Doc , you sir are...THE MAN! I APPRECIATE all of the video's and EXCELLENT tech tips. I'm taking a "ITS FINALLY MY TIME" cross county trip from Pennsylvania to California. in a year or two, but before that I'll be heading to Florida. I'll bring ol Silver by and have you go over him for me ! Keep up the EXCELLENT videos . Happy Holidays to you and yours sir.
That exact Captain America bike behind you is exactly what I would have if I wasn't hauling freight like "Wells Fargo" everywhere my wife and I go on our Ultra. Great videos - keep em comin!
I was working on my M8 117 today and noticed that if your fingers are strong enough, you can remove the retainer w/o tools(just compress the spring). That left me with bit of a sick feeling. If that retainer chose to pop out on the road, the inner aluminum tube would slip out of the head and result in a deluge of oil spilling out of the head. Scares me a little. But apparently that doesn't happen. Or does it? There is no lip/groove on the spring cap to prevent this.. It is just a slippery piece of metal. Perhaps "popping out" never happens but I do wonder why it doesn't.
Thanks for another informative video. I’m thinking of doing the stage two upgrade on my ‘17 FLTRU. The tech tip about the washers I will need is very helpful.
Thank you for sharing, I own 16’ Twin Cam Road King w/ 31K miles. Question Doc, I’m seeing what looks like dried dirty oil on the top outside on one of the pushrod’s ….is that oil leaking from pushrod seal?! I don’t see hardly any videos showing that is a common issue on Twin Cam’s and I’m suspecting not a huge deal if taking care of soon. Do you recommend I upgrade to the adjustable pushrods once the dealership replaces seal? and are they reliable? I have an Extended warranty on bike ,! I’m assuming that seal would be covered under warranty. I’m a Subscriber and thank you for sharing videos with your knowledge.
More things that can go wrong using those adjustable pushrods... like valves hitting valves if one is miss adjusted or comes loose. I'd rather just take the extra time , remove the gas tank , motor mount, oil lines (M8) , sparkplugs , Rocker box covers and rockers off.... also my question is what's the weight difference between adjustable pushrods and solid counterparts as well as would adjustable pushrods accelerate wear on the valve train due to extra weight assuming they are adjusted properly?
My 2001 xlc 1200 has solid pushrod covers. I had a cam and ignition installed when I bought it. So my heads are going to have to come off if I change anything. Unless there's a trick available.
Doc?! Sir, I’ve been looking for a way to stop an oil leak at the top of a pushrod tower cover, without having to disassemble the top end. But here’s the kicker, it’s on a 2005 Buell Xb12s. You have an idea or direction you can point me in? I really don’t want to crack the top end off
It is rare that one push rod tube upper o-ring is leaking. Most of the time I will find the breather seal is worn out and the oil is coming from between the breather and seal. it is worth your time to remove the air cleaner assembly (top and bottom and follow the oil trail....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Thanks for the reply sir! My buddy’s xb12s lightning is leaking and when we rotated the motor to see where exactly the leak was coming from, we cleaned the crank case ventilation valves or egr valves and grommets and noticed that they were not leaking, just sweating in those areas, then we thought it was the maybe the rocker box gaskets but it wasn’t. So we cleaned the entire engine with brake cleaner. Let it dry, and started the motor and looked for any leaking. It’s from the front pushrod tower. Not a heavy leak, just light run from the top of the tower’s o-ring. Don’t wanna crack off the top end for an old o-ring. Wondering if we can get a dollop of rtv or sealant up in there to get it to stop leaking. Thanks for the concern reply. 😊
FranBunnyFFXII It not just M8 engines it’s whenever the pushrods are not adjustable type that they cut them to avoid taking the upper part of the engine apart. So it could be an Evolution engine or Revolution Twin Cam. It’s a shortcut.
I Need something new edition..."HARLEY GREEN COLOR" like WATER MELON JUICE...in SUMMER...🍹🏖...just for ladies edition...😊.. fress and stronger...👍💖... Your edition. CICIHARYATI.
Exactly what was looking for. I want to check for adjustable pushrods on this used bike and now I know how to check and what to look for. Thanks Doc
Stage 2 on Monday, can't Wait too feel the torque

I have actually assisted in this upgrade a few times, and they both used the bolt cutter method since they didn't want to replace all of the seals.

You the man Doc. Thanks for explaining pushrod tubes. Looks easy , but learning from the pro's is best.
Thanks for watching...Doc
If you could, please do a quick vid on the proper way to use a bolt cutters to cut pushrods when doing a cam change.

BaggerBro copy paste like share great advice
Measured for you this morning, weight difference is around 20grams. We haven't noticed any difference in the wear on the valve train.
Thanks Doc.
How can I check to see if my mechanic put them in right? If something is wrong will the covers leak oil?
Yes. The covers would leak. Thanks, ~ Doc
Thanks happy holidays!!!
Learned so much from you, thank you

Always great info. Doc
Great video. I plan to cut my pushrods when I do my "maintenance" for the spring loaded cam chain tensioners on my 2003 Road king.
Thanks Doc, Great video!
PS had no idea that they Still had a few parts that they used from 1936! For todays design! 🤔

OOOO, So that's why people are using bolt cutters for the M8 Engines.

Go with S&S, much better product!
