  • Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 2001!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

    1) Fell in Love with a Girl - The White Stripes. The finest slice of rock 'n' roll to come out of Detroit since the Stooges' "Search and Destroy".
    2) The Ballad of Carol Lynn - Whiskeytown. I love the French Horn on this. It just adds a wonderfully sad texture to a great country ballad.
    3) Anything You Want - Spoon. The keyboard stabs are super cool. I guess this is about Britt Daniel's relationship with the Fiery Furnaces' Eleanor Friedberger.
    4) Phone Went West - My Morning Jacket. The end of this song is just chill-inducing with Jim James singing "There'll be a knock on your back door" and phaser guitar lines just swirling around.
    5) The Swimmer - Frank Black and the Catholics. Great electric piano on this.
    6) Hash Pipe - Weezer. Sure, I've heard this too many times, but it's a great riff and a rockin' tune.
    7) Glad Girls - Guided By Voices. GBV and their most polished with a perfect power pop song.
    8) Barely Legal - The Strokes. My favorite song off the Strokes' classic Is this It.
    9) Imitation of Life - R.E.M. Probably the last great R.E.M. single. This one actually charted on the Hot 100.
    10) Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz. Damon Albarn and Del the Funky Homosapien hook up for this cool tune that also charted on the Hot 100.

Hi Frodo, we don’t have many similar choices this week but I still like most of the bands you have chosen. I’m not a Radiohead fan but Knives Out would definitely be my choice from Amnesiac.

My Top 13 (ignores Hot 100):
SOTY - Hella Good - No Doubt (maybe it’s my love of jet skis but this song still gets my blood flowing big time..also the second best video after Tonight, Tonight..I’m back in 2001 watching VH1s Top 20 Video show on Saturday morning..still cool to this day..No Doubt at their baddest)
Shoot Doris Day - Super Furry Animals (strangest song title and ironically it was her son, Terry Melcher, who Charles Manson was trying to have killed when he sent his people to Terry’s old house and they mistakenly killed the wrong people..no I don’t have an obsession with Charles Manson…just a weird coincidence!)
Mink Car - They Might Be Giants (but they weren’t)
    Sing - Travis
    Imitation of Life - R.E.M.
The Space Between - Dave Matthews Band
Have a Nice Day - Stereophonics (I guess you can say I got hooked on it…you gotta see the Brian Regan routine on hooked on phonics - funniest stand up comedian of all time)
    Jaded - Aerosmith
Whenever, Wherever - Shakira (“MY girl” (Joe))
Everywhere - Michelle Branch (it was, but it makes my list anyway)
Still Fighting It - Ben Folds
Powder Blue - Elbow (I like them but still don’t get the comparison to Genesis that I’ve read in more than one place)
This is Love - PJ Harvey (thank you TLM, for the introduction)
Poor Misguided Fool - Starsailor (the worst of the PBP movement, but that’s still better than most new acts in the 2000s).

When I started to care about popular music as a little kid in the mid 60s, I had no idea how much it would change over the years. Guess I didn't realize I would change as well! But, my tastes are willing to evolve only so much. That said, I like a lot of musical styles. But there are plenty I'll never understand. 😊

@@NaughtyVampireGod Some things to know about Guided By Voices:
      1) they do NOT have any perfect albums.
      2) I am not familiar with their post-2012 "renaissance," where they got back together after 8 years, so I can't you help you with much of that material.
      3) part of the fun is wading thru their music to see which songs hit you. It won't be all of them, most likely.
      4) while everyone lauds the "golden era" of GBV from 1994-1996 - Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes and Under The Bushes, Under The Stars (the golden era may also include Propeller from 1992, though it's difficult to believe it also includes Vampire On Titus from 1993, as that's one of my least favorites) - don't let anyone tell you that their releases from 1997-2004 are "less than."
      5) if you're going to listen to Guided By Voices, you might as well listen to Robert Pollard's solo projects - there's not much difference.
      6) my favorite pre-"golden era" GBV album is Self Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia
      7) my favorite album of theirs is Universal Truths And Cycles - the run of songs from "Christian Animation Torch Carriers" thru "Car Language" (tracks 4 thru 15) is about as good as Guided By Voices ever got.
      8) "Golden Era" songs to start off with: 1) Hardcore UFO's; 2) "Buzzards And Dreadful Crows; 3) Tractor Rape Chain; 4) Echos Myron; 5) I Am A Scientist; 6) A Salty Salute; 7) Watch Me Jumpstart; 8) As We Go Up We Go Down; 9) Game of Pricks; 10) Closer You Are; 11) Motor Away; 12) Cut Out Witch; 13) The Official Ironmen Rally Song; 14) Your Name Is Wild; 15) Lord of Overstock; 16) Don't Stop Now

Once again, it's one of those years where it wasn't easy to find ten songs (by different artists, because I still think it's funnier than picking multiple songs from the same album/artist). These are my top ten songs of 2001 though:

