The author of this story is japan's biggest baldur's gate fan, which explains a lot. She has published tons of books just showing off her character designs for potential DnD characters.
That's amazing! I'll have to do some research after season 1! I'm considering doing manga chapter analysis for the different anime series I'm doing as well. And I always think it's important to learn more about the creator to see those influences in their life reflected in their work.
Better not start too many of them then. 🤣
To add to that, she was a baldurs gate fan long before Baldurs Gate 3 was announced. Planescape too.

That's actually very encouraging to hear! I agree, I'm very impressed with the voice performances in this dub! I'll he curious to hear the original Japanese after I finish season 1!
As other people have pointed out, the setting is based more on tabletop roleplaying than MMOs. But either way, it's heavily influenced by games, but in a good way. The characters never talk about stuff like levels, skills or other game mechanics.
I would almost buy into this if Marcille hadn't called the party "noobs" running from the mushroom monster she bopped in one hit in episode 1.
Really, the reason I tended to skew from tabletop to MMOs is the prevalence of other parties, and how the first part of the dungeon was turned into a social hub of sorts where other parties can be seen.
I think ultimately I arrived less about the type of game, but more that the world seems to be built on "game or video game logic."
Either way, I'm enjoying it immensely for what it is!
@@Noxiddar That was another change by the dub. She called them beginners, but didn't use a game like term like newbs in the original. And other adventurers existing isn't uncommon in typical tabletop settings either. But I guess for me the biggest thing is that they never talk in game terms.

Your observation about "Delicious in Dungeon" being similar to "Dungeons and Dragons" extends to the Spanish localization's title "Tragones y Mazmorras", which is directly a D&D pun, substituting "Dragons" for "Gluttons".
That title sounds hilarious!
And the fact that delicious in dungeon is often written as DinD which is the main reason that title was chosen for the English translation even though there are alot of things that could've worked that would've been closer in meaning to the Japanese title
This series/manga is absolutely great. It shines in its storytelling, characters and comedy, the further they go the more serious it gets and it's important to not exhaust the only person who can revive the party in the worst case scenario. I love how they emphasized that Marcille is a crucial member of the party, but she needs to save her mana until it gets more dangerous.
And about the English dub, honestly I don't think it's bad, so far there hasn't been alterations to the dialogue that have been fundamentally different from what was actually conveyed, so I believe you're good to go.
Your reactions are among my favorites so far, as a manga reader and huge fan of the series I don't expect everyone to get it on first watch but I'm looking for fresh perspectives and ideas 😊

I really appreciate hearing that! This show is really deceptive because it seems like with one hand it's waving to distract me with rules of the world and it's worldbuilding with unique characters and scenarios, whilst the other is crafting a classical tale with strong thematic overtones.
Maybe you can give me your perspective on how close I am to this, but it seems to me to be a story that grows in appreciation over time. I think I appreciate this episode now after having finished it more than I did on immediate viewing.
It's kind of like you can eat and eat, but it still takes 10 minutes for your brain to signal you are full. In the same vane that the audience grows to realize how much they appreciate a story like this over time.

