  • Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 2006!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

2006 is a packed year for me. Lots of great songs from lots of different artists.
(Honourable Mentions: Robbie Williams - Sin Sin Sin, Texas Lightning - No No Never, Beyonce - Irreplaceable, Rihanna - Unfaithful, Take That - Patience, Snow Patrol - Shut Your Eyes, Reamonn - Tonight)
    Charting Songs:
    5. Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks (UK #13, Germany #31)
    4. Lily Allen - Smile (UK #1, US #49, Germany #67)
    3. Nelly Furtado - All Good Things (Come to an End) (Germany #1, UK #4, US #86)
    2. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Snow (Hey Oh) (Germany #5, UK #16, US #22)
    1. Muse - Starlight (UK #13, Germany #70)
    Wildcards:
    5. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
    4. Electric Six - I Buy the Drugs [So catchy. So. Catchy. Fun fact: There was a time where you could send a letter to the PO Box he is singing about in the bridge to get autographs from the band in return. Cool stuff.]
    3. Muse - Exo-Politics
    2. Susanne Sundfør - Walls [Her first single, it went to #3 on the Norwegian charts in 2006. And so started the career of my favourite artist of the 21st century and favourite singer of all time. Great songwriting on this one and her incredible voice make this easily one of the best songs of 2006.]
SONG OF THE YEAR 2006: The Divine Comedy - A Lady of A Certain Age [Very beautiful and sad Baroque Pop Ballad about a life an elderly lady once had. Excellent composition by Mr. Neil Hannon. Top 50 song of all time for me.]

No No Never was a Eurovision entry and I'm not saying this just because of that because I love quite a few Eurovision entries including the winner that year but I've never liked that song. If you like that song then I'd recommend Calm After the Storm by the Common Linnets and Slow Down by Douwe Bob and Outlaw in 'Em by Waylon.

I think that I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass is easily Yo La Tengo’s strongest album of the 2000s. It has way more hooks/muscle than the two previous albums (both of which Kramzer seems to love). I haven’t really cared for any YLT album after this one (well, Fade was okay).

    BILLBOARD
    1. *When You Were Young by The Killers #14* (Another slick 80s-inspired single. They really sound like The Cure to me here.)
    2. *Dare by Gorillaz #87* (Going more of a dancy/electropop route here quite successfully.)
    3. *How to Save a Life by The Fray #3* (Possibly a controversial pick, and I don't tend to like the subgenre of smash hit rock ballads from this period, but it goes down well. Maybe Scrubs helps.)
    4. *Steady As She Goes by The Raconteurs #54* (Jack White continuing where he left off with the White Stripes, even if it is a shameless Joe Jackson rip.)
    5. *Crazy by Gnarls Barkley #2* (A team-up that worked well in a brief moment. A neo-soul track that was everywhere for a while.)
    WILDCARD
    1. WINNER: *Roscoe by Midlake* (Where indie rock meets Fleetwood Mac. Sign me up.)
    2. *Intervention by Arcade Fire* (Great song off of Neon Bible released at the tail end of the previous year. Adore the church organ.)
    3. *Boy from School by Hot Chip* (Top class indietronica.)
    4. *Lazy Eye by Silversun Pickups* (Those guitar tones and vocals are quite sweet indeed.)
    5. *On a Neck, On a Spit by Grizzly Bear* (Indie folk that really builds together nicely. Strong early track from them.)
    Top 10 Wildcard HM:
Bridge to Nowhere by Sam Roberts
Catch Yer Own Train by The Silver Seas
    Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys
    In This Camp by Midlake
Billboard has remnants of the previous years, but I found it notably weaker overall at the top. Not sure I'm fond of what that trajectory is likely to bring. On the other hand, the indie scene brings a lot of fun stuff to the table elsewhere.
Worst TOP 40: I Wanna Love You by Akon featuring Snoop Dogg #1 (Snoop Dogg is okay, but elsewhere this song embodies the direction of pop I despise that is still going on today. Hideous vocals, uninspired production, bland songwriting. The nadir of music.)
    Worst Runner Up:
I Know You See It by Yung Joc #17
Ms. New Booty by Bubba Sparxxx #7

@@echosmyron1278 I Do Perceive was the go to for a while. Definitely a better record than most that came afterwards. There is very little representation of the more indie stuff from this time on youtube. You kinda had to exist in the right scenes to understand how truly great some of those bands were. I've always dug real hard for good music whereas a lot of people wait for it to come to them.

