Glad to be back, thanks for all the support, am not back to full capacity but the odd review here and there is great to get me back up to speed (a reasonable speed this time). I felt a bit rusty doing this and I know the first 2 mins are a bit unclear but it's a review under my belt so am happy. All my reviews are unscripted so I rely totally on thinking on my feet as to what am about to say, my head is still a bit cloudy :)

I found the first mission (Volga) a nice introduction to what I need to expect , open map. Exploration and basic level.
Bunker : Nice excuse to spray bullets
Caspian : A nice immersive change of atmosphere
Taiga : Now the atmosphere was beautiful but the boss fight was very underwhelming personally, the mission if it needed 20-30 minutes early would have hooked me at the perfect time but it is what it is .
The last mission , for me was beautiful, brought me right back to the first two metro games . Linear , scary , stealth , dark and metro tunnels . Started Moscow , mid game was open maped, ended with a return to the core and original features of metro . Beautiful ending for me , brought the character developments together and nice possible ending for a possible sequel

The original Metro 2033 actually had decent AI, but they decided to dumb it down immensely for the Redux and sequels. Sneaking was ridiculously hard too, so in the Redux they made it piss easy with totally blind enemies like in Last Light. Oh, and the game expects you to not go on a killing spree for the good ending, but there's still no 'drag and hide bodies' option...

Good review, honestly thought the game would annoy you to no end because its clunky as all hell.
    Some things that annoyed me
-game crashing 5-6 times throughout my playthrough
-initial loading screens 2-3 minutes long
-the sensitivity on console is quite fucked, but I got used to it after some hours.
-the removal of ammo as currency, it made me feel like I didn't have to survive as much.
-sounds are either completely missing or just broken
-dialogue is bad, like it sounds so fake when each person is talking over another. It's more like they are not talking with eachother but at eachother in an unnatural way
-Each story beat was quite predictable and generic
    -floating enemies
    -getting stuck in stuff
Theres quite a few more. Before anyone has a go at me, I love the game despite its flaws and understand not everyone gets the same issues on any given playthrough.

Changing the keys to what I wanted was not an issue but in game the messages were like "Press ? to roll", which really p'ed me off. Reminded me that “Space Marine” only scored around the 50% positive mark from all reviewers AND players on release.
BTW: Weapons rusting was introduced in "Farcry 3", and it was a great mechanic in the game. Nowhere near a workshop? Shoot your piece of crap till it falls apart, pick up a dead enemy's gun andf get around a clip worth's of value till you fight your way, or run over everyone to a workshop.

I have become old and picky! I am no longer willing to put up with a game that does things for me. Metro 2033 was one of the first games that made me realize how far FPSs had fallen. Story is no substitute for "doing stuff". Or gameplay as I like to think of it.
STALKER is an obvious comparison to the Metro games but in STALKER you get dumped in an open world/map and the game lets you sort it out from there. I'm playing an indie game called "Desolate" at the moment. It's very much in the STALKER/Metro mould. The graphics are middling, the combat is clunky and the voice acting dodgy. But I choose where to go, what to do and how to do it. I'll take that over the gloss of Metro every time.

Metro 2033 was alright, it felt like a survival game when you played ranger hardcore and I liked that a lot. What killed the game(and the series) for me were the numerous cut-scenes every three steps you took and that press E to avoid dying stuff. It killed immersion completely.
But the feeling of dread and world was very well done. When you come out of the Metro the first time with Bourbon and look around the city, it was impressive as hell and only made you wish you could explore more of it.

    • @Greybeard101
      @Greybeard101 Před 5 lety +1

@@MrSamadolfo I do agree. The term "action adventure" is often used for this kind of game and I do see why people like them. Neither do I consider CoD to be the shining example of the FPS genre. The single player campaigns are no better than Metro and there is more to FPSs than players running around one-shotting each other on a multi-player map. My problem is that these kinds of games have become the norm for the genre.
I'm thinking back to single player FPSs like Half-Life, FEAR and STALKER. They put the emphasis on action while telling their story through the gameplay. If you have a few quid/euros/bucks to spare and love FPSs, then I highly recommend an indie game called "DUSK" to see what I mean. The best pure FPS I've played for a long time. Simple graphics and no cut scenes, just perfectly designed levels for combat that also tell the story as you progress. But, nowadays, that's the exception rather than the rule.

I'm so disappointed in this game so far. I've bought ALL the metros and they were a blast. But his one....
The first hour or so of play is cut scenes. I came close to stopping because of it. When I buy a game, I want to play the game, not watch a movie!!!!
And the AI is soooooo dumb!!! Like you said, they can't seem to see you. Several times, while crouching, I stepped out where one should have seen me, but didn't.
Have had no trouble killing all the baddies. Only time I've died, is falling or drowning. Not been killed by AI yet and I'm playing Hard option.
Why are they making games so easy these days??? That's why I quit the Farcry series. In Farcry5, I'd take a bow and wipe out a whole Outpost in a matter of minutes and never be seen. That was on the hardest difficulty.
Anyway, Metro is fun as far as the creatures and sneaking around. Like one commenter said, cutscenes are lazy. No mechanics to program.
And it's sad, 2 series (Metro and Farcry) that I've been a loyal fan of, bought every game in the series and really looked forward to playing, in the newest releases they've let us down. (I didn't get the latest Farcry).
I'll most likely not buy another Metro.

My previous comment, I was only in the second chapter. Now I just finished Summer.
Once you get thru the first part with all the cutscenes, it gets good!
The AI is still weird - shooting me thru thick concrete walls, seeing me while I'm most certainly hidden, looking straight at me and not seeing me - weird!
But the game is fun!!! Alot to do, alot of sneaking around, the story is great, the areas are rather large with alot of places to discover.
Quite a few jump scares, that make it fun.
Metro still has my loyalty. I'll buy the next one, if there is one.

So Metro Exodus is a far better game for me with it's immersive world design, great story, Immersive gunplay, slow pacing that takes its time, character development. One of the best games of 2019 that i have played along with Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Hey mack, I don't expect you'll see this, just in case you do, please know that this is probably my 3rd comment I've ever left on any video I've ever seen. (I've been on CZcams since about 2008)
Your opinion is ALWAYS my go to when it comes to anything you review, you're an absolute inspiration for gamers who want quality and content.
I've been recently donating at plasma centers to save up for a donation to you, I don't care if you stop making videos today forever, you've already left this legacy for me to look up to as a gamer (I have a feeling it's only begun! 😉) and just take my word, you will find my name on the donor list one of these days.
I have nothing to gain by making this comment, but I just want you to know you are the absolute best I've ever seen and no matter where your life takes you, you've always got me to be in your corner, Mack.
    Thank you

Glad you are back Mack. I am at the taiga mission in the forest area. I admit I am a bit of a completionist and I like to take my time: I’m at 49 hours. How in the heck people finish this game in 9 hours I don’t know. You must fly through story missions. Anyhow yes, the E key cutscene is not my favorite either. On the other hand this game lets you jump through structures and if you want to reach some certain areas you need to really get creative on your exploration (for example I’m thinking of a crane on the north side of the Volga mission). None of the climbing is push this button we will do it for you. That was great. AI is not particularly smart. Agreed. Overall I think this is a great FPS. A few story driven FPS are this good nowadays. I can think of Prey maybe. But on immersion and atmosphere, this game was close to Half Life 2. This could have been a 10/10 but it’s probably more like a 8.5/10 for me.
