The Lava That Flowed Into Grindavík And The Fence That Didn't Burn

- I still don't understand how the fence didn't burn down but It was very fortunate that the lava did not take the fourth house during eruption number 5 in January. One of them was totally submerged in lava and can't be seen. This singe fissure opened up wishing the new lava barriers that you can see in the background and they are still not ready since it was decided recently to extend them around the complete village.

That is the saddest video I have seen yet - all those dreams and hopes destroyed. Yet it was also fascinating to see the lava formations and their destructiveness up close. The music was particularly affecting.

Yeah, the fence gets me every time I see it in a video. Especially in contrast with the burnt-out husks of the washing machines next has-been-a-door
I wonder if the fence is metal; or this is due to the cold wind strongly blowing off the cold ocean.
It’s a good reflection of how tough the Icelandic people are.
Maybe it should become a symbol for the strong Icelandic people.
The lava flow was extremely slow in this area so the lava is most likely pushing cold and harden lava in front of the flow that is not radiating much heat. If it was fresh lava this will burn because the heat radiation is then much greater.
@@Verndadur of course, but I still think that this event is a great symbol of Icelandic strength: they are so strong and determined that they can stand up to *lava!

I really hope that footage will be provided by Gylfi, because the camera work of Shawn is dreadful, honestly speaking. So is his way of storytelling. But he sure is a skilled geological expert

@@e.k.4508 Each have their own individual strengths. It is great to hear from both of them. They each have a lot of knowledge, both are open-minded, use their eyes and think, and more importantly both are great at sharing their knowledge and thoughts with others.
so weird how the cooled lava just looks like a pile of dirt instead of being smooth and rippled
I have thought the same thing. For some reason, I've associated cooled lava with an obsidian or glassy finish.
Look up the two basic lava types. Their names are Hawaiian in origin.
@@LordKaladar , obsidian is a rare phenomenon, compared to P & A.
Pahoehoe is the smooth and rippled type of solidified lava, which is a consequence of low viscosity of the lava. Higher viscosity, and it solidfies in blocky form like this, known as 'a'a. You see both kinds in Iceland, but I would say in general 'a'a is more common. I draw similar conclusions from places like Iceland, New Zealand, Etna, Azores, etc

All of this is so true for me also. I too watched it happen, non stop, and am amazed at the fortitude of the Icelandic people. This beautiful video thoughtfully brings the reality of living with the horrors of volcanos to light in a way that also highlights the contrasts of planet that we depend on.
As someone who was also recently displaced due to a natural disaster (Forest Fires in Alberta that kept most Northerners out of their homes all Summer) I can relate to the stress of not knowing if your house will be standing when you return... I hope for the best for all if Iceland but especially G-Vick... Great video as always. It's been both fascinating and heartbreaking to see this natural occurrence in such high resolution...

I thought I recognised it, then I realised it had a very similar melody to a techno song that they overplayed on the radio the year I started my carpentry apprenticeship. I hadn’t heard the song since, but brings back a few memories! Look up Wilkinson - “dirty love” if you’re keen!

Oh wow. Just a stunning video. I don't think I had seen a shot which showed the crack in the ground running between the fissures. That whole length along the magma dyke is just split and ready to go at any time, huh? And just 70 years ago tectonic theory wasn't even widely accepted. Blows my mind. Another amazing video. I remember watching the live feeds as the lava hit these houses. It is just so sad that people have lost their homes and livelyhoods in Grindavik
Yes, this is just the most graphic scene but the sadness is harder to see, but it is there in many forms

Very poignant video with the beauty of nature yet how destructive. Very sad to see people’s homes and then I thought at least no one was physically harmed and it could have been far, far worse. So we all breathe again until the next volcanic event. I really like your drone footage because it shows the scale and nature of lava itself, which cannot be seen purely from static camera footage. Seeing this place makes me so grateful for all the green things that grow where I live.
Watching that lava push into some structures and not others reminded me of tornadoes, which can cut a swath through neighborhoods or somehow dodge a house or a tree. To me it's a reminder of the power of Nature and the randomness of life.

Beautiful video, quite up-beat music makes us think about the wonders of Nature. It was sad that those three houses were destroyed by the lava, but one of the owners said that they had not even moved in yet so they did not lose a house they had many memories about. The owners of those houses also got the insurance by now, unlike the rest of Grindavik.
Seeing the fissures against the stark realities for some people was heartbreaking for me. I know what it's like to have to wait and see what Mother Nature will or will not do. Regardless, while some are waiting, others already know...and seeing the remnants of peoples lives is incredibly moving. I appreciate very much how poignantly you captured the sentiments, both visually and musically. Stay safe out there...and God bless...

The lava lies as a black mass in the landscape, but Grindavik has been lucky this time. Thank you for this video and all the remarkable details.
At the end of the flow furthest from the town there is a prominent cone, it's very lumpy in close ups. Is this a "spatter cone" or does it form by some other means?

It looks like the fence offered enough open space for outgassing that the solidifying and cooling of the lava there happened faster. Fast enough for the wood not catching fire.
I fave made this suggestion before: Make fences of steel tube that will have water running through them. This will help stopp lava flows and may even become something like an embedded geothermal energy source. I think it would work.
