I love that the living armor is mollusk like an oyster, mussel, or clam. It feels so incredibly inventive yet completely believable. I'm stealing this concept if I ever write a living armor monster into a story.

Right?! I'm in constant amazement how this show deceptively appears like classical fantasy, and how it both honors it, yet also turns it on its head.
I wasn't sure from the first episode how this show would play itself out, but this witty, magical charm has pulled me in.
Good luck to your current and future writing! I haven't put pen to prose in years, but I've never lost that passion for storytelling!

Living Armor is the chapter that really hooked me on the manga, and this episode fully delivers

I could certainly see why! It's so inventive and clever how food drives not just the narrative forward, but also how it informs aspects of the world that one would never quite expect. I'm genuinely delighted to discover these new ways of thinking about older ideas.
      This episode was fantastic!

I love how the sword being alive is also logical, since it wouldn't make sense how living armor got weapons without these weapons being part of mollusk colony themselves

I really just loved the totality of creativity that went into realizing living armor. Having it just simply be magically enchanted is expected, and not particularly creative.
It makes me think of what Senshi tells Marcille in the next episode that magic is too convenient, and I really feel like this is hardwired into the author's own belief too, because I think we see More creativity inside limited parameters.
      Sometimes less is more.
And this depiction was more than I could have imagined. I loved it!

I love this alternative ways of presenting monsters. Instead of being an armor controlled by magic, why not be a group of mollusks?

It is one of those things that's so clever, so unexpected, and yet makes so much sense, I almost feel like I can sense the creative mind Ryoko Kui had when she came up with it. I'm noticing that a lot in the next episode, too, which I'll be sure to get up on the channel shortly!

2:45 I think the main reason for that might be isekai and non-isekai "game based" settings, which almost makes "feeling game-like" seem like an insult. Because it makes people think of these "wow, I can open my stat menu to grind my skill to max level!" type of stories. This story feels like it takes place in an RPG setting and the people act like people in such a setting would, but it doesn't constantly reference game mechanics (also like people in such a setting would. Because people within an RPG setting don't constantly talk about how they are in one [Xvar aside])

Your commentary is so pleasant and cool, it's so common especially with anime reactions to hear people pick apart the logic of every single thing and judge the characters and story even when they don't fully take it in, so it's great to hear someone who tries to view it as more than a logical story and see the themes, I just know you'll like what this show has in store:]

    • @Noxiddar

I really appreciate the kind words! My goal with these reactions is to go on an adventure and share my appreciation along the journey. I really think that there are a lot of channels that want to share what they THINK, but I think way too much. So, I wanted to share instead how these stories make me FEEL, and try to share why that is.
I think appreciation is the cornerstone of authenticity. Western culture is so consumer mindset that a lot of times we just tear through stories and move on, never really taking the time to let what we saw digest.
I have found that taking the time to appreciate things actually elevates my experience of the story. I hope to share THAT with everyone too! It's been an incredible journey so far!
I was initially skeptical if Delicious in Dungeon was the kind kf story I was looking for... but it sounded like a nice change of pace from One Piece.
Let me tell you when I say that every episode I have watched has grown my appreciation more and more for Ryoko Kui's wildly inventive imagination. I've recorded all the available episodes so far (just had some personal matters keep me from editing and uploading) but I should have a new reaction up soon!
I'm glad you are enjoying the reactions so far! Delicious in Dungeon is such a wonderful gem. I'm so glad I gave it a chance!

Thank you so much! Life certainly got in the way after Episode 4, and has slowed down the channel uploads, but on the recording side of things, I am caught up with the current episodes!
Episode 5 reaction will be posted on Friday. I'll be curious to see what you thought of that one as well!
I've just kind of fallen in love with this show. The first couple of episodes were familiarizing myself with the novelty of cooking monsters along the way, and I'd say Episode 3 was when I started to see beyond that and really start to click with the insane levels of creativity on display!
I'm genuinely having a good time, and it's been a lot of fun sharing that with you and everyone else that happens across my humble little channel!
Glad to have you on this adventure!

It is not specifically based on a video game, but rather classic RPG games like Dungeons and Dragons. In fact, the reason why the dungeon meshi mangaka likes the game Baldur's Gate 3 is because the mechanics try to emulate RPG games.

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  Před 6 měsíci +3

Right. I use the term "video game logic" as it helps me personally understand an underlying foundation toward death not really being an end (like respawning in games). I understand it's influenced heavily on RPG tabletop series like Dungeons and Dragons, which is what most RPG video games and their systems are heavily influenced by and historically built upon.
It's kind of circular in that regard. Video game logic is really game logic to a larger extent, and I probably use it interchangeably across these reactions.
I don't use that descriptor as a limiter to what I'm experiencing, but as a framework to guide my understanding. I love the Baldur's Gate series. They are fantastic computer games (interchangeably synonymous with video games and, by extension, games).
      Good thoughts. Thanks for sharing!

