Well, seems like the devs that worked for Rare never lost their touch in terms of optimizing Nintendo hardware.
So true, unlike other lazy devs. In fact, it looks closer to the Xbox One port
I read so many bad reviews of this game, and I bought it anyway because I grew up with Banjo. It isn't a masterpiece but I seriously don't understand why people are so let down. This is better than 80% of the stuff that gets put out.
RedYellow Blue Preach
The game was a bit over-hyped. Pair that with them removing Jontron, and the community ended up in a state of "love it or hate it" with no in-between.
😪 Im a huge Banjo Fan and I can honestly say that i love this game! It's hella fun! WTF is wrong with youtubers hating on the game? Fukn pests!
And yes for real, this is by far better than what Craptivision , EA, Bethesda ( since skyrim) have given us for the past 8 years...that days a lot
It looks and plays great on Switch. And in portable it looks really sharp:)
Inferior hardware = better performance
What the heck happened lol
Nintendo magic
thebahooplamaster sub to me
Rare just joves optimizing for Nintendo hardware. That's what happened :D
9 Months. That Happend
That’s the power of Nintendo, baby...
Regardless of console or quality I enjoyed playing this game for what it is. Not going to be buying it twice though.
super mario t why would we? you don't have any content.
HOLY SHIT
THIS DUDE HAS ONE OF THE 4 GREGS FOR HIS PROFILE PICTURE
😍😍😍😍😍
They did a great job with this port.

Why does everyone hate Yooka-Laylee? I've been playing it on the Switch and it's one of my favorite Switch games so far.
Trey Bolick Some seem to say that Odyssey is a better modernization of the formula.
Naveek Darkroom I guess I could see that, but that doesn't explain some of the vitriolic hatred in the comments. Then again, maybe that's just because it's a comment section?
Because it was advertised as a Banjo Kazooie spiritual succesor and it didnt live up to the expectations
It is supposed to be a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie but is worse than that game and does not fix the problems Banjo originally had.
Yeah, I've heard Yooka-Laylee fails to address issues that this genre had back in its heyday, such as the camera.
it's actually 630p on handheld mode (confirmed by playtonic on twitter)
Did somebody else confirm this with a frame counter or something.
Check Digital Foundry's video on it. They made a frame rate test on the game. And check the video description as well
Got it just now for $10 and dk64/Banjo vibes all over. Love this game.
Really?? Im debating on getting it rn. Its just 10$ tho so im most likely gonna grab it, any good??
I’ll probably pick it up at some point. Pleased it’s a lot better now
Been waiting for the switch release to finally get this game. Disappointed that there is no physical release though. 😭
it never be? Or is it just temporary ?
Patrick Aubry devs said they might do a physical release in the future. Idk if I want to wait to see though. Been waiting enough already for our switch version.
MF BLAU same here, I want a physical version, but can't wait to play it.
Yeh me too. I have it for the PS4 and I would buy it again for switch, but not in a digital form.
+P A The physical version is coming out this August
I'm glad the wait was worth it for this port! The devs have done us good! Here's hoping for a physical release at some point.
honestly I've never been able to notice difference in graphics quality. at least not since the Wii days, it was night and day back then. nowadays I can't even tell, Doom on PC looks exactly the same as Doom on Switch to me. maybe I'm blind who knows but in a way I'm kinda glad because that means I'm happy with any kind of port whether it looks good or not
People keep complaining that YL undocked is 600p (it's actually 630p), and not 720p. Honestly though, I've spent so many hours into the switch version, and I've noticed like no resolution issues at all.
Good! I was waiting for this version
I just recently bought the “limited run” physical copy for the switch. I wanted to play it when it first came out, but I wasn’t going to buy it digital this was something I wanted to collect
thank you for this review i found it answers the questions i had sub +like
On big thing I noticed and appreciated: No dancing collectables on the load screens anymore. Y'know, those things that stuttered the game so hard you felt the game was about to crash?
Plays pretty good. A little harsh after playing Odyssey, but after I changed the camera to manual and dropped the sensitivity to min or near min, it felt okay.
