Moog Minimoog Model D | First pass experimental ambient sound design

- I've wanted a Minimoog for some time, but it was 'always out of my price range' (and it still is - 0% financing for the win?). When the new version was released at $5000, I laughed and said, well, that's not going to happen. After the mass layoffs at Moog - I guess I was somewhat compelled to get one. I'm sure this is, by itself, a fairly irrational reason to get it. At the time, I didn't know (or maybe it's still not 100% certain) whether Moog would make more Minimoogs in the US. Originally the thought/fear was that everything would be produced elsewhere. So yes, that played probably an unhealthy role in my decision making process. I've heard the Mini would still be made in the US. I guess I'm not entirely proud to say that maybe by buying it under InMusic, I wasn't doing Moog any favors. I honestly don't know.
If you remember when I got my Sequential Prophet 10, I remember being let down. I wasn't sure it was as good as I thought it should be for the price. While I have come around, it was a major fear I had after buying the Minimoog. I'm quite happy to report that these misgivings were not in my head at all when I first turned on the Mini. Of course, there are some things that confused me. First, I didn't hear any sounds and that made me nervous (turns out my mixer wasn't on). It does take a little reading in the manual to know what switches and knobs are doing exactly what. It's less immediate than one would think on first glance.
It's hard to know what to say. I don't really want to fetishize the instrument - but I think that it's a bit impossible. It's a cool synth. It's one of the most iconic synths - so in that aspect, I will fail this immediately. But it does LOOK and FEEL very impressive... and elegant. In a way that the Matriarch doesn't. The keybeds seem the same though. Getting to the sound - it's got such a rich sound. I would love to A/B it with my Matriarch (which has other benefits such as paraphonic mode, arp/seq, patching), but I think the pure tone from the Minimoog is better (again, I want to test this).
So what I did here was send the output to the Strymon Volante and then added Eventide Blackhole VST. I didn't prepare anything except the original sound. Honestly, I didn't even know what I was going to play throughout. This is just me fiddling around after playing it for 5 minutes to get my bearings straight.
Before I forget. The first sound you hear is actually just the filter with some noise modulation on it. I later add oscillators.
I hope you enjoy.

Yes! Please...an A/B with the Matriarch! A few years ago I rescued a Minimoog Voyager Performer Edition from my friend's pawnshop. A guy had been using it like an ATM machine for almost a year. They kept telling him "You need to sell this to Bill". Finally the gentleman did. I bought it directly from the person (this is not your stereotypical heartless pawnshop!). The guy came in and finally said he wanted to sell it so they contacted me. I know its not a Model D but the Voyager is mind blowing in its own right. I'm the blessed owner of 5 Moog synths now.
Yeah, that would be a great video... I should definitely do it. How... does one use a synth as an 'atm machine'?
I've heard good things about the Voyager, but don't know much about the PE version you're speaking of. I think the Voyager would sound closer to the Matriarch, but I could be wrong. I haven't really looked too in depth between them.
The model D is glorious. Just received mine a few weeks ago.
My motivation to buy a 2022 reissue was the demise of Moog. ( I think the probability of Moog surviving in some form we recognize with InMuaic at the helm is low ).
By the way, I hope you don’t regret the P10. These purchases are so complicated by our dopamine saturated brain state at the time of purchase I find it best to reserve judgement until 6 months or more after the purchase. Many instruments I found to be “meh” were the opposite of a letdown after my brain chemistry calmed down. It takes time to form a genuine opinion, at least for me.
Well done.
My motivation was the same! I was a little bummed that mine has a knot right on the front panel, but I get that it’s wood :/ just gonna live with it. And I ruined the manual right when I took it out. It wasn’t great.
Marvelous. Congrats on the Mini.
Thanks!
This is so good 😭
Thanks :D
Lovely stuff mate! I just picked up a very used 1978 Minimoog and currently restoring it ;)
Oh nice!!! Glad to hear it will get fixed up!
Hurrah! The prophecy has been fulfilled! The spirit of Bob Moog rejoices! 🙌
Hah! I have high doubts that Bob Moog would really care about my musings :/ but I for sure appreciate that he made this synth. It is fantastic. Definitely a great purchase.
I'm glad I found your channel; I get to live vicariously through you! The way you film your ditties just adds to the immersion... it always feels like I have a seat at the end of your piano bench.
Hey thanks! I'm definitely wishing I could do more, or do it better, but with two dogs who don't get along and two kids, my life is way too hectic for more. Thanks for stopping by :)
exactly my thoughts :)
These are classic for a reason, glad to hear what magic you’re making with it
Thanks :) I love it
Fantastic! I'm blessed by almost never feeling even a hint of envy, but I gotta admit that's a lifetime companion I would love to enjoy. Congratulations, man. Gorgeous tone, filter envelopes smooth as butter, rich bass, ethereal noise generator, mod-wheel filter sweeps. . . I can listen to your ambient play on the Model D for hours. Seriously, great purchase! :)
That is indeed a blessing. I want to tell myself I'll never buy another synth. But I'm pretty sure I said that after I got my last synth. And the one before that. And the one before that.
The perfect Synth for you 🌞. A pure instrument.
Thanks! They're probably all perfect synths, lol, except the Akai AX80. That's an exception.
So glad you got it
Thanks :)
Fantastic - thank you!
Thanks!
Oh, you got one. Congrats!
Hah, yep!!!
Love the Model D sound! Great jam!
Thanks a lot!
You are welcome! I love listening to your your synth explorations and adventures! 🎶@@MIDERA
You got it! Nice!!
lol, yup.
wonderful!
Thanks :)
👏👏👏👏 Thanks man
Thank you :)
Great !
Thanks!
I think it's a smart buy... maybee the last handcrafted Model D to grab.
And i think some synth are definitely a "music instrument" by themself... impossible to recreate or feel by other Synth (yeah i look at you my lovely Nonlinear C15...hope one day i get the money for this one 😁)
Yeah, maybe it will be! Hard to know the future. It sounds like it won’t be built anywhere but the US for now. That could change.
E. Soundtrack (Ambient, Sci-Fi, Cosmic / también utilizadas en el New Age)...una de las líneas mas antiguas de la Música Electrónica Clásica, como las producciones de Bebé & Louis Barron 👍
My name is Giovanni Giorgio but everybody calls me...the father, founder and pionner of EDM and the Modern Electronic / The Sound Of The Future.
Thanks :)
😎 Can’t wait til mine rolls in. Here’s to making “bad” financial decisions together 🤣
I should have mentioned that aspect of it… that you, who I expected would tell me not to get it, would in fact, do the opposite.
@@MIDERA It didn’t help that I was debating the same thing 😂
@@Heavenly3lues Or did it help!?!?!
@@MIDERAwell… now you have a Minimoog, and I will in a few days!
🤣😉
Lol thanks!
This video is not helping me in deciding I really shouldn’t get it 😂
Ha! Funny, I think this is an awful demo of it. I have better ones IMO. But what else do you have? Hard to say what it will do for you. It’s a great synth for sure. But it’s certainly not the end all of synths.
This is a really beautiful video; you’ve created some gorgeous voices here. My 2018 reissue just arrived today and I’m over the moon. I was telling myself for years that my Moog One can do everything this can, but this is an entirely different, awe-inspiring, beautiful beast. I love how much it’s not like the modern Moogs. A 50-year icon for a reason!
