I've used Sikkens most of my career since 1989. One thing i can tell you is I could easily paint the whole side with less than 21 ounces of clear. I spray with lower pressure and closer. We all have our own techniques. Efficiently is the game now with cost being outrageous.
Any paint job can be The Paint Job from Hell Brian... I have never seen another occupation where things can so wrong so fast, you seem to handle it well though!😎
Seems like it's always the easy fast jobs that mess up
I had 'my' Paint Job from HELL Friday! But after sum extra time and sweat i was able to prevail.
Imaging being a dipshit who does it in his driveway like some doofus I know.🤦🏽♂️
Had my nightmare paint job when I sprayed my fender flares. After I cleared it, a dark grey stripe appeared. I left it dry, sanded it a lil bit and resprayed. The stripe came back after the clear again 🙄. I said screw it and installed them. A month later quarter size fish eyes appeared over the entire flare. Another the paint separated. Whatever cause it ate into the flare and caused huge craters.
The music business is like painting your car. When things go wrong they go wrong fast and they are not easily fixed. Ask me how I know. I've been a professional musician for 50 years
Don't overthink it, it's just paint. But then we have blending additives or solvent reducer to blend the edge... I've learned there's tons of thinking involved in painting! That's why my beginner brain is blown!
Attention to detail and incredible paint technique. Wish more guys took pride in their work like you Brian
Ty my friend !
The point you made about the primer being porous after sanding, and the sealer not being porous because it doesn't get sanded, was helpful.
Thank you.
Brother you done it the right way and the customer should be grateful. You have also shown professionalism and the dealer should be grateful for that. God Bless You
Thanks 👍
Your channel has been such an inspiration to me. What I have learned on your channel allowed me to help a friend on an 1989 Ford 4x4 project. I have painted the cab interior, the back of the cab, front of the bed, under the hood, etc. The outside of the truck will get a professional paint job, but it's amazing how good the truck looks! Everyone is amazed that I painted it with no prior experience. :-) I have clear coat peeling on my truck side where a previous repair was poorly done. Now I have the confidence to paint it myself. It won't be "perfect" but it will look 1000% better than it does now. Thank you again!!
Very nice techniques! Im adopting the "Just walk away" and the don't spray it how you want it to look on the first coat of clear. Thanks again Brian! Looks awesome! That is rare to have a paint job turn out the way you wanted. I like that color
I learned the walk away method the hard way but its the best method. Trust me ty !
Walk away and set a timer so you’re not tempted to take a peek 😅
Walking away can fit into so many aspects of life. Patience has to be learned.
I respect all people who can shoot and blend colour. This video was amazing to watch and helped me learn. Thank you for the awesome art you have shared...
Oh Brian, you can't imagine how much i enjoyed that thick second coat of clear you put on the car. Very well done!
Brian, working in a shop that uses the same exact system and I can say I truly appreciate your videos and the way you go into detail from the cleaning process to the spray guns to the chemicals themselves. Seriously awesome and I feel lucky that if I don’t exactly know something I can always find one of your videos and take away great points from it. Awesome work!
We needed to get a piece of equipment painted to protect the underlying metal, and since we had planned to keep it a while we decided on a full strip and re-paint so that corrosion could be properly addressed. The OEM paint lasted an impressively long period of time, but almost 40 years of sun had done a lot of damage. We thought we took it to a professional, but as ours was in the paint shop and disassembled we heard of another owner who had an issue where the color and top coats fell away from the primer on the trip back from the paint shop. When we finally got ours back, three months after the expected completion, the color and top coats bubbled up in certain areas. It turns out, that paint shop owner thought he knew organic chemistry better than the paint manufacturers, so he was mixing and matching primer from one company, color from another, additives at ratios outside of manufacturer instructions, etc. Since the paint was not applied in compliance with the instructions, the multiple manufacturers involved did not warranty anything. The first shop was not going to pay for another shop to fix his problem without a lawsuit (and at $500/ hr our attorney fees would have exceeded the outright cost of a new paint job just with the normal summons and complaint/ pre-trial motions phases), we no longer trusted his work to fix his mistake, and the only fix was stripping back to bare metal and re-painting the whole thing, so we were looking at another five figures to paint a job not even a year old. Not fun. It is nice to see a professional showing how the job is done properly.