I'm definitely getting Yooka-Laylee on the Nintend Switch 😊
The PS4 Version's Controls worked great too and were very responsive. The minor berry frame slow down frame rate bug thing was the only real issue with game play I mentioned in the previous comment.
I preloaded this yesterday. So glad to FINALLY play this game
I saw some videos that stated that Yooka-Laylee was a disappointing game, but the Switch version was not available during that time.
As for loading times, we can't forget that Breath of the Wild has its fair share of long loading times as well.
Nah, BotW loading times on switch are pretty short. The loading times on WiiU are pretty bad though. (about 30 seconds if I recall correctly), but Yooka Laylee's loading times are even longer.
I remember the loading times for that game. Ruined the flow of gameplay.
Different engine. unity is not even as good as UE on switch.
If I recall, Wii U BOTW had better loading times. GameXplain did a video comparison.
BoTW's load times are okay to awful depending on what you're doing. Quick traveling and going to the world map from a dungeon? You're looking at 30sec+.
Even dying it's around 15 seconds.
Short answer:
Surprisingly, Yes.
Does anyone know if A Hat In Time will come to the switch?
Unlike Playtonic, the developers for aHiT has been pretty clear that they don't want to port for the Nintendo Switch. Playtonic has been working really hard to get a solid port for the Nintendo fans.
Musical Shy Guy why? Wouldn't it be better for their business?
I'm sure aHiT developers has a reason for it, but I'm not sure. Porting a game is much more complicated and technically/economically difficult than people expect it to be. Yooka-Laylee took 7 months because of the size of the indie game, while much, MUCH smaller games like Snake Pass only took 3 weeks due to it's size. Considering that aHiT is also a pretty big indie game, it would take a long time.
I've been following YL pretty closely, so most of my assumptions on aHiT comes from what I've seen with YL, so don't take my advice as fact.
Wily Wimpod A Hat In Time devs will not be porting the game to Switch since Unreal Engine 3 isn't well compatible with the system. Coupled with the fact that they're also a small team, they won't be investing in it.
^^^
Also did you play it on Tabletop mode too (I know you didn't say in the video but maybe you did play it in tabletop after the video or before the video and forgot to mention it)?
I honestly liked this game on PS4. So it wasn't a problem for me back in March
Looks like I will have a new game to play on the train to and from work after I finish Mario vs Rabbids !
It sounds like you "liked it a lot" in handheld mode. Leaves me optimistic!
That is the exact reason, Just a few days ago I purchased a Limited Run Games copy of Looka-Laylee for $80 Brand new. And I opened it as soon as it was received. Not many copies of it for the Switch exist !
I like how they always say all things gaming even though it's just Nintendo stuff
Redmoe the Gamer
I knew I wasn't the only one who noticed this.
It's probably about 90-95% Nintendo stuff. They still do news on Kingdom Hearts, discuss Sony E3 conferences, and Derrick even did a Let's Play of Resident Evil 7 when it came out :)
Tommy Deonauth's Archives I'm not complaining
Well for now, wait for PS5 or Sony do something new, all media will talk about it over and over. Switch is topic of the year now. Almost all gaming outlets 50% of their contents delivering switch news.
There are moments it’s other things. They do prefer Nintendo though.
People are still upset about the whole JonTron situation lmao 😂😂
TooTyrnt who?
Ironically the people who wanted him removed are the only ones who still care lol
I'm still upset that he got deleted. Even if it was a stupid cameo, he is a fan of Banjo-Kazooie and being featured on a spiritual successor of that saga would've been so awesome for him
That's because the gaming world on the internet is mostly high schoolers who idolize CZcamsrs and still think jokes about Comic Sans and Waluigi are funny. So, instead of stating something intelligent and informative like, "Yooka-Laylee isn't as fun as Banjo Kazooie due to less interesting worlds," they say "This game sucks because JonTron."
Jontron took it well and was mature about the whole thing, someone in that situation had to be.
Wished they put more work in their game instead of stripping assets.
Hat in Time however, was amazing AND had jontron, and they say you cant have it all.
When they upload at 4 in the morning and you be half sleep
Treyshellz Same for me.
