  • We've already seen some fairly successful Assassin's Creed ports for Nintendo Switch, but the arrival of The Ezio Collection completes the classic pre-Unity set. Just how well do these conversions stack up against the last-gen consoles - and indeed the Xbox 360 originals? Oliver Mackenzie reports.

    I recently bought a PS3 Slim, it was my dream when i was a kid and now i was able to get it, it came with the 3 ezio games, ffxiii and GoW ascension, good pack for 150 euros (including a TV), and i noticed immediately the vast difference between the original AC games compared to the remasters, i personally like the increase on texture resolution, but for the rest they broke the atmosphere completely.
    Back then they made the games working around the limitations of each system, and thanks to that they had to get creative when working on the visual aspect of the games, that ended up with these really marked designs that looked really good, since nowdays they have such huge amount of resources many don't tend to think about how they made games 10 or 15 years ago and when working on projects like this, they tend to break the original atmosphere of the games...

      @@youtubeaccount7544 The only plausible GPU you could get for cheap would be some used HD 6970, 6950, 7970, 7950, or some GTX 470/480/570/580, maybe some GTX 700 series if you are lucky, everything past that point is seriously overpriced, building a PC right now sucks, if you only wanna play games, the cheapest option is either a Steam Deck, a XBOX Series S, or a Nintendo Switch, maybe a Digital PS5, but at 80$ per game and no backwards compatibility via disc the entire used market goes through the window for you.
      Maybe some ryzen APU could work for 1080p or 720p, the ryzen 5600g should let you play all AC games for example, the PS3 era ones basically maxed at 1080p running at 60fps with some dips here and there, the unity and forward at 30fps with heavy dips under 10fps at some points even on low settings, and that would mean a good 450+€ on just a mobo+cpu+ram (you seriously want at least 16GB since you will be sharing the ram with the integrated GPU), not taking into account the 40€ cheap case, the 50+€ minimum quality PSU, disc drives, and don't forget periferals, mouse, keyboard and monitor.
      Honestly speaking, if you get a PS2, or a PS3, a Wii or a Wii U and you softmod or pirate it i wouldnt even blink, right now it's a good time to grab one of those consoles, mod and pirate the hell out of it.

      There is more wrong with ezio collection, he failed to mention the new yellow piss filter in ezio collection of brother hood which makes the lighting look much worse than the original. Also when you climb to a high vantage point at night, all of the light sources are gone in a ezio collection of AC2 and brotherhood, which completely ruins the vibe and gives the city a eerie dead feel. Also there were shadow glitches in Venice in AC 2 where shadows weren't rendering properly. The bloom is an aesthetic choice and adds to the dreamy historic vibe of these games. I don't know about you, but if I'm travelling, I prefer to carry a lightweight system that "only" plays games at 720p30 but can do it for 4+ hours, rather than a bulky, heavy system that plays games at 720p45 yet barely lasts 2 hours. My guess for the audio mixing issues is not due to performance, but rather due to an aggressive loudness compensation/volume normalization filter. The port developer likely did this because the expectation was that most hours will be played with these versions on the small, relatively tinny speakers on the Switch, so they compressed the audio mix to make it more on-the-go-friendly. It would be nice if, when docked, it would return to a more dynamic audio mixing, like the original games or the Xbox One/PS4 Ezio Collection mix. Alternatively, it would be fantastic if there were settings to change to a more dynamic mix if you are using wired/wireless headphones.

    The very real possibility of hardware DLSS 2.x support in a Switch 2 is exciting. It's no longer a pipe dream, since Nvidia has the Ampere mobile parts and laptop parts now. They also contain optional extensions for prior gen back compat. - including Maxwell era. So a Super Switch/Switch 2 could absolutely feature the mobile Ampere part or hybrid mobile/laptop APU part, and support Switch 1 back compat. along with full DLSS support.
    Performance/battery saving for sure.
    And then we have an interesting possibility with the Switch 2 dock. If the docking bus bandwidth interface between handheld and dock is sufficiently wide, you could include a small array of specific Tensor/CU cores in the dock to enable stronger ML/AI for DLSS. I.e., 1080p to 4K reconstruction towards 4K display output.
    Anyway, lots of opportunities there, and the manufacturing cost will be reasonable by the time Nintendo is ready to move forward with a Switch successor.

    • @uncouthliyouth4486
      @uncouthliyouth4486 Před 2 lety

      AMD just has no real counterpart to DLSS. You really can't run Ray Tracing at both high framrates and higher resolutions without it. That's why I haven't been impressed with these new consoles. Cyberpunk for instance can only run RT shadows losing it's intended aesthetic. Even regular rastureized games on the new unreal engine are going to struggle to hit anything near 4k if they choose to cater to people who expect atleast 60fps in every game which seems likely. I've yet to see any impressive looking game without compromises from these new consoles. Spiderman Miles Morales being the only exception so far. With Nvidia in their pocket not only should they implement in the next switch but they should make a non portable powerhouse leveraging Nvidia and market it as a true next gen console, because we all know sony and microsoft will go the enhanced console route mid gen. Nintendo can swoop in and take the hardcore audience as well.

      If good FSR 2.0 implementations can claw back (typical) 20-30% performance overhead, that could help accommodate better coverage of ray-tracing without collapsing frame-rate targets -- and still look pretty damn good.

    So to summarize. The 360 is the best version. The Xbox one version is the second best and the switch version is the worst.

    imo id much rather have the og version running stable and well with just some ui and qol tweaks over a downported version of the upgraded version, i feel like it couldve been better if they just did a 60fps version of the 360 game but that’s probably just me

    Real Assassins creed....now we just need AC1 remastered. and a return to the roots but i know that will never happen. atleast u can play ezio trilogy on switch now, but with steamdeck might be best to wait and play em on there at 720p 60fps.

    The destruction of AC2's art style was enough to deter me from the collection back when it dropped for the Xbox One and PS4, since it is my favorite AC game. Disappointed to see it became even worse with Switch.

      @@Leo-zero711 I've got a high-ish end PC and a PS5, but a stable 30fps on switch games still looks fine to my eyes. I can't stand 30fps on PS5, but something about the smaller screen and no 60fps option for comparison makes 30fps on switch perfectly palatable. Hell, I even played a fair chunk of Doom 2016 and found that enjoyable.

      @JaceAce Před 2 lety +2

      @@stupendously_silly I recently beat the game on Switch.
      Not really sure how bad it was pre-patch but
      Performance wise, I give it 7.5/10 or even 8/10
      There are still a lot of bugs which frustrated me during gameplay.
      *SPOILERS*
      For example the Father and Son mission, where Connor has to disguise himself as one of the mercenary.
      After killing and looting the mercenary, the marker brought me back to the area where I left Haythem, however the marker indicates underground. I spent nearly 10mins before looking it up on google only to find it a bug.
      Then the Charles Lee Chase scene, at one point, I caught up too quickly to Charles and he just stood there with no interaction.
      Only later to restart it and find out that I had to let him go ahead of me to trigger a cutscene.
      The homestead mission where I had to rescue this person from the cliff after killing the mercenaries, triggered no interactions. Only because I killed them too close to the boulder.
      There are quite a few more but overall, I enjoyed the game. Hence 7.5/10. it's worth the money, if you're looking to go on an AC marathon during quarantine. I know I have.
      AC4 on the otherhand, freaking amazing. 10/10 no issues whatsover.
