Glad someone has pointed out the difference. Most apprentices do not actually tattoo real human skin until the near end of their apprenticeship, which can be 2-5 years depending on how far you are in your sketching career. Before human skin comes fake skin and before that, you need to be able to sketch on command whatever your teacher presents you with with no faults.

One time a guy started a GoFundMe with a goal of $10 because he wanted to buy ingredients for potato salad. His donation rewards if you did donate were like...I will send you a picture of potato salad. I will send you a video of me making potato salad. I will make as much potato salad as is donated for and then donate the potato salad for a big potato salad party. He not only made his $10, he made THOUSANDS. To me it's the most inoffensive version of using GoFundMe for it's original purpose. GoFundMe wasn't intended to be the backbone of the American healthcare industry, but has become that, so I can def see why you feel that way. This woman is someone who needed to fund her own cross-country trip rather than asking people to pity her, but GoFundMe kinda was made for dumb shit originally

I made $80 on GFM before my parents told me I should be ashamed for taking money from people for my needs. (I had sepsis and undiagnosed diabetes in July 2022, I had to have a below the knee amputation which meant I couldn’t work retail, I’m a student and I couldn’t just go and launch a new career when I was going around in a wheelchair. I put up a GFM because I was suffering from PTSD nightmares which was mixed with my history of depression/borderline personality disorder and anxiety. It was $6,000 for one year of therapy in the Bay Area so I could tackle only having one foot in something I didn’t know any other way in which to pay for)
My parents saw and were disgusted that I would feel entitled enough to ask for people to help me get therapy so made me take it down, my mother even made me print out something showing her people had been refunded

Completely agree, the person you know is the kind of person who should be getting help from donations. I’m a dance teacher in Australia and there’s a huge number of studios who do fundraising so their students can go on a holiday to Disneyland and dance in a quiet part of the park. These are healthy, blessed, extremely privileged children and families, most have already travelled overseas before. My Mum has multiple health issues and has nearly died twice in the past year. She is bedridden, I shower and dress her. My Dad and I care for her full time, even though we also both have Ulcerative Colitis, so I can only work a couple of hours a week. I would never expect fundraising, I don’t know where people get the arrogance to expect money handed to them!

When I started my apprenticeship, I agreed to a 15,000 dollars over three years agreement that wasn't just to learn tattooing, but also learning literally EVERYTHING about owning and running a shop. I paid the first 5,000, and then 6 months later, my "mentor" decided that on top of me already working from 7 am to 7 pm at the shop, 7 days a week, ( I wish I were kidding) he also said he wanted me to come up with the full 15,000 within the first year, and that he was shortening the actual time of the apprenticeship to one year. So not only do I not have time to get another job to do this, he wasn't willing to let me pay off the rest of the money by doing apprentice tattoos for the next 6 months. Needless to say, these were absolutely IMPOSSIBLE conditions. So I had to leave. And he was a twenty year established artist, in his own shop. So about 2 years later, I saw that he was setting up a gofundme for 10,000 dollars to outright pay off the building that his shop was in, and the fact that if he had just kept his end of the deal, he would have gotten that 10 grand from me, on time, and would have been able to buy his shop regardless, was not lost on me. The sheer irony, right? I did not donate.

I work for a tattoo artist, and let me just say, there is a lot of drama in the tattoo world. Most artists don't stand for it, so if you cause drama, they will let you go quickly. I think this is because most people think it is an easy money job, when in reality it takes a lifetime of dedication and honing of your craft. Also, it can take years to get a full apprenticeship depending on where you are in your art career. If you want to be a tattoo artist but feel as though your drawing skills are not worth it, remember that a good tattoo artist may charge less for the first few years and work with you on your drawing abilities and to find your style. This is common and not judged (at least by good mannered tattoo artists). You may need to draw for hours a day and report your work for critic every day. Don't feel deterred and go for it! I have no artistic skill and my boss told me that it would take me years (2-3) before they felt comfortable letting me tattoo fake skin, and I am more than happy not to do that. Also, most tattoo artists will work with you on a monthly plan so that if you are let go early, you haven't paid the total just to get canned. If anyone charges you for the total beforehand, just know that most likely if you are let go, especially in no fault firing states, you may lose that money for no reason, and the courts cannot really help you. Be careful, be vigilant, and follow your dream!

