Bad News - Volcanoes Around Reykjavik Seem To Be Waking Up

- It's awful news that seismic activity indicates that other volcanic systems are waking up on the Reykjanes peninsula. The Krísuvík system seems to be awake already like iv'e mentioned since 2022 and the Sulfur Mountain System was teasing us just days ago. This long update covers therefore the big picture and my thoughts since iv'e been mentioning this exact scenario from time to time. This will be covered in even more depth soon.

Not only Iceland but Europe and the Northern Hemisphere if we get a volcano that has a large, sustained ash plume. It could throw air travel into chaos if the plume drifts into key flight paths.
@@Benson_aka_devils_advocate_88 Considering Reyjkanes Peninsula usually has rifts, there is little risk for that. The explosive eruptions are under glacier or in the sea in different systems.
@@Benson_aka_devils_advocate_88 Yes...caused quite a mess the last time it happened. It affects everyone...business travelers, tourists, commercial freight...no one flies anywhere...from the little weed whackers to the jumbo jets.
Your reporting skills are just as exceptional as your footage. However, it really broke my heart to hear you say that the residents of Grindavik will be picking up their things and saying goodbye to their community for the last time. 😢
I can empathize to a degree, but I am not so foolish as to think I can fully understand the heartbreak the people of Grindavík must be suffering. I wonder if everyone was able to get pets and livestock to safety, but am afraid of the answer.
How much of the native flora and fauna has been destroyed? I fear that there were species of plants and animals already on the brink of extinction that are now lost forever.
This pale blue dot that we depend and reside on is ever-changing and succumbs to the ebb and flow of internal pressures from deep within. The fact that these changes are without prejudice or favoritism doesn't make it any less tragic or painful.
@@katiedotson704 The unrest in the area has been going on for a while and the town was evacuated already in November, people were hoping to be able to return but they would have evacuated their pets and livestock as well, I've heard it mentioned in other videos and it makes sense, you couldn't leave animals there on their own. Definitely if any were left, they will be taken away now that the people are leaving permanently. There's been no news of animals in danger. As for the flora and fauna, the lava flow was actually pretty small and didn't cover that big of an area so it's unlikely to have done damage to the local biodiversity - which has been through many such lava flows already throughout history.
Thanks for your interesting videos. I like the way you speak English. Nice evening from Germany.
Thank you! 😃
Das stimmt 😁
Me too, Dagmar! 😊
Very good luck Iceland!! If you need it most of the countries on this planet will help you! Please take care, ALL of you!!
Nice work, clear, calm and very educational for non- Icelandic people that want to understand the situation better.
Thank you very much :)
Gylfi I am sending prayers for the people of Iceland. Thank you and ❤ from 🇺🇸
🙏
Thank you Gylfi again for all you do let's hope that things calm Down and pray everyone stays safe
Thank you very much...
Nothing is going to calm down. People need to hurry and get away from this location. Same as Mount Saint Helens in Washington State in the United States! People don't want to listen. ❤❤
His information is based on scientific information. Widespread he says.
Better safe than sorry. Praying for the country, next thing you know it will be us again.(Washington State.)
Watching from Australia. We deal with bushfires and cyclones, you guys deal with bloody volcanoes! Stay safe mate.
Appreciated!
Thank you for the update. Praying that the people of Iceland make good and SAFE choices. 🙏
my choice is that it seems like a very good time to visit friends in Norway
They didn't listen when you talked about Grindavik a year ago. I sure hope they do now.
Who is they
@@tylerball665 The Grindavikians. They didn't listen
@@mkeysou812 But they did evacuate in a timely manner. Where was the problem? As far as I can see this was textbook and the optimal manner to do things.
Thanks for the update Gylfi ❤
I have become emotionally attached to Iceland and its people through your videos. Stay safe and take care of each other.
I was stationed there at the Keflavik Airport when it was NAS Keflavik in 1985. Most of the people spoke excellent English. Also, the Icelandic word for six is sex. Just the way the briefing started for the newly assigned personnel. Another interesting fact is that the shellfish they call lobsters look like large shrimp or crayfish in the US!
I guess this shows a word wide problem that people who run for office like the prestige and power, but have no idea how to run anything, while competent people don't run for office.
Never was a truer word spoken!!! You hit the nail on the head 🤯
Maybe in 100 years or 1000 years, wise people will become the leaders? But it really needs to happen now.
Voters don't want to hear what competent people have to say. People want to hear how some politician can fix everything while the people sit at home drinking a favorite beverage. The competent person that tells the people how everyone must work together, listen to the experts, and prepare for the future, gets no votes.
@@katiedotson704 exactly! Only very few voters are able to accept the shades of Grey that make up reality. They want simple answers and hear why they are the greatest people of all time. They dont want to hear "that depends..." or "that not simple..."
