That moment you realise Melisandre arriving was unexpected and so the fire araks were a bonus. Meaning they were originally going to charge with the fire-less versions, even blinder and less effective. End me. Edit: I can see a lot of people want coverage for episode 4, what I can tell you is that I have already began working on a season 8 recap in total and it will hopefully release soon after the last episode does...stay tuned folks, it's gonna be long....*sigh*
And hilariously they didnt even give them proper weapons to counter the dead. Yeah........ Hilarious. I guess they were clearly expecting Melisandre to warp in and do her magic, except they werent. *facepalm*
Not *less* effective, *completely* ineffective. They weren't made of Valyrian steel. They were sending the Dothraki to their 100% certain death and contribution to the army of the undead. And not one of the Dothraki paused for a second and thought, "Wait a minute..."
all I want is a show to be smarter than me. I'm not a scholar I only have a passing knowledge of midlevel siege tactics and battle tactics. I'm sure there's plenty of books that have accounts of battles to draw inspiration from. Christ a decent rts game will teach you not to attack the front lines with cavalry.
Lady Bladebinder certainly going to kill Cersei. Don’t know about her killing the mountain though. I imagine they’ll make the hound fight him so all the bar reactions can see “cleganebowl”
No amount of plot armour would save Sean Bean you could have him covered head to toe in plot armour even then somehow Sean Bean dies. No but really seriously no one important died I mean come on even Ser Davos survives and he was on the fucking wall last I checked.
@JoeRingo118 they've been hinting at it since season 1. He traded Joffrey's face for Stannis, and from Stannis moved on to Brienne. He will reveal his true identity after he kills Cersei using Jaime's face. These show writers are utterly brilliant!
They were extras who were scheduled to he on the walking dead, but they got lost and were searching the library for an Atlas Map book so they can figure out how to get to thr right set.
LordOfThePizzaPie the fun part about that is, that there is actually a bunch of hints that the boar was warged by bloodraven (at least in the book). So indirectly, the boar might actually be a villain in the book
The boar killed King Robert, but the Night King killed Eunuch Theon. But in GoT lore, Eunuchs make the best fighters... and siblings are the best lovers!
That wouldn't work wedge is a man. It needs to be wedgina. There fixed it and made it woke for 2020. God I hope disney doesnt see my post. They probably would think its a good idea and make remake jedi.
They already did. A scavenger girl killed the most powerful Sith in the Galaxy ,who can destroy space fleet by lighting, by just crossing two stolen lightssabers.... And yes, Ep9 is remake of Ep 6.
I actually think they still could have had Arya kill the NK - IF they did it correctly. If we saw what Dan and Dave promised: "A showdown between Jon and the NK is coming. One more intense than Hardhome, more intense than Beyond the Wall. It's going to shock the fans" If we saw Jon, Briene, Jamie, Jorah or anyone with Valerian Steel fight and kill the WW's and then Jon went 1v1 vs the NK- I can totally see the NK winning that fight and kicking Jon's ass, but before the NK can kill Jon- he's saved from Arya. It's a payoff that would have more worthy than the one that we got.
Devin Daily they could do anything if it was written with a modicum of thought lol. Tyrion could’ve killed the Night King if they bothered trying to write it
Well, it's like if Darth Vader had chocked to death on a peanut allergy and Jabba was the main boss, above the Emperor... "Nemesis a worthy is ones proof of nobility."

Okay so, let me get this straight: -they have a castle -they put their troops outside of the castle while defending the castle They ignored the entire point of why castles exist.
Honestly, this is just a live adaptation of a noob defending against the Vampire Counts with Norsca in Total War: Warhammer. This is exactly what NOT to do in a siege battle.
Antonio Sonntag even better the zombies aren’t gonna shoot back and they’re dumb so they could’ve easily funneled them into a choke point but no they had to keep their entire army outside the castle walls for some reason.
Tbh when I watch the episode on my phone, its so dark and pitch black, I didn't see anything after the cavalry charge. And the screen only brightens when the dragons appear but 60% of the time are pitch black
Genuinely, i didnt hate this episode. It was easily the best of the season on that score alone I throw in the shots you could actually see since it was TOO FUCKIN DARK
Cartoon Critique I remember watching the earlier seasons, loving the main plot but always looking forward to the Nights Watch segments, and always thinking that the white walkers would build and build and eventually become the main focus, and season 7 teased that they would be, so disappointing how it turned out :/
and pretty much her entire screen time for the last season was basically her standing around looking stern. i'd be pissed if i was Lena Heady, they screwed her over
That was my reaction when he showed the two scenes with Jon side by side to show how different the backdrop was, except they were so dark I couldn't see a thing.

