Yamaha AN1x soundscape - Across the sea

- I can't tell you how many times I recorded this. I don't know why - but normally I find the AN1x to sound so good, but I kept getting clipping. I was probably using too much of the internal FX or something. Anyway, it wasn't fun. Finally I went to a different sound and used that (i.e., the one you're hearing here). I used external reverb on it. It just wasn't working nicely with the built-in today for whatever reason. I think actually it was the delay, the delay was clipping. Sigh...
Eventide Blackhole VST used for reverb
One of my biggest gear regrets is selling this synth back in the "all I need is virtual instruments" phase of the early 2010's. I recently picked up a dirt cheap Yamaha Reface CS, which is considered a "descendant" of this sound engine, and I am loving it's dead simple architecture and forced creativity (lack of patch storage, restricted modulations, etc), but it's REALLY making me want an AN1X again.
Reface CS seems great - I'd like to try it some time, but I don't think it will give me that same feeling of "big plastic synth with terrible resolution of faders" that the AN1x gives me. Some of my push encoders don't even work on mine now. I guess I should replace them. Not sure if they broke during shipment or if they'd always just been that way.

Thanks! I made this like… 2-3 weeks ago and honestly hated it. I haven’t even listened to it recently, just posted it and assumed it was as bad as the day I made it (but wasted enough time that I ought to post it anyway).
It reminds me sonically of the SX-240 for some reason… ah well.

I sometimes come back and listen to something I didn't really feel was very good, 6 month after uploading......and am ofter surprised by how much I like it given a revisit......
@@willswitchcraft Yeah - I definitely think everything I've done in the past is much better than what I do now. This stuff is no exception. I feel my soundscapes are extremely boring and 'low quality' but... I post them because they're pretty easy to do, requiring so little effort.... but It's been fun to see how it affects viewership and subscribers. I went from 50 up to 150 since I've started posting every day or two. Sucks to have to do that to get 'growth' and I don't need it. Eventually I won't be able to keep this up, or won't want to, and my numbers will slump again, as it always does. And that's ok.

@willswitchcraft yep. I understand that. This stuff isn’t that important in any scheme of life - but it’s been fun for me anyway, so I keep at it. Fun to explore these synths when I’ve got some extra time. And I’m motivated to actually do it. I have like a backlog of 10 videos to post from June still!

Definitely! At least with my kids it forces me out of my studio!!!! Thankfully :) Like yesterday, we went flying a kite. Hadn't done that in a long time, but it was well worth it!

I'm so glad you are putting out these soundscapes so often. I enjoy listening to them at work, sometimes on repeat. Could you share some about your musical background here or in a video sometime?
Hey thanks! I enjoy listening to these when I’m working too, lol! So, my musical background is basically that I have none. When I was 5 I played piano, would sit down in front of it and just find all the notes that sounded good together. I kind of just still do that. I played trumpet in 6-7 grade, but hated it. Around that time I started playing guitar and just learned how to play a lot of my favorite music by ear. Then I joined band and jazz bands to play bass guitar. Eventually I wrote a bunch of rock music. In grad school I got tired of how hard it was to write that so I got some synths and sequencers and figured I’d use this stuff to perform live… didn’t really do that much, but now I am here.
I’d like to be better, but I never know where to start.

Ahhh the wonders of internal gain staging on digital synths, right? :D
DSI has entered the chat. Most of their synths have pretty bad gain staging. The Prophet 08 would clip in weird ways too! But yeah, the AN1x is no slouch in this area. Hard to fault it though, I was running those FX pretty hard to get the feeling I wanted, just unfortunately had to drop some of them to make it work :/ Ah well.
I’m assuming this is a patch from your custom AN1X patch set. Which patch is it?
