I think Mazda builds the best driving cars outside of Germany. It's too bad more people in the US don't give them a shot. Maybe if they did, we'd see more of them with a manual trans. From the ones I've owned, they're just as reliable as any other Japanese car.

Mazda has some serious design issues that cost you large amounts of money to remedy.
Of the Japanese car brands Honda and Subaru perform best in my opinion. Worth the extra money to buy in my opinion.
I would also choose Toyota over Mazda

Correction: SOME places in the U.S. don't buy Mazdas. Californians still love their Mazda. I see them all over the place here in Northern California. Also, Mazda had a substantial increase in sales in 2023, fyi.

It is a subcompact, especially in the back seats it is tight for adults. The storage area is small too. There are USB's and a 12 v power jack inside the center armrest compartment, but there should be jacks by the vent in the back. Still, the interior is better than some more expensive brands. I was impressed with the performance on the dirt and hill. That Soul Red is one of the best red shade of color ever on a modern car, and you even come close to matching it with your blouse. I have a '21 CX-30 non-turbo, had it for 2 1/2 years now, have driven it cross-country from NJ and into the deep south, midwest in 38 states, has 39K on it and but for the battery (original was a cheap, low CCA's one, replaced with a better 650 CCA) and no other problems. I like the road feel, that has a real shiftable, real automatic transmission (not a CVT), the AWD gives you confidence on slippery/rainy surfaces, decent fuel mileage. I believe you did a review of a non-turbo CX-30 several years ago and you liked that too.

In addition to a 95 Miata, I have a 2020 Mazda 3 all-wheel drive. I second your feelings regarding a manual transmission in these. That is literally the only thing I don't like about my Mazda 3. I'm happy that they're using what could be considered an old school 6-speed automatic, but a manual would really make the cx30 and Mazda 3 AWD kind of special

I drive Toyotas for 17 years and in 2022 got myself a Mazda3. I love the way my 2022 Mazda3 premium plus drives, there's this overwhelming feeling I want to take each curve a little faster, and the g-vectoring control really keeps things planted with minimal body lean & that's even with the junk stock 18in toyo proxes. I don't track my car but i love throwing it into bends, roundabouts and twisty country roads in sport mode.

One of the features I love of my CX-30 is that the headlights both auto level, and they also turn with the steering wheel. I was a bit weirded out when I first drove it at night, but it sure makes a difference when turning or going around curves.

The idea was matured and mass produced in 1955 by Citroën on the DS19.

Adaptive headlights were finally legalized in the US by the DOT fairly recently. I have older BMWs that came with the adaptive hardware anyway, and the software locked out the function. When you started the cars, the self-test would still move the headlights to verify that the motors were free, but they didn’t do anything while driving. There were separate fixed position lights for lighting up corners.

@@Palaemon44 That sounds like a smart design from BMW. Citroën had similar systems for many decades.
The SM, a rare and complex machine, had a cluster of 6 head lamps the self leveled during braking and accelaration, and the inner pair swivled to iluminate around bends. All hydraulically operated.

The Tucker had a single center headlight that turned with the direction of steering in June 1947.
They should be mandatory instead of the headlight off when the directional signal flashes on that side. D'oh !

You can get a manual version in the UK but it's a different engine being a 2 litre naturally aspirated Sky Active X which I think has a supercharger but only has 180 bhp. I'm pretty sure the supercharger is for fuel efficiency and not power. They are saying 47 mpg average, that's imperial gallons not US gallons

Only front wheel drive which is a bummer. Huh, I just clicked around and ya'll get manuals in almost everything.

Hmmm I've never heard of a supercharger giving you a better gas mileage I thought it was usually the opposite 🤔

This is what the website says "An extremely lean mix of fuel and air are compressed to an extremely high pressure. A spark then ignites a very small, dense amount of fuel, which further raises the heat and pressure in the cylinder, causing the remaining fuel to ignite under pressure (like a diesel). The fuel burns more quickly and more completely so you get better performance and fewer emissions than a conventional engine." and "there is a small supercharger which helps to pressurise the air in the engine when running in SPCCI mode"@@RRr-yl8zr

Nice to see the shifter moves the right way when in manual mode. Some cars it's forward to shift up and back to shift down and that's the wrong way round!

So glad you finally did the turbski version. I have the 21 CX30 and yeah the tires aren't great but I've managed in the snow which this car is great in snow. I'm getting Michellin Crossclimate II tires to replace the stock tires this year. I have almost 31k miles on them and they're about half worn but not going to make another winter so it's time to move on.
