Jason and his Lo-Fi Indie love-in. I’ve literally heard of about 5% of the bands he’s mentioned since we’ve hit the 2000’s
yeah. I've stopped adding bands only on his lists at this point. They just haven't matched my tastes much at all unfortunately. But he loves tons of bands and isn't influenced by what's popular so good on him.

Good call on Midlake! I didn't find this album when I searched for what was released on 2006 but I love it
Slim pickings for me this year but Black Holes and Revelations, Begin to Hope and Back to Black (what a superb album!) would make my top 5.
This is definitely a homework year for me, and coming in first for homework (I can hear Jason's approval loud and clear) is Sloan. I've only just started listening to Sloan and I've been really impressed so far. When a band has their second album voted as the all time greatest album of that country, and that album beats out Blue and Harvest, then 1.) I really have to listen to this band, and 2). my "living under a rock" status is confirmed. Great work, guys! I really love this video series!!

Another fairly good post-2000 year. Muse the clear #1 with 2-5 all close to each other. Cheating a bit by picking two Dolly Rocker Movement albums for the #2 spot. Difficult to choose between these great neo-psychedelic masterpieces released the same year.
Great picks all around. Shout out to the Format, they played many times when I was in college. Excited to check out the albums I’m unfamiliar with!

This is a tremendous year, one of the two that I had been looking forward to since the end of the 80s. The biggest surprise for me was Back to Black, which I had remembered as a 2007 release. I kind of knew Kramzer was going to go w/ TVOTR; great album. Really surprised me when Joe called up the Scissor Sisters, one of the bands from 00's that doesn't get much love. It boggles my mind when I hear people, smart open minded people, say that there isn't great music being released anymore. It is just not high in charts, but there are constantly brilliant new albums coming out every year.

Turns out that Strokes album was released at the tail end of 2005 in Germany. Screw it, I'm just going to count it here since it was released everywhere else including the States in 2006. Chuffed to see I have a lot in common with Kramzer this year.
Yeah, initially I had that Strokes album on my '05 list but I went ahead and moved it to '06 since that's where everybody else has it.
If Stadium Arcadium had this 12-song tracklist it would've made my top 3:
1. Dani California

Hi Fran - You surprised me a bit. Thought you might have had Tom Waits' triple in the top spot. I remember liking some it and disliking some of it. Maybe too much music. We both have the Artic Monkeys up there. Just missed my top 5.
Hi Naughty, yes, not my favorite Waits' record, too much material, some great, some forgetable. I really like this Artic Monkeys album, awesome garage rock filled with energy. Cheers!
And there was I, thinking that 2004 would be the last year where I would find it easy to find a number of albums that I know and really like. For me at least, this year has greater depth and I think my selections are rather musically varied. I have ranked 12 but 9 to 3 are very close. For me to have a really good Muse album as low as I have is amazing. I think my number 1 will still be revered in 30 or 40 years time:
13 - Through the Windowpane - The Guillemots
12 - Stadium Arcadium - Red Hot Chili Peppers
11 - Costello Music - The Fratellis
10 - St. Elsewhere - Gnarls Berkley
9 - Ta-Dah - The Scissor Sisters
8 - Black Holes & Revelations - Muse
7 - Twelve Stops and Home - The Feeling
6 - Sam's Town - The Killers
5 - Broken Boy Soldiers - The Raconteurs
4 - At War with the Mystics - The Flaming Lips
3 - Whatever People say I am that's what I'm not - Arctic Monkeys
2 - Under the Iron Sea - Keane
1 - Back to Black -Amy Winehouse
As an aside, Sewn by The Feeling, Broken Boy Soldier by The Raconteurs, I Bet that You look Good on the Dancefloor by Arctic Monkeys, Hamburg Song by Keane and Back to Black by Amy Winehouse would probably make a list of my top 50 songs since 2000.
Must have been a bit of a Luddite, but I bought all of these on CD.
1. Tool - 10,000 Days
2. The Pineapple Thief - Little Man
3. Earl Greyhound - Soft Targets
4. As Tall As Lions - As Tall As Lions
5. The Frames - The Cost

