🏆Sun -Cat Power (Chan's most energetic and hooky album yet)
    RUNNERS-UP:
▪︎Bloom -Beach House (I love the dreamy feel of this album and it has enough melodic movement to keep me interested)
▪︎Synthetica -Metric (I'm a sucker for the melodies Emily Haines writes... Metric's 3rd appearance in my top 5)
▪︎Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! -Godspeed You! Black Emperor (their 2nd appearance in my top 5)
▪︎The Lion's Roar -First Aid Kit (some really solid folk rock)
    JUST MISSED THE CUT:
    ▪︎Shields -Grizzly Bear
    ▪︎The Tempest -Bob Dylan
    ▪︎Old Ideas -Leonard Cohen
    ▪︎Melody's Echo Chamber (s/t)
    ▪︎Locked Down -Dr John
    LIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR:
    ▪︎U22: A 22 Track Selection From U2360° -U2
Shoutouts to Tame Impala, Sharon Van Etten, Smashing Pumpkins, Swans, Alabama Shakes, The Macabees, Cloud Nothings, Japandroids, Spiritualized, Gary Clark Jr, and Soko
Overall I thought it was a pretty weak year. My top albums got there mostly by default.

A fairly solid rather than great year for me. My list, other than my number 1, is dominated by acts whose earlier work I, by and large, slightly prefer. I think this is my first Antipodean number 1 (despite some near misses by Crowded House in particular) and edges out Muse's attempt to top my lists for a fourth time:

HM - Jimmy Cliff - Rebirth, Bobby Womack - The Bravest Man in the Universe, Graham Parker & the Rumour - Three Chords Good, Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby - A Working Museum , Ani DiFranco - Which Side Are You On?
    5. Corin Tucker Band - Kill My Blues (On her band's 2010 debut she stretched out in new musical directions but slightly withheld her passion. This time she lets it all out with the Sleater-Kinney rage added to her new found palette. The best of both worlds, as they say.)
    4. Mountain Goats - Transcendental Youth (This was already the the 14th album of John Darnielle's outfit and the best since Tallahassee a decade before. The stories about losers and outcasts are embellished by more sophisticated arrangements than on other albums. The band has made subtle but witty albums all the time but this one is more memorable than usual which does not mean that any of their releases was ever bad. It is one of the bands I always had on my short lists for the recent years but they were always kicked out by stronger albums.)
    3. Lee Ranaldo - Between the Times and the Tides (Of course I came to listen for some Sonic Youth on this album, but Ranaldo makes one forget about that pretty soon and instead invites to listen to his own statements. And...it is really worth to listen. He is a unique guitar player and shows it throughout the album - more than that, he is a very good and interesting songwriter who engulfs you with wonderful melodies. This is more of a rock album than his former band ever produced but there are enough off-mainstream moments that give away his sonic heritage.)
    2. Datsuns - Death Rattle Boogie (They needed a decade and their fifth album to deliver what they promised on their debut - the perfect classic hard rock album of their generation. This time you no longer search for comparisons to the great 60s and 70s bands as they have established their sound now. The tracks are a tour de force of riffs, fuzz and energy but with the finesse of strong memorable melodies and vocals throughout. Even in the heyday of the 70s you may have to search long and among the best to find an equivalent album. Great. Did I mention that this is the only 5 star album in this whole series that comes from New Zealand?)
    1. Dr. John - Locked Down (The first song I heard from him was 1970 Wash Mama Wash, they did not have the album in our record shop so I bought his older debut. Walk on Gilded Splinters and Jump Sturdy hypnotized me right away. He was 71 when he made Locked Down but he used the strength of his past to focus on the future. This album is one of his top ones and he rocks harder than he did throughout the whole previous decade. This is an album that starts already on a high note and then builds up with each song. The grandiose return of the original Gris Gris Night Tripper, a boiling hot funky stew.)

Hi Fran. Another interesting list. Nothing the same here. Had Beach House, Cloud Nothings, and a few others under consideration. I kind of missed Old ideas. Will listen. Beach House doesn't quite do it for me which is odd since I like psychedelic and shoegaze a lot. Hmmm. I tried. Cloud Nothings would have been on my list but I thought the record trailed off a bit.

Not sure about 2012 yet. Tame Impala - Lonerism, Frank Ocean - Channel Orange and Beach House - Bloom are probably the biggest contenders so far.
Looks like there’s gonna be quite the divide in Jason’s Clockwork Angels placement compared to Joe and Kramzer. 😉 I like it a good bit and consider it their best since Power Windows (probably a high 3-1/2 stars from me) but it probably wouldn’t be a contender if I heard a lot more from the year.

I also have Bobby Womack on my list. The songs and the voice are great, the production requires a bit to adjust if you are an old time Womack enthusiast (like me), but finally I could not but agree to the choices. To still embark on something new at the end of a career is quite bold and I have large respect for that. After all, the man had already made more than enough "conventional" albums.

