Yooka-Laylee on Switch - It's a Superb Conversion!

- UPDATE: Playtonic confirms 630p resolution, not the 600p counted here.
Yes, we've got PS4 vs Switch graphics comparisons, and yes, we've got a full performance breakdown. Playtonic's Switch port is a rare example of a conversion rebuilt for the strengths of the platform. It's a superb piece of work.

Glad to see platonic didn't do a shabby port.
RANDY TYSON c'mon this is pretty much rare what did you expect?
RANDY TYSON
They are former Rareware, better know as just Rare.
Off course they will make extra effort to deliver great experience.
They had amazing N64 games.
Banjo Kazzoie,Banjo Tooie,Jet Force Gemini,Blast Corps... .
ApolloRED I did expect ba good game, and they didn't dobthat either did they? sonwht would anyone expecting anything good now?
RANDY TYSON autism came back again.
Unlike Gears for Breakfast,
who can't even deliver a good game, let alone port it to the Switch.
Pathetic.
I wish Rime developers would wake up and take a note.
Makes me appreciate Super Mario Odyssey even more. An even bigger, better-looking game that runs perfectly at 60 fps :)
actually rime developers made a similar thing changing assets and stuff for the switch version but didnt pay off enough. fair to say too that rime is a better looking game
Also Monolith Soft, Xenoblade 2 has the worst performance on Switch using a WII U engine.
Pasi.
Bigger team,bigger budget,much more time... .
THAT is what Nintendo had at their disposal when converting Breath of The Wild.
ron s Rime's issue is the unoptimized engine itself as well as the fact that the devs have never worked with ARM architecture before the Switch.
You're right for pointing out that they actually ported this instead of brute-forcing the game to work at lower resolution
RogueGamer25
He's referring to the fact they didn't just lower the resolution to the point where it worked and then just stopped. They optimised to get the best output they could without compromising on the frame rate. Unlike Rocket League which just lowers the resolution an absurd amount for some reason.
I'm a PC gamer more than other sytems but that Switch is killing it this year. Good see Nintendo back to its best
Hero's 'N' Villains switch and ps with there exclusive.
I've got a ps4 too but I'm going tp get myself a switch in the new year after a little price drop
I only enjoyed Zelda and Mario from Switch to be honest nothing else really stood out for me. PS4 on the other hand has many exclusives with a huge variety of choice so PS4 easily earned another win from me. Anyway PC+PS4+Switch is the best combo and is all you need.
Dbzfan 01 Zelda especially is my game to get when I go for one and yes agree those three systems are where it's at.
Yeah iactually have a Switch with my PC now. Playing games at their best, then taking them on the go is pretty awesome.
I don't like Yooka Laylee but to give credit where credit's due, Playtonic did a good job with the switch port.
101supertails you do not not like it. YOU MUST HATE IT! ITS ON THE LIST OF TOP 20 WORST THINGS EVER MADE.
101supertails Team 17 makes the console ports if I recall correctly
DJ Crimson Sunbird. Team 17 didnt produce the game, it was only publiced by them. Playtonic/ ex rare made/ produced/ developed the game. Team 17 had nothing to do with the development.
NJ J the PS4 and Xbox One version were ported in house by Team 17
NJ J Team 17 made the PS4 and Xbox One ports, while Playtonic worked on the PC and Switch versions.
I loved Yooka-Laylee and I wish Playtonic Games a great future.
I'm looking forward to Tooka-Laylee!
And I'm also looking forward to seeing what that "Demonstrate patients, user" thing is all about.
Katphood Plays A Game i wish the camera and arrow "updates" where optional i loved the derpy camera and if people get lost (even me) its their own fault.
I'm really happy to hear this, and just shows the power of optimization when it comes to games. That's why extra development time is always a good thing :) Been holding out for the Switch version, and now I might just have to get it :D
GamingMyWholeLife Isn’t this game among the less demanding games? I dunno, I never Player nor have seen any HW/SW requirements lol
At launch, on the other Platforms, it didn't run so smoothly. Your right, it doesn't look demanding but it still wasn't as smooth as it should have been. That might be because of the developers themselves? Who knows
Yeah it is a less demanding game but it was using a engine that wasn't optimised for the Switch very well so that's why it was a challenge.
Oh credit to them. I do actually think they did a good job
Honestly, prepare to be disappointed if you were waiting for the game to come to Switch.
I bought it on PC and even though all the old N64 platformers are some of my favorite games I couldn't find it in me to finish the game.
The first level is enjoyable, but it just dropped off after that for me.
It picked up a bit at the last level for me because I liked the theme but it was too late, I lost so much steam with this game that I just lost all desire to finish or really even play it anymore because I just wasn't having fun.
