    >Watches Lucky Star as 11-13 year old and finds it hilarious without knowing what any of the jokes mean, cries at the idea of the girls never seeing each other again.
    >Rewatches Lucky Star as 20 year old and finds it not that great even though I finally understand what the jokes mean, doesn't cry at all.

    Just wanted to say, Digi, thank you for not just focusing on what is happening in the current season, or is coming up. Due to your videos, I have just binged, within the past two weeks, on K-on!, Toradora, and Sakurasou no Pet an Kanojo. All great shows I never would have even thought about watching before I'd seen your videos. Thanks, man.

      I love digi for praising k-on so much. Before his loving thesis, the only reviews of k-on on youtube were pointless videos about how k-on has no plot, like gigguk's, who made no effort at all to understand the show.
      Toradora and Sakurasou are shows that I kind of hate though, and I don't even remember about he ever talking about sakurasou.

    • @12kidder1
      @12kidder1 Před 7 lety +3

      Leonardo Fernandes He had mentioned Sakurasou in an analysis about what makes an effective romance anime. I mostly watched it because it was an anime that really showed accurately the effects of moderate autism and savants.

    • @paulocone1963
      @paulocone1963 Před 7 lety +2

      I really like Sakurasou because it really understands what it's like to be a young artist with no real direction, but at the same time the fanservice is kinda bad. (I haven't finished it though, so my thoughts may change once I do.)

    • @MJCKCA
      @MJCKCA Před 7 lety +5

      I really enjoyed Sakurasou for the struggle of being surrounded by talented people and being shit at what you do, and how you have to deal with that if you want to improve and even keep the friendships you have (even though the main character deals with this very poorly)

  • @edsongaleana4002

    I completely relate to that fear of rewatching an old anime that meant so much to me in the past, I prefer to keep that feeling that I had the first time I watched it intact even if the series wasn't really that good, that's why I usually just see every anime once, but I understand that's not easy when you're a reviewer.
    I hope you keep this cast, I would love to hear your thoughts and feelings on other old animes and how they had an impact in your life, I really enjoyed this one, keep it up Digi.

    I loved this thing. It felt like all the parts i love about you in one video.
    I love afterdark because i find you as a person really interesting to follow, and how you think and express yourself and live your life is really entertaining and thoughtprovoking.
    I love your main channel because you think about anime in a really different way. Not that your opinions are all that obscure or off the mainstream, but you always come at it from your own direction. I tend to also have my own angle to things, and find you refreshing there.
    And i like your droning selfanalysis in your decompression stuff or the more mellow afterdark videos. Because i also think way too analytically about myself alot. And i find you doing to really touch something in me.
    And this video was all of those things in one. This is my favourite content idea from you so far. Keep up the good work.
    Though still... Nothing will ever beat the Bathos rant!

  • @blocking94
    @blocking94 Před 7 lety +2

    Your little story about you relating to the character made me think about how I'm doing at the moment. I went to college and studied hard for a diploma in a field I do enjoy, but when I got into the industry I found myself really underwhelmed with it all. Eventually I ended up falling out with management over how things were being run and handled, and I was laid off.
    Now I'm back to square one, working on a bar again for half the wage I was on before. And you know what? I'm happy. I enjoy being a bar man. I also love IT networking and computer systems, but I just don't feel happy doing it. It took me a while to realise and come to terms with the fact that sometimes, simple things make you really happy. And sometimes that's all you need.
    Good video man.

    *Being happy with whatever you do does not equal not having a stable job.*
    Taking in your words, I think Manabi didn't choose to be a freeter just for the thrill of not having a stable job, but rather prioritizing her happiness above her job; which by what we're hearing for the last couple of years, something that you've been doing too.
    I don't think re-watching Manabi would crush you. It would crush your nostalgia, but *you have achieved what Manabi set out to do.*

    maybe i should wait until the video is over, but holy shit you talking about your high school situation just made me completely stop what i was doing and stare at the video in complete silence.
    because i'm in the EXACT situation you were in. i fucking hate school. i'm at this upper-level "smart kid" school and i'm barely hanging on, and i'm absolutely fucking miserable. i don't want to go to school. i don't want to go to college. my teachers give me shit all the time about how i'm "too smart to be making grades like this" or "not trying hard enough". dropping out or not going to college is absolutely not an option for me--i'm from a family of intellectuals who would probably disown me for being the shitty lazy daughter.
    fuck man, i don't even know where i was going with this. but it's nice to see i'm not alone in this situation.
    EDIT: thanks for all the kind responses, you guys don't know how much it means to me... i was actually pretty worried about commenting this because i know how shitty youtube comment sections can be but i'm glad i did. thank you all