I invite you to find a politician who can negotiate with plate tectonics. A prime minister negotiates the human political spectrum. You seem to be looking for an emissary to Hephaestus.
this is true of professors also....
does the media come to Professor Thorvaldur Thordarson because he says all these things, or does Professor Thorvaldur Thordarson say those things because that's how the media come to him.... we cannot know this, but it could be a factor for sure.
in a Media age those with the most radical views become the more renown names, especially if one doesn't fear making a mistake (which is a necessity in any living hypothetical-science community)
everyone likes to be noticed.
The sad part for the residents of Grindavik is that while the government may release them from further mortgage payments they still lose what equity they built up and now have to start over somewhere else. There clearly is reason for continued concern. Thanks for the update Gylfi.
I was listening to an interview with the local Police commissions the other day, it's a lot of sadness among the people, worse than we hear in the media, leaving everything behind and the community as such as well. And thanks for watching
Amazing aerial footage. The landscape looks alive, you can feel it stirring.
Appreciated!
Thank you for the detailed update Gylfi! Quite scary how things are developing in the capital region!
I've been watching Iceland's evolving story since 2021 when 'Bob" 1st made an appearance. 'Bob' morphed into 'Nar', and became quite a show. By listening to the "experts" carefully through all of this, has painted a picture geologically speaking, that this is just the beginning. The recent group of eruptions, is the 1st of its' kind in about 800 years. And that Iceland goes through periods of 'dormancy' approximately every 700-800 years, and periods of eruptive activity of 1100-1300 years alternately. So it would seem that Iceland is in for quite a ride for the next 1,000 years or so. It would be essentially impossible to predict where a safe place might be. My heart goes out to you guys.
I am sorry for your country 😞 Gylfi it seems mother nature knows no limits at this point in time hope is all we have and I hope nothing more happens to your country....that said hope is a cruel mistress. Look forward to your next video take care be prepared from the Uk 🇬🇧 to 🇮🇸 Iceland
Yes mother nature has given us a lot, but we should have know we wouldn't be lucky forever
I can hear the concern in your voice. Bless you and your work and all the residents of Iceland. Much love from the mountains of Virginia ❤️
I greatly appreciate your measured, tempered approach to what Iceland is going through as a whole. This is one for civil planners to pay attention to. I look forward to your next update. I don't believe I've heard anyone discuss the big picture. Very thorough.
Thanks for the update Gylfi, I always come to your videos for a balanced and informed look at what’s happening in Iceland. Keep up the great work 👍
Stay safe Gylfi.
Thanks Gylfi. I like your videos and looking forward for more from you and take care of yourself and stay well healthy Greetings from me in Norway 🇳🇴
U are the only one that give information and updates and not speculated things. Ty for that!
I love your accent and calming voice. Great report.
Thank you very much....
A major mistake indeed. So unfortunate.I am keeping your lovely country and wonderful people in my thoughts. Best wishes from Florida, USA
Fantastic Update…spectacular historical and educational content..Thanks for all your hard work….Continued Success & Good Health….Northeastern On 🇨🇦
I listen to your analysis because you have been shown to be correct so many times now. The fact that you DO listen to a range of sources, and put their data into perspective makes you far better than any of the other journalists. I'm not Icelandic, I don't live there, but I am grateful to you for your diligent work. I hope the people of Iceland appreciate you too.
Thanks a ton, I know a bit about how our experts do things now :) some are more careful than others :)
This is disturbing news.
I'm sitting at home in Göteborg eating the first out of 24 cans off canned "lightly smoked Icelandic cod liver" on some hard bread with a few drops of my homemade pepper sauce, its good stuff! If there's a time to take more action than eating your top of the line export I'll gladly help the best I can;)
...anyway, thx for the update ❤❤❤/Göteborg
Thanks for the update. My great first vacation on Iceland ended a bit before the little eruption in July 2023. I cross my fingers that noone else of you get hurt.
Still watching! Stay safe! 😎✌️👍
I understand your concern and your distress. Maintain hope!
Thankyou for the update … be safe .❤. From 🏴
Thank you, I will
You give the most accurate and in depth reports I've ever seen about Iceland.
Greatly appreciated.
Much appreciated!
Thanks for the update. So much risk, affecting so many. The electric grid, during major east coast storms, could be shut down for a few hours and prevent long term outages (lasting days.)
But, they don't, and just wait until the power goes off, and say, "we'll fix it as we can." It's maddening.
How does shutting the power off prevent the winds from pulling poles down.
There may be poles that come down, but the biggest problem during storms is the loss of transformers. During an ice storm a few years ago, I could hear them popping like popcorn.
It takes a long time to replace all those transformers that would have been fine if the power was off until after the storm passed.
Larger transformers can take months to make, as well.