Hopefully A Hat In Time has a good port to Switch because I enjoyed that game much more then Yooka-Laylee.
Looks.
Great.
Digital Foundry said it -.-. I hate when people talk to much.
EvolutionOfMe wtf? Only because is Nintendo?
Oh piss off
For the switch power yes..
looks like PS2 game
À 30fps PS4 game port with a stable 30fps to the Switch is insanely impressive!
Nope😊
idk why but your videos are so rewatchable i can watch one of them in one moment and then on the next i can watch it again and have the same experience
Glad the switch is getting the 3rd party support that the wiiu desperately needed. La noire getting ported is huge. Nintendo fucking killed it this year.
Yooka Laylee is a solid game that brings back that old school platformer fun. It's a great starting point for Playtonic to build upon for their future games. I hope they keep delving deeper into that pool of Rareware style greatness.
Well said. This is exactly how I hoped it would be. This Playtonic/(rare) lot are seriously decent at making games. Oh and the nostalgia fix. Happy gamin bro!
This runs better then PUBG on Xbox One X.
*xbox fan boys incoming*
This is game is shit, not a systems fault tbh.
The switch really is the best handheld console ever made, and the great games just keep coming.
Steffenpoulsen Steffenpoulsen Switch is a great console. But saying it's the best handheld console ever made is taking things a bit too far unless you have forgotten the legendary PSP or Game Boy Advance. Though it's technically very adept, I believe that GBA and PSP revolutionized the handheld industry more than the Switch.
Except the Switch is a handheld console *hybrid*. Don't really think it's as comparable to the PSP or GBA (as a result) as you're trying to say. Also don't think I'd even say the GBA revolutionized the handheld market, would give that more to the DS but that's just me.
Do only 30fps and 600p
No the Switch is not the best console, maybe the handheld but not the best console ever made.
Mordecai R no one said it is the best console in general.
Hey, John, great video, as always. But I have to ask you, where is DF retro?
17th Dec
IMHO those softer shadows look more pleasant for this kind ot art style.
I honestly think the blurrier shadows on switch are an upgrade because blurrier shadows look a bit more realistic (at least shadows coming from sunlight are)
I think it speaks loads to the folks at Playtonic that they actually took the time to make sure their game ran well and looked great on Switch. People can be mad at the wait time all they want, but at least we didn't get a gimped version of the game (unlike Rime and WWE 2K18). Yooka Laylee might have received mixed reviews and reception, but it's clear that the devs care about it (unlike games birthed from similar circumstances such as Mighty Number 9). If they take the constructive criticism for a sequel (or another game altogether) like they seem to want to do, I have faith that their next title could be great.
I'm all in for a second Yooka Laylee!
CabinDoor
Yooka-Laylee was *never* intended to be Wii U exclusive. They *always* intended to release it on PS4, Xbox One and PC alongside Nintendo consoles. In fact, they actually planned to release it on PC *first* with console ports coming later. They only even attempted a simultaneous console and PC release because they reached the stretch goal for it on their Kickstarter campaign.
There were really only two reasons why the Wii U version was canceled. 1; they ended up learning the hard way that the Unity engine is *horribly* optimized for it and 2; they realized that it was no longer really worth investing their time in developing a port of their game for a console that was all but officially *dead* at that point because of the Switch.
Great video again guys. I'm sold!
Great! Exactly what I wanted to see, was waiting to get this til I could get it on the switch
Some of these downgrade tweaks in graphics are quite charming for this style, like the shadows on the Switch. Reminds me even more of the N64 era, and feels right at home.
I like your representations! Subbed!
Thank you for taking my doubt away, its indeed a great finish for Nintendo’s platformers. :)
The game still looks amazing they put some real work to get it to run on the switch at a stable 30fps. Good job guys
And 900p, unlike soni forces at 720p 30 fps and 7th gen visuals. Bad port. Now this, looks very impressive
Looks fucking great man. I'm once again, impressed. The little console that could.
Impressive. Looks like i'll be picking this one up for Switch after all. Looking forward to it.
A hat in time needs to come to the switch!
i agree, it would be a great match i have it on pc and it's a great game.
It's using an older version of Unreal which is not supported by the Switch. They'd need to remake the game on the newer version.
I have great news
The hat of time is coming to switch
yey
You wont see the haters make a video about this, But they do freak out When they see that one switch game that ran like crap in handheld mode(xenoblade) like yall aint even gonna buy a switch stop spreading the hate. Instead spread allllll the info So ALSO the good news like this
Joel Boafo xenoblade looks bad portable Bc it was rushed I’m pretty sure they wanted to release it before the year ended
I know why its bad in portable mode, im just pointing out that people LOVE it when they hear a game runs or looks like crap on the switch, yet ignore all the good ones and its just ignorant
I haven't played Yooka-Laylee as it didn't seem interesting to me at the time but after seeing it on the Nintendo Switch, I might play it now
A good Switch port, unlike WWE 2K18 😔
I honestly think the softer shadows are an improvement.
