How StockX Built A Billion Dollar Sneaker Resale Empire

  • StockX is an online marketplace for luxury sneakers, handbags and apparel like Retro Jordans, a Hermes Birkin Himalayan crocodile bag in matte, or a Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch. You can even find extremely rare Pokemon cards like a Charizard-Holo 1999 base set 1st edition. In November 2018, StockX sold its most expensive item ever: a 70,000-dollar Louis Vuitton x Supreme Malle Courier Trunk. By June of 2019, the Detroit-based company reportedly reached a $1 billion valuation. In half a decade, StockX went from a simple price guide for sneakers to a reselling empire and it has its sights on disrupting the retail market.
    Before co-founding StockX, Josh Luber ran three tech startups and joined the corporate world as a consultant at IBM in 2010. Luber was a sneaker head, but “almost intentionally avoided creating any businesses that had to do anything with sneakers.” While researching data at IBM, Luber realized eBay was the biggest marketplace for sneaker reselling, but with multiple sellers listing different prices for the same product.
    Luber figured that the sneaker reselling market would benefit from following an exchange model. This system would help alleviate uncertainty and mean that every sneaker listed on the exchange has one true market value. In 2012, Luber started a side project called Campless, which scraped data from eBay resellers to look at prices for all sneakers sold on the platform via auction. This essentially created a shoe reselling price guide for sneakerheads.

But they said, no account/payment information tied to user names were compromised. What's funny is that this happens all the time with almost every other thing online, phone companies get hacked, banks, credit score companies. Your data is already out there.

      Your comment doesn’t prove her wrong, though. The origin of the term “dead stock” is rooted in exactly what she mentioned: shoes that were never sold to customers and kept in either back rooms or basements. Check out the Complex Sneakers Podcast episode with DJ Clark Kent to hear his very similar explanation of this term.

    The sneaker resale market is something that I’ve been seeing more and more about (because I just bought a pair of Jordan 1’s).
    Applying their stock market framework (bids and asks) was not only good marketing and style, but it does create a de facto market value for the shoes. Even if some sneakerheads don’t like stockx, most of them now refer to the stockx price as the going rate of that shoe. Really cool way to improve the resale market of sneakers - or anything.

      Ross Campoli - Leadership & Business Videos the problem is that it’s unregulated, and that none of the buyer/seller base have enough research or data to trend against for a long enough period of time to make any sort of forecasting or predictions like you would on the actual stock market. Instead, everything is predicated by hype and hype alone. This is where the quants are missing, and with that, any real shot of being taken seriously as anything more than a place where predatory resellers capitalize on those who missed out on bigger releases because they don’t have bots.
      Also, Stock X is a garbage business that has been breached MULTIPLE TIMES and still doesn’t go to great lengths to protect its customers. You’re telling me a company worth billions of dollars can’t figure out 2FA for its customers????

If this guys future is realized. instead of paying the suggested retail price of 150 dollars for some travis Scott Jordan 1s, you would be paying the true retail/ market value price of 1.500 dollars. I never thought that sneakers may one day become a Luxury item only for the rich. So yes, only the rich who can afford to overpay for an average product will be able to buy certain shoes. That's how "the culture" has always been, the haves and the have nots. Been using StockX for some time and while I like the platform, I have concerns. They have some serious privacy issues, selling fakes, data tracking issues, and transparency issues.
    Not too long ago, everybody's data was compromised. What was wrong with that was they took DAYS to notify everyone even though we all knew what was going on. And they didn't really say what they're going to do about it. When you look at how they verify sneakers, some of them take less than a minute authenticating them which is concerning. And that leads to fakes.
    2nd, I look at the sales chart on the app and website which gives you the price and date of the transactions, it isn't accurate most of the time. How could I have the lowest ask at the time but then a sneaker gets sold for more than my ask? Also, it's supposed to be in chronological order so why am I seeing today's date then Nov 1, 2019 then today's date again? Makes no sense.

I took pictures of the box and made a video when I packaged it and dropped it off to UPS. They sent a letter back saying they would honor the original price. Scammers.

    • @gilbertoflores7397
      @gilbertoflores7397 Před 4 lety

      The shoes aren't used. They're new. And when supply cant meet demand, the price for that said item increases. It's a very basic concept to understand, and market does set the price. Speculators can ask 700 for a product, but if no one buys them for that price, then they're not a 700 dollar product, someone will offer say 400, and if enough people are willing to pay 400, then the "value" is 400. That's the way things work. Do you think any product we use cost to make what you probably paid for it? No.
