Another lump of grandma-rock this year.
I agree with Kramzer on the amount of good records this year, 26 with 4 star or better, even though only the top 2 are 5 stars. (I expected that 1 overlap with Joe...)
HM - Richard Thompson - Electric, Alpha Blondy - Mystic Power, Eric Burdon - 'Til Your River Runs Dry, Queens of the Stone Age - Like Cloackwork, Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks, Deniz Tek - Detroit
    5. June Tabor, Iain Ballamy, Huw Warren - Quercus (A lone saxophone, a piano, and a singer for 59 minutes? There is not a single minute I would want to miss, it is incredible which depth and atmosphere these three masters create while making it appear almost effortless. Is it folk, jazz - music like this needs no label and speaks to anyone with an open mind and open ears.)
    4. Wire - Change Becomes Us (Even though most of these tunes go back to original ideas from their first heyday in the late 70s/early 80s, the new approach is later day Wire at their best. Songs that were sketched for the successor of 154 are now the logical consequence of Red Barked Trees and this album is even better than both.)
    3. Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog - Your Turn (Sonic Youth meets Lounge Lizards meets James Blood Ulmer to really rock out. All this noise is at its heart very melodic and driven on by great rhythm momentum. At the center of each of these explosions is a song that stays with you once the record has finished. Take 5 has been waiting for decades for this treatment, worth alone to listen to this album. Avantgarde does not necessarily imply that the stuff is unlistenable, nobody needs to be scared by labels like Noise-Rock or Experimental.)
    2. Throwing Muses - Purgatory/Paradise (While Purgatory/Paradise is just the name of a street junction in their town, it also describes the extremes that the songs/snippets constantly take you to - not just between songs but sometimes even within a single short tune. The number of tracks and the album length already signal ambition, even more the single songs. But the sum is in fact much larger than the small parts and when listened to in sequence, it all starts to make sense.)
    1. Roy Harper - Man & Myth (The myth of the title is not himself but the topic he sings about although of course he is his own myth since five decades. The album starts harmless with an opener that takes off were One of These Days in England left 35 years before. But then...he sings about the times long gone - after all he was 72 now - with a voice that is the same that made his 70s albums classics. Pete Townshend adds some electric guitar that comes right from Quadrophenia. Of course the 16 minute myth of Jason and the golden fleece as delivered by the acoustic "one man rock'n'roll band" is another landmark in the man's own myth.)

Terrific list as always. Oddly enough, Vampire Weekend never really does it for me, :) however, I liked this particular album more than the others. Will give it some more listens. Nick Cave was a contender this year. Loved some of the songs particularly "Wide Lovely Eyes" which is one of the most beautiful songs of the year. Probably should have listed as a HM at least . . I plan to check out Tegan and Sarah.

Tegan and Sara's, Heartthrob!! Kramzer - thank you so much for introducing me to this incredible album! I cranked up CZcams and from the first moment I fell completely in love with it. But my album of the year would have to be Pure Heroine. I simply adore this album! When I put it on the stereo, I find it very difficult to take it off again. Not a great year for me, but still strong at the top. My top two were locked in from the start. Number 3 was a pleasant surprise. The more I listen to that album, the more I like it. Numbers 4-10 are all essentially tied. Each went up and down my list this week. All start strong, but fade on the back end. The biggest drop was Mosquito, which started the week at number 3 but fell upon subsequent listens.
    1. The Next Day - David Bowie - Tremendous surprise birthday drop. Bowie's last true rock album is a gem featuring his best song in 30 years.
    2. Reflektor - Arcade Fire - Not their best collection of songs, but the studio production finally captures the magic of their live performances. I have the special edition, which is even longer than the 2 disc standard edition. The standard edition is the better version
    3. Seasons of Your Day - Mazzy Star - Huge surprise that this one ended here. Just consistently good from beginning to end whereas the the next 7 are a mix of great and not so hot.
    4. Pushin Against a Stone - Valerie June - A very unique voice in music. Many different styles here, but all good.
    5. AM - Arctic Monkeys - I expected this one to finish higher, but still has some great songs. My favorite AM album.
    6. Mosquito - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Started the week at 3, but some weak stuff in the middle caused it to slide to 6. Best production, but a few too many wasted moments for a top 5 finish.
    7. The Electric Lady - Janelle Monae - Incredible songs but way too long and too much filler. I know it tells a story, but some chapters should have been edited out.
    8. Right Words Right Thoughts Right Action - Franz Ferdinand - Their weakest album to date, but still good enough for a top 10 finish.
    9. The 1975 - Impressive debut, but also compromised by filler.
    10. Night Time, My Time - Sky Ferreira - Funny story about this album. I absolutely love her song "Everything is Embarrassing." I wanted to buy the album, so I put this one in my cart at Amazon. Other priorities popped up, and sat in the cart for three years. I finally listened to the full album, and found that the song I loved isn't even on it. It was on the EP from the previous year.

They were pipped by Wilsons Raven That Refused to Sing bit of modern prog genius though...the Next Day would be my no 1 if had been released as double album to include the essential extras....which are brilliant...the weight of all that peerless song writing would have left me no choice but to crown it...

