- Ahead of our Favorite Albums of 2023 video, Joe is running down a long list of honorable mentions. 75 of them to be exact. From pop-country to metal, art rock to r&b, it's a diverse list and, as the next episode will reveal, quite a different one from Jason's.

I tried to make a top 100 myself and trying to figure out the bottom was so much work! I definitely commend you guys for following through. I did come out with a ranked top 50 that I am happy with. I heard 415 new releases and I am a bit surprised by how many of these I didn't hear. Guess that just goes to show how many albums are out there!
There're some here that were nice to see fairly high like Doug Paisley. I didn't do a comparison of matches since I don't have a top 100 but you mentioned a few that make my top 50.
Major kudos to you two for your presentation of this much music in a knowledgeable manner. Hearing Joe's 75 albums he liked makes me realize I have a fair idea about who maybe 15 of these groups/artists are, the others I've never heard of. Makes me feel old/obsolete at the age of 52!! Keep up the good work!!
I also noticed that about this year's batch of albums. I don't recognize a lot of the names. Most of the prominent artists of previous decades are absent.
Boooyyyzzzzz.....interesting selection there.....some, like Jason I'd never heard of and donwloaded a few to spin.....thanks
This is tremendous. Have been looking forward to this for a month and that was when I thought it'd be top 10s! Cut back on album listening a lot this year because there was no time, so I don't know how you're doing it.
Joe - "What if I'm missing out on my number one?"!!! I died laughing. So many damn albums.
Yup - and still I am sure that my Top 5 albums are not even in their Top 100. 😆
I’m happy you’ve expanded your lists!
Some of my top albums are mentioned here.. just placed far too low. 😂
Others that I never got around to piqued my interest after Joe’s descriptions.
A very diverse list, as I’ve come to respect, appreciate, and expect from Joe.
Jason subscribes to the old adage that 'an album a day keeps the doctor away'. (sorry) I, quite frankly, don't know how you guys find the time, but I'm glad that you do. I'm retired now and started this year with the intention of 'playing along', but inevitably find myself listening to back catalogue albums, new (to me) discoveries, basically I find it impossible to confine myself to one specific year. For example, I learned of the Zamrock band WITCH this year, and dug their compilation, which (NPI) in turn can find me going in still other directions. So much music, so little time. Thanks, again, for what you do.
Ideally, at least 3 a day. Today I listened to 6. If I didn’t have specific things to listen to for the channel the winning formula would be 1 new release I hadnt heard yet, something old I’d never heard before, and something familiar.
I think we have around 5 or 6 that overlap. My list only goes up to 40. Thanks for the Em Gryner reference. I'll have to check out her album. She was a back-up singer for Bowie around 1999-2001.
I totally forgot to listen to Mon this year. - Joe
I used to listen to Emm Gryner back in the day, good to know that she's still going. She's cool with a good vibe. She did a cover of "Say It Isn't So" that I have a lot of time for!
@@TastesLikeMusic Thanks for the heads up. Otherwise I would have been deeply disappointed to not see her in your top 100.
I only formally ranked 50 albums, but I do have a long-ish list of 45 or so unranked albums that I also obtained in 2023. So here they are:
Xoth - Exogalactic (a fantastic sci-fi tech death metal that I only heard for the first time in the last week; would have definitely made my top 20 if I had heard it before finalizing my list)

Primitive Man/Full of Hell - Suffocating Hallucination
Guided by Voices - Welshpool Frillies
Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS

Well done mate! Truly impressed with the number of albums you guys listened to. Queens should be higher though. Even mid Queens is better than most.
Kyuss > QOTSA
I think I’ve heard about 50 albums this year….I probably listen to 10 albums from this list. You guys both gave me some recommendations. Appreciate it guys
Cool list. A lot of albums I have not listened to and a good number of artists I haven't even heard about - and I listen to and read a lot about new music, LOL. I found a few that I need to listen to - thanks. Oh, and by the way: What happened with Kramzer? When did he leave the channel?
Like two weeks ago. Just up and quit.
@@TastesLikeMusic Damn. Well, I hope he returns but glad to see that you two are still going strong.
I totally approve of this expansion.
Very interesting list! Now I have to listen... ❤