Treyshellz sub to me
I would to know on the Nintendo Switch the shot target command. Help me please?
Those who wanted Banjo Kazooie on the Switch, well there is this game. It is very Banjo Kazooie esque and I've even seen it be called a successor to that game before.
John Moss You’re not very bright, are you John?
It's the switch wizardry! You maid me a believer...believer!
It’s not just one game on the Switch anymore. There are plenty of good games...
i heard the controls and camera are improved too. is this true? currently on sale for 12.50 (cad plus tax) and debating cause i already got it a while back on ps4 for 17.50 and didn't even bother finishing the first world with the issue but i'm a diehard banjo fan and i loved impossible lair
Played a bit of the Xbox one Version when my brother got it back in March, but I wait to get a more in-depth look at it when I would get my backer code for Switch. Boy was I glad I waited. I don’t fully understand the hate for this game, I love it. Music’s phenomenal, love the hub world and the characters, and best of all it’s fun. One of the best indie games out there
It's not and indie game you spoon
What memory card are you using? Because you’re about 10-15 seconds off of Digital Foundry on those load times.....
I am going to give it a try
I always dreamed of a 3d platformer on a handheld. The Switch has made that dream a reality!
I can't wait to play this on my switch!
I can
I'm playing on the switchihjt and it works awesomely
Will there be a physical version?
Up load at 1 am I thought it was going to be a video on secret of mana remake on the switch but noooo . Woke up for nothing
Im holding out for a physical release hopefully soon!
I think I might wait as well.. In the mean time I'll probably get Super Lucky's Tail on the Xbox that one got my attention as well
Unfortunately that one to me just seems like a rushed cash grab :( I hope its fun, if you do decide to get it.
Sophia Rodas I believe it's decent from what I've seen at least the problem is Mario Odyssey exist lol and it makes it look so bad.. Speaking of do you have Mario?
Elvin VonSander yup, the backlog is real...
Sophi23 expect even-worse loading times, as the carts of the Switch have been proven to be the slowest option for loading times. It could be a couple seconds difference or far worse, depends on the game.
We is here my boiz !!!
I haven't played Yooka--Laylee, so I have no opinion of my own, though I do plan to play it at one point
If you do play it, have fun!
should i get it on switch or PC? My PC has a 980Ti so ofcourse i can run it at 1080p. im just wondering where its best played.
Also I heard on the PS4 version of the game, it had bad angling with the camera, which was frustrating, and some of the levels and quests were pretty unfair and repetitive.
Personally, I waited for this game on the switch just for a nostalgic feeling. Rare made their games very popular on Nintendo such as GoldenEye, Donkey Kong Country 1-3,Banjo Kazooie and Tooie. Even if Rare's not coming back to work with Nintendo, I hope to see more of Playtonic's games on Nintendo.
First this, Battle Chasers:Nightwar and finally Hat in Time. Will be worth the wait.
I'll be buying it on the switch. I waited. I'm holding out a few months to see if a physical copy is released.
Is it getting a physical release on Switch?
But how does it compare to the PC version? Not too worried about portability since I already played the PC version on a handheld system, just curious about overall performance and any feature or option differences.
does it have a hard copy for switch?
I think cutting down on some vegetation and fauna may have helped a bit
I really wish they had waited for the Switch version at launch. Take the extra months and add the polish it desperately needs. This was so close to being an amazing game.
I think while it would be better if Playtonic took more time to polish it, Playtonic actually fed off of all of the criticisms mainly. The people that worked at Playtonic on Twitter were pretty positive about the results, and said it was a great learning experience. The summer after YL released, they released the Spit 'N' Polish update, which fixed so many technical and camera issues, and they even added a ton of more options like skipping dialogue, character voice volumes, quick-speech, and even fixed some game design issues.
But for their future games, they definitely will benefit taking time to add a lot of polish in. They've been hiring a lot more people for testing the game and even hired a coordinator. If they don't rush their next game and have a release for every version at the same time, they'll definitely benefit. :)
Is there going to be a physical release for Switch?
Playtonic stated that if the demand is there, then they'll make a physical version. I think what they meant by that is seeing if the demand still hold up after the game releases (which I personally think it will).