Some interesting lists from you three. I have one from each of you in my 10. I don't think that has happened for a while. And you list others I will have to search out.
I appreciated you clarifying your thoughts on Vampire Weekend, Kramzer. I must be living under a rock because the hype machine had not reached Beatles proportions in earshot of me. This 3rd LP is something special though. I probably feel the crushing hipster accolades with the National and Arcade Fire. I have tried but both leave me cold.
Joe, you have been on this public channel critiquing music for a year. I think you have to face facts and admit you are a critic. You are officially one of them.
Two songs from LPs that didn't make my list are worth noting. Cayucas - High School Lover and Phosphorescent - Song For Zula. Both instant classics.
    There were a lot of LPs I loved this year. White Denim/Savages/She & Him/Steve Earle/Josh Rouse/Janelle Monae/Eleanor Friedberger/Arctic Monkeys/Laura Marling/Lorde/Ron Sexsmith/Broken Bells/Atoms For Peace/Wire are ones I wanted to fit in but couldn't
    10 for '13
    Desire Lines - Camera Obscura
Keyboard player Carey Lander passed away soon after this LP and Camera Obscura has unfortunately been on recording hiatus ever since. Melodic, pop that will make your heart ache. Not their best but wonderful nonetheless. New Year's Resolution and Fifth In Line To The Throne are classics.
We are The 21st Century Ambassadors...- Foxygen
Great to see this on Jason's list. Foxygen's 3rd but the first to get my attention. At times they remind me of Dylan and at other times Sparks. It is an intoxicatingly chaotic blend with some very pointed lyrics.
No Destruction and San Francisco were the hits that never were.
Wise Up Ghost - Elvis Costello & the Roots
A sadly neglected LP. if Elvis' lyrics create their meaning through tone & context rather than literal interpretation, what happens when he moves that tone & context? If Wise Up Ghost is any indication the re-configured lyrical motifs breath new life into his word-play without denying any oxygen to their original home.
Their new context is set to a Roots groove that coerces Elvis to sing with more melody and restraint than he has shown in some of his post-Millenium releases.
    Dream River - Bill Callahan
His 4th LP since abandoning the Smog name. Dream River is a beautiful rumination on all things Callahan. Observational lyrics that can cut you deep, make you laugh, and tell a heck of a story. Deceptively simple, reduction of excess is the path that Bill Callahan has been traveling. Down to the essentials, Dream River is beautiful.
    Fade - Yo La Tengo
Following on from Popular Songs, Yo La Tengo has become almost minimalist. Between the two LPs, they had contributed to the benefit LP for Flying Nun founder and Toy Love/Tall Dwarfs leader Chris Knox who had suffered a stroke. ( A great compilation called Stroke).
And Fade bears the hallmarks of some of Chris Knox's more restrained efforts. It was nice to see that one of the architects of the Dunedin sound was still holding sway.
    Days Are Gone - Haim
I am with Joe on this one. A pop classic that wears its influences proudly but still sounds as new as anything in 2013. The harmonies are as good as you would expect from three sisters. It is impossible not to be pulled along by their obvious love for the music they are making.
Tooth & Nail - Billy Bragg
Ignoring the Wilco collaboration this is Billy's best since 1991s Don't Try This At Home. And with No One Knows Nothing Anymore he produced one of his best songs ever. And one of two songs in my top 10 that reference the Higgs boson particle. It really was in the public consciousness in 2013.
The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas - Courtney Barnett
A total cheat as it compiles two previously released hard-to-get EPs as an LP. But it is longer than 30 minutes.
For most of us, this was our introduction to Courtney Barnett. The single-handed argument that lyrical prowess is not a thing of the past. Her wordy tongue-twisting lyrics would be hell to cover but work perfectly for her.
Come for Avant Gardner, stay for the rest.
Push the Sky Away - Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
I had affection for The Birthday Party but Nick Cave's solo work was always very hit and miss for me. Until 2004's Abbatoir Blues/Lyre Of Orpheus. And Push The Sky Away continues the upward trend. Finally, Nick Cave has grown into the schtick he adopted very early on. The weary preacher is adamant he doesn't know the answers. He carries the gravitas of the role now and it is powerful.
With Higgs Boson Blues the 2nd LP in the list to reference the particle.
Modern Vampires Of The City - Vampire Weekend
I enjoy the first two LPs a lot but this is the one that really breaks them from the pack. The hype may be overwhelming but 8 years later and this LP still makes its way into my rotation pretty regularly. They have been advancing with every LP and I am loving the ride. Co-writer, co-founder, and producer Rostam Batmanglij left after this LP. So, where to from here?

best year in music for the decade for me. when i look back nostalgically on pop music from this era (early to mid 2010s) the hits fron this year stand out as both catchy and have aged very well, meaning there is not as much cringe stuff. the edm stuff really hit its stride this year, which i prefer over the four-on-the-floor club stuff from the late 2000s-early 2010s but i love both genres. solid year in hip hop and country. but this year really stands out for its rock and alternative. lots of comebacks and lots of great albums. queens of the stone age, arctic monkeys, vampire weekend, paramore, fall out boy, panic at the disco and others put out great albums this year. also a lot of great music that released at the very end of 2012 bled into this year. also a lot of the biggest pop acts of the decade dropped some of their best work this year (or late 2012).