@@whitecreamymilk8436 in all fairness, it was heavy calvary doing the charge and they had a literal angel on their side (Gandalf). though they could have done a better job showing that the light he used actually hurt them, not just made them recoil. broke up the spear/pike wall at least.
@@DoubleGlock45 i realize that. But again it was also said this army was specifically made to kill cav. And they set up the pikes and never moved them. Also the horse bridge scene was bad. I dont think he knew how cav worked. I say this and i actually liked twin towers more then return of the king. It was a great battle the cav tactics still sucked. I liked the warg tactics earlier on though. I thought it actually worked. But cav in the seige didnt imo.
I am a tactical enthusiast, I did had a god damned stroke watching this episode. I actually screamed out loud. Only someone who knows medieval tactics could do this much wrong. They had to know what to do right, and do the opposite.
No one needed to come over. No extra armies. No dragons. Everyone needed to kill the white walkers were already there. Jon snow left winterfell for no reason - they didn't even need dragon glass!!! All they needed was bran, arya and the fucking dagger. The end
Why did they even go that far north of the wall to get a wight to show Cersei and Daenarys? Take some low life criminal on death row and kill him on the other side of the wall. Anyone that dies north of the wall turns into a wight at that point in the show. If they did this then NK doesn’t kill any dragons and wall is never breached. They would have to build ships or cross the bridge of skulls at westwatch-by-the-bridge. Also why are the heavily armored knights of the vale not on horseback? I’m sure heavily armored lancer cavalry would do much better in a charge than the Dothraki would with kopesh swords and some horse archers here and there.
@@highchiefvercingetorix6586 True, but unlike here MATN uses his archers on the walls first then has his cavalry flank and not rush heavy infantry at the start of the battle.
Do you not think that the white walkers have any brains at all, and would siege the unsullied/dothraki/whatever inside winterfell until they all starve?
Spear/shieldwalls outside of the walls can be useful (especially when the enemy has no firepower) because it buys your archers on the walls more time to shoot at the enemy, though clearly nobody on the wall was taking advantage of this anyway
Allan Mulrian and I can win a siege battle without losing a single man because I don’t do that. I meant the AI knows it should keep its men inside the castle, not that to fight the AI you should.
Tbh ASoIaF still uses plot armor. Samwell should have died at the Fist, or at White Tree, or Crasters, and Jon should have died in the Skirling Pass. Its also never an important character that dies to happenstance, except maybe Khal Drogo and the infected wound.
"This episode was super dark." "Well it had better be, seeing as how it's the decisive battle with the White Walkers and the Night King. I'd imagine a lot of important people were going to die." "No, I mean I couldn't see shit. Only like two people died lol."
It should have.... hes immune to fire anyway. Because Targarien and shit. Great way for him to kill the frigin dragon. Just walk into the flame and stick the sword into its mouth. But naaaah we can't have epic moments for our White males. Only little girls can be epic. Because that is progressive or something like that.
I just realised that the undead dragon blows a massive hole in Winterfell's huge stone wall in one shot, and then later it can't kill Jon with it's fire because he's hiding behind a tiny little stone. LOL.
The reason for that is because the undead dragon is badly injured by the time it goes after Jon. You can see a couple of shots of it as it tries firing but the blue fire isn't coming out properly. It's not a plot hole, it's just not very clear because it's so dark it's nearly impossible to see anything...
You have to at least admire Maisie Williams for beng honest and vocal about her disappoinment, even though she was excited to do the scene, but she knew it was stupid and bad writing. Even someone as young and inexprienced as Maisie could see what hacks D&D were at writing.
Shes not even that young or inexperienced she's an adult with adult opinions and this is the worst writing in the world it's not that hard to notice how terrible it is. Especially if you're part of it
"Also, make sure the flame-throwing trebuchets go in FRONT, outside the walls, so they will be overrun." "Seriously, do NOT put them inside the castle walls where they would keep being useful until the walls were breached."
@@@kikima258 They don't understand how walls work, period. Houses still have walls for the same reason: so you'll know where people could come into the house. Sacrificing an entire story arc, absolutely destroying character arcs and throwing 7 seasons of buildup out the window for a subversive "you go girl" moment. Disgraceful.
@@Kazserah yeah Arya killed all the family members of the house that DESTROYED her house, a plot she deserved to bring to a closure, what more did they want from her to be the superman of the series destroying every bad guy, this was a disaster
I'm pissed about everything, but the destruction of Sam's story arc pisses me off the most. What happened to the years of him gaining courage, learning how to fight despite his fear, and becoming a man who's willing to fight and die to protect his family and friends? Now he's just a big coward baby bawling in the middle of the chaos who's too insignificant for the enemy to even bother to kill.
I wasn't for a “you go girl” it was because, and I am using the words of D&D here “Jon killing the Night king was too predictable”. This reminds me of a quote I don't know where it is from “when you write your Story, so it ends up that the butcher did, but the readers figure it out before you finish the Story, so you rewrite it as the butler did it instead, you just end up ruining your own story”.
When you realize that the Night King could have just kept sending blizzards for a week or two and forced Jon and co to either abandon the castle to avoid a large chunk of the army from freezing to death/deserting, or forced Jon's army into marching from the castle to fight him at a location of the Night Kings choosing. Sun Tzu's The Art of War 101.
He didn't even need to send blizzards, he could have just done a traditional siege and starved the defenders out. Whitewalkers are perfect for conducting a siege. They don't need to be fed or paid, they don't get demoralized from long campaigns away from home, and they don't die off from disease.
we didnt even see a winter. Stannis' men froze to death but the night king who "brings the cold storm" didnt even do sheeeeeett. not one person froze to death in the "LONG WINTER" because it all happened in ONE fruckingggg night. WTFFF
What infuriates me is that a large story in an omnibus handles an undead invasion like this a million times better than a multi-million dollar show. Gotrek and Felix, while set in the Warhammer Fantasy world with vastly different magic systems and technology (mostly renaissance stuff for the main human faction) still understands the very basics of this kind of this shit, AND actually dives into some nuances of how a siege like this would go. This shouldn't have been a one-episode thing. Winterfell is a massive fortress with countless defenders and some of the most brilliant minds in the setting. This should have been a long, drawn out siege of attrition, where the Night King is sending wave after wave of his minions against the walls of a fortress that the defenders have spent weeks preparing. It should have been a series of brutal, violent battles where the defenders spent day after day throwing back countless waves of wights, fighting to the brink of exhaustion while the dragons wear themselves to the bone trying to burn as many of the wights as possible. The defenders employ every defensive tactic under the sun: oil, spike traps, spear walls, holding key choke points. Everything. But the wights just keep on coming. Each character would get their moment to shine contributing to the defense while trying to work under the pressure of the fate of the world on their shoulders. But nope.
@@Aredel The night king could and should have just starved and freeze them. He has all the time in the world. Every dead defender will be a new zombie. So it's a matter of time, a week max. 5 minutes of this ridiculous siege was way too long, let alone 45.
@@ronhoek69 The problem is that Winterfell had been preparing for that kind of situation for months. They have the granaries and wood stocks to wait out a siege for years if needed. Massive blizzards wouldn't take their toll for a while.