Knights of Cydonia has such a wonderful energy. Is it dramatic? Is it melodramatic? Who cares, it sounds amazing and carries me along in its fantasy.

Not sure what my top 10 of 2006 would be, but the following two songs would definitely be in it: 'Bird of Cuzco' by Nina Nastasia, a beautiful song and I think a tribute to influential British DJ John Peel who always championed her, but who died in Cuzco (off Nina's gorgeous album 'On Leaving'), and Nellie Furtado's 'Afraid', starts off brooding and dark sounding with a sort of sinister guitar riff, but ends up with a joyful chorus of what sounds like school girls, who break into laughter at the end...(opener on her album 'Loose')

Rock music was still alive in 2006, although it was a rare presence in the Billboard chart:

Dani California - Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Is It Any Wonder? - Keane

    Shoot The Runner - Kasabian
    Country Girl - Primal Scream
Worst song: You’re Beautiful - James Blunt
(This would actually be quite a good song if Blunt was a reasonable singer. Sadly, he possesses one of the most irritating voices ever - worse than fingernails scratching a chalkboard!)
Song of the Year: Supermassive Black Hole - Muse
(I wasn’t previously a fan of Muse but this song helped to win me over to their unique and ‘other worldly’ sound)
    HMs:
When The Sun Goes Down - Arctic Monkeys
Break The Night With Colour - Richard Ashcroft
    Empire - Kasabian
Nothing In My Way - Keane
    Bones - The Killers
    Starlight - Muse

@@brentjackson6839 thanks Brent. I could have easily included Nothing In My Way as one of my top 5 wildcards, except that I limit myself to one song per artist in my top 10. This means it can only be a HM if they are already one of my Billboard picks. It’s partly for this reason that I hold back certain songs if they made the Billboard chart in the following year - that will happen with The Killers in 2007.

This is the year Flaming Lips released "The W.A.N.D" and I thought this song will be inescapable on pop radio it's so catchy. Nobody cared. They played the song in commercials. Probably the closest to a "Smells Like Teen Spirit" like experience I've ever had with a song. 🤷‍♂️

1 The Town - Los Lobos A stark evocative song that is better than any other song by the critics' darlings.

18 Boxing About - Robert Pollard
19 Right In Two - Tool
    20 Roscoe - Midlake
    Criminal in a studio:
    Save Room - John Legend
I like the song but John steals a great melody but has trouble with lyrics. "Save Room" is an undercover cover of the Classic IV's "Stormy" melody. Here's a sample:
" If you stay won't you stay? Stay. Save room for my love . Save room for a moment to be with me Save room for my love save a little Save a little for me
Won't you save a little (I think we're pickin' up on John's vibe)
Save a little for me This just might hurt a little (right big John)
Love hurts sometimes, when you do it right (right trite John)"

    The Island-The Decemberists
The Race is on Again-Yo La Tengo
    Underground Sun-Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3
    Van Occupanther-Midlake
    Top 5)
5)2wice-Mission of Burma(the drum intro is killer and the track is relentless, tremendous chorus as well.)
    4)Yankee Bayonet-The Decemberists(This album sounds like a 21st century Thick as a Brick,but this track has more of a Richard & Linda Thompson vibe,which is awesome. )
3)Wolf Like Me-TV on the Radio(not much to say about this except its one of the best rockers of this millenium)
2)Point and Shoot-Yo La Tengo(The upbeat vocals and melody completely counter the dark nature of the lyrics, this is one of YLTs gems,a beautiful song)
1)Donna Sumeria-Mission of Burma(A Donna Summer tribute,or joke,by a band like MOB is just genius. No idea what it's about, but the "I feel love" interlude had me rocking and cracking up at the same time. This track slays)