@@Noxiddar I agree that it can grow on you, especially after immersing deeper in the story with every chapter. You tend to look back with new knowledge and understanding and it makes the experience richer.
It's definitely a story I love to go back to, even after its end and I'm not alone judging by the comments on the early chapters.
You often catch new things you hadn't before on rereads. I won't say why to avoid spoilers, but the kelpie chapter is a good exemple of this, I love it very much.
For a good experience I'd recommend to acknowledge the details you might notice because lots of them are very much worth it. It's not exactly mysteries for the most part, but it is the kind of thing that you could theorize about.
I know it made my experience more enjoyable because I tend to brush off the things I notice too quickly!
It's incredibly fun to have looked at an element several times without comments in the story, only for it to become a sign of something bigger later on. It also helps making the progression of the story smoother instead of saying "actually the rules are like this now" out of nowhere.
So far I'd say the party's attitude towards resurection is a bit like that. Some people were confused that they're taking their time to reach the dragon, and I was too because they didn't explain it directly in one go, but that's because you can piece it together with separate info.
Marcille's first death, the dragon's slow digestion, Laios's attachement to Falin (to the point of wanting to save her even if the chances are slim), even how Laios learned that a lack of food was a death sentence... these are many elements that, when pieced together, explain why they want to hurry, but also "take their time" to maintain their bodies.
I think what you mentioned about the lackadaisical attitude towards death is best demonstrated when Laios is just taking in the party's inevitable failure at the very beginning. I initially thought he was kind of shell-shocked like the opening moments of Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan, but taking all those details in, like you said, starts to paint a cultural understanding of this world.
I think I can relate to that, as that's largely how I learned about Japanese culture, was by observing details as they happened around me, instead of getting an explanation for everything.
I think one area that stood out to me over time was school office culture. The students (I taught at elementary school mostly) were kind of left to their own devices and would come get their teacher when the students were ready and the room was prepared.
My Western mind was walking through how we'd never leave kids unattended, or all the what-if scenarios that brings.
But then, over time, I realize this isn't just school culture. It really permeates throughout all of Japanese society. It's a reflection of work culture, of family culture. There's just this level of... trust? Expectation? That made me realize Japanese kids grow up fast. They are expected to. By 6th grade they are in charge of a team of younger students to clean an assigned area of school. Then, they break down the daily assignments, and everyone gives compliments and feedback.
And I realized, there's a kind of bluntness that comes to observational skills from Japanese. I used to have an emotional response when they would point out my weight, or if I did something some way they found odd or inefficient, but over time I realized that's how they grew up in their world. I got to see it at every level.
I could probably go on and on, but I know that these kinds of things are really prevalent in Japanese Voice Acting too, and so it's been quite a nostalgic trip going through One Piece and hearing the cultural inferences baked into deliveries.
I know that by reacting to the dub for Delicious in Dungeon, I'm missing out on that, which is part of why I'd like to come back after I finish the first season and react to my favorite moments again with the Japanese VA, so I can make those connections with my time living in Japan. It'll be a lot of fun. This already IS a lot of fun.
And so much of that is reinforced by the wonderful people I've met along in each community. Thank you!

I mean, if you don't care about the dub not being a 100% proper translation, and the advantages of english voice acting offsets that, just ignore what people say. Not everyone has to be a purist.
I'm pretty sure even the subtitles are going to have broad interpretation, too, to be honest. As not everything can be conveyed at a 1:1. Outside of being a fluent speaker of Japanese and understanding not just the words but the nuance of word choice, colloquialisms, and cultural relevance, the experience will always come with a level of distortion. So the notion of a "purist" makes me snort chuckle.
It's all escapist fantasy and entertainment at the end of the day. In my opinion, the best way to experience a story is to enjoy it.
But I tend to agree with you.

I'm really thankful you enjoyed that! I don't really watch a lot of reaction channels, so I'm never sure if I am "doing it right" or not. But I generally try to react to convey how I'm feeling beyond just a giggle or an exclamation.
I try to react in a way that I can come back to these videos later and really understand how I felt at that moment.
Either way, I've really been enjoying this new chapter of my time on CZcams. Maybe someday I'll make all my 1000 gaming videos public again, but for now. I'm into this adventure and welcoming everyone along for the ride.

Delicious in Dungeon seems to be alliteration for Dungeons and Dragons. It's a fantasy world but unlike most fantasy worlds the proliferation of revival magic changes everything, including culture. There's a similar anime with the opposite premise where instead of most people can revive only like two people in the world can, the culture and attitude of that world is very different. It explains the serious and yet almost blasé attitude toward death, as long as your body isn't beyond repair revival is an option though it was also mentioned that attempting to revive could "backfire".
extremely minor spoiler on how the revivals work
basically, the curse of the dungeon traps souls inside, so revival is as simple as locating a soul and stuffing it back into the body
I'm still butthurt that the English publisher apparently didn't get the obvious "DnD" reference.