Fantastic port!
I bought this. Thanks to devs for their hard work. It was worth the wait.
Hopefully the switch get ports as good as these and not like WWE2k18
Good to see. But I'll be waiting for a boxed version.
I think the first world adds more lighting when expanded as well which can affect performance a little bit sometimes
Great video man! This is awesome. I know this game had flaws, but it looks fun so im going to pick it up.
I will get this as soon as the physical version is available. Based on the good reception, there will be one...
Personally, I'd never have got this on my PS4 Pro, I use the console for games like ACO, HZD... but on the Switch, Yooka-Laylee feels right at home as you said so glad they did it right.
This should serve as an example for future development & ports on the Switch as we have seen the good and the bad this year.
Gameplay +Frame Rate>Graphics Quality.
When it comes to Switch games, the developers usually have two options:
60fps with less desirable graphics or 30fps with good graphics.
I think some companies should think about making games play at 45fps with satisfactory-leveled graphics.
@@DeevDaRabbit problem with 45 FPS is that it can't be evenly divided on a 60 hertz monitor AKA most TVs so having a stuttery image is inevitable
Honestly the lower wishing assets kind of...look more fitting? The game looks visually more whole than before. Sounds goofy I know, but it seems more consistent.
Very nice! Not sure if i want to get this game after the negativity i have heard about it, but i may still get it on sale at some point. Switch will be my place to buy this since i can take it anywhere. These kind of games just feel right on a Nintendo platform too.
now all I can hope for is a hat in time, ill gladly get it again
i really hope that one day we have separate AA and AF filter chip so any game can run with 2x AA and 16x AF without any performance hit
Beautiful
Man I was expecting a bad port, instead they really did some extra work! 👏👏 Despite owning a capable pc and a PS4, the switch will be my chosen system for this title!! Nothing beats the portability!
Platform paradise indeed!
Wow superb optimization
I very much waited to get this game on Switch, it just felt more at home here. I think the only problem is that the should have came out well before Mario Odyssey. As it stands it's completely overshadowed and I don't think it is going to do as well as it could have. Especially with Christmas coming up if people have to pick between Odyssey or this I don't see it winning out very often.
I'm really glad to hear that the port was well done though, that's something we always have to worry about with these 3rd party games. Optimization is a powerful thing, and it is encouraging to see a company care about it.
TheWoebegoneJackal if they had rushed the game it'd have ended up just like rime
They couldn't finish earlier as they were waiting on the Unity update.
I think that the timing is unfavorable as well, but then again they're also different flavors of platform games, kind of like between Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64.
TheWoebegoneJackal they’re completely different games though lol. Nobody said “well you have Mario 64, so don’t get Banjo Kazooie”
I do get that this and Odyssey are not 1-1, and I do understand why they had to wait (which is a good reason), but that still doesn't change the unfortunate timing. They will still compete for the same players that don't have either, and I doubt many will get this if they can only get one.
As a kid I did actually have to pick between Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, that was a fun christmas. Good thing I chose neither and got DK 64 instead... lmao
I want to play this game, especially for christmas!
Yooka-Laylee uses a video file for the background animation during loading (stumbled upon that while creating the "Magic Camera" for Boundary Break).
My assumption: They probably cut it away as it needs to stream from the internal storage / SD card and then needs to be decompressed, taking up some bandwidth that is being used to load and decompress the assets instead.
wish I'd sprang for the switch version over the PC version now
im still waiting for a low vs high comparison. i could see it myself but im too lazy to check
It's always fun when DF reviews a Switch port - not in a car crash way. I mean honestly - porting down to Switch is an art form and I love to see how different studios handle such an endeavor.
Agreed.
You guys at Digital foundry jus sold some copies of Yooka Laylee on switch 😊
Buying this tomorrow. Now if only A Hat in Time could be ported too that would be fantastic.
Love this game. I downloaded it pirated and when I saw how I run on my computer, I bought it on Steam. We need more 3D platforms like this one.
what is that music at the beggining?
The fact that the UI renders at full resolution at all times helps a lot for image clarity, despite the game otherwise being 900p/600p.
Fuzzy text and sprites are immediately noticeable, so it was a great move to make this kind of a compromise to have a clearly visible image with lower res overall.
can you do a GRID Autosport graphics comparison iOS(iPad Pro), pc, playstation3/4?