0:28 Back in April I think you mean.
I'm glad I waited, I'll get it on switch down the line
Are you guys planning on making a comparison video between the Xbox and Switch versions
Nintendo Life did a comparison video: czcams.com/video/0CTH10VB1fs/video.html
Yeah yeah yeah if youre ready to rage! Raise your hands up this what rock and roll looks like
Perfect for on the go or at home
The first person control is cumbersome on the the left analog stick click. Some camera issues, particularly while flying. I am satisfied with my backing, but I want to know if I can let Playtonic know my complaints.
Let them know on Twitter. They may not respond to you (they're pretty bad at responding), but they're VERY good at listening. They've always proven to have always been listening (the summer patch for the game proves it). They'll very likely take in your feedback and consider it, even if it seems like they aren't.
This game feels right on Nintendo. This game does not hold ones hand, so if you are used to modern games and don't like thinking. This game might not be for you. I truly feel like I am playing N64 all over again, especially the harder stuff. It feels great beating it!
Those load times sound like Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex (PS2).
Will you do a head-to-head comparison between Switch and PC?
FYI the loading time is mainly effected by the type of micro SD card you are using. Internal harddrive load time is more faster.
Yooka-Laylee is actually 600p on handheld mode kinda proving that 600p and 720p isn't very noticeable on handheld mode.
Nice, a 3 a.m. upload
Omg 45 seconds is a problem??? "Gamers" nowday's are odd. I've always thought of load times as time to take a Swig of Mountain Dew maybe take a bite out of a cookie or some chips.
That and things having to be 4k hyper-realistic or it's garbage... I can't stand it hahaha. I grew up on Super Nintendo and Gameboy... My god these children wouldn't have known what to do with themselves... I love the Switch. I love everything it's doing for me. Full length games on the go? Fuck yeah lmao. People just like to whine.
@@sethkauffman9915 siiiiip. Yep, super Mario world? Now that was a game. These people aren't *real* gamers, because they aren't like me, and I'm a *real* gamer.
Is it worth buying if I already own it on the ps4 I would just like it portable as I really enjoyed the game!
Is this game as a Psysical release or download only?
Digital only. Playtonic stated that if the demand is there, then they'll make a physical version. I think what they meant by that is seeing if the demand still hold up after the game releases (which I personally think it will).
Honestly, this is one of the system sellers for me. I could definitely just play it on my PC or PS4 but for some reason I cant stand playing 3D Platformers on those systems. 3D platformers for me have a home on Nintendo consoles, and that's probably the nostalgia I have with them. Regardless, I'll be picking this one up for sure.
Enjoy! :D
Ten to twenty second load times on the PS4 Version I counted it.
Yes!
I don't own any current gen systems I plan to get a PS4 Pro and Switch so If I had to choose I'll probably go for Switch version so I can play it anywhere I go.
Haven't played this game. Which platform should I buy this on? I have all 3 consoles no pc though
Switch version. It's VERY SLIGHTLY technically downgraded, but the downgrades are so small, you can hardly notice them (watch Digital Foundy's technical comparison if you're curious. I'll provide a link below if you're interested). But what makes the Switch version ahead of everything else is the portability. Playing an old Rare-styled game is incredibly satisfying. Playtonic Games worked really hard on this port, and it's getting a lot of positive praise compared to the XB1 and PS4 version. :)
Link to Digital Foundry's YL Technical Comparison: czcams.com/video/NfBeett5FII/video.html
Why cartridges have load times is beyond my knowledge. Ok, SNES and Genesis had a very few games with it, but it was so rare that actually looked cool.
Well, from what I’ve seen the game doesn’t seem to be as bad as people say right up until the last 3rd or so. I might actually pick it up when it drops in price to like 25-30 €
It really bugs me that there are two shadows when you jump...
Me too at first but the other shadow (the circle) is very helpful when trying to land on specific platforms.
I want a physical copy
I'm so happy now that I waited patiently for this port to come out and didn't buy it anywhere else first.
