  • Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 2002!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

    Things that Scare Me-Neko Case
    Walking With Thee-Clinic
    Top 5)
5)Slip Away-David Bowie(one of his better latter day songs,a lot like "life on mars",some have viewed this as either a John Lennon or NYC tribute)
4)Hate is the New Love-Mekons(Sally Timms sings this dirge beautifully, she reminds me of Georgia Hubley of YLT,such a comforting voice )
3)Jesus Etc.-Wilco(in my estimate the lynchpin track from the brilliant YHF,don't know what it's about, lyrics are cryptic, but it sounds great)
2)Do You Realize??-Flaming Lips(reminds me of a modern "Imagine",but definitely better. It sounds spiritual and uplifting but with some very sobering lyrics. Great Song
    1)The Rising-Bruce Springsteen(the best 9/11 related song IMHO,probably a top 10 Bruce song for me,it tops a relatively weak year)

    BILLBOARD
    1. *No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age #51* (Easily one of my favorite rock songs of the era that actually got some play. The riff and backing vocals give it such a great touch.)
    2. *Love at First Sight by Kylie Minogue #23* (She nearly appeared twice this year, but I ultimately went with this dance pop. Catchy, but there's also something strangely dark underneath.)
    3. *Lose Yourself by Eminem #1* (One of the biggest songs of the year, critically and commercially. It's pretty undeniable as far as 00s hip hop goes.)
    4. *The Zephyr Song by Red Hot Chili Peppers #49* (One of their prettier, poppier singles. I prefer that side to them.)
    5. *Hate to Say I Told You So by The Hives #86* (One of the big garage rock revival tracks. An entry two years in the making.)
    WILDCARD
    1. WINNER: *Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips* (Amazing bittersweet neo-psychedelia.)
    2. *Trains by Porcupine Tree* (Going for more of a radio-accessible alt rock sound, and works really well.)
    3. *Heartbeats by The Knife* (Cool, early electropop vibes here.)
    4. *The Scientist by Coldplay* (A signature piano ballad of theirs for good reason.)
    5. *Fight Test by The Flaming Lips* (I just love the atmosphere on this one, particularly what I guess is the chorus.)
    Top 10 Wildcard HM:
    Lost Cause by Beck
    Fist Fury by Love Fist
What a Waster by The Libertines
Feel like by this point much of the 90s remnants have flushed. Electropop feels on the rise and the post-punk/garage rock revival groups near their peak. I really like the songs I have at the top, though they just don't reach the heights of decades past for me.
Worst TOP 40: Die Another Day by Madonna #8 (She was always one to hop on certain trends early. This one feels like throwing the worst ones on the horizon against a wall. Now the distinction of being my only artist appearing on both ends.)
    Worst Runner Up:
Just a Friend by Mario #4
Down Ass Chick by Ja Rule #21

    2002
    1 Hurt - Johnny Cash
2 Lonesome Day - Bruce Springsteen last great song for me by Bruce.
3 The Golden Age - Beck
    4 Lost Cause - Beck
5 Guess I'm Doing Fine - Beck There's a blue bird at my window/ I can't hear the songs he sings.
6 Game of Love - Michele Branch and Santana. Santana was playing with so many singers at this time but this was his best collaboration.
7 Go with the Flow - Queens of the stone age - welcome back Joe.
    8. 45 - Costello
    9 Spooky Girlfriend - Costello
10 Come Around - Rhett Miller. His best song.
11 The Seed - Cody Chestnutt and The Roots. Great song. I think this record is about record companies asking Rap artists to add more rock and roll to their music. This is just not right the song tells us! However, this song adds rock to rap and it's good for that reason. It shows that record companies might be right. The song is the best counterargument against the song's own message.
12 By The Way - RHCP I'd be there waiting for Dani the girl Is singing songs to me
Beneath the marquee, overload. Anthony's lyrics are called cringeworthy but I don't usually feel that .. much. Wordplay can be our friend. Good vocals.
13 Rock Your Body- Justin Timberlake His best song to me
14 The Middle - Jimmy Eats World
14 a Summertime Thing - Chuck Prophet. very ignored dude.
    15 Differently - Neil Young
    16 I Thought - Bryon Ferry
17 We are all made of stars - Moby
18 Dreaming of You - The Coral. Maybe not near as good of their best songs but this band has made some fine songs. This serves notice that The Coral should have their day on TLM though this song would not be in my top 10 by them
19 Like a Stone - Audioslave (remember hearing a better song from them)
    Best concert this year:
2002 Love | The Forever Changes Concert before Arthur Lee died.
"Then you feel your heart beating Thrum-pum-pum-pum" Andmoreagain
'"Cause I'd go slip, slip, you'd go slip, slip away". Message to Pretty
Worst song that is often considered the best song of this year: Missy Elliott - Work It

BRILLIANT LIST (as always), Fran! I had "Favours" from The Delgados as a co-SOTY. I had "Combat Rock" by Sleater... and "I am trying to break your heart" by Wilco... But we're pretty close! Bands that I don't see there that feature prominently on my list: CLINIC (Walking With Thee is a superb album...), IMPERIAL TEEN (another pop masterpiece), GUIDED BY VOICES and IDLEWILD (incredible album from the boys from Scotland... I'd think right up your alley). There's a few you've listed that I'm not familiar with, so I've got some checking out to do!. Cheers!