Thanks for the report. You are doing a great job and it’s appreciated. We have friends in Reykjavik. We are keeping everyone in our thoughts and prayers.
Lynn in Naples Fl.
Thanks Gylfi. Exceptional footage. Here is hoping that things calm down and that everyone stays safe. All the best from the UK
Praying for all the people of Iceland. I had the privilege of spending a year in your beautiful country in the mid 80's. I visited many of those small communities and it breaks my heart to see what they are going through. Stay safe. 🧡
I'm really hoping for the absolute best-case scenario, and safety for all of Iceland. It's a somber reminder that, while nature can be absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, it has an ugly side, too. Stay safe, Iceland!! Sending love from USA. ❤
Thank you, Gylfi, for keeping us updated, we visited in November just before the first eruption. I pray that you all stay safe and well 😢❤
Alles Liebe
This whole event in Grindavik seems to be having a domino effect on the rest of the systems. There's been widespread uplift in the Reykjanes Peninsula because of the intrusions in Svartsengi since October 25 last year. This seems to be turning out pretty had. And there I had hoped that any eruptions would be far enough from towns that there'd be some time to prepare.
“Hello, and the greetings from iceland” 😂😂😂 I always watch the first few seconds on repeat multiple times
Your reports are very much appreciated and from all around the world we’re hoping for the best for you all. Take care and keep safe, from Australia
Thank You for all you do to keep us informed. Sandy🐎
Thank you, Gylfi, for another interesting and informative update - with some wonderful views as well. Warm wishes, as always.
Prayers for you and your country. 🙏
Thank you for all that you do

It breaks my heart to think of how it must feel to be saying goodbye to the home you have lived in for years, after you took it from being just a house to a home full of memories. A nation's history is made up of individual experiences just like this, and I fervently hope that somehow all this pain and heartache can develop into a state of progress for Iceland and her people. Will the citizens of Grindavik who are in the fishing business still be able to moor their boats where they used to? I assume that there are primary processing facilities on site which will have to be moved elsewhere, but just having SOMETHING familiar to work around might help a little. As for your update, this is why you are my go-to guy for Iceland news. You cover not just the disasters but also the history and welfare of the.people, towns, and non-human creatures as well. You also wait long enough to have more of the "big picture" to relay to us outside Iceland rather than jumping on the nearest panic button. Your dry Icelandic sense of humor is always a delight. It has been nearly 40 years since I left Keflavik for the last time, and the memories of the locals who honored me with their trust and friendship I keep close to my heart. Take care, my friend.
Thank you for your servis and secrific to defend my country and our people
W8th ❤ from Grindavík
Thank you Gilfi for another informative video on the changing situation in Iceland. What concerning news. Praying for the best outcomes for you ❤
Thanks for the update Gylfi, I love your video work even if the news is not always happy! Thanks for the great maps, it’s easier for me to understand what’s going on. 💜💜
I so, enjoy your updates, keep them coming and be safe.
Thank you Gylfi and take care🍁
This is what people who find out TOO LATE about the land they live on, because they did not know about what SCIENCE IS LEARNING every day in this most exciting, cliff hanging (lol) era. As an American myself, the clutter of speculative BS around SCIENCE in any form is at its PEAK in these dark days in Oregon. Like many in the US, I turn to my NORTH STAR which is quality SCIENCE educators to keep me grounded. All puns intended! Thanks for 🎉❤ THIS video. Jenn Frykman, Oregon.
The volcano thar hit grindavik was considered unactive. There was not eruption for about 600 years I believe until now.
Thankyou for this report, Gylfi. Take care. Best to you and all in Iceland now.
Thank you for the updates, Gylfi - much appreciated 🇬🇧🏴
Welcome
❤ and thanks for keeping us updated and keeping it real❤
Always!
I’m looking forward to your videos about the volcanoes around Reykjavik. Your filming is beautiful; I enjoy seeing different parts of Iceland.
Thank you for the update.
Thanks for the update. Iceland is beautiful. Stay safe. Please keep us informed.
Thank you again Gylfi for your great work and your reports and videos!
Thanks again!
We do appreciate the thought and effort you put into this channel. It has been such a reliable source of information. Greetings from the currently very rainy “sunshine” state of Northern California.
I'm in Southern California. We're not getting much sun right now, as you know. Are you aware that Florida is the Sunshine State? California is the Golden State, named for the Gold Rush. 😊
Good evening Gylfi,
Thanks for the update, I already saw some unrest on the earthquakes app but of course didn’t know about the dangers.
I hope that the real big volcanoes keep quiet for some years, these volcanic systems on near Reykjavik are dangerous enough for now.
Keep safe.
Greetings from the Netherlands
Thank You Gylfi. A wonderfu video and report as always. Your video's are visually stunning and I will be eagerly following your town series as well. Best Regards and Wishes from NZ.
