I was at this show.. it was a religious experience.. core memory.. something to consider.. this was in Central Park.. 120K people for $20 tickets.. first come first serve.. full on sprints across the great lawn when they opened the gates.. 2 years after 9/11.. New Yorkers as far as the eye could see.. when this song ended I sobbed..

DMB has been my favorite band for the last 25 years. You should check out the Dave and Tim Reynolds version of Bartender from Radio City Music Hall. Its beautiful.

Cortez the Killer from this same album is also a flippin JAM!!!

I love listening to someone talk about how good they all are, and how Carter didn't do much... And Carter is actually probably the best at his instrument among the band. Just incredible.

Carter (drummer) comes from a Jazz/ classical background (like stated by the guy in the right… interesting notes about Carter is he is truly ambidextrous, and because of this he plays open handed and very different from almost any other drummer (he plays his snare with his left hand even though his set up is for a right hand snare for a typical drummer). I also second that Carter is in my current and all time top 3 drummers, the guy is just nuts… and Dave wakes up every morning and “thanks Jesus” that Carter is his drummer.
Boyd (fiddle) is also classically trained, and I miss his presence in the band dearly.
LeRoi (woodwinds, a little flute, and other “horn” instruments) comes from a Jazz background as well, and to me was the absolute anchor of this bad (until he passed).
I remember being a little kid in the 90’s and forcing my grandpa to listen to some DMB on the way to the cabin, my gramps was blown away by the Sax (LeRoi) and was calling out LeRoi’s little little licks from classic jazz that he would throw into his live performances (Somewhere over the rainbow and others)…
The band has never been the same to me after losing Boyd (fiddle) and LeRoi (Sax). They were a ridiculous mix up of Folk, country, rock, pop, jazz and other genres… and in there first 4 studio albums you could just pop in the record and hit play and have a 3 hour experience from start to finish.
Playing live they definitely took liberties and had fun playing together and put on an amazing show!

DMB, not really my jam. but I absolutely love this cover. Everyone in the band kills it and I could watch Carter play drums all day.

The national anthem was huge because it wasn't too long after the world trade center incident and its at central Park of all other places

It pains me to say this, but that was decent. They also do a respectable cover of Morphine’s “ Buena”

Must admit, I thought the Dave Matthews Band was a 70s Pub Rock group but then I also thought the same of Boz Scaggs for years. 🙂
One of the greatest songs of all time played by a crack band. What's not to like?

Well they did meet each other (except for the bassist, who was 17) at a bar, Miller’s, where Dave was a bartender, and they did start out playing lots of bar gigs, but it was the early 90’s

Did I get modded for linking to a clean non-commercial site? It happens.
If Dylan can be believed, the song is about the Mojave Desert.
@Jon - the guy in the picture on your wall subsequently became a care worker, you might be scared to learn.
@Andy - I scooted off and listened to Cortez the Killer. IMO they turned it into a song about 9/11.

Mike, I'm so glad you went off and looked up their cover of Cortez the Killer from the same concert, featuring Warren Haynes. I hope you enjoyed it. And yes, given the time of this performance and the location, I am inclined to say you are correct in your observation. Have a great one, sir! - Andy

This concert was staged at a different location within Central Park than the Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon, Diana Ross, etc. concerts (which drew hundreds of thousands of fans to the Great Lawn) - you couldn't fit more than 100K or so where DMB played (this was, I believe, a deliberate decision by the city, probably NYPD). Furthermore, tickets were issued and entry was restricted to ticket holders only (although I'm sure many ticketless fans were able to get in)...other concerts on the Great Lawn were ticketless affairs. At least that's my recollection 20+ years later...

Bit of a curate's egg for me, really didnt like the vocals, the gruff affectation didn't do anything for me, but there were a couple of good solos on sax and particularly on the Hammond. One of my favourite classic rock covers is Frank Zappa's version of Stairway to Heaven on 'The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life', which is far from reverential and all the better for it, bringing in reggae, horns playing Jimmy Page's solo, and various silly sound effects.

Never cared much for Stephans playing.... very lacking in comparison to the other musicians