Hi John! Thanks. I hadn't listened to this GBV record. Difficult to catch up with them, they're so prolific. I listened to a few songs and it sounds as good as most of the albums I know by them.
Idlewild. I knew a couple of songs by them and I remember reading good things about them but never really checked them out. Just did and this 2002 album is awesome. Great melodies. Awesome drumming. A fantastic discovery.
I don't think I had ever heard of Clinic and Imperial Team, but I liked what I just listened by them.
Loving these musical exchanges!! So great to find new music. Cheers!!

First time I've picked a SOTY that is also one of yours
Had to be "Do You Realize" by The Flaming Lips. One of my favourite all time tracks and a reminder to me of a dear friend every time I hear it.
I want to also give a shout out for any track off "The Big Come Up" debut album by The Black Keys. There are better tracks on their later albums but I just wanted to give them a shout out as they're one of my favourite bands but I don't think I've heard them mentioned at all by anyone at TLM or indeed during the Listography incarnation? Maybe we'll get to hear a little more in later years...maybe not 🤷
PS. Cannot wait for Arcade Fire week. Loving the new Album "We" and am intrigued to see where it sits with you guys. I'm already anticipating "Everything Now" being bottom of the pile.. again, we'll wait and see.

Hello my dear Babycakes & Buttercups!
2002 …. A special year requires a special list for Interpol’s Turn On The Bright Lights.
The year after 9/11 holds so many surreal memories. Paranoia, hedonism, awe, and dread filled the air around us all, and the ripple lasted for quite some time. It was an environment ready for almost anything.
I read a record review in SPIN and bought their CD on a whim. Hit me instantly and the rest is history. Felt like it was recorded just for me. Rhythmic yet moody, and oh that bass, those drums, & those twinkling guitars. Paul Banks is months away from being my age and I could relate to everything he was saying, and he said it well.
This album walked me through the agony of grief and the ecstasy of love (literally on a red Sony Discman and later on a black iPod nano) … like Lady Liberty, it has aged to a fine aquamarine patina, only made more gorgeous when tarnished by any naysayers.. and is my favorite album of all time! My words can’t do it justice. A catalyst in so many ways. Stories of wanderlust, euphoria & sorrow. Soul level resonance. Embedded in my psyche. I cannot wait to see them again In September! I think this will now be a baker’s dozen of Interpol shows.
    TOTBL Songs ranked:

Most in sync with Jason this year. Pleasantly surprised to see that "Pot Kettle Black" is someone else's favorite off of YHF because I thought I was the only one. And Last DJ had some disappointments but also some really high points and I also agree "Have Love Will Travel" is the highest point. How Kramzer just blows off TP as an old geezer but still bows on the altar of lame old man Springsteen is puzzling. But hey, it's about taste and opinion and I'm glad we have the freedom to agree to disagree on First World problems. That being said, there are some good songs here but pretty much anything from YHF and a couple of the Petty songs beat any of these top 3 nominees for me. I went with Flaming Lips given the choices.

    My Top 5 of 2002 !
    5. Minor Thing - Red Hot Chili Peppers
    4. The Big Picture And Its Details - Michael Schenker
    3. Weak Become Heroes - The Streets
    2. No One Knows - Queens of the Stone Age
    1. I Am the Highway - Audioslave
    Some thoughts:
    5. Minor Thing? Chili Peppers often make lots of official singles. How this was not one of them for "By the Way" I'll never know.
    4. The Big Picture And Its Details? The year 2002 Schenker did two acoustic albums called "Thank You 2" and "Thank You 3" albums that very few (even fans) knows exist. I think both albums are highly enjoyable. This song feels almost like soundtrack to a western movie. I love it.
    3. Weak Become Heroes? british sort of rapper with lots of electric things going on? Just something very off beat that somehow works. It has a amateurish charm to it all.
    2. No One Knows? One of the best songs ever for air-drums?
    1. Jason was sort of right. So much rock this year has a darker or more depressing feeling. I didn't mind it back then but it's nothing I am drawn to now. Audioslaves debut album is quite dark and depressing at times but I do like it. Could have been a number of songs here. "I Am the Highway" ranks up there with anything Chris Cornell ever did to me.