totally agree. im a tattoo artist and for every artist we have, we have a hundred + people wanting to be trained.
It takes alot of dedication and skill and 2-3 years of training minimum just so they can be trusted to work on actual people.. and even then its still not paying clients... because its not like you can just erase a tattoo if you get it wrong.. it takes ALOT of skill and precision and focus to be an artist.. so the last thing i would want in my shop is a trainee who creates drama.

She was most likely renting supplies out from the shop or else hadn't actually reached the point in her apprenticeship where she was allowed to use them so just hadn't gotten any yet. It's not uncommon for apprentices to be expected to be there for at least a few weeks to months before they're allowed to even practice with the tattoo gun. Usually you have to learn to take them apart, clean them properly, put them back together, and clean the station and other supplies while also following all of the proper safety procedures and prove you can do it consistently before you'll be allowed to try using them. You also have to do a lot of normal drawing in tons of different styles in a way the tattoo artist is happy with before they'll let you practice with the tools.
She's bragged about not doing any of the cleaning stuff and hasn't shown any art in long enough for me to assume she hasn't been practicing. If the people training her were like the ones where I'm from they never even let her touch a tattoo gun in that shop

My husband is working himself to death trying to keep us afloat, while I work in retail as much as I can before my body can’t do it anymore, yet we still have debt from utilities and medical bills…Then my mum got cancer and I’ve become her carer as well. The cost of everything keeps rising, and we can’t afford a Christmas this year. However, I haven’t done a go fund me because there are so many other people out there going through much tougher times than us.

Damn, that's is a truly level headed man I've seen in a while in this mad world.
If you fire an employee, that's something between you and them. You don't have to explain your decision process to the whole internet.
No matter how I see this that guy preserved the employee privacy, that's the right thing to do.

Years ago I tried to start a gofundme for my Guinea pig who needed surgery… I loved her so much and after a few vet visits they told us she needed surgery to remove her ovaries because there was a cancerous tumor on it or something like that. I know how silly that seems but I love animals so much and I couldn’t stand seeing her suffer and we couldn’t afford the surgery. Well obviously no one donated and she died soon after. It’s not as important as feeding the homeless and other things of course but seeing people use the website for something like this and it actually working… my heart aches.

The GoFundMe stuff always pisses me off so much. My entire apartment burnt to the ground and I lost everything I ever owned at 21. I’m grateful for the amount of money that was donated and it helped us out so much. But we didn’t get close to what some of these people get for stuff like this. And there’s so many other people who deserved that money.

Also, genuine question, what’s wrong with a tattoo apprentice not having tattoos? I wanted to go to school for tattoos at one point but I realized usually everyone has tattoos

I was a tatoo artist for 5 years with clientele from journalists, doctors etc. I was not the best but I was continually learning. When my country made a union, i was asked to pay 3000 euro to be in it. There were only 3 women in the field. I refused. I gave up when my ex took my gear to give it to his gf ( who broke my marriage , she was a friend). I took it back, and left the profession, gutted. It was the last straw. Its very gatekeeped.

I think I want to push back some and say that gofundme was never supposed to be for strictly, tangibly important things. The creator of the site, I believe, has stated in the past it was supposed to be used to help fund hobbyists and similarly non-dire things. That he actually hates that gofundme is almost exclusively used for medical debt, housing costs, ect, and wishes it wasnt necessary for costs related to quality of life.
And a person can use a gofundme for moving and apprenticeship 🤷
Now here's the but, I agree that her purposefully being vague about where people's money is going and yoinking the prize was wrong. As well as allowing a hate mob to gather against her former teacher
