    actually it is possible to transfer, for example, your artisans to other islands so they can work there... Its available with a commuter harbour when you have engineers :)

    At 6:34 I mention you have to start again when you go to a new island, I should have clarified that you do not start the game again but you do start the entire production again on the new island. It is ofc a lot easier and faster as you will probably have a lot of materials and money on hand.

    • @nochsoeiner
      @nochsoeiner Před 5 lety +18

      well..not quite.. after the artisan population level, the engineers at population lvl4 you can build an extra harbour to share workers across islands.. so you dont have to start from scratch at new islands at all ;)

    Summary
    It’s a game that can be played by even someone new to the franchise, this was my first go at Anno which is why I customised the game making it a little more forgiving for myself and I do recommend you tweak it a bit if you are new to the game. Now however I am ready to up the difficulty and really test myself against the competition.
    Aside from the few annoying things like find the missing person quest or the cone shaped navigation marker in the mini map the game is brilliant. Watching your island grow is so much fun and it all looks and sounds really great. It’s such a flexible game too, you can basically do whatever you like, power, economy or both.
    It’s one of them games that does not come along very often that is a pure joy to play, deep but pretty much easy to play. Don’t rely on the tutorial though, it’s pants, I have a linked a decent video in the description that should help.

    Quick tip: If you hold down the mouse button when you place houses, you can build more than one at a time - And use the upgrade tool the same way to upgrade a bunch of houses at once too. ;)
    And when you do the "find this person", or "find the dogs" quests from your citizens, you can either read where you can find them in the quest charter, or click on the quest where the timer is, and it will send you to where you can find the person. It's the easiest quests in my opinion, and I rarely spend more than a minute on them, usually seconds.

    Anno 1800 is so beautiful, it sets the standard for beautiful art direction and graphics in a City Builder. Back in the day Age of Empires 3 did the same for RTS when it came out, compared to the blocky nature of Warcraft 3 AOE3 was on a whole different level. It was like a Constable painting that you could actually play in. AOE4 dropping that art direction and returning to AOE2's was particularly devastating for me, I had waited SO LONG for AOE4, and I envisioned a game that exceeded Anno 1800 and was at least on the level of Total War: Warhammer 2.

    • @ApatLang
      @ApatLang Před rokem +1

      ugh same. AOE4 was such a letdown. Idk why they went back to AOE2 timeframe. I thought they were doing it chornologically. Would've been so cool to introduce more new gameplay mechanics

    As long as you make adequate provisions to take care of riots, fires and illness there is hardly any issue with having multiple islands. You can pretty much ignore the warnings. Just make sure the docks are set to sell and over stock of goods. I'm on my 6th new game and I now have city layouts and farm layouts burnt into my brain. Top tip is to "claim" as many islands as you can early on. You don't have to build straight away, just throw down the docks and maybe some cannons. I then specialise each island and create a round robin supply route with ships. Soap and sausages come from one island and supply all the others. That also helps keep my main island less polluted and better for visitors later on. I have had several warnings from the game for playing way too long though XD

  • @gentlesirpancakebottoms6692

    Fun fact. When Sunflowers studios and Max design(the original Anno developer) was closed many of them merged with Bluebyte during the ubisoft takeover. So the Anno series has mainly been made by the same people since 1998.

    As an old time 1404 and 1701 anno fan, after playing 2070 and 2205, I'm really happy how 1800 turned out. They got back to their roots and understood what made the old time games great.