2002, probably my favorite year for music in the last 25 years. Really good, really diverse set of songs.
*1. Green Eyes - Coldplay -* A beautiful song, but this one is more personal this is my wife and I’s “song” (my wife’s eyes are green-ish, )
*2. Clocks - Coldplay -* I absolutely love the production on this song. Its so atmospheric. I love putting on my headphones with a big soundstage turning up the volume and just floating away with this song.
*3. The Rising - Bruce Springsteen -* I think I love this one more than I should because I think this is the best rock song of Bruce’s since like Born in the USA. Most of what I like since BITUSA are ballads.
*4. Lost Cause - Beck -* an amazing ballad, Jason pretty much nailed what makes the song great.
*5. Lose Yourself - Eminem -* “mom’s spaghetti” enough said. Though props to the opening guitar rift. I love how the raps keep getting more intense.
*6. Have Love Will Travel - Tom Petty -* I had actually forgotten about this one, thanks Jason. I usually go thought a list of a top 100 albums to make sure I didn’t forget anything. The Last DJ did no appear on that list, as I had forgotten how much people hated that album. Can’t disagree too much, but this song is awesome.
*7. Do You Realize?? - Flaming Lips -* wonderful lyrics.
*8. All The World Is Green - Tom Waits -* a beautiful unique sounding song (well unique to anybody but Tom Waits).
*9. Down - Pearl Jam-* I like “I Am Mine” but I like it’s B-Side better. Later released on Lost Dogs.
*10. Dope Nose - Weezer -* just good straight ahead rock.
    *Honorable Mentions:*
    1. The Scientist - Coldplay - probably would have made the list had I already not had two Coldplay songs.
    2. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt 1- Flaming Lips- it’s silly, but the Flaming Lips make it work.
    3. Songbird - Oasis - a good song written by Liam?
    4. Waste of Paint - Bright Eyes - my wife is a big Bright Eyes fan, particularly this record, but it was never really my thing, except this song.
    5. Don’t Know Why - Norah Jones - lovely

The wild card selections could not have been more representative of your specific tastes. The Badly Drawn Boy choice was a really big surprise. Really good album. Better film. Hour of the Bewilderbeast is a far superior album in my book. There were two songs I expected to see in the Billboard, but I guess they didn’t chart until next year.
2002 was a big year in music for me personally. The next five years as well.
    1. “Paper Tiger” by Spoon. Their masterpiece on that album.
    2. “Jesus, Etc.” By Wilco
    3. “Almost Crimes” by Broken Social Scene (come on Kram!)
    4. “First It Giveth” by Queens of the Stone Age (an incredible album Joe, but I think you meant 5 years)
    5. “Bramble Rose” by Tift Merritt (Didn’t you guys just do Don Henley week? I didn’t watch.)
HM: “Two Blue Lights” by Songs: Ohia, “Stella Was a Diver…” by Interpol, “Get By” by Talib Kweli

Hi Frodo, you have made excellent Coldplay choices, my friend. I assume you are keeping Clocks until 2003 as a Billboard selection? That’s what I have done. It’s also good to see David Gray in your list.
I know nothing about Ra, so I will check out your selections from them.

    • @frodofraggins
      @frodofraggins Před 2 lety

@@bryanbyrde8338 hmm yes. I checked and clocks is on my BB list for 2003. I also have Moses as a wildcard for 2003 as it was previously unreleased and included on their live album. I do lose touch with Coldplay in viva La Vida though, outside of a few songs.
I think White Ladder is a masterpiece but only find a few songs I like on most other David Gray albums. He's certainly not a guilty pleasure
Most people don't like Ra but they remind me of some of the melodic hard rock bands of the early 90's.

@@frodofraggins Many thanks for the reminder about Moses, although I tend to avoid all live recordings for this series. I'm surprised no one mentioned Johnny Cash and "Hurt". Do I have the right year for that one?
"Lose Yourself" by Eminem for sure. It has huge personal connection w/ me.
"House of Jealous Lovers" by the Rapture
The Streets album; "No One Knows" by QOTSA; "Yoshimi" by the Lips; "Santa Cruz" by Thrills; and "Autobahn 66" by Primal Scream; "Alice" by Tom Waits; the Interpol album; the Libertines 'Up the Bracket". And I have to say: at this point Coldplay was still pretty good. "Clocks" etc
Joe is right - a pretty good year.
Oh - "Cry me a River" by JT.
Worst song? Definitely that All-Star Sneakers girl; "Complicated", 'Sk8ter Boy"...
PS I saw Kram mentions the 'Demolition' album by Ryan Adams. if that one came out in '02, then I have to mention the last cut on that album "Jesus don't take my baby". "Nuclear". Love that weird album

having been pleasantly surprised by the number of songs that I liked on the UK Top 100 charts in 2001, I was a little disappointed and there sometimes were weeks where the charts seemed to have almost no songs I genuinely like. I did eventually manage to get 47 songs on my long list and there was a sprinkling of major pop hits that I do enjoy. Some of my album of the year contenders have a song in my top 10. Pop is represented by the Sugababes, whose mash-up of an Adina Howard song with Tubeway Army's 1979 number 1 'Are 'Friends' Electric, is, for me, much better than pretty much all the mash-ups that have followed it in the charts. My diverse list of acts with 2 songs on my long list but no top 10 appearances is made up of Pink.