Brilliant news that you got to see Muse at Wembley. It sounds like that was an amazing show. Sadly I haven’t been to as many gigs since 2000 - that’s mainly due to kids and family life getting in the way, and also partly a result of moving away from the London area. For me, this was the strongest year so far in the 2000s in terms of songs from the UK chart. Well, perhaps not for depth, with a bit too much 'landfill' indie for me and a middling total of 53 songs on my long list. However, there was a real battle to make my top 10 with some songs missing out that I think may have made lists in some of the previous few years. I really like quite a few albums from this year and some of them are represented in the list of acts with more than 1 long list entry and no top 10 representation, these are Hard-Fi, Arctic Monkeys, Keane (3 songs), The Fratellis (3 songs), The Scissor Sisters and The Killers. Some rather quirky songs make my top 10 with 2 from The Flaming Lips plus one called 'Trains to Brazil' which mentions neither trains nor Brazil in the lyrics. My truly wildcard choice comes from Sweden's Peter, Bjorn and John and, for me at least, it just lands on the endearing rather than the nauseating side of twee. Also on the list is the lead single from my album of the year from the late Amy Winehouse but it is the Raconteurs that probably have my number one song:
    Sewn - The Feeling
The Wand - The Flaming Lips
The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song - The Flaming Lips
    Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Trains to Brazil - The Guillemots
    Starlight - Muse

Hey NVG. Very nice list 🙂 Though not necessarily in the same year, we both have Starlight, Read My Mind, Welcome To The Black Parade and Steady, As She Goes.
Of the other tracks I know, I am a fan of When You Were Young, Knights of Cydonia, Map of the Problematique and each of your Amy Winehouse picks.
A goodly number of songs are brand new to me, which I will check out. Hope to be able to get that done today. Til next time, my friend. 😊

I won’t get back to you as quickly as Brent does but I will try to give you some feedback before Friday if possible. Next week will be really crammed with Porcupine Tree, so I also hope to make a start on my 2009 list before this weekend. It’s going to be a hectic few weeks. 😆

Greetings! Hoped to have this ready for you earlier than this. Sorry about that.
I had a relatively clear favorite this week, in the form of Kasabian's Sun Rise Light Flies. Very sonically appealing. A 9.3 for me.
I don't recall if Veruca Salt has had a song I liked more than The Sun. For some reason, I expected the song to take a turn I wouldn't care for. Never happened 🙂. 9.0 rating.
Several more tunes I enjoyed, in order of preference: Flathead, Last Trip (In Flight), Margaret vs. Pauline, The Light Ride, Take What You Take, Melatonin and Turn Into.
Glad I got to hear some good "new" songs! Have a great week, buddy. 😊

@@bryanbyrde8338 Hello Bryan - Hope all is well. The Dolly Rocker Movement album I recommended was the final one - Our Days Mind the Tyme (2009) - which is a neo-psychedelic masterpiece. Glad you enjoyed it. 😎 The selections above are from their earlier albums (both released in 06) - they only had three total. These earlier ones are very good but not quite up to the classic status as the final one.
No pressure, btw. Get back to me on the unfamiliar ones whenever you have the time. I appreciate ANY time you can give. You, Brent and and a few others (Lou!) are friends of mine and an important part of the TLM community. I thought I saw in another post that you were proposing to just take a look at the top 10 and then save the HMs for later. (Did I get that right?) I think that's an excellent suggestion. I tend to stack up the HMs, particularly from artists that I really like. On the other hand, I am very selective about my top 10 list. So if you are limted to that for now then that's totally ok. Like I said, whatever time you can give is greatly appreciated. Of course it should always be something you enjoy. 😀
Just to be clear: I think all HMs are excelelnt songs. (4.5 outa 5 minimal). It's just that I tend to indulge myself with artists I like and if a song hits the right genre chord for me. Sometimes it is an extremely close call as to what makes the the top 10 as opposed to the HM list. (I do not apply the "one song per artist" rule.)
BTW, I still owe you for 06 & 07 - Many "sames" so we aren't talking about too many songs here which are unfamiliar to me.
I am glad you are doing the Porcupine Tree discography. I will sit back and enjoy the show. I will certainly check out your top album/song recommendations. They are a band I am unfamiliar with except for one or two song recommendations from you. They may be a bit outside my wheelhouse but I cerainly liked what I heard.
As I think I mentioned, I am planning to do the Siouxsie and the Banshees discography next week. lots of listening there.
Didn't plan to go on and on. Just wanted to make sure you didn't feel any pressure about reporting back within any set timeframe.
Okay, Bryan. Thx again and I will talk to you soon, my friend. 🙂