No drips, no runs, no errors. This job is a home run with a difficult color and a tough customer. Using a good paint system too. congrats
They arent all perfect. Ty!
I started painting back in "74". Since then I've worked on over 12000 vehicles, some very small spot jobs, some very large overalls on trucks and not everyone went out the door on time. Auto painting is an art as much as a sicence and sometimes you need to go back and start over. My goal as a flat rate painter was to do good work like you did in this video and get my 80 hours done by lunch time on wednesday so that everything else is gravy. The hard part is doing that until your 70. During my last few years, every morning I told myself that you will be remembered by your last paint job, make it a good one! Your job looked great and your advice is spot on, you should be a Sikens paint rep.
Gorgeous color, looks so good with the black trim. Brighter accents I don't think would work with as well, but the black really sets it off. Excellent job!
Been a custome bike and car painter for myself for a decade starting , in a shop as their dedicated painter and man i just found your videos i appreciate the tips to refresh my skills 🙏 God bless G !
Brian, you remind me how important it is to use one step slower reducers on some of those high metallic colors for blending and smoothness. You did everything right on that one with blending the fender and quarter panel. The job turned out great and I really enjoyed the video as well. Keep up the great work and videos. You are an inspiration to me and Im sure many others.
This man is always correct. Always learn to do it the right way to minimize the chance of a problem. Wiping down for 15 minutes saves an hour or more later.
I'm really old school Brian and I love that color. We have a hand me down piano that's tiger eye oak and spot on to that color. Back in the eighty's a color called Driftwood, a Chrysler color was one that was hard to spot in. I think there was 15-20 alternates, more than any color ever! Good work as always!!
I have chest pains watching this. What a fantastically detailed job with so much training, experience/wisdom, and skills required. Especially blending adjacent panels. uuf
Love that color. Your attention to detail is second to none. The adviser better be happy that job came out fabulous. Take care my friend. Enjoy your weekend is sunny Florida.
The advisor is the owner actually 😇😇 ty for the love jim
I didn't know what sealer did for being applied over primer so it melts you edges in so you don't have to feather it out in between the primer and color coats. Thx for that. What a clean job. Nice work on that one as always.
Love the blend information. I'll be looking for some more info on that. Thanks!
Amazing. Thank you for the detailed review and on the fly commentary!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The color is 🔥 in fact I have a 2021 in this color & I always get compliments, some asked did I have it wrapped, now it's not for everyone but it's definitely for me
I used to have the same belief on refinishing, why not do that little extra to ensure a great job. Unfortunately, bean counting & penny pinching bosses didn't have the working knowledge to understand that, and were too hard headed to listen to reason. Working for great people makes all the difference, you are definitely blessed. 😊👍
Great point!
Nice job 👏 👍
Thanks Brian, I love the way you teach
insane how easy you make it look. gorgeous!
I've been using those blue towels for years. I love those things. I like that color and a nice car.
The best!
That came out awesome, I like the color and very informative video 🍻🍻
That color reminds me of the 1974 Sierra Gold on the "Rockford Files" Firebird. I loved that color. Great Job man!
I like the color. I didn't know about the sealer for the primed areas. That's good to know.
Watching this channel got me over the hump painting my 66 mustang Betsy. Thanks for helping me out Brian.
That is awesome!
Hey Brian, you always explain the steps and why.... for me I gained extra understanding of sealer...being clear and smoothe. I think there's so many terms bandied about that get confusing/confused for different products. Like I used to think sealer was a beige coloured primer kind of appearance....
What I HATE about modern cars is the plastic. They ALWAYS look like it was an after-thought that they got painted in a different shade. Your car there (GORGEOUS colour btw in natural light - in the booth it looked a bit 70's sh*t brown hahaha) has front and rear bumper covers and door handles - all look different. So I know it's a different substrate - so it offers a different end finish to the metalwork..... so if that's the case - why isn't a clear sealer used to stop that effect (as it works really well on primer?????).
