    Does Your Harley Compensator Clunk?
    We were excited to get our hands on this Harley compensator upgrade from Baker. Riders have been dealing with Harley’s poor compensator design for some years now. Even their Screamin Eagle upgrade turned out to be an inadequate solution for most. Some riders actually spent a lot of money to buy a new Harley-Davidson. They had to deal with clunking, loosening Harley compensator, and starting issues. They may have spent more good money for the Screamin Eagle upgrade (as well as labor costs) only to still have the same issues eventually redevelop.
    The Noise
    The noise can be heard in the primary drive when you shut the engine off. The noise occurs when the factory Harley compensator returns to its lowest position. The design flaw is lack of lubrication within the assembly and the clunking or banging that can be heard verifies that excessive wear is occurring at the assembly.

    A Solution
    Baker has now given us an assembly that permanently solves this problem for Harley Davidson motorcycles 2007 and newer. Baker has borrowed from the tried and true pre-2007 cam lobe geometry but has added modifications to the motor shaft extension and developed a Harley compensator sprocket and spring cup that have oil passages in them, allowing for plenty of oil to lubricate the compensator’s cam lobes. The Baker design not only eliminates clunking but also improves function and adds extended durability over the stock, flawed, factory design.
    The assembly is sold as a complete kit. It includes an engine extension shaft, a 34 tooth compensating sprocket, cam slider, spring cup assembly, and a hardened 9/16-12 hardened hex bolt. The only other parts needed are: outer primary gasket, derby cover gasket and (40-45 oz) primary drive oil. Both, Baker and Fix My Hog recommend using Spectro primary drive oil. The instructions are very straightforward. Provided the correct tools are available, we consider this upgrade to be easily achievable for the “weekend mechanic”.

    Fit a solid sprocket and manual adjuster and have no problems at all - starting becomes easy as the starter is not trying to overcome the spring in the compensating sprocket. When that happens with the standard set up, the starter takes all the available power from the battery, the voltage to the ECU drops below a certain point and the ECU stops 'heating' the coil which then discharges to the spark plugs making the engine 'kick back' this then wrecks the starter dog/clutch ring gear and doesn't do the battery any good. All this nonsense about different compensators is just to take more money off you for yet more junk !

      What do you mean solid sprocket? Manual adjuster like old electras glide 2001?

      @@exupakias A 'compensator eliminator' and a manual adjuster that is like the Screaming Eagle one - the sprocket is marketed under the name 'Harddrive' on eBat but I bought my one from V-Twin MFG. The manual adjuster is marketed by V-Twin MFG part number 18-8328. Vulcam Works do a different one and there are others for the later Twin Cams (post 2007) - they are imported ones and it seems like they are marketed by lots of people. Mine are both OK after a lot of hard use on my 113 inch bike but shop around as prices vary.
      Earlier primaries ( '06 and earlier) are different and nothing fits the later ones.

    Do I have to retune my motorcycle if I upgrade the compensator?

    I pulled the primary chain drive (and plastic compensator) out ; and replaced it with a 3 inch (enclosed) belt drive. That was over 10K miles ago, on my 99 twin cam, still works just fine and dandy. Harley will never go with a primary belt drive. They are too robust, and dealers would take a huge hit in "shop income" not fixing primary chain drive problems......

    Do I have to remove the clutch also or will the chain come off the compensator sprocket easy enough?

    yup - add another $600 to fix Harley's bad design. Compensator assembly, cam plate assembly, ABS... and that $600 for Baker's compensator kit... Ifff you do your own wrenching. My 2006 Nightrain will be my last Harley- done.

    My 2010 has inch n half bolt and t77 star bolt which would I loosen to remove compensator?

      Fitment:
      2006-2016 Dyna (except bikes with a 240 series rear tire)
      2007-2016 Softail / Touring (except CVO Softail Breakout models, Softail Rocker models, and any bikes with a 240 series rear tire)
      This compensator sprocket is limited to 130hp.
      Inspect the inside of the outer primary for a plastic oil deflector or casted in oil deflector. The plastic deflector needs to be removed for adequate clearance for the BAKER Compensator Sprocket Kit. If the deflector is casted into the inner primary; this area needs to be ground out using a small air die grinder or equivalent for proper clearance.
      For 2007 to 2010 Big Twin: The customer will need a HD rotor to install the BAKER compensating sprocket. For a 2006 Dyna, the customer will need a HD rotor and stator. For 2011 Big Twin models, if the stock spring cup is welded onto the stock rotor, a new HD rotor will be needed in order to install the BAKER compensating sprocket. HD rotors and stators are available for purchase from BAKER Drivetrain or your local HD dealer.     It's too bad a Harley owner has to modify and repair the bike to become acceptable and reliable. I really don't understand the loyalty to this brand as there are many better options.Can you say Kool aid?😂
