  • Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 2005!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

We have several shared selections - Stereophonics (obvs), Coldplay, Strokes and U2 all make my top 10, while I have Arctic Monkeys as a HM. Chemical Brothers are somewhat hit and miss for me but I will check out Galvanise. It must be decent for you to rate it above your other excellent choices.

Yes, The Chemical Brothers are not normally my bag but I love that song plus I think it sneaked into my #1 pick because of the memories it stirred up (songs tend to do that!)
The Arctic Monkeys, what a great song! You look at the video on CZcams and you realise how young they were back in 2005 😆 they all look about 12! Especially Alex Turner.
Beautiful weather here in Essex too 😎 funnily enough, me and the Hubby normally come down to Devon once a year, and we almost up sticks and moved down there a couple of years ago but then Covid did it’s stuff and we went off the idea. Still very tempting though 😃

The only problem with living down here is that the beaches are always packed during the school holidays. The roads have been busy since yesterday, which isn’t a surprise.
Anyway, I listened to Galvanise and recognised it. It’s not really my thing but I get why you chose it - this series isn’t about picking the ‘best’ songs, just those we like the most. There is a novelty song from 2006 that might sneak a HM for me because it was one of the first songs my daughter liked and sang along with - she’s 20 now and doesn’t like to be reminded of it! 🤣

    BILLBOARD
    1. WINNER: *Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz #14* (Exactly what one would one in terms of playful, funky hip hop.)
    2. *Mr. Brightside by The Killers #10* (Weaves their influences in a fresh modern package. Few songs from here make such an impact with the general public and deep music devotees alike like this one.)
    3. *Little Sister by Queens of the Stone Age #88* (Another solid rock track from them that managed to get some play.)
    4. *B.Y.O.B. by System of a Down #27* (Crazed, melodic metal? The pop elements are too catchy to ignore.)
    5. *Look What You've Done by Jet #37* (Yes, it sound like The Beatles. More accurately like Oasis sounding like The Beatles. That's a good thing for 00s radio.)
    WILDCARD
    1. *Lazarus by Porcupine Tree* (From an artist that had a good deal else to offer comes one of the best pop/rock singles of the period.)
    2. *The Purple Bottle by Animal Collective* (It's all in the sound they were able to tap into. The song is so scattered, but somehow the chaotic, low-fi production and sunshine pop vocals work together beautifully.)
    3. *Chicago by Sufjan Stevens* (Vibrant, jazzy platter of chamber pop.)
    4. *Hey Mama by Kanye West* (As some of these other picks may show, I tend to like when artists explore their melodic side. And so here we finds Kanye's sophomore effort at its most pleasingly sugary.)
    5. *Since K Got Over Me by The Clientele* (The indie pop dive into 80s jangle pop. Sounds good to me.)
Charts holding steady for just a little while longer. Feels very much in the spirit of the previous couple years. Less deep elsewhere for me, but the cream rises to the top.
Worst TOP 40: Wait (The Whisper Song) by Ying Yang Twins #15 (The whispering is an annoying device in its own right. Throw in some repellent subject matter on top and you get a real winner.)
    Worst Runner Up:
These Boots Are Made for Walkin' by Jessica Simpson #14

Great set of songs chosen. Covered a lot of different subgenres and subcultures and it was fun digging in. A lot to choose from in terms of favorites but here's what I came up with:
    1. The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (this song is all new to me! It's an instant indie dance classic. Love how the typically quirky lyrics are "explained" through the lens of someone from rural West Virginia moving to New York, the story develops too. Just a brilliant track)
    2. 16 Military Wives- The Decemberists (also new for me, love the melody and lyrical play with numbers)
    3. Gold Digger- Kanye West (give me more baroque rap!!)
    4. All These Things That I've Done- The Killers
    5. Did You See the Words- Animal Collective
Some HMs: Speed of Sound (Coldplay), Bat Country (Avenged Sevenfold), Girl (Beck!?), We All Lose One Another (Jason Collett), Lower Your Eyelids to Die With the Sun (M83)

2005 was a great year for Billboard hits, and will almost certainly be the last time in this series when I can find 10 singles I really like:
    Billboard Top 100:

Worst song: Axel F - Crazy Frog (#1 in UK charts)
(This was just silly rather than terrible but what I find unbelievable is just how popular it was - it topped the charts in most European countries)
Song of the Year: Arriving Somewhere But Not Here - Porcupine Tree
(Another band who were heavily influenced by Pink Floyd, although they prove here that they are just as technically accomplished as their legendary predecessors)
    HMs - Billboard:
Soul Meets Body - Death Cab For Cutie
Do You Want To - Franz Ferdinand
    Mr. Brightside - The Killers
The Hand That Feeds - Nine Inch Nails
Little Sister - Queens Of The Stone Age

My favorite was definitely Lazarus. I thought it was a really pretty song. Ain't No Easy Way and Little Sister were next in order of preference. I know I've liked some BRMC before, but I think this is the first song I've enjoyed from QOTSA.
Finally, Mighty Rearranger was a nice Robert Plant track, and I Know Why and Blue Orchid were solid efforts as well.
Glad to have heard some nice new music. Well, new to me. :) Take care, Bryan and we'll be in touch!