    BILLBOARD
    1. *Thank You by Dido #3* (A charting entry three years in the making. It was pretty as a sample in Stan, and even better in the full form here.)
    2. *Yellow by Coldplay #48* (Doing their brand of vulnerable, anthemic-like ballad quite well.)
    3. *Imitation of Life by R.E.M. #83* (Another one of their cuts I wouldn't consider up with my favorites, but still more than good enough to slide in here.)
    4. *Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz #57* (Chill dub foundation and playful rapping set the stage for the fusion we've come to expect in this now long-running Albarn project.)
    5. *Only Time by Enya #10* (Huge new age song with production elements that harken back to the dreaminess of, say, I'm Not in Love.)
    WILDCARD
    1. WINNER: *New Slang by The Shins* (Immaculate indie folk pop. Still holds up wonderfully.)
    2. *Heavy Metal Drummer by Wilco* (Fun, catchy pop/rock for the indie age.)
    3. *Jesus Etc. by Wilco* (More alt-country on this one with an exemplary use of strings.)
    4. *Last Nite by The Strokes* (Tight, punchy garage rock revival.)
    5. *Pyramid Song by Radiohead* (Keeping the experimentation going with the one of the wilder 4/4 time signatures you'll hear.)
    Top 10 Wildcard HM:
    Swimming Pool by Camera Obscura
I'm the Man Who Loves You by Wilco
    Aerodynamic by Daft Punk
    Pot Kettle Black by Wilco
Charts pool was arguably even shallower this year, though I'm cool with the five that made the cut. Elsewhere, indie rock continues to make a push and offers a lot of the biggest standouts.
Worst TOP 40: Follow Me by Uncle Kracker #5 (This one was actually worse than I remembered. The basic melody is whatever, but the performance seems so uninspired and it's an early example of using vocal processing to take out all personality.)
    Worst Runner Up:
I Wanna Be Bad by Willa Ford #22

I got on this thread way too late. Got to say I love this channel. It has attracted great followers. (E.g Roxanne Walsh, Rich Latta, Fran Garcia, and I know I am forgetting many names) I have gotten so many inspirations, or reminders of what to check out.
2001 - I have to give it to the Strokes. Bringing back guitar driven, hook filled Rock out of NYC.
I love the 'Essence' album by Lucinda Williams. It is my favorite of hers. Charlie Sexton's production is astounding. The rockers come later in sequencing, but those first 4 cuts are mesmerizing in their stillness, and beauty.
    NERD was great.
Album "Let it Come Down" by Spiritualized. I could list every track 'Stop your cryin', 'Anything More', Do it all over again'.
I'll say 'Some Day" by Strokes.
    "Souljacker' Eels
    'New York' by Ryan Adams.
    'Bang' by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
'Whatever happened to my RnR" by BRMC
'Love Letter' by Nick Cave, gorgeous song.
'Remember Me' by British Sea Power
    'Nite and Fog' Mercury Rev.
I notice that this year, all my favorite songs are melancholic.

Hello Mark: Interesting comment re: female artists. For whatever reason this was an relatively low year for me for female artists: only 2 of my top 10. By comparrison, 1998 was 5/10, 1997 was 5/10, 1996 was 6/10. (Definitions: if a band has a female frontwoman that counts as a female artist; if a band is at least 50% female, it is a female artist. Example: Imperial Teen). 1999 was a bit low at 3/10, but top 2 were females (Eurythmics; Tori Amos). When I finally post my 2000 list it will be either 4 or 5 female.

As I started compiling my long list of contenders for my top 10 from the UK charts of 2001, something occurred that I don't think has happened before and I doubt will happen again. 3 of the first 5 songs could actually be considered hip-hop. Well they at least feature plenty of rapping. In fact, 2 of those 3 have made it to my top 10, despite my long list eventually featuring a surprisingly healthy 73 songs. Amongst these were quite a sprinkling of hip-hop and some diverse dance tracks. Saying that, there was still a decent amount of indie-type acts on the long list. The acts with more than 1 song on my long list with no top 10 representation were Ash (3 songs), Starsailor (3 songs), PJ Harvey, David Gray, The Avalanches, Destiny's Child, Elbow, REM, Basement Jaxx and Sophie Ellis- Bextor. Muse managed to get 5 songs on my long list of which 2 make my top 10. They are probably contenders for getting the most top 10 entries this decade but maybe old faves the Manic Street Preachers could be in there as well as they make my list with something of a Beach Boys pastiche. Also a big year for The Strokes with 4 long list entries:
The Next Episode - Dr. Dre feat Snoop Dogg
Daydream in Blue - I Monster
    Fallin' - Alicia Keys
So Why So Sad - Manic Street Preachers
    Feeling Good - Muse

Just for what it's worth, I find Kram the most unpredictable with his picks. Jason tends to favor a certain type of music but can also be somewhat unpredictable and I'm starting to figure Joe out so I'd say he's the most predictable (but has the widest range, if that makes any sense...I can predict him on both ends of the spectrum if you will). Nothing there was meant to be a dig. I love aspects of each of their "types" of music (to the extent they even have a type...I don't like classifying music but it's a necessary evil I suppose everyone does it...I KNOW, Kram, I hate those people (like me) who say they like ALL kinds of music ;)). Take that with a grain of salt and maybe just to start a conversation..it's Friday and I'm closing up shop for the week.

