- Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 2013!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

Song of the Year: The Next Day - This song rocks. Probably Bowie's best track in over 20 years.
Great Bowie tune!
Dang! I forgot about Yo La Tengo. Love the whole of Fade and Ohm is the perfect leadoff track
A spectacular year. Bowie was back and brilliant (at least on Where Are We Now?), Midlake showed they could still be stunning post Tim Smith, Lorde emerged from and sang about small town obscurity, while Vampire Weekend, John Grant, and the Manics were all at the top of their games.

Strong year with a couple of great albums -only one in common with any of your lists and in no particular order
1. Sirens - Pearl Jam
2. Glacier - John grant
3. Do I wanna know - arctic monkeys
4. Are you mine - arctic monkeys
5. Little coloured balloons - John murry
6. Waking in a pretty day - Kurt vile
7. Surrounded - Richard Buckner
8. Sleep apnea - beach fossils
9. Reflector - arcade fire
10. Jubilee street - nick cave
I didn't have time to respond yesterday so I am sure the caravan has moved on but wanted to post my Top 10. I thought it was a strong year at the time and looking back it seems the same.
Having said that I don't look at the charts. The middle-aged guy music I gravitate to now is not represented well in the charts.
And being the middle-aged guy in music mortality is a prominent theme. This year particularly the new Hadron Collider and its search for the God particle (both Nick cave and Billy Bragg have top 10 choices that reference it and Thom York's spin-off is Atoms For Peace)
Billy Bragg - No One Knows Anything Any More
30 years into his career and Bragg writes what may be his best song. Musings on the global financial meltdown, the god particle, and so much more.
Courtney Barnett - Avant Gardner
This song hangs like an albatross, so good it colo everything she has released since. But it deserves all the accolades. And she has released good stuff since, just nothing as clever and enjoyable as this.
Elvis Costello & the Roots- Tripwire
An underappreciated gem. his whole project has much for fans of both artists to love. Many of the tracks reposition earlier Costello pieces, Tripwire being in Satellite from Spike.
Cayucas - High School Lover
A totally overlooked pop classic. I don't know why this wasn't on everyone's list.
Atoms For Peace - Judge, Jury & Executioner
Thom Yorke's supergroup. An atmospheric, hypnotic, engaging experience.
Vampire Weekend - Unbelievers
The hype passed, the cool kids moved on and Vampire Weekend keep getting better. Almost any track off the album could be pulled as a highlight. But this song hits perfectly for me.
Bill Callahan - Small Plane
This sensitive, deeply moving song is a long way from the low-fi Smog origins of Callahan.
Eleanor Friedberger - She's a Mirror
Friedberger's second solo outing after the Fiery Furnaces hiatus. Pop classicism, with horns, melody, and charm.
Phosphorescent - Song For Zulu
Matthew Houck digs himself out of a bad place and we get this stirring, Johnny Cash-referencing mini-epic. Still moves me every listen.
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Higgs Boson Blues
Cave digs deep into pop culture travelogue past and present. All seemingly held together by the Higg's Boson God particle. Apparently improvised on the recording.
1) Cold Afternoon - The Dig
2) Stay Awake - London Grammar
3) We share the same sun - Stereophonics
4) Get Lucky - Daft Punk

I love the random inclusion of Bad Religion on your list (True North is only my 10th favorite BR album, so I don’t have a song from them in 2013). I recommend the songs “Shut Up” and “She Will” by Savages if you want to hear some more great punk music from 2013.
I had totally forgotten what my favorite songs were for this year. Also, Kurt Vile won my AOTY in 2013, which is one of the weirdest things ever, as I generally don’t care much for that type of laid-back jam-folk.

- Robert Ellis: Good Intentions

- Suuns: 2020
I’d also like to mention Eva Peterson’s cover of George Harrison’s Don’t Bother Me (which I cannot find on CZcams), released on MOJO August 2013 free CD We’re With The Beatles. Arguably one of the weirdest and best Beatles’ covers.