6. At War With The Mystics-The Flaming Lips
7. Stadium Arcadium-Red Hot Chili Peppers
8. Straight To Hell-Hank III

Pretty loaded year. Can’t just do 5 this time
Tool- 10.0000 days
Muse- Black holes & Revelations
Amy Whinehouse- Back to Black
Beck- The Information
Deftones- Saturday nite Wrist
TV on the Radio- Return to Cookie Mountain
Gnarls Barkley- St Elsewhere
Hold Steady- Boys & Girls in America
I dig just about everything on your list.
I've discovered I'm firmly on "Team Absolution." The best 4 songs on Black Holes & Revelations are amazing but I think Absolution is the stronger album top to bottom.
I think I overplayed Absolution to death. It doesn’t hit quite as strong as it used to. Very unique sounding in their catalogue though. Hysteria a huge inspiration to me growing up as a bass player. It was my wonderwall, used to play it at parties. Only guys were impressed. - Joe
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Close call for me.
I've liked Hold Steady, Amy, and TV for awhile. I have been in a Josh Ritter, and Margot rabbit hole since checking out your albums of the year. Just recently discovered "Someone to Drive you Home" by The Long Blondes from this year and love it. Wondering whether it was on any of you guy's radar. Always fun.
I am kinda with Kram - The Hold Steady and TV On the Radio for joint win.
Another cool video. Cheers guys 🍻
Separation Sunday was the MUCH better Hold Steady album. Was my winner for '05
1. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not
2. Justin Timberlake - Future Sex/Love Sounds
3. Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
4. The Killers - Sams Town
5. Tool - 10,000 Days
🏆Friendly Fire -Sean Ono Lennon (he's got his father's gift for melody... does this count as another win for The Beatles? Heh-heh)
RUNNERS-UP:
▪︎3121 -Prince (starts a bit sluggish but really picks up steam in the middle... His Purple Majesty's 3rd and final appearance in my top 5)
▪︎Back to Black -Amy Winehouse (the music is kind of derivative and not every track is a home run but her voice can convince me of anything)
▪︎Broken Boy Soldiers -Raconteurs (this album has a 1970s throwback feel to it that I love)
▪︎St. Elsewhere -Gnarls Barkley (the best half-dozen songs are very memorable)
JUST MISSED THE CUT:
▪︎Magic Potion -The Black Keys
▪︎Black Holes & Revelations -Muse
▪︎Stadium Arcadium -Red Hot Chili Peppers
▪︎The Avacado Album -Pearl Jam
▪︎One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This -New York Dolls
LIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR:

Shoutouts to The Strokes, Camera Obscura, Bob Dylan, Gomez, Arctic Monkeys, Cat Power, M Ward, Neko Case, Belle & Sebastian, Sonic Youth, Beck, Sloan, Midlake, Grizzly Bear, David Gilmour, Ali Farka Toure, and Mogwai.
Listening to Stadium Arcadium again, I would agree that there are a few less than great tracks on the second disk. I would still probably give 3.5 stars to each. As I said before, for me the overwhelming majority of songs are stellar and enough to make it a five-star album.
@@179rich In the form it's in now it's, at best, a 4 star album to me. I have to wade through too much forgettable stuff to get to the good songs. Had they cut it down to the best 11 or 12 songs it'd probably get 4.5 from me.
Actually, only "Animal Bar" would I give 3.5 stars to. Everything else is at least 4.5 and mostly 5. Love that album. Funny, "Animal Bar" is one of the ones you like.
You are so right about Bruce’’s live album recorded in 1975. If it was acceptable, that would be my choice for favourite album of the year.
@@bryanbyrde8338 I listened to more live albums this week than I have for any year in the entire series. I thought Bruce & the E's concert from '75 was easily the best. There are at least a half-dozen "OMG, these guys are f&@#*ng amazing" type moments on it. When people question why I rate Bruce and his band highly on my "all time greatest artists" list I just point to their reputation as one of the greatest live acts ever. For me, a band's live reputation is even more important than their albums. The same thing goes for the Grateful Dead. On record, The Dead are good... but in terms of live concerts they're one of the very best bands who ever existed.