      College is different from high school so you might enjoy it more. It's actually because of this, I noticed that people who enjoyed high school tend to hate college and vice versa. Also, you're more likely to make long-lasting friends because you're more likely to find people just like you. I was basically Connie from Steven Universe growing up, a nerdy kid with no friends and over-protective parents; however, I made more friends in college than I made in my entire life. College isn't perfect, of course, but I definitely am glad I went at least. I hope this gives you hope.

    I think the ones that can get the most from Manabi Straight is those who have joined a club or work together with someone to organise something at school. The situations described by the show is so real and so relatable, the conflicts, the struggle, the relationship. I don't know about the west but in the east, at least in my city, schools or even university have a tendency to discourage students organizing events. Just stay normal and don't do things outside what a student should is the undoubtable law of the school. It is quite depressing sometimes. It feels like moving an unmovable wall and talking to a stone.
    After I watched this show, it really describes to me about what 'youth' is, which many of high school anime want to do. I don't know why but the inspiration and lesson i got from this show feels similar to Tatami Galaxy (which i still don't fully understand). It is a really good show that makes me rethink my school life and my future.

    please make more video's of this style it was so emotionally gripping even though I hadn't even heard of manabi straight I would love more video's about the impact a show had on you not focusing on how good it was but why you care or cared what about it made an impact I related so much to this vid as I till not long ago planned to go to college but have slowly come to terms with why I think that would be bad for my future and a waste of time and money and decided a future that I think would make me the happiest but wouldn't be stable at all anyway got sidetracked but I will say this format of video is one of if not the most emotionally visceral way of talking about anime I have seen(and I have seen alot) heightened to the max by my investment in you, hell it made me tear up a bit
    (mind you digi I would recommend you put this on after dark not the main channel as this is long and not overly edited along with alot hinging on being invested in you not the anime)

    Manabi's mindset is what I've been trying to learn how to be for maybe the past few months now? I am in 11th grade atm and I'm also taking a lot of AP/college stuff and not putting in effort and "oh you're so smart you're wasting your life" etc. Depressed for the past three years as well, pretty shitty family situation.
    Now, my grades are stable but the mindset I see and the anxiety I see a lot around me in my classmates and what I saw in myself was disgusting. Pinning all your hopes and happiness on a job or grades is so scary, and I see it EVERYWHERE. I've been trying to learn how to be happy with my life w/o needing any of these abstract external factors like school and stuff man. I've been working on making friends, being a helpful and good person just reading and studying how to simply be content with being alive and stuff y'know? Yeah.

I have this fear that it's going to be like looking at a drawing you were proud of a few years ago but then you take one look at it and realize that it sucks. Not because I like seeing people I like and care about suffer, but because your reaction remind me of when I watched The Perks of Being a Wallflower. (I have read the book, btw. Movie > book.) Please continue doing this. It was interesting to listen to you Digi and what you're take was on older anime and why at that point of you're life. I myself thinks that some anime, manga or any media out there should be left alone in the past, not always but sometimes.
    Back in 1996 I started to watch Rurouni Kenshin and the kyoto arc gave me an insight how good character development is made. But just that arc, the rest of Rurouni Kenshin I remember very small fragments from. But I will always be greatfull for just that arc that showed me how characters can be done and how not everything is black and white. Will I return to see it someday, maybe, but I don't think I will hold the whole anime in such high regard as I did back then when I did not know any better. At least not the whole part.
    Anyway, thanks for a nice video Digi!