HM - Tool - Vicarious, Charlatans - Blackened Blue Eyes, Morrissey - You Have Killed Me, Built to Spill - Goin' Against Your Mind, Juicy Lucy - Silver Bird
    5. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - You Won't Let Me Down Again (Actually the best song on their third collaboration were Townes Van Zandt covers, but this is the best original, partly thanks to James Iha on guitar.)
    4. Killing Joke - Invocation (Kashmir reborn, even if Jaz Coleman will never be Robert Plant.)
    3. Iron Maiden - Out of the Shadows (In the new millennium the band returned with a powerful and unmistakable sound. While their albums suffered slightly from endless runtime and over-long tunes, it does not mean that individual tracks could not be very good. The live in the studio atmosphere here helps a lot.)
    2. Leslie West - One Thing On My Mind (West + Aynsley Dunbar, nobody will miss the Black Keys after listening to this. Then check the album opener Blues Before Sunrise. Then check the album Blue Me.)
    1. Motorhead - God Was Never on Your Side (Power ballads appear randomly on their later day albums - this one works because the emphasis is on power rather than on ballad.)

SOTY probably 'Valerie' by the Zutons.
And speaking of 'Valerie' I could pick the whole Amy Winehouse album. "Rehab' was a stellar track; she had great sense of humor. "Love is a losing game' probably my fave track.
'Sheena is a parasite' by the Horrors.
'Incinerate' by SY. And "Country Girl' by Primal Scream
I forgot the TV on the Radio album, "Wolf like me" will be a pick.
There are a lot of tracks I like a lot from that year: Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Rapture, Scissor Sisters, The Knife - but not really SOTY's.
Love the Secret Machine album. I was totally digging that first cut, and sent my friend just "Alone Jealous & Stoned" in a text. And he got all worried, because I had just quit using drugs and alcohol, and he thought I'd fallen off the wagon.

Really struggling now. Had to dig so deep, again, and all I got is "Bunsen Burner" by "Rock n Rolls Greatest failure" John Otway.
He had one hit back in 1977 and spent the next 30 years chasing another. This was it. After a campaign that involved a gig where fans got to choose his next release (yes, I was there but I voted for something else) he managed, with the help of said fans, to chart at number 9 here in the U.K. A reflection you'd have to say on the loyalty and commitment of his followers rather than the quality of the song. But hey, it's all I got.
It's been a long couple of days and Jubilee fatigue is setting in. God Save The Queen. 🇬🇧👑🎈

Well done Kramza for picking Samson by Regina Spektor, you could have picked any song from Begin to Hope, what a brilliant album, great song writing, vocals and Regina's piano work is off the scale so Kramza gets the smiley face🙂. Unfortunately, Jason & Joe get the grumpy face ☹️ for a really insipid selection. I do however, have another option for 2006 and that is Thea Gilmore's album Harpo's Ghost, you could pick any song from that but Samson is fine with me. Worst song , I'll pass on that and take your word for it with your selections!☹️

I was thinking about 2006 the other day when the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs came out with their new song...which is not bad, by the way....

Los Lobos: "The Road To Gila Bend", from The Town And The City
Devotchka: "Til the End of Time", from Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack
Scott Mathew: "Upside Down", from the Shortbus soundtrack
T-Bone Burnett: "Every Time I Fell the Shift", from The True False Identity
Bob Dylan: "Someday Baby", from Modern Times. (A blatant rip-off of Muddy Water's "Trouble No More", but still great)

Ah, a few I missed and a few of the same artists, but different songs. Thumbs up for Getatchew Mekuria and The Ex; I saw them in 2008 and it might be the best concert I ever saw.

@@johnwilliams4658 There were other Ethiopian artists on the bill, too. The crowd was as amazing as the musicians. Security had a hard time keeping people from dancing in the aisles. It was quite the party.

@@johnlefsky8731 sounds great. Mekuria's tone reminds me a lot of Ayler in his more melodic moments. Such a great sound.