BILLBOARD
1. *Reflektor by Arcade Fire #99* (Their only charting song. Cool alternative dance track, with a little backing support from Bowie.)
2. *Get Lucky by Daft Punk #2* (Pharrell teams up with the French duo to form one of the best smash hits of the decade. Smooth 21st century disco.)
3. *Do I Wanna Know? by Arctic Monkeys #70* (Another one-off charter from a band that had been around for a while. A little Black Keys-esque here.)
4. *Treasure by Bruno Mars #5* (Hints at the Silk Sonic ahead in the future. Pleasant funky pop.)
5. *Team by Lorde #6* (Tastefully produced alternative pop that got some real mainstream attention. A couple choices from her could have fit.)
WILDCARD
1. WINNER: *Afterlife by Arcade Fire* (Recent news notwithstanding, another immaculately put-together dance track with just the right touchs of 80s. My favorite track of theirs on some days.)
2. *Adult Diversion by Alvvays* (Entering the scene with their brand of delightful, jangly indie pop. Precedes the 2014 debut album.)
3. *Archie, Marry Me by Alvvays* (Much like above, and their most well-known song of the first record. Consistent quality work.)
4. *Instant Crush by Daft Punk* (A vocodified Julian Casablancas guesting on a irresistibly catchy synthpop tune.)
5. *Red Eyes by The War on Drugs* (Assured heartland indie rock. Some backing touches go a long way to adding atmosphere here.)
Top 10 Wildcard HM:
We Exist by Arcade Fire
San Francisco by Foxygen
No Destruction by Foxygen
This one did feel like it had a deeper chart selection than the last while. There will be some rough ones still ahead, but I do generally have an impression these last 10 years will be a bit better overall. 2013 wildcards more strengthened by a few acts, and wound up being bolstered here by some singles released the year prior to their album.
Worst TOP 40: Radioactive by Imagine Dragons #3 (Overexposed, bro-ey, millennial pop rock with a hook that just get under my skin in the worst way.)
Worst Runner Up:
#thatPOWER by will.i.am featuring Justin Bieber #17
The Fox by Ylvis #6
All of your picks are going on my 2014 list. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Alvvays and War on Drugs. I suspect this year probably needed them more than 2014 will, but will be sure to give you credit as a match.

Ah, 2013, the year where I started to understand music and what was popular. I feel old XD

Applause to Joe for picking Applause. Maybe my favorite Gaga single. The verse parts are the best- "I've overheard your theory, Nostalgia is for geeks / I guess sir, if you say so, some of us just like to read."
Phenomenal choices, gentlemen! My #1 song of 2013 is Jason Derulo’s “Marry Me”. It’s such a beautiful pop song. Also, akin to another one of my all-time favourite artists Katy Perry, Derulo also ruled the late 2000s-mid 2010s! Furthermore, 2013 was one of the greatest years in music history, and one of my favourites! Have a great one, fellas! Take care! 😎

