r/AmITheA**hole I Reported My Mom For Stealing $43,000 From Me

  • r/AmITheA**hole In today's episode, OP discovers that his mother committed identity fraud and secretly took out a massive loan in his name. By the time he found out about it, the loan amount had grown to a massive $43,000! His mother hadn't been making any payments on it, so it just kept accruing interest and fees. Once OP finds out about it, his mom actually expects him to just suck it up and pay off the loan by himself as a favor to her. OP is thinking about reporting his mom to the authorities for effectively stealing from him. Would that make him the butthole?

For the babysitter story. I would tell my husband, “ok, we can hire her back, but you have to go to out daughter, sit her down, and explain to her that you don’t want to jeopardize your friendship so you are going to hire a person who your daughter doesn’t feel safe with. You care more about your friend’s daughters feeling than your own daughters.”

I legit yelled “WHAT?!?” When I heard that the babysitter recorded themselves reading another persons diary! Like what the fuck! Couldn’t be me and my child. I would’ve woken the whole neighborhood yelling and cursing. Do not invade anyone’s privacy. Especially a diary!

I keep everything bottled up and can't write my own personal thoughts in a journal. We had an exercise to do in the 6th grade where for ten or fifteen minutes we had to do journals and I put stuff very private in there that I thought the teacher wouldn't read (I mean, I'm glad she did because she got me help), but it left a lasting impression on me and I couldn't write in a journal.
However, even my best friend at the time wouldn't ever read my personal journal... Much less record herself doing it. So to hear what happened in that story made me angry. I get wanting to read the personal journals of historical figures like Napoleon Bonaparte or Turenne... But they are dead and they wrote more about their battle strategies or did criticism of past battles and generals. I don't even think that the more personal stuff is even published... If they ever really got sentimental at all. However, you don't read somebody's personal stuff otherwise or in special circumstances where that diary is published (for example, first hand accounts of the Holocaust).

Yes, she’s a teenager and honestly looked sorry, but she’s old enough to understand that she has to deal with the consequences of her actions. Do better next time. No child should suffer because of bs like that.

I mean, let's give her the most charitable interpretation of events, just for fun. Let's assume, despite all evidence to the contrary, that she honestly believes that bullying is the proper way to... force people to just become social? Well, then she needs some time for self reflection, the victim needs time to heal, the father needs to realize that the friend-of-a-friend (or family member in this case) is not always friendly. All in all, if there is a second chance to be given, it needs to be *after* his daughter recovers, and not 'right-now-can't-you-see-I-have-an-important-trip-why-won't-anyone-think-of-ME?!'

The story about the babysitter reading the diary really pissed me off. The daughter is still struggling with the death of her best friend and is still in the healing process. This babysitter does not get to choose when the daughter needs to come out of her quiet place. Her safe place. It was extremely disrespectful and could only cause more damage to the daughter. The dad here is the worst because he values his friendship over his daughter and the pain she’s endured.

It's not like I DID any emotional and mental damage by reading it in front of the other kids AND recorded a video on it! I was just *MESSING* with her!" Well she got the "Messing" part right, because she's messed up in the mind!
Aww boo hoo! She got fired for breaking trust with a minor and tormenting her! Meanwhile, Dad of the Year DEFENDS Lauren's tormentor because "I have a 14 year friendship with MY friend that *MORE* important than my OWN daughter's mental and emotional well being and trust!"
I think it's absolutely DISGUSTING that the Father chooses his friend and mentally abusive teen child over his OWN child, especially when she was still grieving!
I think OP should rethink about her marriage with her Husband. If he wants to be the delusional heartless prick who chooses "friends" with a mentally and emotionally tormentor, then he should be cut out of the Daughter's life!

Yea, I was on the fence about the grinch stuff because perhaps a little loving teasing can help in certain situations.
But then the journal cemented the fact that the teasing was definitely not coming from the place where it could be considered caring.
I mean when I read the title I thought "wow that is an invasion of privacy. Imagine catching someone reading your journal after you write things from a very dark place".
But it was not even that.
It was reading it out loud.
      To other people.
      And then videoing it???
I feel like this is a girl who videos herself "teasing" other people a lot because it gets her views on some platform and she likes the attention.

Also the daughter was visibly upset and wasn’t even around the babysitter and kids when OP got home. If the baby sitter really wanted to help she wouldn’t record it to begin with or continue to read it when Lauren left, and I’m sure there was a lot of crying and asking her to stop and give it back which the babysitter just decided to overlook, there’s no room for confusion there. The babysitter was obviously more entertained by all of this than genuinely trying to help and now it’s up to OP to just forgive ??