In case you're wondering why, it's because our PC is from 2010, I don't have a PS4 and you know how the Xbox One version is. I'm currently saving money for a better PC sometime next year so I can actually play games from our current gen on it.
I'll probably get Banjo-Threeie later, I'm really enjoying Xenoblade 2 at the moment.
I expected more like every time you go to a new world, you would transform into a creature or get new abilities in different areas or play as a different character to get rid of a path
Loading screens are fifferent too.
If it had come out before Mario I might have tried it but boy did Mario change the game.
meloNarius
Odyssey has set the standard for all future 3D platformers.
Just forget odyssey happened. When it comes to 3D platformers, keep mario in a different classroom. He’ll make pretty much anything look like shit. (I’m saying hold other platformers to a different standard)
@@callinater6133 to be fair, Celeste made me look at 2D platformers totally different lol. So I definitely always try to keep an open mind about stuff.
I'm buying it but I really wanted physical.
In my experience the xbox one or even the 360 controller always felt a bit sloppy and inaccurate whereas playstation 3/4 tend to be overly sensitive and the switch usually feels just about right but again that's me and my preferences
Looking good and being good aren't always hand in hand. I am a little surprised the game got extra polish for the Switch, though. Guess they just needed more time to work on it.
The nostalgia...
I called it!!
I will say, on the PS4 version. Not only were the loading screens a huge problem for me, they actually scared me away from playing the game. The good thing about the Switch, is once the game is loaded I can just put it in sleep mode and resume it whenever I want, without having to go through the loading screens again.
Since I couldn't get into the PS4 version, and I never even passed the first level. I think I'll try again on Switch, simply because I think I'll find much more enjoyment playing this in handheld than in my living room.
But also, the PS4 version had co-op in it. I'm not sure if it's different from the co-op in the Switch, but I'm pretty sure it's nothing new or exclusive to the console.
If it's not too much to ask, when megaman 11 comes out months from now, could you let us know which console it runs the best on?
If it isn't 1080/60 across the board then we have a problem.
The switch has the best games fun and addictive and it has big adventures for the hardcore players its the ultimate console atm ive had ps4 and xbox one and i dont touch them now i have the switch
That happened on PS4 with me
The load times
After Super Mario Odyssey and A Hat in Time, I think I might have a hard time touching Yooka-Laylee now, regardless of how it performs. I love the original Banjo-Kazooie but Yooka-Laylee, from what I can tell, borrows from the school of thought of Banjo-Tooie and Donkey Kong 64 making its worlds vast and huge just for the sake of making them vast and huge and not giving the player anything really fun to do in it.
Maybe when it's on sale one day I'll give it a shot but for now I'm content with Mario and Hat Kid. Hopefully A Hat in Time can find its way to the Switch one day.
THIS VERSION of Yooka-Laylee is a lot more refined and better, but I see where you're coming at though. I see it more of a meal. An appetizer (A Hat in Time for PC), then followed by the main course (Mario Odyssey for Switch), then the optional desert item (Yooka-Laylee for Switch).
Being the YL fanboy that I am, of course I'm going to say that you should pick it up at full price. It's about 30-40 hours of collecting fun. The worlds are actually much more compact than BK imo. It's only because things are more spread out (because Yooka moves much faster than Banjo) that people are saying that it's empty. But in comparison of Yooka's walk speed vs. Banjo's walk speed, the worlds are actually about the same size.
Lol, there I go again talking my butt off about the game. But yeah, if the game goes on sale, it's worth trying out.
Yooka-Laylee digital only or is it physical as well?
Digital only. Playtonic stated that if the demand is there, then they'll make a physical version. I think what they meant by that is seeing if the demand still hold up after the game releases (which I personally think it will).
Musical Shy Guy okay thank you
I came from wii and gamecube loading times so switch yooka laylee loading times seem instant
So which is the preferred console of choice to play? Xbox One or Switch?
Switch, because it runs better
Well it technically doesn't run better (watch Digital Foundry's video on it), but the downgrades are so incredibly small, it's basically the same as the XB1 and PS4 version. However, the Switch version gets the portability factor, which is a HUGE bonus.
So in my PERSONAL opinion, it's a lot better on the Switch than the other versions.