    My list:
(Honourable Mentions: Sleaford Mods - Austerity Dogs, Chvrches - The Bones of what you Believe)
    Good Albums (3 Stars):
    5. Lebanon Hanover - Tomb for Two
(Cool Post-Punk/Darkwave. They will release better albums in future years, but ‘Gallowdance’ is a classic.)
    Really Good Albums (4 Stars):
    4. These New Puritans - Field of Reeds
(This is a pretty unique album. I would call it Art Rock-esque but has a unique classical touch to it. Great songs on here. This is one to prove people wrong who say ‘There is no original music anymore’.)
    3. OneRepublic - Native
(For a Pop band a very consistent album. Even the deep cuts are great songs. ‘Burning Bridges’ is probably their best song.)
    2. Twenty One Pilots - Vessel
(So, I guess everyone hates this band, but I think they’re pretty good. The lyrics are interesting, sometimes a bit too try-hard depressive but it’s alright. The songs are also cleverly written and mostly pretty catchy. Great album.)
    1. Depeche Mode - Delta Machine
(DM’s most underrated album. The blues may be a bit too much, but the synth sounds on here are some of the best they’ve done and the songwriting is also great. The songs written by Dave Gahan are actually the better ones on here. It feels a bit like Martin Gore has lost some of the magic he had.)

2013 was a great year for music but to me there was only one Perfect record released. LIQUID SPIRIT by GREGORY PORTER. It is his third album and first released by the legendary Blue Note label. Mr. Porter and his flap cap might not be very hip but when you have a once in a generation voice, who cares. In less than 10 years of release, this is already a jazz classic. His voice is so beautiful and so athletic and technically impressive that it almost physically hurts to listen to him at times. When Love Was King made me cry the first time I heard it. The song Wolfcry is an absolute masterclass in singing. Vocal jazz, and music in general, does not get much better than this. I rank it a hundred ShihTzus.

My favorite album of 2013 is Orthodox by Beware of Darkness. This band (yes, named after the George Harrison song) had a mildly successful rock radio track called "Howl" with strong Zeppelin vibes which also served as the lead off track to this album, but I think the song may have given people the wrong impression of the album as a whole. Rather than a straightforward hard rock album, Orthodox is a deeply personal exploration of grief, depression, and the struggle of self-improvement. The voice of frontman Kyle Nicolaides can be a tough sell, as the voice is a bit "ugly" for lack of a better word, but he's really quite soulful (with R&B influence) and pushes the limits of emotional expression (almost like emo, even though the music on the album is not emo). It's easy for me to become lost in the immersive, introspective world the album presents, with highlights including "Amen Amen", "Morning Tea", "End of the World", and "Salvation is Here." Not sure why this album speaks to me so much, but I just love it!
The rest of my top 5 is-
    2. A.G. Cook- Radio Tank Mix- another lesser known one (although this guy's fame is rising due to Charli XCX), I think you can only find this on Soundcloud but great futuristic, avant-pop, bubblegum work, almost like a happy Kid A.
    3. Vampire Weekend- Modern Vampires of the City
    4. The 1975- The 1975
    5. Portugal. the Man- Evil Friends

You are the only other person I've seen who has Evil Friends by Portugal. The Man... I love that record. It was my first runner-up this year. Only The National's Trouble Will Find Me kept it out of the top spot.

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Yeah it's a great album, Danger Mouse production at his best, my favorites are "Creep in a T Shirt" and "Atomic Man", I just played those on repeat like crazy. I like that album by the National too, just kinda need to listen to everything by that band a bit more.

Wow I think that Chvrches album is the first one I have in common with Jason on an AOTY, at least as an Honourable Mention. Never thought I would have a record in my list that he has haha. Maybe I have to look back to 2002, because that Wilco record seems to be really good and I didn't know it when I made the list.

The only two albums I've heard from 2013 are Paramore's self titled and Deafheaven's Sunbather and I love both, but I think I have to give the edge to the former.

I like these late era lists now, because so much great stuff is coming out; and it is almost impossible to keep up, and digest it all. The last few years I keep getting good pointers from you guys. Joe is totally on the $ about the Kanye album. I know it is good, even very good, but it is a chore to listen to. I would add Nick Cave, IMO one of the few artists who has gotten better and better with passing years. You guys don't seem to like him too much. The Savages - GREAT band; MBV, Deerhunter, Phoenix, McCartney's album was very good, Blood Orange. Edit - just reading other folks' comments - how could I forget Foxygen, Arctic Monkeys, Cage the Elephant, and Suede? Even my main guys Primal Scream put out an album - and I love all their stuff.

For me 2013 was dominated by Random Access Memories from Daft Punk and the self-titled debut from The Winery Dogs in constant rotation.

Also really enjoy the soundtrack to "Sound City - Real To Reel" headed up by Dave Grohl and a bunch of other great artists. Paul McCartney with 2/3's of Nirvana doing "Cut Me Some Slack" is fantastic.