@@DamienDarksideBlog I'm glad for you too, just imagine this. Huge villain that is neglected by everyone but the Night's Watch until the end, is shown to be almost unstoppable, episode before the big fight is pure dialogue and sadness and everyone saying everyone is going to die. Then the fight happens and 2 characters die and the entirety of the enemy force is destroyed and the symbolism the whole show was trying to push (throne not important, it's life vs death) is destroyed with them. Btw this was built up over 9 years...
They had TWO fire-breathing dragons AND a fire-witch Melisandre AND an army of archers AND trebuchets with fire projectiles sitting above high fortifications that can ALL deploy mass fire at distance that solves both the darkness problem but more importantly is the enemy's EXACT weakness. The humans had every perfect counter to the undead army in the history of the world yet somehow they got spanked until Deus Ex Machina kills the night-king. Yes it subverted my expectations. I expected the episode to be at least competent.
Even as someone who doesn't personally like Game Of Thrones, I just feel absolutely horrible for all the fans... The amount of passion and structure that went into this video as well as the next two is just mind-blowing to me. The fans, hell even the cast deserved so much better. I remember being vaguely aware of the audience pushback towards the end of GOT's run on HBO, but these in depth videos on why fans are so pissed never fail to leave me with my mouth hanging open. What D&D did to the 8th season is up there with Rian Johnson's decisions in directing in the Last Jedi from a pure character assassination standpoint. And this is just the episode where it started to go downhill, its fucking nothing compared to how much they dropped the ball in the next episodes following this. D&D's decision to speed through and wrap up this final season as quickly as possible so they could bug out and work on Star Wars was fucking absurd. I honestly can't believe HBO just allowed them to get away with ending the series like that considering how massive a show it was for them, and the tons of material and plot glossed over that probably could have kept the show going for another full season or two.
The Night is unsatisfying and full of fans that will make excuses for this episode till they call you Nazi. Dumdum dada dumdum. Only drunks in Burlington Bar will love this regardless of it making no sense as the feels and visuals and themes. Pretty colours glug glug.
Now that the initial rage and bewilderment has faded, and I've completed the 7 stages of grief, I come back to this video whenever I need a good laugh. This 30 minute video made in like one day after the episode has more thought and critical thinking put into it than a multi million dollar production run by two neanderthals with hundreds of people behind them. Seasons 1-4: "When you play the game of thrones you either win or you die!" Seasons 5-8: "When you play the game of thrones you either win, die, or get constantly, conveniently deus-ex-machina'd by David Benioff and Dan Weiss." This episode saddened me deeply.

The worst part of this whole ordeal is that this episode is not even the last nail in the coffin. There were still 3 episodes left before the show completely died.
Not five minute in and this is already the most incompetent game of Total War Warhammer I've ever seen. It seems they forgot which side of the map they were on and set their units up *backwards* .
That's not all they put there artillery right in the front so when the cavalry dies the artillery may deal enough close range damage to end them only to run out of ammo at the last second. The fucking Greenskins are better strategists than these people cause at least when they charge they are smart enough to ensure that some "sneaky git" is going to be right behind and ruin you and they are smart enough to launch squigs at you. I'd honestly have preferred him to bolt it to the Crypts when they fell back.

But nope.

Jon’s scream wasn’t at the dragon it was at the idiot writers and the fact that he wasted almost a decade on this show.

For me the show died in the arse after season 5
