    Huh, I feel a little guilty now. I hadn't realised it but a part of me was assuming unconsciously that most men watch moe shows out of sexual interest or some sort of (non-malicious) male-ego stroking against non-threatning depictions of young, inexperienced and available women.
    Except I watch the same shows because I like cute things and also they tend to be very chilled out. I mean it's really obvious when you type it out but without realising it I'd built up scepticism over the idea that guys can just find things cute and relaxing for the same reasons I would.

    As a kid moe annoyed me but now I can definitely say I like it now. Watching slice of life and magical girl anime helped that bias of moe and cute things being a bad thing. I went from hating shows like Lucky Star to enjoying the hell out of Kobyashi-san no Chi Maid Dragon. Also, been meaning to get to Futago and Kiruminzoo soon along with random Jewelpet anime.

    • @WalkingGirlKoi
      @WalkingGirlKoi Před 7 lety +5

      "Moe destroyed mecha" more like super robot anime are extremely niche (Gurren Lagann has to be most accesible one for non-mecha fans) and real robot that usually keep continuing is Gundam, but alright. And to me that sucks because a lot of old mecha shows seem real cool like Mazinger Z or GaoGaiGar.

    i had a really similar experience as a kid where i wanted to hate everything girly even though im a woman who's also a lesbian so really that was dumb on my part. that said, i was totally into the girly anime scene. i loved lucky star and k-on from the get go. i think that there was a disconnect for me where i just didn't think of anime as being capable of being girly. it's really weird to think about honestly

  • @iamsaztak
    @iamsaztak Před 7 lety +3

    CHEMISTRY! YES! interpersonal dynamics, shipping, all that. it's the core of 'fangirl' shipping/fandom culture. it's one of my FAVORITE parts of a show. it really brings the characters to life, and we love to see 'smooth' friendships. it feels like being part of a great group of friends, and it's incredibly interesting thinking about the character dynamics. And we can learn a LOT about our own relationships by studying character dynamics in stories.
    i fell in love with the 2012 tmnt series because of that. it's kinda...meh written, but gosh is it so fun watching them interact. it works incredibly well, especially in the first season. and a'course that's the heart of tmnt.

  • @iamsaztak
    @iamsaztak Před 7 lety +8

    there's just something so endearing about how guys feel insecure about liking anime. i mean, i can understand, it's seems so girly, but at the same time, it's SUPER focused on cute girls doing cute things. how the hell can guys NOT like that? isn't that the manliest thing you can do? roflmao
    i sympathize with them too though, as much as it makes me smile. because guys get so much pressure to maintain 'the proper masculine image'. I wish it wasn't seen as 'girly' to like anime. not because it's necessarily bad to be 'girly', but because it feeds shame in guys. even though most of it is aimed at them to some degree LOL
    also it's fun hearing about people's embarrassing younger years. teenagers, I think, don't realize how much they can learn about 'being a teenager' by listening to how people talk about being a teenager after they grew up. there are similarities, and an older person being honest about it (and not preachy/domineering), it can help them understand that it's just a part of the process. i feel like teenagers today are REALLY struggling with that, with all the drama of social media and the sjw culture fueling unhealthy perspectives on life. but at least there's lots of other places for teens to find.

Thou in my case it was more absurd comedies like Everday lives of High School Boy, Nichijo, FMP Furmofroo, and Baka and Test. Thou in terms of cute girl shows that would probably be Lucky Star (since it overlayed with my comedic taste).

    I think it's just something that girls and boys go through around 8-13ish. as kids have grown enough to start thinking about their identities, they focus more on forming 'man' or 'woman' as an identity, which means getting kinda tribal. i never went through it, I always actually preferred male characters even though I'm a girl.

    Just finished Love Live myself. My story is similar to yours, but opposite in many ways. I used to get noxious when exposed to excessive levels of cute. But I grew up surrounded by estrogen, so instead of "manly" I settled on Grim Dark.
    Now, after accepting my love of cheese and joy my favorite anime include Clannad and Lucky Star. I'm also writing a book where my favorite PoV is the one with a Moe vibe.

  • @jeromefournier9667
    @jeromefournier9667 Před 7 lety

    It's weird i don't think I ever really had that phase of either "ick girls" or "HAW YEAH MANLY!" I think it's because during most of my youth manliness and things linked to it were mostly "the enemy" in the form of the "school jock" now I don't really know what my schools jocks were like of duty, but in school they managed to square themselves into a rich tapestry of sporty asshole stereotypes.
    I think it's also why I got into anime, in anime you generally just get the one jock type and the other guys are other archetypes, while in western stuff at the time, you got mostly meat heads a small amount other stuff.

    I still agree with your younger self about K-on and it never got to more than a strong 8 for me with similar reasoning. Hidamari Sketch on the other hand is like medicine, just take it in small doses like 1 episode before you sleep and it will better your life. If you rush through it you will just miss part of the strength and point of the show, but on the other hand Hidamari Sketch will never be a show that will be bad, because it is so unique and relaxing.

    the more compitent moe high school anime really do have this feel of just a writer playing a game with character traits and seeing fun ways they can bounce off each other. I can see how yuyuyuri might feel formulaic at first blush but i saw it kinda similar to playing with tropey patterns, kinda like what makes the repetitive nature of phineas and ferb interesting. seeing how the pattern itself can play out in fun little quirks and tweaks.