@@NoxiddarRight? Seems like most other translations get the joke too. Only the English one wrote "Delicious" and "Dungeon" in two completely different fonts.
There are really few anime/manga like Dungeon Meshi. Like most fantasy works I've seen or known are somewhat based on the classic JRPGs (and there are a lot of those even today) so everyone just casually throw terms like "inventory" "skills" and "stats" around even when it's not a videogame setting, and it's always the epic story about fighting the Demon King but with a twist here and there.
But here everything feels organic within the world even reviving dead people. It's pretty refreshing to see tbh. And trust me when I say the characters are unique on their own amd not just walking MMO tropes like they seem to.
You'll have to forgive me for my short-sightedness as I've not read the manga and am not far enough along to have really anything to say. I can only acknowledge what the anime puts in front of me (which for now is up to episode 2). Maybe it's a shortcoming of the dub, or my own limited experience in the anime/manga medium in general that I liken things here to what I am familiar with: video games.
I don't make the comparisons as a way to diminish the uniqueness of the story, but rather to lay a foundation of understanding as I process what I'm seeing as I see it.
It's nice to know that there is an original concept here. I remember before this came out, while I was knee deep in the beginning of One Piece I shopped around CrunchyRoll for another series I could potentially react to, and I just had no desire to react to Isekai #782, so when I did see the trailer for this later from Netflix I think my initial thought was "Oh that's an interesting approach to party-based fantasy." And that was about it.
I fully admit I came to this story because of the connection I'd made between Live Action One Piece and this English Dub, but what I didn't expect to find was a story that so far is very endearing, with characters that have really good banter and intdividualized personalities between them by even episode 2.!
I'm looking forward to moving beyond the surface and delving deep as the episodes go on, and eventually turning to the manga after the season wraps.

And thank you for taking the time to help clarify things I was asking in the reaction, I do appreciate it! I wasn't sure if this was a "wink wink nudge nudge" situation being coy about having a "game" kind of vibe, if that was a later reveal, or as you corrected, just part of the worldbuilding.
I know people have mentioned in the comments about the nature of reviving in this world, but I realize that comes from foreknowledge from the manga, because outside of a few remarks, it hasn't really been addressed in any meaningful way in the anime so far. So I'm kind of left to learn as I go, which I'm very much looking forward to it.
I think this is something unique that comes with the territory of an anime reaction since they are almost exclusively derived from the manga before it. I will always be directed by people's knowledge of the manga. It happens all the time in One Piece where someone will tell me something that happens way later in the manga to answer a question I have on episode 9. Haha.
Sometimes I feel conflicted like I should read the manga first, but then novelty of experiencing something new would be gone from the reaction.
Reactions are a new landscape I'm learning to navigate.

Honestly most of the time with dubbing is because Japanese as a language has a very different way than we English speakers do. So to do 1-1 translations is gonna sound very awkward and not an easy way for English native speakers. The bastardized dubs as some call it is really a relic of the 90s
Right. Japanese grammar is SOV, and English is SVO. Anyone expecting a 1:1 translation is probably unaware of that.
The bastardization I'm referring to isn't in moving around objects and verbs, though. It's about interjecting worldview into basic dialogue. It becomes a perversion of culture.
People can argue that it makes a story more culturally accessible to the localization language, but when basic sentence structures have inserted politics, worldviews, or stereotypes that weren't present in the source material it's problematic at best, and at worst is insulting to the original author's intent for their storytelling.
Anime is a style, but the storytelling from these authors is told distinctly from a Japanese POV. Subtitles and dubs should always aim to reflect that.
That's the kind of bastardization I'm referring to.
Lengthening dialogue or cutting parts of the original meaning to match lip syncing better is always going to be a shortcoming of the medium, but it is most certainly the lesser of two evils from inserting social commentary not native to the original storytelling.
I'm glad to see that this is largely a non-issue with Delicious in Dungeon.

No worries! Yeah, I really missed the boat (One Piece Pun) with 4Kids dubs. I'll be sure to look up and react to some of those dubs at some point, and probably laugh. Or cry. 🤣
And then we got those translators who decided to not only take full advantage of the situation by not only loosely translating books and anime, but doing so with the intention of changing the delivery of a line, and what they deemed politically correct.
An act so insulting to all parties involved that when Japan found out, official publishers began looking to AI as a substitution to human translators.

Honestly your plan of watching the sub as well after watching the dub is super reasonable and im surprised that more people... don't do that? I usually do that, watch the dub first and then the sub. I thought that was what everyone did
I've absolutely fallen in love with this dub. And at the same time, I am looking forward to thinking back on my favorite moments so I can revisit them in the sub and I think it would make for a pretty fun "looking back" video that also provides a fresh perspective!
I know I've watched Nami's "Tasukete/Help" scene in bith sub and dub (and live action). And even amongst that I feel like there's enough nuance in performance to comment on. So it should be quite fun. I'd love it if other reactors did that, but even so, I look forward to it for myself and my own curiosity!
