There's so many reasons I love your channel. The next time I'm in the States I'll happily spend hours looking for you missing box of bits just so I can look around your shop with your approval.
The needle wiggle triggered me a bit. A radiused indent in your mushroom of just greater radius than the shaft being measured would reduce it, assuming it would stay aligned and wouldn't spin...
    Love your work.

Ok, so you forgot the color of the box you put the tip in. You brain is looking for a brown box and it probably in the red box. You could solve this by buying a new set but dont open it as soon as you get it you'll find the old ones. Then you can return the new one.

As a machinist myself, what is the purpose of a compensator? It compensates for the pulses of the v twin engine to prevent damage to the transmission. I find that people who lug their engine at low speed in the wrong higher gear, places far more stress on the ramp of the cam of the compensator and increases wear on those ramps as well as the other moving parts. That’s what I saw on my used 15 Ultra with 17k miles on the OD when I bought it. That clatter clatter from the primary even at idle or start up, word out compensator. The compensator was wore out and I replaced it with a HD compensator and have had zero problems. I don’t lug my engine in the wrong gear at slow speed and I ride with higher rpm’s in lower gears. People who have done away with compensators altogether and run a belt drive, don’t experience these problems either.
.030 of run out seems a bit out of spec but I really don’t know what HD requires.

Kevin...what a decent guy and great show. I asked you a question earlier about installing a timing gear set... There is one question I wanted to ask you. In case you talk me out of installing a gear set, and stick with new pads.....are there tensioners available for new pads that put less pressure on the chain? Since the major complaint seems to be that the excessive fast wear on the pads is primarily caused by to heavy pressure by the spring on the tensioner....I gotta think some company came out with a new type that has lighter tension or pressure to the pads. Any info ??? Thanks

I have a 2015 cop bike that had 1800 miles on it when i bought it. it was only used at a yearly rodeo at the dealer. it was mint. but every so often i would get hard starts. I rebuilt the starter thinking that was what it was. Then it came back several hundred miles later. I was going to do cams anyway so went with darkhorse compensator and an evolution stage one clutch. It has been AWESOME for several thousand miles. The only thing is that there is a minor pulsing if you hold throttle at 2800 rpm. barely noticeable and the benefits FAR out weight that little quirk. I've read that many users of the darkhorse comp experience the same thing.

Maybe I'm just being 'Mr Obvious,' But for all the talk about "precision," in the alignment of crank,s shafts, sprockets and other important parts, that would be a high priority at the time of construction, and not after it's come apart and needs to be rebuilt.
Quality, craftmanship and workmanship, seem to all be lost causes with HD. The ultimate bike, is one that can drive down the road and make it from A to B, without needing major surgery after the trip.
If I was a rich man and wanted the ultimate bike, I would buy it new and then let Kevin have it, to reconstruct the bike from scratch, from the bottom up. And build a bike that should be the standard from the manufacturer. A bike done right!

    • @KevinBaxter

Thanks for your confidence and kind words. If you look back a little bit you'll find quite a story and interview about Dr Bob who did exactly the same thing you describe. @@KevinBaxter Not disagreeing with you a bit. But the price of a HD is already up there with luxury cars, or sport cars.
Honestly, I've had Jap bikes, that never gave me a single concern, as far as their construction.
The HD 88 TC I had, made me break out in a cold sweat when I started it.
It's not enjoyable, to ride something you know can fly apart at any time, no matter how you ride it.
It was a really nice looker too. Well made on the outside, solid and heavy.
But the internal workings of the engine and trans, were always a cold sweat.
I'm sure there was a time, when American made machines, were the epitome of quality, dependability, class and what made America great!
Now, we look to Mexico, to build fake American bikes, with fake sticker logos.
      And then... Came the "Livewire!"
Madness! Madness I say! And the beginning of the end!!!

    • @KevinBaxter

I have heard this and in most cases I have found it to be a problem within the transmission. Noises can come from a lot of places and I'm hesitant to pinpoint a Cause without looking at a bike on a Case by case basis.
