10 for '09
My Maudlin Career - Camera Obscura
Kicking off with the rousing French Navy, My Maudlin career is eleven songs of pop perfection. Tracyanne and the Camera Obscura team are at the top of their game. Strings, horns, and razor-sharp songwriting, this is a gentle classic if you have any interest at all in the pop side of popular music.
Mister Pop - The Clean
This is the fifth and so-far most recent LP by The Clean. Solo releases have kept the Kilgour brothers productive, but we have to hope that they have more to say as The Clean. In the mean-time enjoy this captivating slice of psychedelic jangle.
Merriweather Post Pavillion - Animal Collective
Not much to add to Kramzer's great rundown on this classic. Be sure to check out the EP Fall Be Kind. A five-track release from later in 2009 that works as a nice compliment to the LP. It runs to only 27 minutes so misses the 30-minute cut-off, otherwise would be worth its own entry in the best of the year.
Fits - White Denim
White Denim will get better, much better, but Fits is still an LP that deserves to be noticed. The psychedelic rock revival starts and ends here. Not a genre that I can muster much enthusiasm for but White Denim is the exception to the rule. The songs don't outstay their welcome which doesn't allow the excellent musicianship to overwhelm the tunes.
Beware - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
If you took the look and swagger of The Band's self-titled second LP you would have Will Oldham's hillbilly schtick. If it is just affectation it is remarkably effective. And the Bonnie 'Prince' Billy releases are remarkably consistent. The term Americana definitely seems to imply affectation, and there is nothing affected about this LP. The 19th-century vibe fits perfectly in our 21st-century world.
Humbug - Arctic Monkeys
Whatever fears I had of Josh Homme coming in and turning Arctic Monkeys into some nu-metal sludge rock were unfounded. Crying Lightning has some of the guitar sounds you would expect to hear in a stadium but it doesn't overwhelm Alex Turner's songwriting. More than a transitional LP than a full success, but one that I revisit a lot.
Far - Regina Spektor
The first Regina Spektor LP to grab me from beginning to end. Personal songs that can cut deep with the sweetest piano-driven melodies behind them.
Townes - Steve Earle
Taking on the great Townes Van Zandt catalog for a whole LP. These songs deserve exposure and Steve Earle was the perfect vehicle.
Popular Songs - Yo La Tengo
The LP opens with fuzzed-out guitar merging with the swell of strings, but it was a farewell of sorts as the following releases have been quiet, introspective, and hard to label. periodically Double or Triple sounds like a Zombies outtake and is a great place to start with Popular Songs.
I'm Going Away - The Fiery Furnaces
The most accessible Fiery Furnaces LP since their debut Gallow's Bark. A precursor to Eleanor Friedberger's enjoyable solo career.
1. Peter Doherty - Grace/Wastelands
2. Mos Def - The Ecstatic
3. Magnolia Electric Co. Josephine
4. Vic Chesnutt - At The Cut
5. Monsters of Folk - Monsters Of Folk
@badfishy911 Vic was unlike any musician I know. He had such a unique voice, especially in his lyrics, and he was so real and open and vulnerable without ever becoming "self-exploitative" or pitiful.
One of his last shows is on YT (the neighbors dog) and it's really incredibly powerful. Check it out if you haven't yet.
I can't keep up with you guys anymore! I will have to post my list later. Just too much I still want to hear and not enough time. Well done gentlemen!
For me, that's true of every year in the entire series! At some point I just have to cut off listening to 'new' albums and say, "This is gonna have to be my list for now." I can always come back and change it later.
Great recommendations! I had never heard of Benjy Ferree, but I promptly purchased the album 'cause it sounded awesome. Here's my top 5 for 2009:
5) Norah Jones - The Fall
4) Muse - The Resistance
3) Fun. - Aim and Ignite
2) Bob Dylan - Together Through Life
1) The Black Crowes - Before the Frost...Until the Freeze
Hey guys. I found this channel a few weeks ago and I've been checking back your old videos, specially the Album of the Year ones. I just want to say thank you for doing this. It has kept me entertained during this tough second lockdown. I really enjoy listening to the three of you as you all have different tastes and personalities and yet you have things in common with each other. And of course every now and then I recognize myself in your choices (but not this year). I admire your dedication and patience to listen to often extensive (and sometimes boring) discographies, artists that you don't even like, and still be able to produce articulate comments. I could never submit myself to listen to every album by Billy Joel or Sonic Youth (and I like Sonic Youth). Keep doing this, guys. Cheers!
As for my 2009 picks, well, I don't think it was that great a year.
Noble Beast by Andrew Bird is my favourite album.
God Help The Girl (a Stuart Murdoch project) is a close second and it's arguably a better album.
Regina Spektor's Far is very good but a bit over produced.
Charlotte Gainsbourg's IRM (produced by Beck) is also pretty good.
yeah I discovered them a few months ago and have now made lists from 1965-2020. I'm a bit burned out but it was a good exercise. I'm also listening to 10+ albums each month from the previous month to be ready for 2021
Here here!!👍👍👍 What a good comment...I think all of the people coming across this channel feel the same.

