I was at this show! You can’t even imagine..
if you want to see what the band can do check out ‘All Along The Watchtower from Central Park.. I was there as well.. it was soul altering.. 120k people, $15 tickets, the middle of New York City.. it’s a core memory.. it’s a bit long but I promise your jaw will be on the floor when it is done.

Dave is the musician I like the most. Complete, humble The Band is something else amazing. For me? The best.

I've seen DMB 7 times and will go and watch them until I die or they quit coming to the Gorge! Truly a different and deep experience each time I've seen them. Watching them on DVD leaves an impression but nothing like experiencing them live. Try it... you will be changed.

I saw them once at The Gorge and it is one of my favorite memories.

We all grieve in our own way ... I too have buried myself in dangerous self loathing ... survivor's guilt driven ... down inconsolable paths. I feel how the need to empathize with my lost friend sometimes might look like I'm taking a journey too far, but it's sometimes the only way I know how to feel the goodbye. I exercise the demon grief and in time return to the living under renewed strength. This what this song felt like to me ...

You hit the nail on the head. He's asking God for a second chance. At the end of the song, he gets his answer and is shown the light.

If you hear what dave Matthews wailing in live performancer with the whole band member, he nullified the bartender yet he is longing for greatest being to save him. What a amazingly contradicting.

Dave is actually singing the word Hallelujah at the begininning and the end of the song

You were right. The bartender is God

With Bartender, I assume it's coming from a place of grief over his father's death - possibly his sister too - as well as drinking too much. The religious element might come from him reflecting on mortality. But he switches "bartender please" with "father please" throughout the song, and those are some pretty strained, emotional highpoints in the song. It always struck me as exorcising feelings of abandonment from his father's death

Oh please I’d love it if you listened to “Braver Newer World” by Jimmie Dale Gilmore. It’s so underrated. Listen to the live performance if you can