I feel like it spoils an overall appearance.
I hope that's a helpful bit of feedback on the brilliant videos you do and the question may help others too.
Stu :)
As a retired certified Autoglass tech, I have always used a two rag method for cleaning glass. Now, retired and restoring a mustang, I still use the two rag method prepping the body. One rag wet and follow with dry rag.
Love it. Every time I watch I learn something.
Excellent work and beautiful color!
You are one off the Best,,, thanks for share your knowlege You Make very good paintjobs 👍
Awesome paintjob ❤
I learnt how to use sealer and avoid sanding and cleaning the whole car.
Also you started final coat from the doorpanel and then continued from back fender covering the whole side.
Thanks 👍
Brian I can see how using the sealer really helped this paint lay down nicely. Nice job!
Sealer is hard to explain but it works !
@@PaintSociety you did it well. Thanks 😊
To prevent pump seals from damaging turn your spray bottle upside down and spray out the remainder that’s left in the stem. That way the seals aren’t soaking in chemicals
A mais alta qualidade!!!! Top top top parabens a pintura automativa assim é altamente glorificada parabens grande trabalho!!!!🤙🤙🤙🤙👍
excellent job...such a great color...eye of the tiger
I am a hvacr tech came up to your channel looking for pearl white car job done fanatic work I must say watching from the Caribbean 🇱🇨
Who's the man? You the man 💪🏼 flawless victory. Excellent work brian top notch Refinishing skills my man 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Thanks for stopping by! And appreciate the love. Its odd one comes out really
Nice but when it does, its great feeling. Hey man its getting hot down here again 😩
Looks really good and also done right by not melting somewhere on the piller also doing the fender as well
I don't like the color
Also like that you didn't walk the side from qtr to fender,i pretty much clear the same way
And using the wetbed to melt the sealer edge so everything is uniform 💪 great job Brian
Would love to see an in depth video on how you work with bare aluminum panels! So much aluminum used on my vehicles! I've tackled several successful projects from bare steel and bare plastic but never had to deal with aluminum.
Thank you guys your video really helped me please tell me what is the lack of my work? Thank You
coming from 5 years of panel work and being around painters i thought id give painting a go and man did it kick my butt, your channel has helped a tonne!, coming from scotland only thing i would say is it would be helpful is when doing metallics u mentioned to use extra slow hardener but its so cold in scotland would fast hardener be better? its usually around 10- 20 degrees here
Slow. Give thats a try
color grew on me throughout the video technique and execution were flawless
Thank you!
Little tip is becareful with sealer on those areas over spray can get into(top quarter area) if paint doesn't get in..ull have sealer over spray after removing foam and tape...I usually back tape the edge and keep the over spray from getting in
Great tip!
My favorite paint color on a sunny day it pops.
Something I was taught when blending metallics is to over reduce your final coat and extend your blend. Aside from being a crutch, can you explain the pros and cons of this approach
Cheers mate nice job.Regards Chris
Brian, you've made me want to start my channel up again! I love how you teach, and i would love to do simlar videos but i use spies hecker hi-tec 480 waterborne basecoat. I think that would help some others in our community. What do you (and other painters) think?
Mikes from Jamaica great job
I struggle with why a blend is selected over painting the whole side of a car as a novice. This video is likely the best example for me and my unfortunate sand through mistake. Thanks for all of your great videos.
I love that color. About to paint an old car of mine a similar, but darker color. 👍
Go for it!
Do you have any videos on how to prep/paint a fiberglass panel or fiberglass car? Great videos by the way!👍🏼👍🏼
I was hoping to see the HF Black Widow 2.0 in action! Good work dude.
Couldnt take that risk 😂
I’m sold on the clear sealer !
1 thing paint jobs cannot be rushed at all nice work B
Brian, that’s the way I would have done it. When in doubt, blend it out.
That merch baby need that
Great job!
U like that 4600 Brian, thx for introducing me to it!
Its the best. Hands down
looks awesome! Can you do a video on how to take the trims and mouldings off before painting?
Yes
great job Brian
Looks excellent. What more could you have done.