2009 / Here are my favorites for that year / Mes favoris pour cette année sont :
1 : Bible Belt - DIANE BIRCH .
2 : The Fall - NORAH JONES .
3 : No Line On The Horizon - U2 .
4 : This Time - (THE) ROBERT CRAY (BAND) .
5 : Untitled #23 - THE CHURCH .
My favourite album of 2009 is by a band that I grew to appreciate more with each release throughout the decade, and I consider this album to be their greatest achievement:
1. The Resistance - Muse
2. West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum - Kasabian
3. Before The Frost... Until The Freeze - Black Crowes
4. Humbug - Arctic Monkeys
5. Keep Calm And Carry On - Stereophonics
Rock music wasn’t dead in the 00s but it was definitely struggling for survival.
For me, Muse peaked at the first two albums. But I like all of their records.
Obviously I like it a lot. US of Eurasia and Guiding Light would be on my top 10 songs list. - Joe
Nice list. We both have Kasabian at #2. I got Muse at #3.
@@TastesLikeMusic I hope you guys get round to ranking the Muse albums at some point but I somehow get the feeling you will be outvoted, Joe, so we will probably have to wait a long time for them to be featured.
@@NaughtyVampireGod I see you have Franz Ferdinand in your list as well, who I also like. Just like another commentator, however, I’m not familiar with Dolly Rocker Movement so I will give them a listen.
I need a full Dawes Listography.
My list:
1. Devendra Banhart: What Will We Be?
2. The Flaming Lips: Embryonic
3. Little Dragon: Machine Dreams
4. Wilco: Wilco (The Album)
5. Charlotte Gainsbourg: IRM
Does anyone else feel like the 00’s doesn’t feel like it’s own definitive decade in the same way the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and even 90’s do? It just feels like it’s meshed with the 10’s - anything post-2000 feels the same. It might just be an age thing that to be fair though
I feel ya. If there are definitive movements in the aughts like Grunge or Nu Metal, I don't know what they are.
@@179rich In terms of rock music I suppose you could point to the rise of indie rock, led by bands like Arcade Fire. But yeah, beyond that I'm having trouble thinking of what the 2000s "musical identity" would be.
I see a strong delineation between 2000-2009 and 2010-2019. the latter decade is much less towards my taste honestly. Although 2000 is around the point where barely any of the top selling albums each year were something I would buy.
I like almost no rock post 2010 but there's a fair bit of stuff I like in the early 2000's
I'd point towards there being progressive elements appearing in most genres...like language, music is becoming more hybridized the more exposure to styles people can enjoy....maybe the 00s was more about being progressive to one extreme or another.....

Not an amazing year by any means but the Manics' poignant release (featuring the lyrics of Richey Edwards - by then missing for 14 years) just beats out Dylan and the Sprouts. Far was Regina Spektor at her most beguiling. Humbug could have been a great album if Josh Homme hadn't got involved. And a shout out for the now forgotten but rather lovely The Duke and The King.