  • @Claude-Eckel
    @Claude-Eckel Před 5 lety +1

    Anno 1404, old but still gold. 10 years anniversary in June this year. Till today considered the best Anno title of all. Maybe this latest one will change it? I will definitely go for it. This era might not be as cosy as 1404's end of the Middle Ages... but the devs have got better and better and more experienced as well over the course of ... Anno, and thus I'm expecting even more complex production chains and economy management, a more versatile gameplay overall, plus yet more stunningly looking, animated little details everywhere plus, last but not least, better graphics, also of another era. 2019 :) E.g. what a beautiful shot that was... 8:55
    Anyways, 1404 can still stand its ground, it has aged pretty well, it kinda reflects what good games looked and sounded like back then when games were once great and not everything was bound to shops and microtransaction hells, required internet connections in order to play it and so on and so forth... when gamers were still treated like customers here and there and not like stupid cash cows. Maybe that's why players are still fascinated by Anno 1404. It has its very own, nostalgic charme. And looks great for its age. Actually more kinda cute. :) I hope, the latest Anno can also create a milestone of its own and in ten years from now we might say again: _'Look at this beautiful game! That's how games should look and feel like: beautiful and immersive.'_
    Anno brought me back to Ubisoft's fold. Who supports the development of such great games and publishes them - despite all the money greedy trash they also made in the last few years - can't be bad at heart as a company. They still make gorgeous games ever and anon, so they can't have forgotten yet, how to create good games, at least not how to find and work with proficient, devoted developer studios and have them creating the one or other gem for them. Clap on all sail and full steam ahead, Anno 1800! ;)
    PS: 13:24 If you have or want to do these _'Where's Wally'_ quests, there's a postcard view (in 1404 it's F1 by default) which helps a lot finding stuff in your settlement which you would otherwise easily miss (like looking under trees, bays etc.)

    Mack, you mentioned that Steam is still taking a high 30% cut, but I've heard that is the industry standard; I heard that the microsoft store takes the same 30% (as an example). If that is true then isn't steam being good by taking the 30% and offering support to those who use their store front? Like didn't Epic even say they can't keep the small % they take forever and that it will eventually raise? Maybe i'm mistaken but I don't think Steam is being ridiculous with their cut if all this is true. Anyway love the content thanks for the informed reviews.

    Anno games are fun at first but ultimately they come down to the same building routine that is optimal. For example x amoint of houses in a squar so that you can fit a fire station and church to keep in range. It becomes this regimented block that you have to build in the same way every time to run smoothly. That then starts to get boring.

    Even though I have spent 100's of hours playing Anno, I was on the fence with this one. But I decided to take the plunge after the positive review and comments. My first impressions are that it is better than 1404 and 2070. I am loving it. A big thank you to Mack and the comments for helping me decide.

      I've played some of 2070 but I couldn't get into it much. I think I played one of the other ones too years ago but forget which. I usually prefer sci fi games, but city building sci fi isnt as fun as a time period like 1800.

    I've enjoyed this series very much and I'm pleased to see this iteration keeps all the good bits and improves where needed. Those "find this person in the crowd" quests are still around, can't help but chuckle at all the hours I spent looking for monks, nuns, spies, and such from Dawn of Discovery (Anno 1404). Great review Mack, thank you!

    You said you never plaid an anno game before, in that case, i highly suggest you take a look at anno 1404 (with its expansion) it is probably the best title of the series. Closly followed by 2070 and 1800.

    Not specific to this game but GOD FORBID a game developer makes a good tutorial/campaign mode. Theres nothing quite like buying a game and then spending hours on youtube and forums (yea, I love waiting hours for someone to post some snarky response to a question like "How do I do X? Theres no tooltips or other explanation." And dont even get me started on developers and their complete lack of putting out game manuals for incredibly complex games. When you have to google stuff like "how do I make an axe to chop trees down?" its pretty stupid. Sure, gather rock, gather sticks, open crafting menu.....until it doesnt tell you how many sticks or rocks you need or even that you need x, y, or z before you do something like get a drink of water.
    You used to be able to, at the very least, look up the manual on developers websites but not anymore. You're SOL unless want to deal with forum posters who answer questions by telling you to do something totally unrelated to your question. And NO, I dont want to spend hours trying to mix and match mats so I can make 1 cloth. Tell me wtf I need. Experimentation is great and all when its in a system that rewards it but otherwise you're just guessing the exact required numbers for each material that are needed to do the most basic tasks of a game.
    I seriously shouldnt have to google "How do I open the Character development screen because I cant find the hotkey in the options. Additionally, its 2021 and shame on any developers that refuse to put in keybinding options after making the most fail-riffic keymap they could come up with. "Huh? millions of games over the past 30 years have used E or F to open doors? Pssh, screw that nonsense. We're going to us Shift+T."