Ladies and gentlemen, top 5 of 2001 !
    5. Out of the Darkness - Blue Öyster Cult
    4. Speechless - Michael Jackson
    3. Jaded - Aerosmith
    2. Aerodynamic - Daft Punk
    1. Nadia - Jeff Beck
    5. Blue Öyster Cults last record in decades before The Symbol Remains. An album that many older fans don't appreciate. I don't understand why. Except for a few silly lyrics I think the album is very solid. Could have chosen a few other tracks. Out of the Darkness could easily fit on a classic records of theirs. In my mind.
    4. Being about 16 years when Michael Jackson "Invincible" came out it felt like it was forever since he had been active. But it really wasn't. The pressure was on and even if I think the album did sell quite well the album never really got in to the culture like most his albums. I mean.. How many songs can you mention on the top of your head? I think most people would answer none or perhaps "You Rock My World". Many seem to dismiss it. I like most of it. It's not a grand mindblowing return but if you like his music.. There are plenty good tunes here. Speechless is never mentioned at all. I like it.
    3. Jason is pretty much on point. "Just Push Play" was a very strange album that tried to keep the band relevant when just pushing all older audience away while gaining no new audience. I never heard of any anyway! I still like the typical Aerosmith songs though. Fly Away From Here, Sunshine and Avant Garden. The rest if very mediocre. Jaded could been just another Aerosmith track in line but I think it has some unique qualities.
    2. Many other songs I could have chosen would been nostalgia only. Like Joe. Daft Punks record has aged well and several songs could been on this list. I wasn't to keen on this song back in the day but might be my favorite now.
    1. Like Aerosmith Jeff Beck was onboard creating something very far from your regular rock/guitar-album. I can imagine people listening to this and think "Is this one of the most respected guitarists of all time? Is it a joke?". It sounds like noise. Bascially. Most of the record is an acquired taste for sure. Nadia is the biggest contrast. Just a very unique and beautiful remake. Remake? You bet and sounds amazing.

I think it’s very interesting how you guys hate bands like Train and Five for Fighting which were so obviously influenced by Counting Crows. I love Broken Social Scene, but there’s no way I choose a song off that album as my favorite. Feel Good Lost is a solid post-rock album. I’d have to vote for “New Slang” even though I’m so sick of that song. How old were you, Jason, when M. Ward was your “own little secret?”
    My Top 5 songs:
“Like a Forest” - Low (only because David went with “July”)

Ok, I'm back. This was a great video. 2
001 such a horrible year for having too many "rock" bands that tried to sound the same. It definitely wasn't good. I was surprised at how big hop=-hop seemed rule or this year. I remember that I hated Glitter (train wreck!). Loved and bought Sugar Ray and Janet's pop cds during this time. Felt like Pink-took the cheesy route by copying Avril. And Usher's 12393928 (cd)….was way too overplayed.
I Liked: Britney's hiphop song w/ snoop, Missy Elliot's big comeback, Eminem, Nelly , Nelly Furtado and Jlo.
Years later: I feel in love with The Strokes album, Eve 6, and Tim McGraw and Faith's Hill's stuff @ this time.
I agree with Dave Matthews Band- I remember being obsessed with one of their videos, this was fun.

2001 was certainly better than the previous year, although the challenge of finding 5 Billboard picks is getting tougher all the time:
    Billboard Top 100:
    Yellow - Coldplay
    It’s Been Awhile - Staind
    Dig In - Lenny Kravitz
    Jaded - Aerosmith
    Drive - Incubus
    Wildcards:
    Poor Misguided Fool - Starsailor
    Sing - Travis
    Someday - The Strokes
    Mr. Writer - Stereophonics
Worst song: Somewhere Over The Rainbow / What A Wonderful World - Cliff Richard
(A new millennium and still he refuses to go away! These were 2 of the greatest songs of the last century - when performed with total conviction by Judy Garland and Louis Armstrong. Unfortunately, this fraud sounds as genuine as a dodgy used car salesman)
Song of the Year: Destiny - Zero 7
(For me, these guys were masters of the ‘chill-out’ genre and released some of the greatest downtempo music of their era, including this blissful classic)
    HMs:
The Rescue Blues - Ryan Adams
    Shining Light - Ash
Spread Your Love - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Wish You Were Here - Incubus
Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) - James
Stillness Of Heart - Lenny Kravitz
    Fever - Starsailor
Lying In The Sun - Stereophonics
    Last Nite - The Strokes
Fell In Love With A Girl - White Stripes