Honorable mentions:
• Outer South - Conor Oberst, etc
• Why Are There Mountains - Cymbals Eat Guitars
• Sun Gangs - The Veils
• Tinted Windows - Tinted Windows (best supergroup of the year)
• Monsters of Folk - Monsters of Folk (2nd best supergroup of the year)
• Around the Well - Iron & Wine. The 2009 record I play most often today, but it's a compilation of outtakes/b-sides/covers, so it doesn't count. It's especially good on weekends, out by the pool. It's got a little steel guitar, and even a New Order cover. You'll love it!
Pretty good calls. I have a good many of those. Would have the Doves in Top 5 for sure. I would probably have Phoenix's "Amadeus" album close to top; the Horrors. Melody Gardot, Lady Gaga, Arctic Monkeys was pretty good; as were the Manic St Preachers. Maybe St Vincent would be #1 for the year. Oh, and Yeah Yeah Yeah.
Okay: St Vincent, Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Doves and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Or Girls, Animal Collective.
It's funny: as the years go on, one sees each one of you now digging into their own direction. With the earlier 60's -80's albums there is much consensus. But now you get Joe going Metal or strong Pop, Jason with alt, relatively unknown singer/ songwriters, and Kramzer, who by now I agree with the most.
BARONESS! Nice Joe!!! Glad when some Metal shows up on the channel and Joe is usually the one that drags it in kicking and screaming.
Dawes' "North Country" is instant gratification that doesn't spoil over time. 'Peace in the Valley' is a killer closing track.
Here are the my top5

Just listening to wild beasts now having forgotten how much I luuuuurrrrve it....they were good times boyyyyzzzz....
Glad there's a fellow Wild Beast fan on here....the next two albums of theirs are real contenders for me too🤘🤘
I'm really out of my comfort zone here... It's not that I don't like new music, but here in Norway music stores were closing down faster than the speed of light by this time, and with the decline of physical media I was sorta' out of the game. I bought a house in '11 which made me go back to my parets and reclaim my vinyl collection - and that was mostly music from before '95...
I. Pearl Jam - Backspacer
II. Salem Al Fakir - Astronaut
III. Superfamily - Guns Tonight
IV. Animals As Leaders - S/T
V. John Mayer - Battle Studies
You still came up with a cool list.
Yanks 5

Middle Cyclone - Neko Case
Them Crooked Vultures
Crooked Vultures has a Brit in the band! It's not a total shutout!
Regarding qualification as an album: I think twenty-five minutes is the minimum running-time. Great video, guys!
Yeah. The Ramones debut is less than 30 minutes long, who's going to say that's not an album? Might as well just count EPs.
It's Blitz- The Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Crissy Hynde goes to the disco via South Korea.
Come Back to the Five and Dime... Awesome Robert Altman reference going on there 🎥
The decade goes out with a whimper. I was barely able to put together a top 5.

4. Tonight - Franz Ferdinand
5. Lungs - Florence and the Machine
6. It's Not Me, It's You - Lily Allen
Muse was originally on my list, but after a few more listens, I just couldn't keep it there. I liked the hits, but the rest missed -- badly.
C’mon Mark. If you can’t get down with a three part symphony I don’t know what to tell you. I like the non-hits more than the singles. - Joe
Got some same picks there. We both have Tonight: Franz Ferninand at #4. Silversun Pickups. Florence and the Machine, and Lily Allen were potential HMs but didn't quite make it for me.
@@TastesLikeMusic Well, Joe, I think we're going to have to disagree a little bit here. The three- part mini opus was my favorite part of the album outside the big hits, but the rest was a big swing and miss. Or maybe a deep drive to the warning track, but still an out. I wanted to like them more than I did, but I just couldn't get there.
@@NaughtyVampireGod Dammit, I should have mentioned Lily Allen in my reply to yesterday's podcast. She's funny as hell.
@@markgatica12 Yes she is. Would have been a great addition. i don't think any ladies were mentioned.

4. Doves - Kingdom of Rust
3. The Horrors - Primary Colours
2. Richard Hawley - Truelove's Gutter
1. Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know. True story: Drove to a friend's playing this loudly and an intense headache came on. Collapsed at friend's door and was rushed to A & E where it transpired I had a brain bleed. When I woke, in my morphine-addled imagination I believed a sword-wielding Dio had been tattooed across my head, but it was just the stapled-up wound from the operation. Thus the album has a special place in my heart, and brain.
My top 5
5. Murder By Pride (Stryper)
4. Karma (Winger)
3. Polaris (Stratovarius)