I love your videos about Nintendo Switch
Wow. I have the game on ps4, but I'm gonna buy it again for the switch just to show support for the developers. You don't see this level of polish often when it comes to ports
Yooka-Laylee en Nintendo Swicth lo puedes llevar donde sea
Why is there such a big difference in res between dock and portable mode? 900p vs 600p? The gpu in portable mode is not that much slower or?
Black Widow GPU is downclocked in portable to maintain battery life.
Sounds like they were able to change just the right amount of things to make this run great and look really good. I've heard that the Developers of a hat in time said they have no interest whatsoever in doing a port and now I can see why. For a small team to have to change so many things to make it run optimally would be a huge job and the fact that the game engine itself doesn't really work with the switch .
What is the sound track for this video?
Honestly, especially with a cartoony art style, the game on switch looks perfectly acceptable docked. This is a switch port done right
This is an excellent port. Good job to Playtonic.
How does it compare to the ps4 post patch?
There will be a physical release?
Unrelated but I hope you guys cover Okami HD next.
Man I miss the time when this came out
I'll be picking this up physically.
When will we get a hat in time console analysis?
Song at the beginning???
please don't do wwe 2k 18 on switch
Ripan Dutta The comments would be filled to the brim with toxicity
Because you Nintendrones can't handle facts? the Switch is made for Cartoon games!
^That bait tho
Ioannis Stf it's rushed
Colin Gamagami
And both Outlast games.
I can't stand when people talk about Nintendo bias when it comes to videos like this. It's called tempering your expectations. No shit downgrades are necessary, Switch owners aren't expecting PS4 quality on hardware that they know is weaker.
The Switch version is probs the best for collectors since the version on emm cart is more up to date.
Wow, Playtonic did an excellent job.
I loved Yooka Laylee
Pleeaase do a video on Okami HD on all its newest platforms.
Where's the okami hd analysis?
i think is a good port.
AleXmads yI wanna try it out just to support the devs. The effort put into this gives me hope for the switches future
This is a really good job how long did this take
Only 8 months NICE
Great port.
Which brings lot more question about how *RIME* screwed up so much
Goddamn dude i'm talking about the Switch portage -_-
Rime on Switch is a murder, and Yooka shows us that it was possible to do better with the Switch.
Rime devs are currently working on a performance patch for Switch, it was posted by one of the devs via Twitter.
Good news ! :)
This is the version I was waiting for, this has to be played on Nintendo hardware
I'm absolutely shocked how well this runs, I remember playing the PS4 version and I kept on wondering how are they going to make a decent port for the Switch? I didn't think it'd be possible, glad to see I was very wrong. I'll probably buy it for Switch too, simply for the portability, but I'll wait and see if there's going to be a physical version.
BrendanBlair64 It's because the game looks like a ps3 game on the ps4 and is no struggle to run. Of course they don't need to downgrade much to get it on the switch..
Yay Playtonic did good. Good job guys.
If I had a Switch...ahhh but I don't.😡
Another great techical review from DigitalFoundryExperience.👍
i really want to get more games for the switch, but man they so expensive think ill be getting this on steam sales :( but i really want it for the switch
Finally a port done right
I’m getting the switch, because Banjo kazooie started on Nintendo and this is a spiritual sequel to that game
I'm glad it's out but I'll wait a month or two in case:
a cartridge version comes out (I prefer physical over digital, that's just me)
because I have other games I have to finish and catch up on
Maybe it could get a discount by then
And of course there'll be updates to improve the performance by then
I dunno why but I think the blurry shadows look a little better anyways. lol
(not counting Yooka's, since it goes back and forth between decent and bad)
I love my switch, I play it more than my pc and other home consoles. got my Skyrim on the go and Mario Rabbids Kingdom battles :) this game would be perfect for my Fiance :)
It would be incredible if Rare collaborated with Playtonic to develop a spiritual successor to Diddy Kong Racing. It could star Banjo or Conker or hell even Tip-Tup the turtle or Bumper the badger. They could reimagine all the original tracks plus add a ton of new ones, with an all new hub world and revamped adventure mode. I NEED THIS TO MAKE MY LIFE COMPLETE.
Great job Playtonic 👍. Now if only Gears for Breakfast could get A Hat in Time on the Switch. It's a great platformer that would work well on the console.
7:57 that's because it took ages to make all these collectibles dance.
Why 600p for handheld mode? Wasn't told why
the shadows on swithc look way better.
I hate when games do the super sharp shadow.
Walther Penne
Yes but it looks better to him. That's his point.
If only there was an option for just a "blob" shadow, which would be useful for precise platforming. I never played it, but I know my platformers.
They really need to port A Hat in Time.