@@brentjackson6839 As always my friend, you are very quick to respond with your comments- thanks again for taking the time to listen and let me know what you think.
It was a really difficult choice for me with PT, which is why they are the only artist to appear twice in my list for this year. My SOTY is a typical example of their extended prog approach, whereas Lazarus shows a completely different side to the band - part of the reason I love them so much is because they are excellent at various styles. I know Bengal 🐯 is a big PT fan, so it will be interesting to see what he chooses.
I didn’t know the BRMC song before this week when I listened to their album. I was surprised that it is totally acoustic but enjoyed it very much - Ain’t No Easy Way reminds me of Led Zep in many ways. I’m not a big fan of QOTSA but like them in small doses.
Robert Plant and Sheryl Crow have both been regular picks for me. He will continue to feature in my lists until the end of this series, whereas I am not familiar with any of Sheryl’s more recent work. I know she has recorded albums with a stronger country influence, so I am looking forward to listening to them in the next few weeks.
Thanks again pal. Speak soon 😀

Actually some of my favorite songs, period.
"Black and White Town" by the Doves; featuring IMO one of the best videos ever.
"Chicago" by Sufjan Stevens; love this song.
"Dakota" by Stereophonics is a great pop song. Main drawback about that band are the usually trite lyrics.
But you guys picked so many good ones: Animal Collective, Strokes, Ryan Adams (with one of his best albums), My Morning Jacket, and the Killers.

Alot of good stuff in 2005 but it is interested to see the diversity in choice continuing to expand in the 00's. I have no song in common with any of you and only a couple of artists
My top 10 songs on 2005 are
    1. Chicago by Sufjan Stevens - such a great hook and memorably used in Little Miss Sunshine
    2. Hoppipolla by Sigur Ros - so cinematic and infectious - love the piano melody
    3. I will follow you into the dark - Death Cab for Cutie - this was the first song of theirs i heard and love the simplicity of the delivery and strength of the lyrics
    4. This Year - The Mountain Goats - great song about a violent relationship with his stepfather - got a new lease of life during lockdown with the appropriate chorus of "I'm gonna make it through this year if it kills me"
    5. I'm getting back into getting back into you - Silver Jews - Very pretty song with wonderful lyrics starting with "baby won't you take this magnet , maybe put my picture back on the fridge"
    6. If I'm a stranger - Ryan Adams - very difficult to choose a Ryan Adams song this year as he released 3 albums. Cold Roses was my favourite album and I always loved this song
    7. Freeze the Saints - Stephen Malkmus - this has everything you want from a Stephen Malkmus song - great melody, quirky lyrics
    8. Late - Ben Folds - lovely tribute to the late great Elliott Smith
    9. What is Chartaris if your not there - Half Man Half Biscuit - from my favourite HMHB album Achtung Bono. Could have picked Joy Division Oven Gloves or Sit Arm Bad Tattoo either
    10. Dilaudid -The Mountain Goats - an incredibly intense short song with a killer machine gun like strings creating such a claustrophobic atmosphere
There were a couple of choices on your list that I hadn't heard so will give them a spin

Great great year, some of my favorite songs ever were released in 05
    1. All the Wine - The National (I'm Swedish but this should be the US national anthem)
    2. Wooly Mammoth's Absence - Mount Eerie (this might be the best complete song Phil has written)
    3. Ever Rotating Sky - David Thomas Broughton (one of the most meditative songs I've heard)
    4. Banshee Beat - Animal Collective (Kramz should've gone with this, it's a perfect driving song)
    5. Mannen i den vita hatten (16 år senare) - Kent (swedish 7minute indie anthem)
I'm voting for Joe but Kram's pick was close.

Late posting which I will blame on the UK Charts website not behaving.
As I thought 2005 a fairly weak year for albums and the UK chart featured a few dire number 1s (e.g. Akon's Lonely, The Crazy Frog and You're Beautiful) I was surprised to come up with a long list of 58 songs this year. Alternative/indie rock dominates and I wouldn't disagree with anyone who claims that all of my top 10 songs fall in this category. However the likes of the Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Kelly Clarkson, Amelie, Jem, KT Tunstall and John Legend did manage to get a song each amongst my 58. Arcade Fire had 5 songs on the long list of which 2 make my top 10 whilst Elbow have 2 songs as they make my top 10 for the first time. Meanwhile, the Arctic Monkeys burst into the charts in a big way that I'm beginning to doubt we'll ever see again for a guitar-led band. Honourable mentions with more than 1 long list song but no top 10s go to Kings of Leon, Doves, (British) Sea Power, Gorillaz, Coldplay (3 songs) and The Magic Numbers.
    Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire
    Wake up. Arcade Fire
I bet you look good on the Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys
    Banquet - Bloc Party
    Forget Myself - Elbow
Leaders of the Free World. Elbow
    Hard to Beat - Hard-Fi
    Hoppipolla - Sigur Ros
    Dakota - Stereophonics
    My Doorbell - White Stripes

Wow, looking at everyone's lists I realize how this was the year I totally lost touch with newer music. Probably because that's when we had a son, but our local radio sucked too. Still like my list though.