Pleasantly surprised to see the new Scream album show up. I thought it was quite uneven, but I always like to see really obscure picks in the mix.
good list , a couple i didnt hear , you have 1 on here i have VERY high 💜💜
@@bengalgangster Thank you, bengal. I am curious to see which album you had very high. 🎶💜💜
@@echosmyron1278 DC Special was the first album of theirs that I listened to. I don't remember this band from back in the day.
The Hypnogogue by The Church is a very good album. I'm a fan but I was pleasantly surprised by this, better than their past couple.
Thanks for carrying on w/o K, your insights are treasured. Wish for more rock/metal, but hey, you only have two ears. Screw the mainstream critics, but Sufjan and BG are objectively really good LPs. thx.
Little disappointed in metal this year. - Joe
Didn’t expect to see Dark Side of the Moon Redux in the top 25!
Excited to see its placement

i feel i have the stones lower than most, depeche mode makes a surprise appearance for me, margo price usually not bengal core but i enjoyed the album!
eamonn mccormack , duane betts, and kenny wayne shepard keep the guitar in [play for me, ] I wish i could go higher for the hives , a slight disappointment as i was pumped for that release Cheers
🐯🐯
4 of them in my top 25.
@@RostyslavLogachov nice , sounds like a good list🐯
Great list, bengal. I will check out the Margo Price album. I have some classic acts on my list. 🎶💜💜
@@weirddebbiem1619 cool thanx deb margo price has the song with mike campbell i like 💜💜
@@bengalgangster You're welcome, bengal. Cool that Mike Campbell played on a song. 🎶💜💜
Chaos County Line by Skating Polly is the best album of the year
yep I’ve missed wayyy too much music this year my “to listen” albums list is insane. I’ve got a top 100 but I’m sure I’ve missed many that would have made it in.
Thank you for at least waiting til the year was almost over 🥳
This year, I didn’t hear anything noteworthy that was released in December.
In previous years, there were some surprisingly good releases that dropped late. One that comes to mind is Purple by Baroness in 2015 (also their last truly exceptional album, I guess).
@@echosmyron1278 Peter Gabriel, although he squeaked in on the 1rst. Still too late for some knuckleheads who blow their load too soon.
ah completely forgot about Dead club city really enjoyed that album!
Ouch 79 Genesis Owusu 🤕 it's in my top 10. His debut was my number 1 in 2021.
His new album lacked hooks. Still decent though, as he is a compelling vocalist.
26. Icarus Witch - No Devil Lived On
27. Screamer - Kingmaker
Thanks for the video fellas.
A bit off topic, but why not ask. Anyone have headphones recommendations purely for music listening in the $200-$500 range
Thanks!
I used AKG K240’s which aren’t high end or anything but they’re good and pretty much the standard in broadcasting and many studio applications. They’ll only run you 50-100 bucks.
@@TastesLikeMusicthanks! That price point is very appealing . I’ll do a bit of research but im thinking I’ll pull the trigger
You guys are too fast for me. I'm still listening (and re-listening) to the year- so many freakin albums! I'll try to have a list ready by the time you post your top 20s.
You have 2 days
@@TastesLikeMusic 😧😅
Yves Tumor and Sufjan Stevens were also on my list.
The Prog scene frequently champions Haken of course..they're not my thing tho.
They’re the most interesting of the prog bands that kind of sound like the 70s to me. - Joe
Follow up trivia for Joe's number 26. BBC Radio 1 listeners voted Welcome to the DCC by Nothing but Thieves the hottest song of the year. 4 days a week they play a new song that they call the "hottest record in the world" and it won the poll of those.
Ohh very interesting. I guess they still like rock over there. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusicI would say it's hanging in there. It does seem to be much more of an album than a singles thing though. The single only got to 97 while the album was number 1.
You know what Joe 100 gecs do be like that don’t know if you like or or hate it!😂
Will you do most disappointing/overhyped albums?
I might. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Fine, I will save my thoughts for this video.
So the kids aren't listening to Olivia Rodrigo? If they are, then rock is not dead, right?
With Lana, Sufjan, The Tubs, Boygenius and Wilco you manage to have 5 of my top 10 in your bottom ranks. 😱
He listened to over 200 albums. None of these are bottom ranks.
Is Rebecca Black still doing the pop/scholck thing? No, never mind, I don't care. But, why did it make Joe's list?? Odd.
Just figured out that I don't have 100 3.5 stars albums this year.. so here some random albums on that range:
1. Every Loser - Iggy Pop
2. Relentless - Pretenders
3. Snake Sideways - Do Nothing
4. I/O - Peter Gabriel
5. Mercy - John Cale
6. I Inside The Old Year Dying - PJ Harvey
7. Orpheus Descending - John Mellencamp
8. The Devil Always Collects - Brian Setzer
9. Yay! - Motorpsycho
10. Darkfighter - Rival Sons
11. Everything Harmony - The Lemon Twigs
12. O Monolith - Squid
13. The Beggar - Swans
14. Say I Won't - Bass Drum Of Death
15. Married In Mount Airy - Nicole Dollanganger
16. Blues Deluxe Vol. 2 - Joe Bonamassa
17. Keep Your Courage - Natalie Merchant
18. No Place Like Alone - Xysma
19. Infinite Spring - Superviolet
20. RökFlöte - Jethro Tull