HM-
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped, Southside Johnny - Into the Harbour, Judy Dyble - Whorl, Eleventh Day Dream - Zeroes and Ones, Ali Farka Toure - Savane
5. Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac (An album about loss and grief that is not sentimental but painfully honest, like all her albums are. An album for those left behind by death and who need to carry on, memories and pain and all. Since she does not share her late father's religious belief, she has to come to terms otherwise and the New Orleans funeral march that ends the album reminds us of the importance to accept what is still there over what is lost.)
4. Radio Birdman - Zeno Beach (Another band that was away for more than 25 years, at least on paper. Deniz Tek was my winner in 1992 and appeared in my 1994 list and the band was never forgotten in their part of the world. Australia's answer to Detroit played rock 'n' roll with the freshness and enthusiasm they had back in 1981 on Living Eyes, not a single dull moment on their return album.)
3. Mission Of Burma - The Obliterati (The band became a highly influential cult act with a single album released in 1982 (plus an EP) with That's When I Reach for My Revolver being one of the most covered non-hits of the following decades. From REM to the Foo Fighters to Nirvana musicians declared them as a major influence. In 2004 they released a comeback album that was enthusiastically acclaimed even if it did not fully achieve the original standard. This second album of the comeback period however restores them. This is finely arranged art rock disguised as punk, drums crash like Bonham, driving bass and crystal clear guitar riffs. The energy of the performance is breath taking.)
2. Bob Dylan - Modern Times (36 years prior to this Dylan made the probably worst album of his career my simply covering the songs he loved with a bunch of studio cracks that played as if they accompanied the original artists. This time he rewrites classics like The Levee's Gonna Break - the same source that Led Zeppelin had used before - to make it his own song with his lyrics adapted to the Modern Times. His now-seasoned backing band knows what he has in mind not what the original writers - if those known even are the original writers...- had provided. Finally Dylan continues the line of folk musicians he had stepped into when he started his career. Like Pete Seger and Woody Guthrie had advised the younger players "steal it, that's the way I learned it from Leadbelly." This one rolls along naturally like a collection of classics that have always been there and that is probably what it was intended to do.)
1. New York Dolls - One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This (If 32 years ago it was Too Much Too Soon then this was Just In Time. There was nearly nobody else around able to play or write such classic Rock 'n' Roll anymore. It seemed that the two surviving members where enough to revive the old spirit. It was a high risk because the Dolls had grown into a legend that was bigger than the band had ever experienced during their existence. But David Johansen's writing had won 32 years of experience to draw from and his voice was as good as it ever had been. This is not a nostalgic record, Johansen always was smart enough to expand his sound and the majority of his solo records was nearly as good as the Dolls two albums. The surprise here is Sylvain Mizrahi who had stood in Johnny Thunder's mighty shadow before and who now wrote most of the tunes. A triumphant return of one of my favourite bands.)
Have to check out that Mission of Burma album. Was listening to The Sound, The Speed, The Light the other day and they still sound like they are in good form. Was turned on to Sylvain Sylvain not too long ago by the Pop Culture Graveyard channel. Really like his self titled album. Will have to give this Dolls release a listen.
Off the wall question: do you have opinions about Mink Deville?
@@burmajones803 Mink DeVille and Willy for me belong to those artists that I always listen to not expecting great revelations but good solid music. There are always a number of good tunes on the albums. Cabretta is my favourite, Spanish Stroll and Cadillac Walk (yes, it is Moon Martin, another one from that category of artists).

My Favorite Five, of 2006:
1. Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
2. John Southworth - The Pillowmaker
3. Pet Shop Boys - Fundamental
4. Man Man - Six Demon Bag
5. The Essex Green - Cannibal Sea
2006 is *definitely* a work in progress year for me - I might have a solid list in about a year, but I feel like many of my contenders I either have just started listening to or not enough yet. My most solid ones so far at the top are The Knife - Silent Shout, Sparks - Hello Young Lovers and The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia. There are a few very good albums that I don’t quite love like The Decemberists - The Crane Wife, Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit, Bruce Springsteen - We Shall Overcome and yup, TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain.
Figured Never Hear the End Of It would win for Jason based on his Sloan Listography. That’s a recent listen for me which feels like a lot to take in, and I have a feeling I might like it more once I get adjusted to the styles of each songwriter in that band. The Peter Bjorn & John, My Chemical Romance and Muse albums I think I only heard once so far, so no solid opinion yet (other than I’m finding the 90’s Thom Yorke-isms in the vocals a bit hard to get past with Muse in general - maybe they’re why Thom toned down singing like that on 00’s Radiohead albums 😂).
(Can't access my listened-to list right now, but off the top of my head:)
1. Joanna Newsom - Ys (greatest thing to ever be)
2. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
3. The Strokes - First Impressions (for me this one is the last of their great albums)
4. Cat Power - The Greatest
5. Thom Yorke - Eraser