A bleak year for me - work took over my life, to a large extent, and while I am always listening to music, I fell back onto what I knew I liked in 2009. Maybe The Resistance and Them Crooked Vultures would make my top 5, but I would actually have to get out of my chair and check my discs to see what I own that was actually released in this year.
I will have to add Animal Collective to my homework list (I can hear Kramzer sigh and throw his hands up in the air and say, "Finally!") although I have already put my toes in the water with Girls and I was pleasantly surprised (does Chris Owens sound like Elvis Costello, or am I mistaken?) Anyway, this is definitely much more of a homework year (adding Florence and the Machine to my list as well - they are big in Oz, just not with me) and without you guys, I wouldn't even know where to start.
1. The Dolly Rocker Movement - Our Days Mind the Tyme
2. Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
3. Muse - The Resistance
4. Tonight: Franz Ferdinand
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Let's Blitz!
HM (alpha):
Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown
The Sounds - Crossing the Rubicon
Tinted Windows -s/t
Not a bad year. My #1 album is sometimes on 2010 lists. The album was released in '09 in their home country of Australia, the following year in the US and elsewhere. This is a neo-psychedelic masterpiece. The Dolly Rockers third and unfortuantely final album. The top 3 are quite close. The #5 spot is really up for grabs. I gave it to the YYYs for originality but The Sounds and Tinted Windows could easily be there. Green Day sort of there for nostalgia reasons. Still sounds solid, though. Their last good album for sure.
We're kind of fishing in the same pond. I'll check out DRM. Never heard of them before, but they sound interesting.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs lost my on that release. I heard that Tonight: Franz Ferdinand album yesterday and I like the second to last three songs quite a bit. Muse will be on my list when I get around to finalizing it.
@@markgatica12 Yeah Mark. Same pond. You might like Kasabian as well. (Big in UK. Not in States - where I am at.) Let me know yer thoughts on DRM.
@@179rich Hi Rich. Oh really. Didn't like Let's Blitz!, huh? Honestly it JUST made the #5 spot for me. For Franz Ferdinand I think their best is the first two albums.
@@NaughtyVampireGod Interesting. Very retro. Sounds like a perfect blend of Moody Blues and The Doors with a little early Pink Floyd thrown in. If you had a time machine you could send this record back to 1968 and no one would find it out of place. Thanks for the advice.

I do recall that you mentioned Bloodmoon: I in the Best of 2021 video. That one is by far their mellowest release up to date (it was a collaboration with Chelsea Wolfe, who plays a blend of gothic rock and folk). In contrast, Axe to Fall is a brutal metalcore album with tons of harsh vocals and breakneck tempos. Converge has been one of the best bands in this genre for over 25 years, and I’ve enjoyed all of their releases so far.

That Gong album was a great return, I just found it a bit long towards the end and that is why it did not make my list...
I need to check that Peter Hammill album that for unknown reasons I do not have in my collection, I have Singularity and Consequences, i.e. the one before and the one after but miss Thin Air.
@@roxannewalsh I think you will enjoy: Thin Air. As you might have guessed the theme of the album deals with "disappearance". There's no percussion and as usual Hammill does everything on it. I see that Dinosaur Jr is your number 1, it very nearly was for me too! I should've also included Fork In The Road in my honourable mentions, not bad at all.
@@jesuschambers The Peter Hammill album is quality stuff, as usually with this artist. Very strong vocal performances. The only thing, the longer tunes, e.g. The Mercy or Diminished start excellent but the second half fades into ambient - maybe he wants to illustrate the lyrics with it, I just find it too long.
@@roxannewalsh I agree with you and that's why it didn't get in my top 5 but it certainly deserves an honourable mention. Artists like Van Der Graaf Generator, Gong, Steve Hillage etc. were introduced to me for the first time by a DJ from your side of the world, the great and sadly missed: Alan "Fluff" Freeman(One of my heroes). I used to listen to his saturday show religiously and also Tommy Vance on his friday night rock show. Radio Caroline the pirate ship radio station also was indispensable during the 70's. I like maybe one or two songs on It's Blitz! I didn't care for their new direction, especially compared to their first two albums. Actually, I like disco OK I just didn't think much of the songs. Fantasies will rank high once I get around to finishing my list. Actor will probably be on there too.
2009.....well, Mastodon's Crack the Skye was released that year. That was epic for my tastes in heavy rock.
I was listening to tons of classical music around this time. Cleansing the pallet. Going to Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in NYC on a regular basis. I saw some of the greatest orchestra's in the world perform in those halls.
Still, I liked GaGa's Fame thing. A coworker played it all the time. There were some things I liked but very little I bought. Crack the Skye is one that I actually bought. The live album "Live at Aragon" contained a DVD of the entire show. I had not felt that excited about a rock band in a long time. I thought it was over. I'm glad I was wrong. Crack the Skye remains my choice record by Mastodon. They went right into my wheelhouse with that one. Cheers.