5. Cate Le Bon - Are You with Me Now? (When she moved from Wales to California, she picked up some Tom Verlaine on the way...great song from a transitional album.)
4. Les Dudek - Wide Open in the Wind (Those who read album credits will know that he played guitar with the Allman Brothers Band on their 1973 album after Duane's death. He recorded some good solo albums afterwards in the 70s but spent the following years mainly touring and releasing unremarkable albums once in a decade. His 2013 album is the same solid southern rock with occasional guitar highlights like all his others - just this one song captures the old Ramblin Man spirit perfectly.)
3. Courtney Barnett - Avant Gardener (Her EPs prior to her first album were a promise she did not keep later on.)
2. UB40 - Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain (Yes, the British reggae veterans cover Willie Nelson, up-tempo - steel guitar - ska horn section, sounds weird on paper but great on record. Remember that there is a long tradition between reggae and country like Toots' version of Take Me Home Country Roads.)
1. Deniz Tek - Twilight Of The Modern Age (On the album Detroit he paints a dark realistic picture of his birth place, the music is pure Stooges/MC5 onslaught. For those who agree that Kill City was a great Stooges album.)
Wow zero respect for QOtSA. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic They were in my AOTY nomination and so I skip them in this series to avoid redundancy. I never took any songs from my favourite albums for SOTY.
@@TastesLikeMusic Vista Chino > QOTSA
How the hell did QOTSA end up on Matador Records? Some of my all-time favorite indie bands like Guided by Voices, F***ed Up, Pavement, Ted Leo, and Car Seat Headrest have put out some of their best material on that label. QOTSA belong on a major label, period.
@@independenceltd. The Nick Oliveri band - the music is interesting, Thin Lizzy plays Kyuss, but the vocals and melodies are pretty weak. It is not bad but a bit too one-note.
S.O.T.Y: Wild Old Dog by Patty Griffin............Listened to all 3 songs....liked Joe's pick the best, Kram wasn't too far behind tho.
My favorite song of 2013 is Shot at the Night by The Killers. It's a fantastic synth-pop song and speaks a lot to me.
I love that Sky Ferreira album, and of course the massive Wrecking Ball. The definition of a modern pop song.
Very delayed this one (nearly a week), largely because of a family bereavement. My long list of UK chart hits contains 42 songs which is around the norm for this era. Something of a theme of rather haunting female vocals in my top 10 this year with Chvrches, Lana Del Ray and London Grammar. Lorde's massive breakthrough single and 2 songs from Haim's great debut means that women singers make up the majority of the 10. Alternative stalwarts Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon make further appearances together with the smash hit combination of Daft Punk, Pharrell and Nile Rodgers. My small list of acts with more than one long list appearance but no top 10 comprises Disclosure (3 songs), Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake (3 songs 1 as a featured guest):
Do I Wanna Know? - Arctic Monkeys
Why d’ You only call me when You’re high - Arctic Monkeys
The Mother We Share - Chvrches
Get Lucky - Daft Punk ft Pharrell Williams
Summertime Sadness - Lana Del Ray
Forever - Haim
The Wire - Haim
Supersoaker - Kings of Leon
Strong - London Grammar
Royals - Lorde
PS - by the time I made this selection I'd forgotten that Jason had made The Mother We Share his song of the year!
PPS - Reflektor by Arcade Fire was on my long list and might have made my top 10 if they weren't currently 'suspended'. It does speed up checking through the charts when I see songs by the likes of Chris Brown and Lost Prophets on there.
My #1... Justin Currie - Little Stars...
The worst... Katy Perry - Roar...

@@beetlebum7760 To be honest, I know too little of Shirley Collins to compare (her album with Albion Band from 1971, her contributions to Morris On, the songs that were on New Electric Muse). I never dug deeper since she always appeared to me like an English Joan Baez - good voice but very academic performance as if afraid to really touch the traditional material and make it her own. Hi Brent, Good morning 🌞 Paul’s KEXP performance is one of my favorites. The chemistry with his band and his vocal vulnerability make it a must watch. My faves from that album are Paid For That, Arise Awake, The Base, and Over My Shoulder. “You only know me like the shoreline knows the sea.” Such emotion in one simple sentence. That's ok Jason, Drake was actually good back then, nothing to be ashamed of.
A random thought re Katy Perry I've had of late. Mostly because there seems to be a proper backlash on her going on right now. And yeah, 'Roar' is not good, Katy can sing well enough, and you can't fault her work ethic, and she has really sold (as in entertained in performance) songs like 'I kissed a girl', 'Hot n Cold' and 'Never really Over', but my theory is, and it is what marks her out, is that she should have been a comedian. Like an SNL gig (and I know that's not a too high bar), but she does bring proper comedic chops to the videos. She really is genuinely funny, and that's not easy. So yeah, another timeline, I could see Katy Perry as a top screwball comedy actress. xxx :)
Another lazy take on the 2010s by Joe. This was a solid year. Includes two all-timer albums for me. Guess there’s no love for Vampire Weekend at this point. Going from 1972 to 2013 is like leaving the perfumed garden to go out into a salt-desert wasteland.