But I don't think that the birth mom would keep visitation from her partner, although she probably and rightfully so would hold those boundaries to the mil! OMG, the journal story: I'm freakin seventeen, and I've seen enough of the world to know that a journal is a weighty sympathetic ear to listen to you rant and sob and scream about all your pain and insecurities without consequences, and allow you to look back on it and recognize the pattern you could break to feel better again. I had a diary once, where I could write everything I felt, and by the time I was done, all the anguish and pain was gone, and I was relieved I got it out of my system. The journal is a private way to express yourself, and the fact that the daughter uses it is precisely how she isn't breaking down and thinking how the world is against her because it took away her best friend. Just because the babysitter isn't a legal adult doesn't mean that anything she does can have the excuse that she didn't know it was wrong. I was younger than that when I knew the significance of a journal or a diary. Sometimes, when you can't find a way to express it with your voice, you write, you draw (like I do sometimes), you sing, you even dance! The babysitter way overstepped and utterly insensitive to how your daughter was feeling, and the daughter will feel that she has nowhere safe to express herself. I hope the daughter will be alright. The road to recovery is long and hard, even harder now after what the babysitter did, and the daughter will probably feel worse before she gets better. But at least she has OP, and at least we do know that she is somewhat better, because she knew she had someone to depend on and call for help when she's in the dark.
Believe me, I know about bottling up your emotions, and there were times when those resentments and angry feelings that built up just came out, and I ended up verbally lashing out at my family, which is something I'm not proud of.

I started working with children when I was 17 and I 100% knew better then to do what that babysitter did because it is litrally just common sense! Also when the mom fired the baby sitter I was like “THIS IS A GOOD MOM!! Story 1: So the mom will say that she did what she had to do in order to raise her children. Thing is, she didn't *do* anything to earn that $10k-$20k. She used her child's name like an ATM, screwing up their credit for years to come, and is not really making any effort to pay off the debt she accrued in her child's name. With all that outstanding unpaid debt, guaranteed their credit rating is shot. That will preclude the child from some housing, some jobs, government security clearance if they want to serve their country. It can literally destroy their future, for what... a few groceries? Maybe snuck in a spa day somewhere?
Story 2: It'sabuse to expect a child to imprint upon you and give you love and affection without first giving it to the child. Offspring and your descendants do not owe you affection when they had no choice to be born. If you want a child out of your life, you're making that choice for the child. When they go along with it, you don't get to act shocked or offended. You turned that child into a stranger, you made yourself a stranger... and when was the last time a stranger walked up demanding your love and respect and you took them seriously? Yeah.
Story 3: If she were alone, I would have taken her home, but made it clear that we never need to speak again. But since she was with the brother I wouldn't necessarily mind putting them out. I would explain right there to the brother that I'm not required to put up with disrespect because he's in love. Get married, you have my blessing, if you have kids I'll be polite and help them any way I can. But this person is who you want to marry and that means that if she gets herself in trouble, you're in trouble with her and it's no one else's job but yours to protect her and get her out of trouble. So here you go. She got you stranded in the middle of nowhere because she literally could not stop being disrespectful to the memory of someone's dead wife for ten minutes. That's her fault. She has to own that, and so do you now. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your lives together.
Story 4: The 17 year old is old enough to know right and wrong. Plus it's an established patternof being told to leave the 14 year old alone and she didn't. In fact it was the classic teenage gaslighting of she didn't mean it she was just harmless teasing. The 17 year old isn't the one who gets to decide if it's harmless or not. She disrespected the daughter, the house rules ("don't antagonize my children" is a big one in every house, everywhere) and expects to be given unlimited second chances. No. You're not owed a job in anyone's home. If the husband is more worried about the friendship he can go live with the friend and pay the 17 year old as an administrative assistant or something.
Story 5: Grands have to understand this - you children's children are not your children. You don't get to just waltz up and overrule your kids' parenting. Otherwise your grandkids will never listen to their parents. Now that was probably the intent in this situation with the in-laws. But they were so tone deaf about disrespecting the non-birth mother that they must have forgotten (I doubt that this is the first time they have had to learn this lesson) that their daughter will back up her wife. So definitely don't overplay your hand. And definitely there are hills to die on as a grandparent (drug use, abuse, etc.) but your own microaggressions are not one of those things.

In the Babysitter one…your husband has a responsibility to protect his kids. It’s his primary responsibility as the man in the relationship. His first thought should be of the emotional damage this causes to his child. His friend should have done a better job raising their kid. She should have known better. And this lady told her so a few times. That’s NOT ok. The husbands friend is a secondary issue here.