But it's still different from Azumanga Daioh in that what they do is more random, where K-on characters specifically do things that are endearing to adults.

    Dear Digibro
    If the impression of Galaxy Angel you have is from the anime... please.... PLEASE I implore you... to do what you can to find the visual novels by Broccoli, and please talk about it. It was only a year ago that I got into the series, credit to the already obscure anime for casting a shadow over it.
    Also in defense of the anime, I think Galaxy Angel is pretty great because of its setting being able to open a lot of range in the humor it can tackle, much like how people credit the genius of Samurai Jack's Future-Past setting.
    The games, on the other hand, are serious and wholesome dating sims, and were the original and true vision the series was meant to take. The girls are a lot more level in personality to the point that you can actually empathize with them. Even better, it's not a harem, it's a route based game where you choose to date one of them..... Oh and Mint's ears actually serve a purpose other than being cute. Also no Normad. Fuck Normad.

    • @ShouAmaterasu
      @ShouAmaterasu Před 7 lety

      I know I keep bringing this up on several of your videos, but please.. Galaxy Angel's true vision needs new life, and as much as I like posting the cutscenes in a wide-screen format along with bgm and story highlights, I can't do this on my own.
      We need a guy who has the kind of opinions necessary to judge this series for the early 2000's hidden beauty that it is (or that's how I see it, but I believe it has aged well if I can love it so much now).

      I miss GA it was one of my first anime and it's been years since I last watched it. The show is kinda dumb now that I grew older but it still gives me a lot of chuckles.

      @ShouAmaterasu Před 7 lety

      Yeah, the anime is pretty dumb, but it's also pretty nostalgic. To me, Galaxy Angel was an anime that felt like a Western Cartoon at some instances thanks to its setting, slap-stick humor, and being made in a time where that distinct moe look wasn't exactly the most sought out thing in the industry. The animation has this early Poke'mon vibe to it.

      Look, if Tumblr throws a tantrum seeing Jack and Ashi in a relationship, a good adaptation of the Galaxy Angel games (or just outright reboot the games and make them available on Steam) will literally bring salty rivers into the deserts they inhabit (pun totally intended).
      Good
      Delicious
      Salty Tears
      For my Lilliputian Queen, Mint Blancmanche, to sip in a funny straw while eating jelly beans. You have to strike the pressure points, and good heterosexual romance is a pretty damn tempting one to press now (actually thinking about the original source of the pressure point line.. the use of it to give SJWs hell is actually incredibly ironic).

And I quit soccer so I could watch more shows on Saturday. I didn't even think about what my parents thought lol. I wonder what they did now.

    My question is, where is the variety in anime nowadays? Everything just feels the same.
    And things that do try to shake things up always end up massively flawed to the point its unenjoyable. Or maybe they didn't try to shake things up enough like it was suppose to.
    Basically I want all types of genres to be present in anime instead of a couple dominating each and every season.

    moe is just a preference so you shouldn'the care to defend these this things because is just a preference. It's not like good writing and themes. You watch it to have fun which is totally fine. But I think you need to be more self aware and distinguish the fun shows and the great shows (which have a plot for a reason)

    I remember hating Cute Girls doing Cute Things with a fiery passion. I tried out K-ON and hated it and that soured me on the whole concept. I'm not really opposed to moe. I'll watch a show that takes my interest but CGCT is almost always an instant no. I kinda do remember heralding K-ON as cancer infecting anime. (Still hate it) I don't blame Moe for killing Mecha. (My favorite genre) But shows hanging hard on the cuteness of their characters bore me. I need plot, I need serialization or surreal comedy to keep me invested.

  • @cesarjosedurangarcia3842

    just before watching this video i finished downloading every single chapter of hidamari sketch (4 seasons+specials+extras) 60 videos in total, i haven't watched a single episode so i don't even know if i will like it, and the main reason i'm gonna watch it is because you have mentioned many times how much you like it.
    then you say you haven't even finished season 3? WTF? and you don't have time to watch them? i work 40+ hours a week in a drugstore and i still have time to watch a lot of anime, your job IS to watch anime and talk about it you have watched to completion shows that you Hate like asterisk war, and SAO but you don't watch the ones you like?
    if someone came to you saying k-on is the worst show ever made and you are wrong for liking it, but he also says he didn't watch the second season you would probably think "dont talk shit about k-on if you haven't watched the whole thing"
    if someone came to you saying sword art online is the best show ever made and you are wrong for hating it, but he also says he only watched half of it you would probably think "dont defend SAO if you haven't watched the whole thing"
    everytime you praise or talk shit about a show that you haven't finished your words feel empty to me no matter how well written they are, and don't get me wrong, i follow you and watch all of your content and collaborations, but i feel disappointed everytime you recommend a show that you didn't finish