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Even if true, it is a bit unfair because the same could be said for any combination of 1970s vs 2010s...Accept it, it is not just another decade or century - it is a completely different millennium. Normally I would agree to that but....this was 1972 week and if you did a real deep dive there, your #500 may still be leagues ahead of any 2013 song. But most likely that is comparing apples and kiwis - and if you can't listen to the one you love, try and find some love for what you have to listen to...
I know. I couldn't even find room for Black Sabbath, Michael Monroe, Gamma Ray, The Answer, Deep Purple, Vista Chino, Gatekeeper, Tom Keifer or The Winery Dogs.😥
Someday I’ll be forced to go looking for it, but just a smattering of stuff I really liked. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic You don’t have to look too far - just listen to your lovely co-hosts & commenters lol We all can learn from each other 😊
Starting at about 2010, I've been fast-forwarding to the worst songs of the year, to see if they match any of the songs I've heard too many times on restaurant radio stations.
This is a great year I think, the return of Suede for one thing 😃
I had 3 songs that could’ve been my song of the year so quite tough picking my fave but here goes..
SOTY:
Take Me To Church - Hozier
The I have:
Heaven - Depeche Mode
Strong - London Grammar
It Starts and Ends With You - Suede
Graffiti On the Train - Stereophonics
Supersoaker - Kings of Leon
Happy - Pharrell Williams
Rip Tide - Vance Joy
Get Lucky - Daft Punk
Royals - Lorde
Cheers! 🇬🇧🇺🇸

@@bengalgangster Hey!! Yep it's a great song. I liked this year (unlike Joe 🤣). We're playing 3pm tomorrow at Chelsea, so another London derby. Not on the TV though so I'll have to listen to it on the radio 🙃 ⚒⚒🐯🐯
@@lubilou64 hi again!! thats some weird schedule this week ! not on tv anywhere ? no peacock? 🐯🐯⚒⚒
@@lubilou64 can you get peacock? its on there!
@@bengalgangster Nope, we don't have SkyTV, we have VirginTV and you can't get Peacock on there 🙄 Nevermind.
Going from 1972 to 2013 is a pretty rough transition
what is it with the Vs..Chvrches..Alvvays..
What a great year for all sorts of music but especially electronic.

