The whole series is quite good in their own ways, the original trilogy definitive edition all work great and all have their own little quirks to learn. AoE has always been a bit loose with the pathfinding and AI. That isn't ideal but they have always made up for it in excellent game design that overcomes it. AoE3 is probably the weakest entry, it's from that dark time in gaming when everything was kinda going to shit. It is still better than most RTS.

In, AOE there are strategies like rush, where the other player rushes out military units to raid which can be devastating if you are building your economy with no walls. Other times, the AI might be turtling instead, which is why they didn’t attack you in the beginning.

There's little things missing and I'm not sure why like random nations instead of having to pick one, choosing your colour, replays, hotkeys, and a couple other things but those can all be added in the near future. I'm glad relic made an overall excellent sequel to a really good RTS series. Now let's hope somehow EA can do the same with command and conquer.

but yea, rts genre died out i agree, roleplaying took over, and rts didnt have any good new ideas to offer

Looks great, but unless the online community picks up coupled with big tournaments on stages with decent prize money, the pro’s won’t switch from AoE2de. It feels like the micro won’t be able to be intense enough to lure them in especially with the way the units work. One good thing is it looks like they have expanded on the economy side of the game while keeping elements from AoE2.
I’m predicting this will be the same as AoE3, be popular for 6 months then people will go back to 2. Almost like Starcraft 1 & 2 with a decent amount of pro’s going back to SC1 due to broken mechanics of SC2.

You missed out. It was a wonder watching these cheeky little... twits in AOE1 & 2 wander around and do stuff like deforestation, get attacked by wild animals, or sneak off and try to stand around doing nothing until you notice and killed them like a crewel and vindictive god. Use to run this in the background at night as a sort of fish tank. Good stuff.

What a surprise! I thought you would not review in the end. So glad to see you finally did it. It still kinda pales in comparison to AoE2, which is untouchable as an RTS, but 4 is still good. Thanks for doing the review!!

AoE 2 DE has much more sophisticated AI. Infinitely more customizable Skirmish mode and like 250h worth of campaings, which are really quite charming even though they don't have nearly as much production value as 4.

I was wondering if you were going to make this video and I'm glad you made it. I'm a fan of aoe games, specially AoE2, but in my opinion this one will refresh the franchise.
And one more thing; I don't want to tell you to play AoE2 if you're new in the granchise, play this, this aoe is some mix of the good stuff of all the previous aoe games, but of course it needs more time to fix some little things.
This game really deserves the support of youtubers like you. Thank you ;)

Love it how Mack is quite quick to mention his historical ‘knowledge’ of the early medieval period and the events of 1066, saying that they ‘led on’ to the Hundred Years War 300 years later, but then gets confused about playing during the Hundred Years War and encountering firearms which were widely introduced maybe 50 years after. He’s a great game reviewer but I’m glad he’s not a history teacher
