    • @Demiglitch
      @Demiglitch Před 4 měsíci +7

      I thnk it primarily comes from a musical standpoint and from overcorrection. He's a great guitar player but not the greatest of all time, so people attempt to correct the narrative by pointing out his flaws, which leads to people who don't entirely understand to simply just say "he's the worst ever and got lucky" without delving further than pentatonic scale and wah-wah pedals.
      I think at one point there was hatred towards him from Megadeth fans for the usual reasons, but even Dave Mustaine was more bitter that he'd been replaced in general and not who he was replaced with. That old feud settled down a long time ago anyway beyond interviewers prodding Mustaine to get him riled up.
      Lars tends to be the lightning rod for everything else because of And Justice for All's mixing or being the face of the anti-Napster campaign.
      Whenever I see him interviewed Kirk always seems like he's just joined the band and he's super stoked to be able to play music for a living. He brought a more artistic and melodic side to the band that James Hetfield ignored at the time. I'm sure Lars Ulrich appreciated it though since they as a duo were responsible for using Andres Serrano works on the covers of Load and Reload.
      Personally I think the greatest thing he ever did was make those green Jazz III picks. Easy to see when it's dark, feel great and I love the little cutout.

      He's such the opposite of what the stereotype of a heavy metal lead guitarist is in most people's minds. I know as a metal head that in reality most metal heads are actually big nerds who love music, horror, music gear, etc. But the regular-joe out there thinks metal heads are the exact opposite of how Kirk is. He's so soft spoken and super nice even though his guitar is belching out evil sounding noise. Lol. If you go back and watch the behind the scenes in the studio when Metallica was recording the black album you be laughing your ass off at how everyone is arguing and is jumping down each other's throats... Then Kirk says as soft as a mouse _"hey guys, can't we just get along and go back to playing our songs?"_ and everyone just ignores Kirk and continues to scream at each other and slam doors. Lmao. If you watch the footage from back then it really feels like Kirk is a child watching his parents argue.
      I can only recall ONE TIME Kirk started an argument. And he never raised his voice and in the end he was SO RIGHT. He was arguing with Lars and James about not putting guitar solos in every song. Lars and James said that guitar solos are outdated and that Metallica needs to get with the times _(this is in the late 90s/ early 2000s)_ and follow many Nu Metal bands and have little to no solos. It's true that solos wasn't popular in Nu Metal at that time, but Kirk said _"if we dont have solos like the other bands then that will date the album to this time period"_ - that was paraphrased from memory but he was so correct. James and Lars couldn't have been more wrong. Lol

      Right ?! His solos are so distinct, and have so much character. They’re never just random noise (like so many other metal leads tend to churn out). And they are all unique and immediately recognizable. Like you could hear some random new snippet for the first time and you’ll automatically know that it’s Kirk . Kirk is freaking awesome. Even though he kicked me in the head in 1985😂. Me and this dude were clawing our way onto the stage to stage dive. In the process, the clown next to me pulled kirks cord. Causing Kirks guitar to be pulled and messing him up. Also partially unplugged. Kirk looked down at both of us not knowing who was the culprit. I was the unfortunate recipient of a Chuck Taylor to the grille. 😂. I went to school the next day with a Chucky T waffle mark on my face bragging to everyone that Kirk kicked my ass . 🤣 So for everyone talking about Kirk being a gentle soul, well, he’s still metal AF. 🤘🏻. No hard feelings Kirk. I still love you almost 40 years later!

    I had the pleasure of interviewing Kirk and Cliff back in February 1985 while I was a college radio DJ. At that time underground Metal bands were trying to play as fast as possible with no regards to writing great songs, and fans were also worried about Metallica becoming "sell-outs" since they signed with a major label, Elektra. In our conversation about that I'll always remember Kirk saying that Metallica's main goal was to make "Good musical statements". I may not have liked all of their releases, but I always respected the chances they took. Their first 3 albums are on my desert island list, too.