Lol likes is an understatement. Ryoko Kui did fanart of all the portraits from Baldur's gate 1 and 2 and specifically planned the end of dungeon meshi so nothing could stop her playing BG3 once it dropped xD

The likely reason for pushback on your Game like elements comment was due to your claim last reaction (I am binging them having just found you) that you would head cannon that this was just some MMO Campaign. People likely felt it was dismissive of the characters they have grown to deeply love.
I agree there is inspiration from fantasy games and TTRPGs and JRPGs, but there are also anime that EXPLICITLY take place in games or games like worlds, so the distinction between that and Delicious in Dungeon is important to many anime fans.
Hope this clarified. and hope you have a wonderful week. :)

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  Před 5 měsíci

This is probably true. However, there's a double-edged sword that comes along with that.
On one edge, I don't believe that, to my knowledge, I have ever explicitly said this world was a video game one, just that it felt like there was some sense of video game-esque logic applied to it.
**Quick Edit** I do think that I had said something along the lines of "until I know for sure one way or the other this is how I'll continue to view it." Which some probably cued some Dark Souls boss music and took as a personal challenge. Haha.
I understand that to be a working framework for viewing this particular universe as a way of inspiration, and I think people mistakenly misconstrued that to be a form of some reductionist viewpoint.
I wouldn't even say it's anime fans, as much as it's a tiny handful of manga fans of this particular story that have sought to correct me on this. But I often wonder why they feel the need to. The more I have learned about Ryoko Kui, the more I understand my framework of understanding to have been a pretty fair and logical assessment. Especially given her love of Baldur's Gate. I imagine I saw so much inspiration from video games because that was what she wanted to show.
This is certainly something that comes up a lot even with my One Piece reactions, too. Manga readers (or in that instance, anime viewers that are far ahead or up to current) only see the breadth of their accumulated knowledge and nothing else. In their time building that knowledge to see far beyond what's in front of them, they've become short-sighted in their understanding of how someone new learns.
Maybe this is the teacher in me, but learning always starts from experiential wisdom and then assumed knowledge. Those two things are then tested against new information, and thus, the repository for knowledge in a given subject begins to grow.
And so a lot of that supposed "pushback" is because there exists a small vocal minority who is loathe to the idea that anyone misunderstand or posit an idea they know to be false (this extends well beyond anime and manga). So they descend to the comments like the righteous arbiters of truth they believe themselves to be. There is only their understanding from knowledge. There is no learning. The lens they view from is law.
And so people like that crack me up. What's the point of seeing and being so far ahead if they've forgotten the path that got them there?
So I think the other end of that double-edged sword is that people like the ones I mentioned above in the comments have made their mind up about what I think based on what THEY think. And it turns out that is the real reductionist viewpoint all along. Haha.
I don't really anchor on this point anymore because it was never meant to be "head canon." It is just a framework for me to build an understanding of the world around me. Which, as you'll see, has made me fallen deep into the creative genius of Ryoko Kui with nothing but love and appreciation for some of the most wildly imaginative forms of fantasy and practicality I've ever really come across.
I hope you enjoy the reactions. I've been having such a great time with this story!

If people were resistant to the "game logic" phrasing, they might be carrying adjacent genre baggage. People complain a lot about the overplayed tropes of the isekai transportation/reincarnation subgenre that makes heavy use of video game stats and mechanics (like a litRPG novel would), and it'd also be all too easy to be eager to say it's not actually a game world unlike other series like Log Horizon where MMORPG players get transported to a world that matches the game they played. Ironically, Dungeon Meshi is close to what I imagine the gamelit genre to be like, except there's no original IP upon which this comic is based off of. (Unlike Blade & Bastard, the light novel series based on the setting of the Wizardry games, as imagined by the author of the Goblin Slayer series.)
And after writing all of this down, I see someone else has already pointed out the baggage! Well this time I'll just post the comment anyway.
I really like to hear your thoughts as I make my way through these, btw!

    • @Noxiddar
      @Noxiddar  Před 4 měsíci +1

I definitely get where people are coming from, I think most people were probably with me until I declared I was going to think of the world with game logic until told otherwise. I think this is the last time I ever brought it up. Haha.
I hope you enjoy this journey of discovery I find myself on! I've fallen behind from some personal matters, but rest assured, more episodes are coming!
I appreciate you taking the time to break it down. I realize I've got a lot of ignorance in a lot of things anime since I'm not very well versed in many of the shows and tropes, other than what I've personally experienced in real life living in Japan! 🤣
Have a good rest of your week, and enjoy! It's good to share good company with such a feast!

I think the video game thing might’ve been a miscommunication. The show is very game-based but obviously the characters do not live in a video game world like in some other animes. Maybe people (it’s me, I’m people) initially thought you were speculating that they lived in a video game world, but I see that’s not what you meant.
Yeah, this show builds _heavily_ off of DnD and maybe MMOs (I wouldn’t know, so I’ll take others’ word for it) and likes to give in-world explanations for as many things as it can, such as the revival mechanic that gets explained later on. I haven’t gotten far enough to see any explanation for dungeons always having levels, though I think it’s supposed to be implied to be an ecosystem thing?