    2) "Best of You" - Foo Fighters
    3) "Hollaback Girl" - Gwen Stephani
    4) "Boondocks" Little Big Town

I have to say, your best lists for quite a while, both on the Hot 100 lists and the Wildcards picks. I haven't heard Jason's winner so will have to check that one out before deciding on the winner, but I will say that Joe did pick an excellent song this year and while I love Animal Collective, the NIN song beats it to me.
Edit: I have now listened to the Kathleen Edwards song. It is a very good Americana song, just as Jason put it. I can't let it win against the NIN song, since I've known and loved that one for years, but Kathleen Edwards was a very positive experience so will definitely check out more by her.

HM - NIN - All the Love in the World, Sleater-Kinney - Jumpers, Franz Ferdinand - Walk Away, Rolling Stones - Oh No Not You Again, Arab Strap - No Hope For Us
    5. Architecture in Helsinki - Wishbone (Hyperactive banging and blowing on everything that makes a sound, a band best taken in very small doses - then they are a lot of fun.)
    4. Levellers - Last Man Alive (While the song sounds like everything else the band had released in the previous 15 years, it still is a very good song.)
    3. Ladytron - International Dateline (Yes, I am always a bit ahead...The great Roxy Music song they named themselves after had that haunting oboe that they emulate here. That and the drive of the old classic. Destroy Everything You Touch and High Rise on the same album are almost as brilliant.)
    2. Robert Plant - All the King's Horses (Less can sometimes be so much more.)
    1. Go-Betweens - Finding You (Perfect.)

2005 I am so unaware of most songs this year. But here I go haphazardly guessing in what I consider a bad year. The worst so far. Songs I like and knew:
    1 Girl - Beck
2 Thirteen - Elliot Smith via Alex Chilton. "Won't you tell your dad "Get off my back" / Tell him what we said 'bout 'Paint It Black / and I'll shake you ooh ooh". beautiful song.
    3. In the Morning - The Coral . James Skelly, interesting singer and the band is best when it employs psychedelia. Hypnotic keyboards. Later would record "Put the Sun back" a song that is nothing less than stunning with great vocals and guitar imo.
Most songs in my HM I sampled from TLM or TLM albums or singles. Just some that were pretty decent:
Wordless Chorus - My Morning Jacket
It Beats for You - My Morning Jacket
    Mr November - The Nationals.
    Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz
Celtic New Year - Van Morrison

Here for You or It's a Dream (from Prairie Wind) - Neil Young (I knew these two beforehand)
Speed of Sound - Coldplay (knew)
The Ocean - Richard Hawley . Ethereal
We All Lose One Another - Jason Collett
    Precious - Depeche Mode
Little Sister - Queens Of The Stone Age .
    I Summon You - Spoon
Casimir Pulaski Day Sufjan Stevens. Lead singer sounds like Paul Simon
She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5 (knew)

Nice picks. I agree with Joe about Hand that Feeds, though the album it's taken from is weak as piss. Suffer Well - another great song from a weak album, and written by Dave Gahan not Martin Gore! (RIP Andy Fletcher) M83 are one of my favourite bands but I struggle with their first album. Some Cities by the Doves is a top ten album for me and conspicuous by its absence here. But surely, overall, and as Kramzer's picks indicate, 2005 was the year of Hot Fuss. It was everywhere, and for good reason.

5)Off the Record-My Morning Jacket(this has a real insistent riff and sounds so breezy and chill with an interesting breakdown. Ultimately a song about cheating,I think)
4)Twin Cinema-New Pornographers(don't really get this, but love the call and response vocals and up beat nature of this)
3)Wrong Time Capsule-Deerhoof(this band is NOT a modern day Beefheart with Yoko singing. This is incredibly catchy with a killer riff)
2)Darlinghurst Nights-The Go Betweens(another slow burn with a catchy riff, some nice horns in the outro. )
1)Stevie Nix-Hold Steady(this is irreverent rock n roll and super funny, the run of quotable lyrics in this is endless. "and you came into the ER drinking gin from a jam jar,and the ,nurse is making jokes about the ER being like an after bar",urban legends of Rod Stewart and the stomach pump etc. Oh to be 33 forever.)
