Assassin's Creed 3 Switch: Last-Gen Port or Full Remaster? - PS4/Wii U Graphics Comparison!

  • Delayed as it is we're glad to have Assassin's Creed 3 on Switch in hand - as perhaps the most ambitious handheld port for the series to date. It's a distinct upgrade over Wii U in resolution at least - rising from a native 720p to 1080p, while Switch is docked. And yet many other issues surround this release that make it hard to fully recommend. Tom explains why.

God of War 4's soundtrack is probably one of my favorites in recent memory, Uncharted and The Last of Us have great music, then there's stuff like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild (wish it had more classic tracks but it's still has very good quality music), Witcher 3, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Persona 5, Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, Octopath Traveler, Soulcalibur 6, and the list goes on and on. It's always a challenge trying to decide if getting the Switch version of a game is the best idea. If it's on multiple systems, it's pretty much a guarantee that the Switch version is going to be inferior. And yet it's still just as expensive, if not more expensive. And even then, you might end up having to download part of the game because it doesn't all fit on the card, which means worrying about running out of data storage space on your system. Yeah, it's annoying having to install games onto the hard drive on a PS4, but you can always reinstall the game from the disc again later. If extra game code for a Switch game is no longer available online at some point in the future, you're just out of luck. Though to be fair, many modern games are basically broken at launch anyway, so if you can't download the necessary patches for them, you're pretty much screwed either way. This is the nature of gaming in the modern era. But I digress.
Literally the only reason a person should ever get the Switch version of a game is if they either have great difficulty finding opportunities to sit in front of the TV and play, or if you spend a lot of time waiting at various places away from home where a laptop would not be a viable option. Even if a laptop is technically viable in a given situation, they still tend to be less convenient. You need a fairly wide, flat surface to set the laptop on, wake your laptop up, launch your game, and get out your controller, possibly needing to connect it. With the Switch, you take the Switch out, wake it up, and start playing. No flat surface required. As for the former situation, some people just don't get to have a TV to themselves very often or they simply need to be able to move from room to room, which is not something most consoles excel at.
For me personally, if a new game comes out on the Switch and some other system and the prices are the same, I usually try to figure out how well the Switch version runs. I find graphical downgrades acceptable, but if the framerate takes a hit or there is some other noticeable trade-off, I'll usually go with the beefier console version. I made an exception for Trials Rising just because it feels like such a portable friendly game. The lower framerate does bother me at times though. For other games, like Mega Man 11, getting the Switch version was a no brainer, since it wasn't exactly a graphics intensive title. Why not get the version I can play anywhere? This also applies to other games that aren't going to push the hardware. But then price usually becomes an issue because you can often find insane discounts on those kinds of games on PC, but not on Switch. I did get the Capcom Beat-em-up Bundle cheaper on Switch than on PC though, so it can happen. I just find myself wishing that I could somehow link my Steam account with my Switch so that any games that I own on Steam could be played on my Switch for free. I'd say that's just a pipe dream, but Valve did team up with Sony at one point. I don't remember how it worked, but Steam was on PS3 in some fashion and it allowed owners of Portal 2 on Steam to play the PS3 version without buying an extra copy. Side thought: how cool would it be if players were given the option of purchasing a digital version of a game they already own for a different system for a small fee? I'd be down with that. I think it's something that publishers ought to consider. They will definitely make more money getting me to pay full price for two copies of the same game on different platforms, but the likelihood that I'm going to buy a game twice, just to have it on another platform, is slim. So they could at least make a few extra bucks on people who can't decide if they prefer portability or graphics.
Then again, I almost never play the Switch away from home. But I love knowing that I could if I wanted to. And I also simply enjoy being able to play the system in any room of my house. Super Mario Maker 2 might be the perfect game for that sort of "play anywhere" style.
As for whether someone should buy a Switch in the first place, it's going to come down to how much you want that portability and how much you like the exclusives. I bought the Switch just to play Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. No regrets.

In reality though, this is highly unlikely to happen, the Switch was their attempt to combine their historically successful handheld and their recently flagging console markets, so given that the hardware has sold so well, I don't see them going back to separate markets once the 3DS finally fizzles out.

I still like the lightning of the original a lot more. Skin tone especially is way too bright with the new lightning, and many environments weren't built with appropriate light sources so the new lightning system makes scenes appear empty, the lightning looks unnatural or even missing in many places. So even though some surfaces are more accurate, like the metal wall in the van which actually looks like metal now, everything else looks wrong and people especially don't mesh well with the new lightning.

They should’ve made the second game a download to preserve audio. Or not. Whole Bethesda games and the Witcher 3 run on Switch (and not just the ones built on a 15 year old engine, but Doom and Wolfenstein as well) ,and they don’t have all these problems. Seems like they didn’t really try with this port.

You can have a five-minute-long music track that barely exceeds 1MB in size and it still sounds decent. It's likely that Ubisoft's games still rely on WAV files on their games and they might have just lowered the bitrate in order to both save space and rush development.

But we all know that even low bitrate uncompressed wav files sounds shatty .

I have a feeling it might have been an issue with the old console code made for the PowerPC CPUs in the last-gen consoles not playing nice with the Switch, so it wasn't a matter of resolution holding back performance. If a CPU/engine bottleneck is going to keep you at a given framerate regardless of resolution, mine as well crank it up.

Ubisoft should've released AC3 and AC Liberation on Switch as two seperate releases bundled in one price. The two-in-one cartridge strategy clearly forced their hands to pare back some stuff that needn't even be pared back. i.e: Sound Compression. Not to mention Ubisoft was clearly trying to save budget by cramming two games in that 16GB cartridge.
I'd sooner take a blurry smooth 600p 30fps Assassin's Creed with a few extra visual fx rather than this 1080p mess.
