It's also about apartheid in South Africa, where Dave was born and lived through some of his formative years. He's a naturalized US citizen.

this has one of the most creative, yet simple uses of the saxophone I've ever heard. LeRoi stated he was imitating an elephant walking, trunk swaying side to side.

Alanis Morissette is the female voice in this. Song about colonization of the America's from the postmodern perspective so hegemonic in academia across the west over the last 70 years.

Bela Fleck is playing the banjo from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. I think listening to the studio version in this case is good as it gives insight to how they wanted it to sound with guest musicians.

Dave Matthews is one of the musicians I think the most about/ listen to the most. He's an intense dude, cool looking, and puts a lot of energy into his live sets over the years. And it's such a wholesome organic thing for him to get on stage and play bareboned acoustic songs with Tim Reynolds. They've been doing that for years since like the early 90s along with playing DMB sets. Not sure which came first, him playing with only Tim on a stage or with DMB.

This song is written from the point of view of someone who has just conquered another people's land and is talking about the consequences they have to suffer as a result. The message of the song is a warning to the conquered people; don't drink the water because there is "blood in the water", which is a metaphor for the violence used to take their land. The conquered person is telling the conquered that their resistance is futile and encouraging them to move forward to give them space, otherwise they will be "buried". The lyrical message is a reminder of the oppressive forces of colonialism and imperialism and the pain that is inflicted on the colonized or conquered people. The female backing voice is Alanis Morrisette.

Choon! liked it. The ambiguity of rhythm and tempo is striking, and reminded me of Peter Gabriel (notably "Biko", even before your discussion). I prefer the studio version to the Central Park one, which has too much stagy poncing about for my liking. In both cases the last minute (my one objection) struck me as filler.
You could also have mentioned what we did to the Caribs. Like Andy, the only other song I can think of from the genocidal perpetrators' POV is "Cortez the Killer"; unless you include "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho".

@@OvercookedOctopusFeet to be fair, it’s so damn hard to find DMB live content that is high quality AND that won’t get flagged for copyright issues. We had a bear of a time trying to find a way to get the Watchtower video to upload without triggering the YT Copyright Gods. @@theaudiophiles7889 Anything by them live is my recommendation tbh. My favourite band, only this morning got tickets to see them in manchester and london next spring, very much looking forward to it... i like to see reactions to them from people who are not really aware of them as i've been a fan since the early 2000's.. cool to see new fresh perspectives.
