they could not be more helpful. I would love to see the intricacies of their process and the people who make these works of art a reality.

I remember my first shotgun. My grandpa got if for me as a confirmation present. The story of how he came to own it along with 23 shells from the initial box that the guy bought when he bought the shotgun was worth more that the gun was worth when he gave it to me. He traded a case of beer for the gun and ammo, then he sat down and helped the former owner polish off the case of beer. That gun is now semi retired and only shot ever other year or so.

Old school dude here. Beautiful craftsman ship. Love the caliber, the wood, custom touches. Even Jack O'Connor would be impressed. But your expression was the best. Just like a kid on Christmas day! Thank you!

Ron sounds like a kid who received his Christmas present on Christmas morning. Just like he mentioned, he sounds exactly like that, a kid who received his dream present.
