Maybe I was just too young, but I don't remember there being any uproar about Samuel L. Jackson playing Mace Windu. He was a good actor, hired to play a part. Now it's a matter of, 'you MUST have actors that tick ALL the demographic boxes or you're racist'.
As MANY people will point out, the problem with Rey (for example) isn't that the lead character is female, it's that she doesn't grow much. She starts powerful, and goes through no discernable training before having massive power. But there are so many fantastic femal characters in "Legends" that they could have made a movie about, and had real stories about them, or at least shown Rey struggling...
Instead of having a good STORY first, the priority seems to have been- Powerful Woman!!