Are these real. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic yes Joe they are all very real and cover a diverse range of genres. Not for everyone but I thought 2013 was a great improvement over the previous two.
Most of these songs aren’t even particularly obscure. Wire, Low, Throwing Muses and Gorguts had all released classic albums long before 2013. Autechre, Burial, The Knife and Board of Canada are some of the biggest electronic acts the world has ever seen. I do admit that a doom metal band like SubRosa can be deemed somewhat obscure, but anyone who knows Jellyfish and Teenage Fanclub should also be aware of most of the bands above. The only one I’ve never heard before is Shackleton.
As always you listed some things i missed. I was into The Drones whern they first came out but didn't follow up much after the third album; I'll have to get on that. 20 years ago i never would have listened to Burial or Tim Hecker; too much of a rockist, I guess. But, at some point, a switch flipped and I have been getting more into electronic music, soundscapes, etc. Two recent ones that may be up your alley are Searching Erskine by Arun Sood and the self titled Sedna Chronicles.
@@johnlefsky8731 thanks. There was a big surge of great electronic music artists around this time. Others I forgot to mention are 36, Forest Swords, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Actress, Andy Stott and Jlin. Shackleton and his various projects continue to impress . I'll check out the ones you mentioned.
100% agree with Joe.
Jason wins.
Hearing what Jason said, you guys need to do the opposite to 1972 and do a top 10 list each of the worst songs of 2014.
Yes, that Tegan and Sara song was a pretty big hit here in Canada, as was "I Was a Fool". I still hear both sometimes on the radio.
- Kesha - C’mon
- Daft Punk feat. Pharrell & Nile Rodgers - Get Lucky
- Lana Del Rey - Young and Beautiful
- Mariah Carey & Miguel - # Beautiful
- Tegan and Sara - Closer
Wildcard:
- Lindi Ortega - Hard As This
- Dawes - Just Beneath the Surface
- Queens of the Stone Age - …Like Clockwork
- Pistol Annies - Hush Hush
Worst: I'm going with the worst of two worlds with "Cruise (Remix)" by Florida Georgia Line feat. Nelly. I just hate this song so much and it was inescapable back in 2013. I just hate that style of country so much especially as a country fan.
First: Has to be something of an album I love a lot, a bunch of songs from this album were in the running but I am going with "Demons" by The National. Just a song that still hits me really hard every time I hear it, I really love the lyrics to this one (and the whole album).
That album got pretty terrible reviews from many influential publications (and Fantano gave it a 3/10) so it’s not surprising that it didn’t generate much buzz.
Best song of the year: Everything is Embarrassing by Sky Ferreira
Worst song of the year: Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke feat. Pharrell & T.I. (One of the worst songs I’ve ever heard in my life. And, I CAN’T BELIEVE none of you had this song as the worst!)
Not including music you like because of who the artist is in their personal life is so bizarre to me.
Jason...dude...considering you think that Alpha Zulu song is annoying, I'm shocked you don't find that "Oh Oh Oh" Churches song annoying as well. I find it significantly more annoying.
I voted for Kram this time around even though I'm not that fond of any of the songs.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Really surprised Jason likes that teeny bopper song. If "Para Para Paradise" is annoying, this one has gotta be as well lol
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I like Kram's choice a lot but I gotta go with Joe.
Shockingly, the teeny bopper song is ahead.
Cause it rules.
That Passenger vocalist does have a weird voice and there's something overly familiar about the melodies in that song.
Yeah, that voice is really annoying.
Joe, you should have filled up your wildcards with Queens of the Stone Age since you didn't really like your other selections that much. Many great QOTSA songs to choose from.
True. I didn’t bother listening to anything though. Year sucked too much for me to care. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic That doesn't really make sense, but I'll let it slide since you were bummed.
So sad to see the hatred for The Lumineers lol. Granted, they aren’t the greatest band in the world, and “Ho Hey” is average at best…but I think their sophomore album (Cleopatra) is really strong.
I love Ophelia .. it’s a sweetheart of a song
They suck. They try to be Neutral Milk Hotel and other indie folk bands, but they’re just completely bland and void of any real emotion or tact or relatability. That song of the same is very fitting, because all they do is just a bunch of “ho”s and “hey”s. Trash.
My opinion on Lorde is as far as mainstream pop music goes I guess they are good songs by those standards but her music was all over alternative rock radio and as someone who grew up on 90s alternative music, her music and many others like it stuck out like a sore thumb and I wasnt into it. At least Alanis Morissette in the 90s who was also a alternative AND pop artist you at least got some rock but by the time we got to Lorde its was like, nope you get no more rock, its dead.
Another common theme with this video was "this sounds like the 60s", "this sounds like the 70s", and "this sounds like the 80s" well if by 2013, youre ripping off so much old music, it kinda means music is dead, no ? When disco was popular it got hated and shit on but Daft Punk ripping off disco in 2013 is somehow ok. I dont get it.
The styles from those decades are good enough that being influenced by them I would think is a positive. Disco should never have been hated the way it was, especially not the cream of the crop.
You see all the old videos about how disco was hated and then the 2010's comes and everyone from Arcade Fire to Daft Punk has disco beats in their songs and nothing negative is said about it so its a bit weird to see.
@@Chaz4543 I got the sense there was a sociopolitical thing going on with that original backlash. Perhaps also a generational divide too. We've seen something similar with the 80s and synths returning to acclaim after some rougher attitudes about it 20 years ago.
@@TimeToGetAlone The "sociopolitical thing" was that it got popular and the media got on board and shoved it down your throat in tv, movies, radio, etc. So much so that everyone and their mother were doing some kid of disco-this or disco-that. And in the late 70s you couldn't as easily escape it as you could today.
@@independenceltd. I'm sure that's a factor as well. Wouldn't the ability to more easily escape overplay be a good answer to the critical re-evaluation happening then?
Shouldn't Haim be pronounced "Hey I'm?"
No.

Hi M ! 👋
Joe is the best (2013 sucks). Joe, you were born way too late. God rarely makes mistakes so I'm not sure how that happened (well, I know, but in case it's not obvious I'm just being not very funny)

#2 Time Is Temporary - Roy Harper
#3 All The Time - The Strokes
#4 Year Of The Glad - Marnie Stern

You Feel So Lonely You Could Die - David Bowie
Carry Me Over - Anna Calvi
I Should Live In Salt - The National
Fall Out Of Love - Toy
Livingstone Bramble - Mark Kozelek & Desertshore
Man & Myth was my AOTY in 2013, the only case that I remember an artist with a 5 decade career to finish it with a 5 star album.
@@roxannewalsh Wow! I am a BIG Harper fan and he got my AOTY in 1970 and 1971. Man and Myth is a very good album, but I hope there’s still one final album to come. He has planned a new album and I am keeping my fingers crossed that he will be able to finish it soon.