The father was in the right. That story was a textbook example of the emotional response of the mom vs the rational response of the dad. Everyone, from rslash to you, is so hyper-focused on the friend thing that you ignored every other point he made. Sure it was a bad thing to do but by the reaction the girl was genuinely trying to help (The mom said this) and felt really bad. She didn't abuse the kid or do anything life-altering so the mom's response was completely out of line and way too extreme. The dad was right, she apologized, you have to make amends.
You and everyone else is defending the mom but think of the precedent this sets for the girl. Apologies are NEVER accepted. Mistakes can NEVER be forgiven. One strike and you're out. That's absolutely awful. The babysitter messed up but it's not like she did anything malicious or bad. Way too much emotion and way too little rational thinking.

If i get a job as a cook and have no idea what im doing in the kitchen, i wont go around doing stupid shiet, i will either quit or ask for help from my fellow co-workers etc. What im trying to say is you can't take matters into your own hands when you have absolutely no idea how things work, she should have at least asked the mother before she did something like that!
also, if you don't like people reading your texts on your phone out loud (which i assume most of us don't like that), then why do you think its a good idea to read a child's text book about her grief out loud??
the father was probably caring more about how much less money she costed as a babysitter (considering she has 0 experience and she was also a friend) which i find it unacceptable for a father.
children at that age are like glass, one wrong move and they break and they will need years of working on themselves to fix something that YOU find "not bad/malicious".
You can't trust that person around your kid, it's not about forgiveness. She can't deal with children with trauma, there for she should not be around them and that's not a bad thing!
if you can't bake don't go for a job at a bakery, if you cant cook don't go for work on a restaurant. I had to quit way more simpler jobs because i couldn't function properly there. I had to quit a job at a coffee shop because even tho i like making coffee, i'm way too shy and anxious to deal with 400 different people every day AND THAT'S OKAY its not for me!

@@serenanocte4769 There is just so much wrong with your post.
"the father was probably caring more about how much less money she costed as a babysitter (considering she has 0 experience and she was also a friend) which i find it unacceptable for a father."
Literal strawman. You just assume the father's bad because it helps your narrative. At no point did he ever even remotely suggest that was his motivation. So you can just screw off with that. "Hurr durr I find this thing he never did unacceptable!" what is wrong with you?
Also no, children are NOT glass that's a patent lie propagated by weak people of modern society. Children are as durable as you make them. I can 100% guarantee that as a kid if my babysitter read my journals I wouldn't have had life-long trauma. That's pure insanity.
The babysitter did wrong, nobody disputes that. But her actions weren't THAT bad, it's not like she abused the child or something. You and the mother both are prime examples of why emotion MUST be tempered by logic. You're just screeching harpies going on about "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!", the kid would be fine and it would do her good to learn to forgive and forget.
Instead of just diving headfirst into the deep end of emotional hysteria, use this moment to teach the daughter that people can do bad things with good intentions and you need to forgive them for their transgressions and move on.
People like you are why modern generations are the softest, weakest, most mentally-disabled generations to ever grace this earth. Accept an apology when it is genuine and move on with your life.

@War450 You make a lovely point here, and I thank you.
I'm a mom, so I am torn so much over all of the points in the story. I agree with mom being upset over the violation of trust, and I agree with dad that the apologies from the babysitter should be the end of it.
What I am struggling with is where, as a parent, do we cease stopping being that momma/papa bear and let the pain of life happen? When do we intervene?
Disappointment and betrayal are unfortunately large parts of life, but perhaps protecting our kiddos in our homes should be paramount..
Conversely, the daughter's learning how to move forward from broken trust on her own is so important...
I hate this story more than I care to admit, and love it more than I can describe.

@@j.weaver3039 I think the line is subjective and based on the real damage done. In the grand scheme of life your babysitter's misguided attempts to help you wont do anything to you. I mean we, as adults, can look back and think about ourselves in such a situation. Sure we'd be mad but right now, today? It wouldn't effect us in any way.
What WOULD effect us is being taught that mistakes can never be forgiven. And that is far more damaging.
If I was in those parents' shoes I'd make the Babysitter sit down and give a deep, heartfelt apology and explain her motives to the girl and then have my daughter accept that apology.
The mom acted as if the babysitter sold the girl to a dealer or something, what the babysitter did was bad, but forgiveable, so you forgive and move on.

assuming someone did a crime with no proof that's sick but it's his friend's daughter so he might not want to burn any bridges but he should prioritize his child over his friend since that was his main issue in the post.

The father's parents story reminded me of the anti-drug commercials in the 80's, when the dad confronts the kid and asked him "where did you learn to do this?" And the kid says: "from you! I learned from watching you!" You reap what you sow and respect has to be earned; sad that so many refuse to understand that.