I gave Merriweather Post Pavilion and St. Vincent another try in preparation for this year's list...Both ended up in the solid 2,5 star bin, so it seems I am a hopeless candidate here - St. Vincent's next album fared slightly better with me.
I have a higher estimation of the St Vincent album than you do but it didn't quite reach the 4-star threshold for me... which is why I couldn't bring myself to put it in my top 5.
I was a bit disappointed in Strange Mercy only because the few times the music really starts to cut loose it stops.

Nice! It's been about 8 years since I discovered that Metric album and I still get those melodies stuck in my head. So damn memorable.
I came awfully close to putting that U2 at the top. I wrote a glowing 5 star review of it when it came out but listening again I think I was a little too enthusiastic that it was so much better than the previous two and I overrated it a bit. 4.5 stars., still fantastic.
The Animal Collective is its own unique sound world, so it gets props for that.

Another year where I struggled to come up with five records which I loved enough front to back, with the cohesion befitting a great album... no runner ups, and a couple of titles I've only gotten into in more recent years (no such problems in 2010 though)... lots of great songs this year, as always though --
Kram, I think "Constant Hitmaker" was released in 2008, it made my album list in that year (but would be my #2 or 3 this year if I'm wrong). It's a solid album either way, but as it happens, I have another Woodsist title in my top spot:

2009 is scraping the bottom of the barrel for me. Partly, I was tuned in less to new stuff and partly, a lot of what I heard just didn't stick with me. For example, I listened to Merriweather Post Pavilion and I didn't like how dense the songs were. There's too much going on in those mixes and no air in those songs! I also heard That Monsters of Folk album or at least some tracks from it. Cool collaboration concept, but overall, meh! I love Yo La Tengo, but Popular Songs made virtually zero impression on me. The self-titled Wilco album was OK, but pretty by the numbers. I checked out the XX. They didn't do anything for me. Here are the few albums I will go back to from 2009:
1. Middle Cyclone- Neko Case
2. The Hazards of Love- The Decemberists
3. There is No Enemy- Built to Spill
4. No Line on the Horizon- U2 (I know. A weird pick considering the previous three and the other albums I mention. In the 80's and 90's, I was a huge U2 fan. After Achtung Baby, I got off the bus, and didn't actively listen to them for years. This one got me interested again. Working with Lanois and Eno on board, U2 was able to make a dark atmospheric-sounding album reminiscent of The Unforgettable Fire)
I think that's all I got for 2009. At least, those albums comprise ones I would listen to more than a few times. Need to listen to more and could possibly get added later: The Eternal- Sonic Youth, Embryonic- The Flaming Lips, Hospice- The Antlers, Veckatimest- Grizzly Bear. You guys made me curious about Girls. I'll have to check out Album.
Bold prediction: The Beach Boys' Smile Sessions will be eligible for favorite albums of 2011 and make at least TWO of your guys' lists.
Kramzer: Glad to see St. Vincent! Jason: Glad to see Dirty Projectors! Joe: Glad to see... hmmm. Well, you are a Stevie Wonder & Billy Joel fan! That's a cool thing.
5. Mos Def -- The Ecstatic. Post indie stoner rap? Maybe. But if it is, that's hardly a bad thing. His best since the seminal debut.
4. Thee Oh Sees -- Help. This is the kinda garage rock that feels like mansion rock. Hooky, psychedelic, weird, rocking'. It's all there.
3. Real Estate (self-titled). One of the indie bands that can really write enduring tunes that will continue to hold up. The lack of guile helps here.
2. St. Vincent -- Actor. She'll be around for a while, yet.
1. Grizzly Bear -- Veckatimest. Let's see... well, that was easy.
Honorable mention(s):
Neko Case -- Middle Cyclone. Not sure about the album cover, but the music is pretty compelling. That voice of hers....
MF DOOM -- Born Like This. His last major project. That alone is important enough. RIP.
Dirty Projectors -- Bitte Orca. Even Paul McCartney likes them!
Unhonoarble mention:
Van Morrison -- Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Let's see, do I want to hear the studio masterpiece version from 1968 or hear this live version recorded 41 years later? To be fair, it's a fine performance. But that studio version, though....