Thank you for the informative and detailed video as always. Have a good night, Gylfi ✌️
Thank you! You too!
Thank you soo much for this video. We all appreciate your fantastic work and photography. As always best wishes from your friends Jimi and Lyz in Norman Oklahoma.
Thankyou again for your update, I'm very sorry to hear the situation with the earthquakes volcanic unrest , it's very worrying
Gylfi - many thanks for the update, you have very informative channel that focuses on the facts 👍 cheers from Noosa Australia 🇦🇺
I visited in 2018 & fell in love with Iceland. Your videos and insights are excellent & informative. Prayers to your beloved land of fire & ice Iceland.
Your videos are excellent. Thank you for the update. It’s a shame it wasn’t better news for the capital area :(
Thanks for watching!
Thankyou for all the beautiful footage you have filmed. I hope things settle down but it looks unlikely.
Fascinating information, always enjoy your channel
Thank you 👍
Thank you for the update. Prayers and best wishes for everyone in Iceland. I love your drone footage, and thank you so much for labeling the landscape. Have a good day from Camden, Tn, US
Thanks for the updates. Very informative and interesting for me watching from Australia. Uncertain times over there for so many.
Glyfi love your honesty. Very rare indeed. ❤
Thanks for this update Gylfi, as concerning as it is I hope Iceland remains safe for all. I'm scheduled to be there for 7 days from the 10th Feb so just hoping for the best for everyone!
Wow! Certainly lots to digest.😐🙏 Let’s hope for the best since this affects everyone in the country.
I've now watched and listened to your update 3 times and I can't believe (politicians seem to be the same all over the world! ) how tenuous the situation may be for so many people. I'm sure this was one of the most difficult videos for you to make as it truly pulls at the heart strings because you have family and friends that will be affected. Thank you Gylfi. You have a polite way to describe the events. I'm not sure I would have the same restraint.
Thankyou for your detailed update, I follow your channel and appreciate all the work you put in. My heart goes out to you and everyone affected by this ongoing nightmare, stay safe
I appreciate that
Sincerely hope your brilliant, holistic, big picture analysis gets seen by your government’s think tank and policy decision makers!!
Tak, Gylfi, we have family in Reykjavik and Arnarnes. Your reports help us navigate through all of the info coming out of Island
Glad it's helpful and greetings from the north :)
Thank you for this overview of the bigger picture. Your landscape videos are amazing as always!
Many thanks!
Thanks Gylfi, things are looking a bit more serious. Could be eruptions back to back to back for years to come. They need to get to building those walls!
Building walls around Grindavik have been effective in diverting and slowing lava flows around that town. And the power plant is much better protected by a wall as well. Each of those was built based on the perceived threat at time.
Because of the expense of building a wall say around Reykyavik would be expensive and so more data is needed to determine where the next wall should be built
Very good video Gylfi ! Crazy times indeed .....thanx
thank you for the update
My pleasure 😊
The landscape is just stunningly beautiful, despite the threats… hoping for the very best for you all. My thoughts are with you and once again, thank you for your outstanding reporting and the amazing graphics and footage with it. One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. So bittersweet.
Excellent video! Thank you
Hi Gylfi, I really hope things don't mess up big time for you guys n gals, stay safe n well on the Beautiful Volcano Island ICELAND. TFS, GB :)
Thank you again! Wonderful coverage!
Thanks again!
I’ve been thinking of you all in Iceland since I stumbled onto your channel. My heart goes out to you and your fellow countrymen.
Thank you for your recent update.
So it"s not over yet and will be active quite soon.
I hope everyone gets their belongings out in time.
Also hope all residents find a safe place.
Such a soothing voice, have u ever thought about doing audio books?
Thanks for your update about the situation around Reykjavik. I did not know about the new home building on top of the lava field. Cities in many places are in danger from geological disasters. I live next to Los Angeles and there are active faults everywhere here, but most of buildings were built before they knew how active the faults are. It is extremely difficult to move a large city after it is built. It is sad that Grindavik is probably going to be abandoned, but it is tiny compared to Reykjavik as you observed.
Interesting how some authorities want to play down the possibility of an eruption at Reykjavik. But as the entire nation is a volcanic mountain, there is no safe place to build a settlement.
Saw the same kind of thing in Hawaii when I visited the Kona Coast a few years ago. I asked a park ranger about Hualalai, the big hill looming over Kona on the Big Island. There is a lava flow that dates to 1801, the airport is built on it because that was where the land was relatively cheap. Relatively, this is Hawaii. The park ranger said that Hualalai was never going to erupt again because it is moving off the Hot Spot. But how far has it moved off the Hot Spot since 1801?
Uh, 70 feet, perhaps 80 feet. The width of several spaces in a parking lot.
Yeah.
Thank you for keeping us informed even if it is with bad forecasts for the capital. ❤🌋
