  • Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 2014!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

2014 was a great year for music! While I like "Red Eyes," my SOTY has to go to that album's closer - "In Reverse." It's a masterclass in atmosphere, particularly in its opening minutes. Some of my other favorites are:
-"Devil" by Horse Thief (a criminally overlooked album)
    -"The Golden Throne" by Temples
    -"Inside Out" by Spoon
    -"Drive" by Wild Cub
-"Night at Lake Unknown" by Conor Oberst
-'Divisionary (Do the Right Thing)" by Ages and Ages
-"Seasons (Waiting on You)" by Future Islands
    -"Plymouth" by Stands of Oaks
-"Champions of Red Wine" by New Pornographers
    -"Doses and Mimosas" by Cherub
    -"Valhallas" by The Barr Brothers

Hot 100 is a distant memory. Three albums dominated my top 10, and a fourth filled out much of my extended playlist top 30.
    2014 Top 10 Songs
    1. Outlier - Spoon
    2. Under the Pressure - The War On Drugs
    3. Inside Out - Spoon
    4. An Ocean In Between The Waves - The War on Drugs
    5. Weight of Love - Black Keys
    6. All the Rage Back Home - Interpol
    7. Seasons (Waiting on You) - Future Islands
    8. Digital Witness - St. Vincent
    9. All This Could Be Yours - Cold War Kids
    10. Fever - Black Keys
Song of the Year - Outlier - Top five songs are separated by decimal points. In the end, Outlier wins because it is so unique in the Spoon discography.

HM - Jeremy Spencer - Durango, Thurston Moore - Speak to the Wild, Mark Lanegan - Harvest Home, James Williamson & Carolyn Wonderland - Open Up and Bleed, Camper Van Beethoven - Camp Pendleton
    5. Black Keys - Weight of Love (One of their most accomplished songs - they were always good for one or the other highlight on albums that otherwise just dragged on.)
    4. Ryan Adams - Stay With Me (In 2014 Adams' self titled album delivered what Petty, U2 and Springsteen failed to do with their releases in that year. I could have picked multiple songs from it.)
    3. Jack Bruce - Fields of Forever (Once again he was united with Pete Brown for a classic rock song with a remarkable horn section to fire it up. The song and the album Silver Rails felt like a comeback but only months after the release we found that it was an unexpected goodbye.)
    2. Ted Nugent - Never Stop Believing (At this point I take his records as instrumental albums with the vocals as sound effects of no specific meaning. One of the few remaining real rockers and guitar slingers - and most of them always were assh...wankers.)
    1. Robert Cray - You Move Me (He still released good blues albums after all these years even if the spark had turned to business-as-usual at times. A new band and producer Steve Jordan gave the extra kick for this one.)

    BILLBOARD
    1. *i by Kendrick Lamar #39* (Expert use of a re-recorded sample in an exciting, adventurous hip hop package.)
    2. *Chandelier by Sia #8* (All about that fierce chorus that could grab anyone's attention.)
    3. *West Coast by Lana Del Rey #17* (Slows things down even further into a dark, dreamy piece.)
    4. *Ain't It Fun by Paramore #10* (Lots of energy here, and sounding as good as they ever did in that modern pop punk/power pop style.)
    5. *Style by Taylor Swift #6* (Pleasant conventional pop with a nice touch of 80s synthpop.)

    1. WINNER: *Fade Away by Susanne Sundfør* (As melodic and pretty as electropop gets. An invigorating recording with her great voice and the driving synth beat.)
    2. *Passing Out Pieces by Mac DeMarco* (Feel like this quirky bedroom pop works at its absolute best here thanks to that meaty synth.)
    3. *Continental Shelf by Preoccupations [as Viet Cong]* (Sounds almost like it could be pulled straight out of the early 80s post-punk scene, and a great one too.)
    4. *After Dark by Mr. Kitty* (An off-the-board pick, but can't deny as an alluring slab of modern synth.)
    5. *Party Police by Alvvays* (Something about the way the guitar feels low-fi but mixed with jangle sensibilities really hits on this one.)

I think the production on that 2014 Against Me! album is somewhat iffy (strange that their albums from the early 2000s sound so much better), but “Paralytic States” is a fantastic track. I forgot to put it on my list because I lost interest in the band’s output after they signed to a major label in 2006, and thus forgot that track even existed until now.
Reinventing Axl Rose and Eternal Cowboy remain two of the best folk-punk albums of the 2000s (not that it’s a crowded contest within that sub-genre).