Well, the 30 minute limit takes classics such as Reign in Blood (Slayer), Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme (Simon and Garfunkel), Nashville Skyline (Dylan), Pink Moon (Nick Drake), and a few other classics out of the running. Just because some artists can put together a solid set of songs in less than half an hour, why would it be disqualified? As they say in sports, if you're good enough, you're old enough. If you're good enough, you're long enough.
This is true, maybe our limit should be 20 minutes. We just want to keep short EPs out of the running. Someone throwing together 3 songs shouldn’t be given the same acclaim as someone making a great LP even if those 3 songs are fantastic. Where one draws that line though is somewhat arbitrary. -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic Compromise at 25 min? 20 min is real short. EP territory. Anyways . .
@@TastesLikeMusic Randy Newman's 1968 album was 27 minutes long, you ranked it this week.
10 songs on a classic folk or country album was normal and not each of them was above 3 minutes.
Punk had many short albums, the first Ramones albums barely exceeded 30 minutes even with 12 songs on them.
And then...the 70min + length of many albums of the CD age was rarely ever justified, many would have been far better if edited - just like many double albums.
If something comes across as a finished statement like in all the examples given, then it is an album. Like Joe would say "I know one if I see one..."
I mostly was using the EP length as a reason to put Gaga second. Plus it came packaged with The Fame. It didn’t feel like a complete artistic statement despite its 30 minute length and fabulousness. - Joe
We can just go on a case by case basis - kram
The XX, Gossip - Music For Men.

1. Polvo - In Prism (even better than their 90s output, IMO. A little less angular, less mathy)

3 The Incident by Porcupine Tree 9/10 (fabulous...a recent find....drawing the line is genius...loving it more with every listen.)
2 Two Dancers by Wild Beasts 9.5/10 (this and next 2 albums are amazing records by a band sadly no longer around)
1 The Crying Light by Anthony and the Johnsons 10/10 🏆 (my favourite by this fab band and still find it entrances with every listen...already a classic...stunning...)
Weak year for me. Other than the Avett Brothers, I'm not sure I liked any of these albums when I first heard them, but lo and behold they grow over time, and I come back with renewed interest!
1. The XX- The XX
2. I and Love and You- The Avett Brothers
3. Veckatimest- Grizzly Bear
4. The Fame Monster- Lady Gaga
5. Merriweather Post Pavilion- Animal Collective
This one was hard... 2009 is honestly not a great year, but here it is:
1. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
2. Sienna Root - Different Realities
3. Tyler The Creator - Bastard
4. The Antlers - Hospice
5. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Hospice sucks. I’m glad it’s been largely forgotten and The Antlers’ fanbase is very small.
2009 was fantastic
Guitar Town (1986)
Exit 0 (1987)
Copperhead Road (1988)
Train A Comin’ (1995)
I Feel Alright (1996)
El corazon (1997)
The Mountain (1999)
Transcendental Blues (2000)
Jerusalem (2002)
Just an American Boy (2003)
Townes (2009)
What's wrong with Steve guys? Don't ask me to rephrase the question.
Nothing. He’s good. Guitar Town, Copperhead Road probably my favorites. The Hard Way is good too. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Did I wake you up? Must be quite early in Pittsburgh(?) Have a nice day!
Girls - Self titled is a great album!
Weak year in my book, but these two are all-time favorites:
Untitled #23 - The Church (among their many ignored brilliant albums)
Double Silence - Karoline Hausted