22. The Redshift Blues - Dispirited Spirits
23. Wide Open Light - Ben Harper
24. Calm Ya Farm - The Murlocs
25. Lotus Unfolding - Ozric Tentacles
Listing these albums even make me wanna to relisten to track or two per album mentioned to make sure if they as good as I remember!
great list , the pretenders are very high for me also , #4 🐯
I've noticed an unmistakably muted tone since Kramzer's departure.
I think everyone would feel better if the rather somber void was more openly addressed.
Why did he leave?
Many of us miss him and wonder why he's gone, a question which deserves a more forthright answer, in my opinion.
I love the channel and will continue watching.
Happy New Year!
His life was too busy to commit the time needed to the channel. Nothing more to it than that. The muted tone comes only from the lack of Kramzer’s energy, not from any bad feelings on the part of Joe or myself.
@TastesLikeMusic ,
Thank you for an understandable_ if regrettable_reply.
We all miss Kramzer, but you must miss him especially, considering your long-time friendships and the energy he brought to the channel.
Carry on, you're doing very well, all things considered.
I often marvel at your ability to encapsulate such a wide array of music in an enjoyable, educational, and entertaining manner.
Your deep reservoirs of memory are awesome to behold.
Blessings 🙏
Thanks. Rest assured we’re all still friends!
I like your channel but I'm a bid fed up with way you both present your video's. You choose to present the lists induvidually
while the other one is just sitting there and have no (speaking) comment. It is just non-verbal. For me that is boring. I am interested in what feedback the 'silent' participent has to choises of his partner. How you have to handle that is another question but anyhow the video woul be a lot more thrilling.
@paulwouters2025 our top 25s will be back and forth.
Thanks but i think maybe a top 30 by you guys would be better. I dont know how you can possibly rank 100 albums. So many albums are growers and take alot of listens for them to sink in. And those are often the best ones. I would rather yous talked in depth about your fav albums that have been on constant rotation throughout the year. But thats just my take obviously. Im guessing Hackney Diamonds is Joe's no. 1. 😂 Stuart
We are going to talk in depth about those ones. We can have it both ways.
Thanks for the reply, really appreciate you taking the time there! I tried to watch Jason's video 100 - 25 and had to stop it mid way. In my opinion there's no way you can rank 100 albums in any meaningful way. For me enjoying music means living with the album, getting to know it, so that you become emotionally attached to it and affected by it. Subtle albums are often the best ones. So I'll just stick to your top 25s. But whatever yous enjoy doing obviously, thanks for the videos!
The Blur record sounded more like a neutered Damon Albarn project. Only a couple tracks actually have any balls and rock. Too bad. That being said, it’s a good ball-less record. Like the previous album way more, though.
I'm find it boring too, 2.5 stars
@@RostyslavLogachov I found it boring too, was disappointed
No one can gainsay you all’s dedication to your craft. Thanks for listening to all the crap so that we can know what to avoid.
I would avoid those Fall Out Boy and Smashing Pumpkins albums in his top 50.
I’d avoid anything Echos has to say about music
Just gonna say it…
The channel is better. No hate but as a channel and as a watching experience…it’s better.
🍻🥳
Thanks. Plenty of votes to the contrary but we’ll take it.
Lol my 100 Gecs is way higher. 😅 And Lil Yachty.
The fact that these guys continue to be scared shitless of tackling or just seem to be too intimidated by the volume of Guided by Voices to even include any of their three Lps released this year is both hilarious and mind boggling
What are you smoking? You haven't even seen dude's top 25 yet.
Scared? I love me some 90s and early 00s GBV. The fact of the matter is that recently they’ve been releasing at such a furious pace that it’s affected the quality and the new stuff just frankly, isn’t worth talking about. -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusicI was mostly joking about the scared comment though have you listened to ‘Welshpool Frillies’? Far better than many of what Joe already listed in his bottom 75, especially the bottom 25, I mean how is Rebecca Black and Lil Yachty worth talking about yet the Geebs aren’t? Weird shortsighted argument
@@179richnot smoking anything this evening…yet, though I can almost guarantee they won’t be in the top 25

@@sofraYT i found it sad too that kramzer did not say good bye.😮
I never would've expected One Piece to be mentioned on this channel lol
Who knew Joe was such a nerd?
Where did Kramzer go??
The channel was taking too much of his time so he decided to step away.
@@TastesLikeMusic Well he’ll be missed!
Maybe he can be a part-time, “Junior journalist” and appear on occasional forthcoming shows? That would probably help us missing him entirely..
@@andykonrad4769 I'm sure they'd welcome Kram back with open arms if he ever wanted to come back. But it sounds to me like he's gone for good. He'll be missed, but I totally understand why he left- following along with everything this channel does is ridiculously time-consuming.
I think top 50 would be better.