Very slowly catching up with the schedule. My long list of UK chart songs this year has dropped to 26. While this is not a good sign, there were quite a lot of big hits that I nearly put on it. However, for the first time in decades I had no acts with more than 1 song on my long list without making the top 10. This year's leading act are Royal Blood whose debut album gets 3 songs on my top 10, with another on the long list. The Arctic Monkeys continue their bid to get the most post-millennium entries on my top 10s with 2 entries together with Taylor Swift who provides 2 of the finest pop songs of recent years. Talking of great pop songs by female vocalists, Sia also makes the top 10 which is completed by the great slow-burner from Hozier and an early slice of Jungle's slightly alternative joyous dance-pop.

I love how Joe is like “worst year ever” for the last 10 years and then busts out the most indie-centric list of songs. Hilarious. Heigh Ho definitely in my Top 10 albums of the year, but difficult to single out a song for my Top 10. Jason gets my vote with a brilliant synth-pop song. So, kudos again to you for that. Evidently I have opinions and a bit of experience in the music industry to inform that, and I know engagement is good for the optics and algorithm. My fave artists are, of course, Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, and, as you know, Husker Du. Although, if I were a millionaire I'd pay you a lot to do Billie Holiday's discography, which never mind that not happening, but even working it out would be tough. My list and lots of other info was lost from my computer but I didn't have any songs down as faves but for Joe's "Red Eye" by War on Drugs. A particularly good performance was done on the Letterman show.

@@oppothumbs1 The Warren Zevon videos during his final illness are amazing. (Very tender moment when Bruce Springsteen give him a kiss.) Not part of letterman but thought about that. Great that Dave gave Warren a full show. One of the great moments in televison history.

Sharon Von Etten track is heartbreaking. Pacing is a bit too pedestrian for me, but the lyrics do kill. More recent was her track with Angel Olsen, 'Like I used to' which really does kill my heart and also proves me a hypocrite 'cos of the same pacing. Good stuff all the same x

Now I'm beginning to wonder what pop had to offer in 2014. The Taylor Swift track isn't bad, but pretty boring. Gotta admit, this is a time I kinda missed, and I appreciate the work you guys put it, but I hope it's gonna get better. Loves. x

I'm with you on the T-Swift. I'm not very familiar with Swift's work, but if that's supposed to be one of her best tracks it doesn't motivate me to investigate her further.

    2014:
🏆Song of the Year: My Silver Lining, First Aid Kit
    😎Wildcard:
    Oceans, Coldplay
Under the Pressure, The War on Drugs
    Heart is a Drum, Beck
    Sisters, Radical Face
    Inside Out, Spoon
    🔥Billboard:
    Happy, Pharrell
    Blue Moon, Beck
    Fever, The Black Keys
    Brooklyn Baby, Lana Del Rey
🤮Worst: Ew, Jimmy Fallon, et al
First Aid Kit’s album “Stay Gold’ was my Album of the Year. Runners up included the work by Beck, The Black Keys, The War on Drugs, Spoon, Lana Del Rey, and Hans Zimmer (Interstellar). Coldplay’s Ghost Stories got an honorable mention as I actually think it’s a 4 star album, even if it gets trashed here. For the first time in their discography, U2 missed my top 5 in 2014, but I still give that album an honorable mention as I think musically its ok; the cover though is utter trash.

I've never been more in sync with Jason than these last two weeks (2013-2014). Very surprised of his Hot 100 Picks, and also didn't see coming "Seasons" as song of the year. Vote for him!
Also, Joe, don't disappoint me with your 2015 winner. There's only one right choice and you're the right guy to choose it.

Yeah. Again. I'd refer back to Zola Jesus for more progressive takes on bad boy good girl love than Lana's 'Sad Girl'. Lana's later stuff is better than this; less self aware and cheesy. x

Obviously, I'm not going to unsubscribe 'cos you guys are brilliant. This song, though, it's hard to get through - kinda like some sorta horrible cross between someone's idea of an x-factor winner with a tik-tok newbie. It's going to be hard to beat x

I was sincerely hoping that you would all pick "Shake It Off" as the worst song of the year. Around the same time, I read some very intelligent comments by Taylor Swift in the Wall Street Journal, so that song was particularly disappointing.

'Follow your arrow' is deffo and anthem for liberals who need to equivocate in the face of their own guilt, but it is infectious if a little bland. Good one x