Interesting choices. This year turned out to be better than I remembered. My winner was an album I forgot was released in 2012 until last night.
    1. Area 52 - Rodrigo y Gabriela and C.U.B.A. This is an amazing album. Rod and Gab went to Cuba, recruited a group of Cuban jazz musicians, and re-imagined their acoustic guitar classics. Rod returns to his roots and plays some electric guitar, guest artists include Anoushka Shankar on Sitar, the horns and piano and percussion are all incredible. If you like latin jazz, this album is a must.
    2. Blak and Blu - Gary Clark, Jr. No surprise here. Gary has been a standout for me this past decade. Started the week at #1, but slid when I relistened to Area 52.
    3. Boys and Girls - Alabama Shakes. Great debut. This album is better than I remembered, although it fades some toward the end. Also, could have used the song Always Alright, which somehow did not make it onto the album.
    4. Little Broken Hearts - Norah Jones. Norah joins her sister on my list with her best album yet. This album is dark. So dark. Not what anyone would expect from the piano and acoustic guitar balladeer.
    5. One Lovely Day - Citizen Cope. Another fine release from one of my favorite artists, although this is my least favorite album of his. Still, good enough for a top 5 finish.
    6. The Truth About Love - Pink. I'm not a huge Pink fan, but this one is special. It would have finished higher, but at over an hour it is just too long, especially with the filler.
    7. Battle Born - The Killers. A solid album, but not quite top 5 material.
    8. Blunderbuss - Jack White. Some great stuff on here, and some forgettable as well. Still, good enough for the 8 spot.

My choice for 2012 is probably based on sentiment more than reason but the final studio release from Rush was a strong finish to the career of a legendary band. Even an average album by their standards is much better than most others could produce at their peak:
    1. Clockwork Angels - Rush
    2. Genesis Revised II - Steve Hackett
    3. Blunderbuss - Jack White
    4. The 2nd Law - Muse
    5. Lonerism - Tame Impala
    6. Afterglow - Black Country Communion
I need some guidance from you guys about whether my second placed album is admissible, or whether it is classed as a compilation and therefore ineligible. Genesis Revised II is a reworking of many of the band’s classic numbers, plus a few of Steve Hackett’s solo tracks. If it is ruled out, my numbers 3-6 will all be moved up one place.

I find myself agreeing with Kramzer the most; just because of similar tastes. I would definitely have Spiritualized in Top 5; Frank Orange, Grimes, Surprised no one mentioned Tame Impala; the Maccabees, and Jack White's "Blunderbuss" was very good, but not as good as we hoped. Rufus Wainwright had a good album too. Celtic Bird mentioned Jake Bugg - forgot about that one.

    Rest in Peace Whitney Houston!
    Top 5
    5. Aerosmith - Music from Another Dimension!
    4. Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball
    3. Soundgarden - King Animal
    2. John Mayer - Born and Raised
    1. The Darkness - Hot Cakes
All of the four below deserve to be a top 5 album BUT I don't care for any or the
production on these. They all need an update / Steven Wilson remaster or something. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson
doesn't seem to be doing much.. Make a rework/remaster of Clockwork Angels the same way as what was done for "Vapor Trails". I'll buy it!
    Europe - Bag of Bones
    Rush - Clockwork Angels
    UFO - Seven Deadly
Van Halen - A Different Kind of Truth
Also. Look at the cover for Van Halens A Different Kind of Truth and compare it to the cover of "Movin' On" by The Commodores in 1975 :)
    Have a nice weekend everyone!

@@threestringsomg Yes! I do think Hot Cakes might be their most poppy record but it is a very solid one. I think many see the band as a one hit wonder or a corny act but listening to all of their albums I think they are very underrated AND Justin Hawkins is easily one of the best frontmen in years. I think so many currrent rock bands has singers that you couldn't point out a day later. Justin Hawkins is a real personality like David Lee Roth, Lemmy, Freddie Mercury and the rest of the classic gang!

Welp, I still have Babel at my top stop for 2012. I don’t consider it as strong as ‘Sigh No More;’ but still a great follow up (I lose them quite a bit from there). The Shins new lineup worried me a smidge, but I do think Point of Morrow is still quite good.
I’m not familiar with Beach House, but based on Jason’s picks here, and it’s description, will definitely give them some listens.
    My picks for 2012:
    1. AotY: Babel, Mumford & Sons (second nomination, second win)
    2. Point of Morrow, The Shins (fourth nomination, two previous wins)
    3. Fear Fun, Father John Misty-->I’m with you Joe and Jason
    4. Gossamer, Passion Pit

My third-to-the-last year not to be dominated by metal and metal-related material. I didn't care for Yellow and Green as much as the other Baroness albums, but I'll give it another listen at some point. Will definitely be checking out FJM, Wild Nothing (shoegaze and dream pop? I'm there), and Frank Ocean.

2012 was just okay for me overall but the stuff that hits- HITS
My top 5 for 2012 would be
    1. Alelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! - Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Post rock kings return with an album that would be their best since the early 00s until the album they put out this year.)
    2. Bloom - Beach House (most peoples favorite BH album, not really mine but damn its a good, accessible dream pop record.)
    3. The Money Store - Death Grips (give it another 5 years, this album will be considered iconic for the Expiremental-sphere, probably THE iconic album in that realm for this time)
    4. The Ilder Wheel.... - Fiona Apple (The moment where Fiona Apple was able to dissect herself to a t, heartwrenching self portrait)
    5. Good Kid, m.a.a.d city - Kendrick Lamar (a now classic, Kendrick had yet to reach his full potential sonically, but the writing, the storytelling, the grimey nature of it, the reallness.)

This year was more about singles than albums for me. Hearing "Video Games" (which was huge Down Under) got me into Lana Del Rey so - as with Kramzer - Born to Die might be my favourite album for this year. I didn't mind Oceania (speaking of old bands and acts bringing out new records) but I don't know if it would make a top 5 of the year if I even remotely had six or seven more albums I could compare it with. If only I liked Tame Impala. Sigh. Much more homework for me.

I used to love music; I don't like any anti-music from 2012. Even Dinosaur Jr released a lousy Quiet album and they are hard rocking. I listened to the top 50 of 2012 and some of the suggestions below. Did Beck have a record out that year? I might have to go with Neil Young "Psychedelic Pill". Soundgarden, Neon Trees (at least they try to keep older pop/rock alive where the rest don't have a clue).