Came out beautiful
Thanks! My secret is safe with you 😂
Nice,,,,,from phillipines see your coat👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
well, it's good to have all the proper tools, and materials that are recommended by the paint manufacturer, or so. a lot of shops use different materials some not even the sealers due to high cost, and that goes for Clear coats as well. be honest with me painters, for example, do you use microfiber wipes? or do you use 3 different products to finish the paint job?
I like the color actually! Great job.
Thank you! Cheers!
Cool color
When you say blender, are you talking about what is also called clear-base and/or intercoat clear? Thanks.
looks good mate, can you more aabout the air mask you use when painting. thanks
Sure thing
Hey I got a 80 gallon compressor and was wondering the best way to plum the piping with a dryer system or separator
Wow, what a awesome work. Can I ask what is the minimum temperature did you spray inside?
I have read on Google it say the ideal temperature is between 50f to 60f as I wasn't sure so that's why I ask.
At the end I wish you would've done a complete walk around the whole car I would love to see what the original badging was and to really compare how well it all matched
The original bading is chrome and the original color is on the front of the fender and back of the qtr
I'd love to see a video repairing, simulated mistakes. All your shoots seem to go so smooth!
Maybe highlighting properly repairing a run, sag, bug, reaction, solvent pop, someone touching it, LOL. Think it would be educational.
I Definitely understand this. This doesn’t happen often because i follow same procedures every-time however if it does I will make a video. From time to time things do off track. Ty
@@PaintSociety Be good content for a short... It's just paint. LOL
Is the super slow reducer helping with dry edges? When you did the top of door, A pillar on to the front fender, then went back to rear door and finally went on to the front fender. Times I do it, their is a dry edge and can't get rid of it and have to back track. Can be tricky.
Brian, can I maybe use some of my surplus clearcoat as my “sealer”?
A lot of good tips from a pro.
Nice explaned..superrrrrr
Thank you so much 🙂
Are those black Aspec emblems available at the dealer? Love the channel and love that Tiger Eye color!
Yes
hey bro nice paint job. I started following you and I really like your channel. Question: Why you put the mis coat orientation right away after the second coat and this can be done in any other paint brand waterborne and solvent?
While the paint is still wet I do the mist coat so the mist coat lands in wet paint and doesnt land dry and crusty.
hey, future diabetic: lighten up. you are first and last when it comes to paint. great content. good video.
Oh yes! Give me a month and youll see the change 😀😀
Did y’all color sand and buff that?? Great work
What are the best connectors for your air hose to compressor and gun?
When you say water based then solvent based, can you say what are preferred of each?
11:49 "just walk away" needs to be highlighted. You could do an entire series on when to use that technique😂
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Tony, sanded down wringles on paint down to primer yesterday.
Sprayed Duplicolor primer 3 coats. Looked good till today and has lines and marks. Cuting it with 600. Why is this happening? It did get about 50F last night. Jeff from Fl.
I always learn some for your channel. I have a hard time with blending, so I'm always lookin for ways to do it easier. Great job.
Try that extra slow reducer and extra of it
@@PaintSociety will do
It would be great if you included the exact amounts of products you are mixing for reference. We know you mixed 320g/11.2oz base at a 70% ratio bc 224/0.7=320, but we have no idea how much clear was mixed. It helps people who can't guess the amounts waste less product. You definitely make this look too easy.
So in ur opinion which Sagola cap is better for clear and single stage? And what size tip? I currently spray PPG delfleet essential single stage and DCU2021 clear. I’ve been thinking about getting a Sagola.
I use the lowes pump sprayer with soapy water. They barely last 2 jobs.
Everybody body shop I meet, I tell them I watch Paint Society. I try to get their expectations as high as possible from the gate.
It appeared t0 me that with the paint and the clear you were about 90% overlap, and pretty good amount of air, and no runs.. I would have had runs, and my luck would have blown paint flakes off the plastic, as well as the tape, and most of that would land in the last coat of clear. My question is, are we watching this is real time, or is it doctored before we see it? Either way you did a amazing job.
Thom
nice job