@@TastesLikeMusic Way better than I expected.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Anytime you can get 5 that's a win. Nice going. -Jason
This was a pretty weak year from my POV. I think there was a clear standout, but the rest of my top 5 are just pretty good.
1. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
2. Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer
3. A.A. Bondy - When the Devil's Loose
4. The xx - xx.
5. Wilco - Wilco (The Album)
A couple of others I considered were Dan Auerbach's Keep it Hid (I've kind of soured on the Black Keys over the years, but this is a good solo effort), Pearl Jam's Backspacer, and Discovery's LP (electropop side project of Vampire Weekend's Rostam and the singer from Ra Ra Riot).
I only just discovered that Phoenix album this week. It made my top 10 and it might rise into my top 5 as I listen to it more.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I think it's a great sounding album and every minute is just super catchy. The lyrics are a little meh at times, but they're French, so I'll give them a pass.
Their previous album It’s Never Been Like That is way better and way catchier. -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
@@TastesLikeMusic disagree. I liked their previous album, but this is way better.
5. Cosmic Egg by Wolfmother
4. Surface Paradise by Root
3. The Audacity Of Hype by Jello Biafra And The Guantanamo School Of Medicine
2. Liebe Ist Für Alle Da by Rammstein
1. Street Sweeper Social Club self titled
HM- Bruce Springsteen - Working on a Dream, Orianthi - Believe, Rodolphe Burger - Valley Session, Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plague Lovers, Judy Dyble - Talking With Strangers
5. Sonic Youth - The Eternal (Former Pavement bass man Mark Ibold joins the band, so Kim Gordon becomes third guitarist and main vocalist here. To say that they play more rock songs than ever may be misleading - this comes as close to either song or rock than this band had ever come, i.e. still light years away from conventional. )
4. Flaming Lips - Embryonic (This seems to go back 20 years into their own catalogue without being nostalgic, rather a return to initial concepts and ideas. And then it goes back from there another large step to the early 70s when German Krautrock legend Faust released their ground breaking early LPs. And after they picked up all these threads from the past, they take them to 2009 and project them into the future. This is where the adventure begins and we are invited for the trip.)
3. New York Dolls - 'Cause I Sez So (Their return in 2006 was almost sensational and Too Good to be True. Their second album after the comeback is more of a David Johansen album than a Dolls album. This has more to do with expectations than with the quality because this is a very good David Johansen album and that means something to me as well.)
2. Wussy - Wussy (Each of the songs is packed as full as possible with contradictions. You hardly can describe the complicated relationship that Chuck and Lisa seem to have better than in the way they try on this album. Happiness Bleeds is ultimately painful until the chorus of "lalala, baby, I love you" interrupts the verses. Is this a breakup album "This Will Not End Well" (which rhymes with "hell" and "wedding bell") or are they fighting for their relationship to succeed? "Well, honey, you're the pain and the antidote." They are constantly torn between disaster and enthusiastic optimism - and the great thing is how their voices and guitars illustrate their struggle. Another fascinating view into Wussy's world of turmoil.
1. Dinosaur Jr. - Farm (Melodies is their magic ingredient that makes each of these noisy tunes worth listening to. Even the longer tunes are full of purpose to build up to a chorus that is memorable. This is exactly what sets Neil Young & Crazy Horse apart from grunge noisemakers and this is what Mascis and his companions have understood. Their 2007 comeback was one of the best things to happen to rock in the 2000s. This release proves that Beyond was no incident.)
The complete top 10 are 4,5 star albums (winner is 5). And then I have another 10 albums with 4 stars for the top 20 of this year.
Interesting that Jason, a huge Dino fan, didn't even mention Farm. Kramzer did!
@@179rich He said in another video that he does not listen to loud music anymore, he limits himself to just that one genre by now where all his nominations come from.
11. Tony Allen - Secret Agent
12. Steeleye Span - Cogs, Wheels and Lovers
13. Robyn Hitchcock - Goodnight Oslo
14. Neil Young - Fork in the Road
15. Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit
16. Rosanne Cash - The List
17. Weather Station - The Line
18. Mission of Burma - The Sound the Speed the Light
19. Alan Stivell - Emerald
20. Ian Hunter - Man Overboard
21. Patterson Hood - Murdering Oscar (and Other Love Songs)
@@roxannewalsh Thanks for posting the rest of your list. It saves me a bit of time.
A lot of albums would have been better if they were shorter I reckon.
4. Waking Up-One Republic
3. Fantasies-Metric
2. Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King-Dave Matthews Band
1. Battle Studies-John Mayer
Another “in progress” year for me, as there are at least a couple albums in my current rotation that sound really promising initially and could move up (Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle and Sweet Trip - You Will Never Know Why).
My current top 5:
1. Paper Masques - Tell the Ghosts It’s Suppertime (a local Philly band that was the brainchild of my friend Steve Quaranta, so I’m biased 😂- these songs which he describes as “Sonic Youth if they were a folk band” are totally a part of my blood from hearing him play them a lot at open mics and shows)
2. Animal Collective - Merriwether Post Pavilion
3. The Raveonettes - In and Out of Control (a classic “happy pop melodies married to dark lyrics” album)
4. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
5. Steve Hackett - Out of the Tunnel’s Mouth
Sweet Trip made it into my top 5. I only just discovered that album this week but I thought it was good enough to get the nod.