    I really like the idea of this series, there's a ton of pretty decent to absolutely excellent anime and manga that have just sort of been lost to the void in terms of collective disscusion online that would really benefit from an influx of attention.
    I remember reading a blog post of yours where you said at one point Gash Bell was a series that was close to your heart, i'd love to see one of these about it; it's one of the best battle shonen around that's gotten fucked over due to people only remembering the bad localization of the already bad anime adaption.

I've been watching your videos for years that have been pushing me to work on my writing and critical thinking, especially in regards to things I care about. So this video managed to convey to me what the appeal of these kinds of shows are way way better than any of your other videos have. I would very much like more stuff like this that gets to the core of what this shit means to you 'cause to me the vast majority of anime is just something I just don't get the appeal of, but then there are notable exceptions where I'm like "this is the best shit ever where can I get more of that", and I really feel like it's just impossible to ask for recommendations because nobody who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of anime gets my taste. So the next best thing is to watch digibro videos all day and have him explain the appeal of all these fucking random shows to me so I can decide for myself if that's gonna be my thing or not. And if not, I can at least understand what it does that makes other people really dig it.
    I probably won't ever look at this show, but I'd very much appreciate you talking about more stuff in this manner so I can find that potential diamond in the rough. That said, I'd also be super into a 40 minute long ramble about Texhnolyze because that show is criminally fucking undiscussed and I'd like to see more analysis out there on it, as much as I am a fan of your video on it from a few years back.

    Videos like these should definitely be out there.
    Things which may not be relevant to you now, or to other people your age, might be VERY relevant for younger people.
    Since those shows no longer air, the chances are slim that young people will stumble upon these shows which could change their lives.
    So it takes "veterans" to educate the younglings about these shows and hopefully show them a path into the light.

    I do think you should go back and watch the shows where you're concerned about how you would react to them now after the time that's elapsed. Not necessarily before you write your videos about them, but still something you should definitely do. Learning that you think differently now doesn't erase the original experience; it just shows that you've changed since then. Whether the change is something you're proud of or not, you should still face it head on.

    This will probably get buried under Digimemes, but after hearing Digi's school incident I need to get some off my chest
    [Some Spoilers for Clannad, Angel Beats and Lovely Complex]
    I was in second year of college (but mentally still a fresher), when I watched *Clannad*. I had a deep attachment to this girl in school (not really "romantic") that when school was ending, I couldn't sleep for a night thinking how could I move on with my life without her. So, I tried to do a special goodbye, but she took it the wrong way(because I fucked up), and blocked me from most social media, and never talked to me. I always wanted to try to contact and talk to her, but... This left a _'hollowness'_ inside me. *A sensation that I wish school never ended*
    What hit me in the gut when *Clannad* was ending was Tomoya about to graduate, and had to idea what to do with his life, and that _'hollowness'_ came creeping back. But what hit me in the nuts was the Tomoya X Tomoyo side story, because both of those don't mind doing odd jobs, as long as they had the company of each other. I couldn't stop sobbing after that episode.
    I'm very conflicted about *Angel Beats*, but the scene where the groups starts graduating and 'leaving', again brought back that _'hollowness'_.
    Then I watched *Lovely Complex*. The ending is weak and rather abrupt, but I had grown to like that cast so much, esp. Risa (my fav. female SOL anime protag), that I felt like my real friends were leaving me, and the pangs of the _'hollowness'_ crept back in.
    Hey Digi, If you read this, *I appreciate you sharing your personal stories with your animes*, because you many not realize but a lot of people have gone through (and have felt through) similar circumstances.

    I really love the videos where you really speak about how personally a show spoke to you, like your K-On vids and the Girlish Number vid, so a podcast series where you reflect on a bunch of shows that really meant something to you at a particular time in your life is really interesting and cathartic to listen to. Perhaps it would be worth continuing to release podcasts like this past the thirteen you've already recorded. I'd definitely listen to them.
    Also, I don't know if you listen to it, but conceptually this podcast series reminds me of Dawn/Usamimi's ReView episodes of her Anime Nostalgia Podcast, in which she goes back and rewatches an old anime she hasn't seen in a long time after reflecting upon her initial impressions of it and what it meant to her at the time. Were her podcasts perhaps an inspiration for these podcasts?