2006 was the year I realized that you can't please everyone so best to be yourself; greatest decision I ever made -- Five Stars, highly recommend! 1. The Crane Wife- The Decemberists (They start to add some prog elements to their folk-inflected indie pop rock and the results make for an epic album with some great songs throughout. Sons and Daughters remains one of my favorite closing tracks of all time)
2. Boys and Girls in America- The Hold Steady (Indie sensibility meets Springsteen flavored classic rock. The lyrics are reflective and at times melancholy as Craig Finn looks back on the wildness and perhaps poor choices he made during his care-free twenties. But the music isn't sad or melancholy at all; this is a party album and it rocks! I reach for this every summer)
3. Yellow House- Grizzly Bear (although I discovered this years after. These guys are really good at evoking a certain kind of melancholy, reflective mood that is simultaneously transcendent and beautiful)
4. Songs that You Might Not Like- Boat (A fun little indie pop record from Seattle and an old friend- Great tunes throughout)
5. The Life Pursuit- Belle and Sebastian- (Speaking of indie pop, one of my favorite bands of that genre gets even more hi-fi- Another great summer record)

Yeah. 2006 was a pretty good year for music.
I am impressed with the Sloan selection. Enjoy the retro groove glam rock influence on the song Who taught you to live like that? though I had never heard it before hearing it mentioned on this show.
Drive-By Truckers - A Blessing and a Curse. Jason’s last album with them. Still one I return to again and again.
Not sure who (thought it was Kramzer) recommended it or when (thought it was the 2006 segment) but I just finished listening to Ray Lamontagne's TILL THE SUN TURNS BLACK. I was intrigued by the sound of the production but then totally sucked in by both Ray's voice and the quality of his songwriting. Thanks for the recommendation, whoever offered it!
Jason and Kramzer - so esoteric.
My runner-ups to the runner-ups are Isis - In the Absence of Truth, Tool - 10,000 Days, Ahab - The Call of the Wretched Sea. Muse and Arctic Monkeys bubbling under.
5. The Decembrists - The Crane Wife
4. Agalloch - Ashes against the Grain
3. Mastodon - Blood Mountain
2. Amorphis - Eclipse - I understand that many metalheads would consider this era on from this band to be a guilty pleasure at best, but I love the poop out of them. They absolutely hit the spot for me, and this is a great album imho.
1. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black. I would consider this one and Eclipse to be in my "near masterpiece" (4.5 stars) category; the other six are "great" (4 stars). I believe I have just two five-star albums the entire rest of the way to the present, and most here will flame the hell out of me for them.
The year I graduated from college, which made this an extremely strong and exploratory music year for me.

3) Tom Waits - Orphans
2) The Fratellis - Costello Music
1) The Format - Dog Problems
Three for three for me in 2006!
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
- For some reason they did a double album slighty longer than two hours. They really didn't need to do that. I think most songs are good or have good parts about them (like lyrics, bas or something) but it all just feels like a huge cake that nobody can eat up. They did mature over the years and that shows in some songs. Some are very catchy as well but it's just too damn long. I happily return to different songs now and again though.
Europe - Secret Society
- 80's rock band going very contemporary and it works. This album has some great energy and good songwriting. It has got lost in the shuffle over the years but is worth checking out. I think.
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
- I remember this album was a return to form but seems lost much respect over the years. I think it's pretty decent. Probably better than many make it out to be and perhaps a bit worst than what others say.
There’s honestly probably 2 songs I’d skip from Stadium Arcadium. I think it’s rightfully a double album and pretty solid one.
@@ThatFaceMelter94 Which songs would you skip from it?

Hello Jack: I kind of liked both RHCP and Pearl Jam from the 90's, but didn't follow either too closely after that. I tried listening to Stadium Arcadium but got a bit fatigued. My favourite album would have been Boris - Pink. Released November 2005 in Japan but everywhere else in 2006. Next favourite Blood Mountain - Mastodon and then Muse.
If an album came out in Japan in 2006, and the US in 2010, what year would you consider it for albums of the year?
Probably 06, depending on the specifics. But our general rule is the date of first physical release. -Jason
